I guess were all just a little more neurotic than the kids going to DCOM and TUCOM-NY. Maybe its the funky curriculum or maybe we're just more thorough consumers of medical education🙂.

Unfortunately, I don't play any sport that involves a ball (problems w/ hand/eye coordination). My preferred work-out method is running outside. However, I'm guessing that would be a suicidal activity in AZ (maybe I could run w/ an IV bag attached...hmmm), so I'll have to find another way to relieve stress. I used to do Karate (it's like weeks of therapy in an hour) and I'm thinking of picking that up again. Punching something for an hour or two a week sounds like a good way to deal with the stress of Med. School, IMO. ATSU-Mesa karate club, anyone?

Can't help you with sports, but I'll sponsor the cooking club. We can rotate weeks and maybe ingest human food a few times a month, socialize. Cuz when I'm up against the wall studying, it gets depressing eating from the freezer, since I'm the household's primary chef!

wowzers. the discussion has taken a drastic turn. furthermore, i think this is the most post in a few days time ever for our school.

my opinions on the past few days:
md/do almost has very valid points and concerns, and i think it's wrong to discount him as not belonging because of his concerns or because he hasn't yet made a decision. he also brought up a great point about using the board to gather information rather than cheerleading--which i feel there is certainly cause for both. i just hope we can all get the information we seek to help us not blindly cheerlead into the next very important year of our lives.

however--and without discounting the concerns of md/do almost and being fully aware that this is not/may not be the case with all of us--i hope we're not basing our decision to attend on the location(s) or because it's the only school we could get into. firstly, that's one really expensive and stressful vacation/relocation. secondly, i don't think any of us were accepted that couldn't get into any other or the majority of schools we applied for. a lot of the faculty and administration that i've talked with over the past few years at com-mesa were very certain that they were selecting a very diverse, exceptional first class.

Furthermore, although the school--and a great majority of all of the osteopathic schools and the osteopathic medical community in general--is focused on primary care, i feel there is certainly an ability for any one of us to specialize if we so decide. it just takes a great deal of focus and energy and convincing residency directors that you're well-rounded and capable enough to take on the specialty. i remember being so concerned with school selection for my undergraduate when i decided to go to college after high school. i applied and got accepted to all the fancy colleges, but decided that it's not always where you get your education, its how you obtain your education. i ended up going to community college and then arizona state and i feel that i got just as good of a well-rounded education as i would have anywhere else by exhausting the resources at my disposal.

i eat seafood, but no land or air dwelling creature.

anybody play any musical instruments?
i play pretty much anything i can get ahold of. i just recently picked up the ukulele, banjo, autoharp, cello and violin(although i have a long way to go to become decent), and concertina. i have released several albums and will certainly finish my last one--for a while, until school's done--before school starts.

i'm terrible at basketball, but i'll play. anybody play ice hockey? there are a few rinks not too far from school.

and as far as specialty goes: not 100% sure, but maybe family practice or become the surgeon general.

6'7", NICE! Can't teach height. I'm 6'3" and am probably what you'd call a swingman, able to play a little bit of the outside and inside game (played center/forward in high school, 2-guard/small forward in college).

I'm all for food, too! Not too many Hawaiians I know of that don't like to eat!
 
I've played a little basketball before, but being 5" 10" I'm not exactly tall. I did play soccer, tennis, and golf in high school. Anyone who's up for some pickup games of soccer I'm in. I like to play bball too but I'm not that great offensively, I can hold my own on defense being an on ball defender though for what it is worth. Being from the south, we have our fair share of bbq's and I tend to eat like the apocalypse is tomorrow so those definitely sound good and I can help out with the grilling.

I like to watch Bball, does that count? I'm lousy at playing it though. My sport is feeding people, and I'm not kidding. My family always said I'd be a doctor or a caterer.
 
dang you guys are hella tall. i'm down for tennis and jam sessions though. i played tennis in highschool, and started to learn golf before i left for college way back. but i'm thinking of bringing my clubs since i hear the courses there are awesome. v-lander, can you bring some beef kalbi? i'll bring my musubi maker. builttorock, i'll bring my instruments down too guitar/ukelele/bongos/bandurria, i'm thinking of buying a cajon soon too.

My husband is one hell of a drummer. He's been in lots of bands and was thinking that it would be fun to start another one in AZ.

For sure bring your golf clubs. Most of the courses out here are really good.. Just be prepared to pay especially in the winter time. I also recently started playing guitar in the past year!

Hey everyone, I've just recently discovered this forum... very cool.. I cannot convey to anyone how excited I am for entering this incoming class. I am assigned to the Seattle CHC.. I can't wait for July!

I am also 6'3" .... but not all that great at basketball.

Baby catcher hunh ..:laugh: Sweet:laugh: and by the way for specialty I am 50/50 between Primary care and Emergency like many of you guys. So I think we all have something in common.

