The I am still waiting to be accepted thread!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
reapplicant. many rejects. several yet to hear back from. 1 interview early in the cycle. still waiting. this blows.

oh and with 3 interviews and 2 acceptances, i wouldn't dare post on here. i'd just stfu.

For those with acceptances, congratulations. For those with acceptances and posting on this thread and rubbing it in, are you going to be just as sadistic to your dental patients?

if you don't get accepted by the end of feb, are your chances pretty much gone? i'm asking this b/c if that is the case then i'm gonna study and re-take my DATs again and prepare to re-apply for next year.

I hope that February certainly isn't the cut-off. I'm putting off re-taking the DAT until I'm absolutely sure-- perhaps around end of March? Yes, if you've been accepted, say your goodbyes to this thread-- congratulations, move on. Would appreciate an answer though-- if we don't get any contact for interviews by February-- is all hope lost?

I would say wait until March. Classes are typically full by march although there are a few exceptions and there are a select few that are actually admitted up until June!!

Thanks for the response-- makes me feel a little bit better😳

Hey y'all, I have some encouragement for the group. I was still waiting to be accepted up until yesterday. I got a call from the dean at MCG to tell me that I am no longer on the waiting list and have been accepted into the class of 2011!!! There is still hope you guys!!!

nothing at all...i think we are doomed if we dont hear anything soon, maybe in the next couple of weeks.

Not to be TOO pestamistic(sp?) but has anybody started making alternate plans for the up and comming year? Good luck everyone👍

i still have about 10 schools to hear from. problem is i've only had 2 interviews. i've been waitlisted for 1 and still haven't heard from the 2nd school. so i'm pretty much gonna give up by end of feb. i'm already planning my next year. i'm gonna study and re-take the DATs again. i might take another prep class again but i dunno....it seems like a waste.

this cycle is my second year to apply.
applied 14 schools; 2 rejections; one interview plus acceptance.

I took my first DAT in Oct 2005 and the second one in Sept 2006. I think for those who planned to apply for the next cycle can wait until summer to re-take the DAT.

unfrotunately i'm joining the club. does any one know if the whole aadsas file including the personal essay needs to be redone to reapply next year? or could you just re-submit your personal statement again? good luck to everyone! :luck:

Some schools will tell you what you need to improve. If you've been rejected and it's not obvious why I would certainly get new letters of Rec and maybe write a new personal statement.

You basically have to redo the whole application, including the coursework completed. It's a lot faster the second time though, but still a pain. Just make sure you update your personal statement etc. before hand so it's ready when you fill out the new app. It can be easy to put it off because you figure it will only take you a little bit to make the needed changes.

This is so sad that we have to start thinking about reapplying and do the
whole thing over... 🙁

does anyone feel this way? all the hard work and sacrifices they have made the past several years was to get themselves into dental school....if they don't get accepted this year, that life is unfair?

i know life is unfair....but i have been unlucky my whole life....and i'm just hoping this one time, i'll be lucky enough.

YES! I am trying so hard to not feel sorry for myself, and tell myself that maybe it would be nice to have a year off in between undergrad and Dental school....but dang it, I want to be a dentist!! I do not want to put it off for another year.....😎 Anyways...goodluck to everyone who is still waiting!:luck:

Still waiting too...but I'm starting to decide what to do if they all give me the big NO...I'm definately retaking the DAT's. Other than that, I'm trying to decide between three things. Tell me what you think...

1) Entering a one-year SMP (special master's program)...one which offers courses with current med-students, b/c by the time I reapply next year, one semester of grades wont really impact GPA too much, but it would be more important to use as proof of ability vs med students already enrolled.

2) Getting a one-year (maybe 18 month) M.Ph. degree. I know this won't show ability in graduate level science classes, but many schools look at public health interest as a HUGE positive. Some even require a certificate in PH as you take dental classes. Plus, it's the area of dentistry that I'm interested in so...

3) Volunteering a whole lot (in some clinics, etc.), working to save up some money, and taking just a couple specific classes (not enrolling in an actual program), to fix the one or two blemishes on my undergrad record (i.e. biochem, orgo - both C's in undergrad).

If the main idea is to GET ACCEPTED next year...I'm just not sure which one of these options would put me in the best position.

