Has anyone ever heard of the intern whipple?

The prelim where I'm doing my surgery clerkship was joking about it the other day, saying it consists of a port-o-cath placement, j-tube placement, and a couple other things.

What other procedures do interns get to do which may be considered part of the intern whipple? And when I say get to do, I don't mean just running a couple sutures and bovie'ing.

Ha- mine would be circumcisions!! I did a ton while on peds; my handywork will be all over the downtown scene here in about 20 years!

Tracheostomies would be my #2, followed by umbilical hernias, inguinal hernias, open appys, and the real signature procedure, rigid proctoscopy!

Tracheotomies. Tracheotomies. Unless you mature a stoma, it's not a tracheostomy.

Tool. Tool. Unless you are an anal tool, 99.9% of the medical world knows what is meant when someone says they are doing a tracheostomy and could care less if they mature the stoma or not.

Oh, yeah! Intern year is ALL about the butt. I did the full butt surgery fellowship: butt pus, 'roids, fistulotomy, a$$ warts, sphincterotomy, and more EUAs than I care to remember. We even have a "patented" butt taping procedure at my institution, named after one of the old-school attendings (really spreads the cheeks for good exposure ).

Tracheostomy is an operative procedure that creates a surgical airway in the cervical trachea. The traditional semantic difference between "-ostomy" and "-otomy" is blurred in this instance because the hole is variably permanent. If a cannula is in place, an unsutured opening heals into a patent stoma within a week. If decannulation is performed (ie, the tracheostomy cannula is removed), the hole closes in a similar amount of time. The cut edges of the tracheal opening can be sutured to the skin with a few absorbable sutures to facilitate cannulation and, if necessary, recannulation; alternatively, a permanent stoma can be created with circumferential sutures. The term tracheostomy is used, by convention, for all these procedures. It is considered synonymous with tracheotomy.

I forgot; these forums usually have nothing to do with semantics, debates, disagreements, or people trying to convince others of what is correct and what is not correct.