I can definitely see everyone wearing cowboy hats at the orientation👍

For sports, I love playing Basketball and Soccer, especially soccer. I am in a soccer league. we play in Tempe, Chandler and Gilbert.
 
As far as musical instruments, I play the piano, and I sing. I would, however, love to learn other musical instruments.... but of course, we may not have that kind of time come July.

What are everybody's plans for financing your education? All loans, scholarships? Anybody going the military route? I was thinking about the military but I have a friend who's graduating in June that ran into a very disappointing situation that reminded me that when you're with the military during school, it's great. But when the unexpected happens for residency, you're reminded how it can suck to be at the mercy of some entity other than your own will. So, I think I'll probably steer clear of the military scholarships. So what's everyone else's plans?
 
i thought about the military also--navy. however, i am still very not so sure about it.

i am applying for the arizona medical student loan program, as a life-long resident. if i don't get that, i will likely just take out the loans and consider working for the PHS and taking advantage of their loan repayment. lastly, i may just end up getting the loans and then paying them off myself afterwards.
 
I'll be racking up the loan debt as well. A family friend of ours who is an OB/Gyn had several friends go the military route to pay for their medical education and he has told me that they regretted the decision. I guess it is better to be poor and in debt rather with free will than vice versa. After graduation I think I'll look into the PHS or just suck it up and pay them off.
 
hey all!!! i haven't been on here for a while and i had a lot of catching up to do, but i just got back from hawaii as that is where i am assigned and found out so much info i cannot even remember it all, so for all of you who have been assigned hawaii feel free to email me at [email protected]. but i will say that the sight is amazing, the people are even better and the medical director dr. custodio is awesome!!! he is so excited and he really wants us to be a tight group!!! he only wants the best for us and us doing everything he can to get us rotations at hospitals in the area (Oahu) and also has many prospective hospitals on other islands!!!! he metioned that he already has two set-up, one on maui and one on kauai!!!! i believe they were ob/gyn and something else? anyways there is an ER which is amazing!!! and the sight will be completely re-done by the time we get there!!! he said there will be three large classrooms as we will be spending 6 hours a day there our second years and then 2 hours a day in the clinic, so yes we will have plenty of in class time our second year. any more questions email i have a lot more to say but let me tell you that I AM SOOOOOOOOO EXCITED NOW I AM KICKING MYSELF!!! like i wasn't excited before!!!!

as for the bbq i love the idea and i cannot wait to meet all of you!!!! and the SPORTS!!!! as you can tell i am an avid soccer player i played four years college ball 2 years D1 at Uof Arizona and two years D2 at UCSD. i am also a big runner and gym rat. i have competed in one triathlon and am hoping to start training for a marathon soon. i play basketball as i love to watch it but i am not the best and i love sand volleyball!!!!

Howzit soccergrl03 - Dr. Custodio actually emailed me the other day congratulating me and was saying he was giving one of my classmates a tour of the campus. I'm guessing that was you. Great info you gave! I'm excited, too. I'm planning on going back home to HI this summer to visit family and for a graduation and plan on doing some shadowing at WCCHC while I'm there. Can't wait for the comraderie.

Tell me, did you look much into where you might end up living once we're in HI?

I can't believe you were actually at the airport and then turned around and decided not to go to one of your interviews. Yeah, the interview process is starting to wear me down, as well, and I've only been on 3. As of right now, I only have one more to go (Western).

Also...I was going to add myself to the CHC site list, and found out that someone already added me to Visalia, CA! Nice how we're all looking out for each other. 🙂

Oh man i drove around for one entire day i was there scouting out potential places to live. i know for sure we do not want to live waianae!!! not only did i think that simply because of the sheer lack of places to rent, but also because of the employees at the clinic strongly advised against it. unfortunately in waianae they are fighting an endless battle with meth and that creates other problems. additionally there are many homeless persons there (nothing against them) however there was a break in into one of the homes while i was there and the honeowner was murdered. i dont meant o scare anyone its honestly a beautiful place and people in the community and the clinic are working to make waianae a better place, but i just want to inform you, although i am sure you know v-lander since you grew up there, right? anyways i also wanted to say that on Tuesday the cops came to the beach and made all of the homeless pack up and leave🙁 and they are now enforcing strict curfews on the beach, so we shall see what takes shape because of those changes. So after all that I think the best places to live are slightly North of Campus and slightly South. Makaha being North, is pretty nice and has a great big tower which is very quite and has a beautiful ocean view. I also looked into Ewa Beach, Mililani, Makakilo, and Kaelaeloa which were all very nice and about 20 minutes from campus. The good thing about living south is that you wont be in traffic because the traffic is going the other way towards honolulu. however rent is pretty expensive and it looks like either a studio, or a two bedroom place will be best. I found some studios for 800 and two bedrrom anywhere from 1300-1700 and above so it will be pretty pricey. also i know you have a family vlander, they were building brand new homes in maile beach just south of waianae that were beautiful and started at 370,000. Anyways the clinic was amazing!!!!!! and hopefully the rest of this stuff will fall into place, i just cannot wait to go back, i really did not want to leave. in fact one of the doctors there thought i was starting right then and he was about to give me a job, so they are all very enthused as well!!!! Hope this helps V-lander!!