Stats:
3.1 gpa
3.1 sci gpa
3.7 grad gpa (education)
17/16/19 DAT

Watcha think? 😕

I would work on the DAT as well as fix your science undergrad blemishes-- you're already doing a lot of volunteer work, so just keep those up...

i'm just wondering if anyone knows how many people don't get accepted to dental school? it seems like everyone on this forum has at least gotten an acceptance somewhere.

I think it's more than 11,000...i remember reading a long time ago that some of the Utah schools like BYU, U of Utah, etc...each put out hundreds of predents each year...and I think basically every school is seeing an increase in pre-dental students on the average...hence the crazy competition!!

I could be wrong.....

I don't know about the U of U but there are over 300 applicants from BYU this year. That includes reapplicants from last year but it is still a ton of predents.

There are many undecided pre-dents holding several spots at several schools. They will eventually commit to one school, this will open up spots for others. This happens every year, so don't despair, just be patient and eventually many hopefuls will be pleasantly surprised.

ill join this f*in list too.. its so freakin frustrating just to know that i knwo to wait one ENTIRE year to be enrolled in 2008.. i admit i only scored 17/17/17 but i honeslty dont think that reflects my knowledge and my abilty to be a dentist.. but then again, i guess with 11000 applicants they need some way to filter us out... ive been rejected to like 5 schools, still waiting on umdnj, nyu, howard, bu, tufts.. but i highly doubt with my dats that ill be going anywhere, although my application is pretty strong, the DAT's are really holding me back..

...what sucks most, is the pressure im receiving from my parents.. they dont understand the competition.. 4900 seats, 11000 applicants? asian parents always have that 'my kid is the best' mentality and expects too much sometimes..

honestly, i wouldnt mind holding off for a year.. just do **** that i've always wantewd to do but neever had time, like bartend, learn some other skills and interests.. but well see... still keeping my fingers crossed, and good luck to the rest of you.. its competitive but if you have the drive to be a dentist then you will make it..

Hey..i see you stated you were waitlisted to nyu...thats my top choice for when i apply for 2008. If you dont mind sharing..what were your stats like. Thanks

well...it's about time I joined here too (although I hope we can soon change the original title to "yay...I finally got accepted thread"!)
not getting accepted anywhere this year blows...the thought of going through the application cycle again is even worse
for those of you who will reapply for next year, how are u improving ur chances?

19/19/21 - 6 interviews and no acceptances so far. I think the thing that hurt me the most was not getting my application complete and sent out to schools till late august. I think if I get my application in June 1 next year I should be good. Any thoughts?

Don't get tooo discouraged guys! I finally got accepted yesterday! There are still spots left at schools!

If you got 6 interviews, it doesn't really matter that you turned it in in august. IT must have been something at the interview.

Hi all, I'm in the same boat as most of you, one interview, a few rejections and still didn't hear from a few schools (and i honestly dont expect anything from them this late in the game!). I hate all this waiting :scared: !!
To those who got in after a long wait, didn't it seem all the more gratifying and exciting than if you only waited a week or two? I'm keeping hope alive and I think everyone else should too!! you never know... just my .02

Well said...I second that notion!!!!

that's true. if you get an interview, then the fact that you were late no longer matters. you're on a level playing field with other ppl you interview with. the big difference between the accepted and the rejected is interview performance at that point, and also your file, but not your tardiness in submitting things - not at that point.

I am going to have to disagree with you there. 4 of my 6 interviews have been in the past month and at all the schools i heard something to the effect of "well we have mostly filled up the class but there are still some spots left for you all". Had I been invited in october, I think things would be different right now.

obviously sending your apps in late is a problem. i don't think sending it in august is considered late. i had all my interviews in november. i just haven't gotten lucky to get accepted yet.

my only hope is nyu right now. i call them weekly and they tell me that they can't say how many have been accepted. however, they told me that they are still interviewing, and that their class is not full. i remember calling last year in may (for the 2006 entering class) and they said they weren't as full either. stay alive guys.

damn I Was really hoping to be accepted somewhere at this point but nope. I am still here with you guys. This sucks big time.

I know this isn't what some of you want to hear, but I have heard that many students aren't prepared for Gross Anatomy. When they realize they can't look at a corpse/cadaver they drop leaving open spaces AFTER the start of the year. I hear that is why they put gross anatomy first. It's not that it happens to TONS of people, but I have been told by 1 school that it happens every year to at least 1 person.