Wow, I wish I knew as much about the Seattle CHC as the Hawaii group does. I wanted to contact them directly, but they don't have an e-mail address on their web page and it would be weird to just call them. I hope it comprable to what's happening in Hawaii.

I don't know about the Teddy, but I passed the exam and got a patch, which seemed like the coolest thing when I was little🙂 .

Yeah, I was really indecisive about whehter I should go up until the last minute. I read some bad reviews about that particular school, so I was less enthusiastic about it, not to mention I had to pay $700 for the ticket. I figured I should go to check it out for myself, but then I decided I wanted my $700 instead.

Part of my problem is that I would have to re-take a semester of Orgo to go to most other schools. It's doable, but at this point I feel that I need to take it easy in the months leading up to the craziness that will be med. school. Also, I feel that I've already bonded with the ATSU-Mesa community, so I'm not really into looking into other places.

The sad thing about Hawaii is, you're going to see meth and meth-related problems just about anywhere. It's really bad. The beach homeless crisis is pretty sad, too. In many ways, "Body, mind, and spirit" is going to touch on a lot of these community issues for us, I feel. "Embedded in the community", right, as Dr. Wood would say?

I'm not really scared of Waianae all that much, though, because my family roots are there and even though I didn't grow up in Waianae, I've been around plenty enough to be familiar and comfortable. Now, is my wife comfortable is the question! The answer to that is probably 'no'. I want to minimize driving as much as possible, though, so we'll see how it plays out. I've seen some decent stuff in Kalaeloa/Kapolei and Makakilo. Mililani's a possibility, although to have a significant drive from school AND a long drive from the ocean is a downer for me. Ewa's fairly affordable although I don't feel like living under the flight path of airliners as they descend on HNL international 🙁 .

It just occurred to me that I'm so glad that come July there'll be a group of us who know where we're going and that we can help each other figure out these things as we prepare for the CHC phase of our education.

I know it will be so nice to have 9 others all going through the same thing that you are!!! I guess as far as some of the places you mentioned to live in go, I did not even realize Ewa Beach was in the flight path, but it is really pretty and one of the most affordable spots in Oahu in terms of buying a house. As for your wife, I know how she feels, I grew up in a very prim and proper town called Tustin in Orange County, but I think she would like Kapolei or Ewa, they are really nice and they seem safer than other areas. Also they have little shopping centers and lots of places to eat!!! I see myself living there. I guess the things that are going to be really tricky will be purchasing or shipping a car and furniture!!! Those things are going to be really tough, but maybe we can all go in on one of those big crates or something, that would be really great!!! As for placing us in Waianae I completely agree with you, it will definitely bring mind, body, spirit medicine to a whole new level. Whats even cooler is that the Community Health center seems to truely believe in this philosophy as well, they have on sight psychologists and nature walks through their private gardens with waterfalls, its amazing!!! they really want their patients to heal inside and out!!! I honestly think we could not have gotten a better site in terms of the kind of treatments they offer at the WCCHC!!!

heh i think you should call the clinic, why not!!!! they would probably really like to hear from you and i think it excites them even more when the students take such initiative. i would definitely give it a shot. also i think that Mesa went to each and every site, i think they hand picked these sites because they had everything they were looking for, so i sincerely dont think you need to worry, i bet your site is just as great!!!
 
I was on the myATSU forum the other day and saw posting for the incoming PA's. I didn't realize that Mesa had a PA program, I thought it was just dental, physical therapy, and audiology. It will be interesting to go to school with other future health care professionals.

Soccergrl03, I'm not sure that all of Ewa Beach is near where planes descend, but I was looking online at places to live and saw Iriquios Point (maybe you've heard of it). I was really interested in it, and then the beach and coastline started to look familiar - I soon realized that everytime I fly into Honolulu, I see that section of Ewa as the plane makes its descent. Pretty from above, but I wouldn't want to be living down below!

Going in on a crate might be a good idea, btw.

I am bringing a bass, guitar and saxaphone down with me. If anyone's up for rock, jazz, classical, punk, funk or alt. country let me know. At PCOM they have a classical group lead by one of the professors. They practice in an auditorium after hours. Maybe we could hook up a similar group at ATSU?

I'm a towering 5'9", so if there is need for a guard let me know.

Has anyone secured housing yet? I have a friend who is starting the PA program this spring and we're looking for housing together. We have been mostly going off of the PDF they sent us. Anyone heard any good or bad things about their list?

I forgot the name of that gym as well, however I thought it was something like Fitness in Motion or something....... Anyways I hate to say this but while I was at the interview I asked about gyms and I think it was Dr. Simon who said that the gym we get to go to for free is not all that great and he prefers LA Fitness, but I seriously hope he is not completely correct or at least the gym is workable. Otherwise I guess I will have to keep paying $30 a month for LA Fitness....... we shall see............
 
I am writing in this forum, slightly 'ahead' of schedule and I guess a bit presumptious since I havent even been accepted yet (Although im comfortably certain I will get in😉 ) I have just been so excited about the innovative new curriculum that I cant seem to get ATSU off of my mind.

So for us 15 or so interviewees yeterday, we were told during the CHC presentation that only 5 sites are not filled: Brooklyn, Ohio, S. Carolina, Alabama and Hawaii. The other sites are filled. THe question was asked about whether or not these filled sites were all filled with paid acceptances, and if they are not would it be possible to switch sites if a seat became available. It seems, according to Joyce and Dr. Cloud that they are not leaving this possibility of switching open--but who knows.

If accepted I have to say the difficulty of the decision between Touro NY and ATSU will be torturous--I went to the interview clear in my mind that I would have to be floored by ATSU to even consider giving up my TOuro NY seat. Well I was floored. Everything I was looking for in a curriculum and working in community medicine--this school could literally have been molded after both my personal statement and secondary essays, its unbelievably exciting.

Well my number one choice for CHC is Brooklyn, so I was glad it was still available. And if accepted with this CHC, my future certainly will include the Big Apple in it--eiter this school year or the next, after a very HOT year in Phoenix. SO congrats to all of you, I would defiintely be excited to be a part of a select group of passionate, and compassionate fellow advocates for the underserved. I will pipe in again if I get the call from Joyce. Oh she warned us BTW that the calls would not be made today because one of the important people in the decision is out of town until monday. So next week.....cheers

floored? interesting...haha. i guess the northwest has some catching up to do in the urban dictionary department. i had that same feeling after interviewing too. its like somebody asked me what i wanted in a school, and brought it to fruition. to think i almost didn't apply here because i have never heard of mesa or atsu before. but after reading their website, talking to them, looking over the secondary, and checkin sdn, i could really feel and knew that they were being genuine and not just saying it to say it. put that with a dope and nontraditional presentation/interview day with wood/cloud and they made it really clear what they wanted to accomplish, which is what i wanted to be part of. counting the days till classes start.

good luck in your acceptance/expensive decision process eastwest.

Haha, that would probably be Dr. Wood and Dr. Cloud, maybe some others. They're here in Kirksville for the annual 'Rotator Cuff Basketball Tournament. They were supporting a team from the dental school. We actually played them in the first round and lost a close one in overtime. I said 'Hi' to Dr. Wood in the hallway and was so stoked that he recognized me and congratulated me on my acceptance to COM-Mesa. Dr. Glick, one of the two that interviewed me was one of the coaches (he remembered me, too). So, yeah, they're out of town for a couple of days.

Hey guys,
For those of you who have been accepted, have you started thinking about Health insurance? Since I will lose my Banner coverage once I stop working at the hospital, I was wondering if any of you knows somewhere I could get a relatively cheap coverage. I do not know if ATSU has a list of providers that they prefer.
 
Yes, please, if anyone knows about health inusrance, post. I'm also going to be losing my coverage when I finish working. I wish they just had group coverage through Mesa. I understand so little about insurance, that it's going to be hard for me to pick one out. (hopefully by the time I'm done w/ med. school, I'll know all the gory details.)

Funny thing is, when I was reading this thread, there was a banner ad for ehealthinsurance.com which provides quotes from different providers, based on your age and where you will be attending school. I don't qualify for "Student Health Insurance" as I am over 29, but individual health plans seem to be pretty affordable, with different options for HMO/PPO, deductibles, and %Co-insurance. You should check it out!

I just got a copy of it myself, and I must say that it has me ready to ask some questions! First of all, and I know this has been covered to some extent, but the second-year modules look like they'll keep us busy. As such, does anyone know how much time we'll be spending in Mesa during the second year? From my orientation/interview day, I thought we'd be spending only a limited time in Mesa in Year 2. Am I incorrect about this?

If we aren't going to be spending much time in Mesa in Year 2, where will our instruction be coming from? I'm assuming they're not going to be entirely taught by clinical staff at our CHC's, which makes me wonder how the instruction is going to be set up, and what "faculty" members will be available at our CHC sites if we're going to be away from Mesa.

If anybody has any insight on this, I would appreciate it!
