The Late Night Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I want pancakes. I think that's what I'll make for dinner later.
you could do internal med and be a hospitalist or somethin...

i had tomato caprese for dinner. and i discovered that king supers carries gaur gum. but sadly thier selection of balsamic vinaigrette is total lacking.

Hooray for multi-quote!

I'm craving a Godiva Cheesecake!

I went to Cheesecake Factory this past week and was going to order it, but I got the one that is half brownie/half cheesecake (forgot the name). It was freaking delicious.

...My lack of touchy feelyness and poor ability to fake it probably wouldn't go over well in many specialties.

 A poor ability to fake it is a good thing! At least you'll be true to yourself. 🙄

Woot. Pancakes FTW. I want some chocolate chip ones now.

Now I'm craving some In n Out

I want some too! *drools*

As you can tell, I'm hungry. 🙁

I haven't been sick in a while, I think working in a hospital has either boosted my immune system or I'm actually always sick and I've just gotten use to it and forgot what being healthy feels like!

Well, that's kind of nice!

Hopefully, I won't have to worry about anymore strep. According to my physician, after having strep three times in one year, you should have your tonsils removed.

Has anyone had their tonsils removed? Is it painful? If I recall correctly, getting your tonsils removed is the procedure in which ice cream follows (source: tv)? 😛

yeah, I manage it by skipping class. I try to fix my sleep schedule but it always reverts to either: sleep 4-5 hours in the middle of the day or sleep 8 hours every other day.

Wow, I thought my sleep was messed up. I have a Delayed Sleep Phase Circadian Rhythm Disorder. I am not tired until really late (4-5 AM for awhile!) but I have to get up for work and often only get 4-5 hours of sleep. I am tired all day but then evening comes and I feel alert again! It's a problem now and I am trying to fix it before I start school in July 2011 and it becomes an even bigger problem. 🙁 Saw a sleep medicine doc and am using melatonin to try to reset my clock. I am doing better. I am actually tired by around 2 AM these days.

I have always been a night owl. Not very hard for me to stay up all night but boy getting up early is a big stress. Should come in handy for some rotations and residency, I suppose.

Anyway, what about a nightshift hospitalist? If my Circadian Rhythm keeps this up I may aim for that.

Yeah I had mine out when I was 14. It was pretty crappy. But yes....ice cream follows😉 You really can't swallow much else.

That also sounds like something that some people think is adrenal fatigue.....so sorry to hear that🙁 Hope it gets better.

Nightshift is awesome. I prefer to be a night owl....most of my clinical volunteering has been on 12 hour night shifts for that exact reason.

When I was 7 years old I had my adenoids removed. They left my tonsils in. I was under general anesthesia so that part was nothing. I don't recall any huge amount of pain or discomfort but it was a long time ago. They still put people totally out for a tonsillectomy, don't they? Are you worried more about post-op pain?

Oh, wow...that sounds SO good.

I think I'm going to go get a bowl of fruity pebbles. Or a bear claw. Decisions, decisions....

BEAR CLAW!

I've never had Fruity Pebbles before, so I am recommending the other (tasty) alternative.

After I've had c-chip pancakes for the first time, I can't eat my pancakes any other way. If I am craving some pancakes and can't buy c-chips (i.e. too late), then I'll settle for plain ones.

If you have fruity pebbles....I suggest taking half fruity pebbles and half rice crispies and making rice crispy treats out of them.

The.
Bomb.

Sorry, I meant post-op pain, not during the surgery. I'm sure I'll be under some sort of anesthesia. Recovery time is my biggest concern. Granted, I just found out today and have yet to look up the procedure or have my consultation with an ENT. I'm sure after a bit of research all of my questions will be answered.

This makes me quite happy 😀 The ice cream part, I mean...

Also smoothies, Popsicles, frozen yogurt, sorbet.......good stuff🙂

Hmmm...Maybe I should just have both 😛 To be safe.

Ohhh! This sounds dee-lish!

Ohhh! "Smoothie" is my favorite food category 😉

Also, rice crispie treats with half rice crispies and half coco crispies. Do they still make those?

pretty sure ice cream is contraindicated after a tonsilectomy due to its milk based properties and its ability to coat the throat. Popsicles are good to go though. i could also be wrong. idk.

i've been craving muddy buddies for 4 days. luckily for me, tomorrow is pink lemonade day at the cupcake place. 🙂

I definitely think I will try this. With the fruity pebbles. That sounds delicious. 🙂

@Hoody: I am ignoring your comment about ice cream. Jerk.

I love the internet. I forgot about the whole sleeping thing. It truly was the worst enemy.

Mine got infected, so I had a really bad time. Plus I'm lactose intolerant so I can't really speak to the dairy thing. But hey, sorbet and smoothies are just as awesome🙂

...sorry. i could still be wrong, i haven't studied peds in forever which is what that procedure is usually associated with. i heard its harder on adults (or was that appendicitis?) but the whole procedure is no big deal. i have an odd bleeding disorder and i still was able to have mine out and go home the same day. had the adnoidectomy thingy as well. better out than in! 👍

Oh that's no good. That sounds pretty terrible, actually. 🙁 I'm sorry it was such a crummy experience for you.

Thank you for the tips though 🙂

I think now they give prophylactic antibiotics so you should be fine🙂

Also, if you want some AWESOME sorbet:
http://www.talentigelato.com/

That stuff is RIDICULOUS. The blood orange and strawberry are the best.

I've never actually had "gelato". It's like sorbet, right? (Which is like rainbow sherbet ice cream, right? Haha) I'm obviously not an expert...

I've only just expanded my taste buds in the last couple years. I hadn't tried Thai, Indian, Teriyaki, lasagna, sushi, and a few others until recently. I guess I should add gelato to the list.

Also, from what I'm seeing, the pain of a tonsillectomy is the same for adults as it is for children. In fact, it's safer for adults than children.

Gelato is more like ice cream though I think maybe it has eggs in it? Not sure what makes it special other than it is italian🙂 It tastes much richer than ice cream; less air in it I think, and much better flavors.

That company is a gelato company but they also make sorbet, or as they call it, sorbetto 🙂 Its SOOOOOO good.

And the containers are super cute. I re-use them as doggie treat containers and bath salt containers when I'm done with them. Just don't put them in the dishwasher! They will melt.

I think it is just the recovery time that may differ between adults and children but also I think that maybe adults just remember the pain more than kids do🙂 Also, everyone heals differently; if you heal well you should be fine. I'm not a stellar healer. I always wanted to be like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and heal super fast.

Ohh. I want to try it 🙂

I'll definitely ask the doctor about recovery time when I go in for a consultation.

In the mean time...Pumpkin Spice tea is yummy. 😀

It's 12:35am, tryin to clean room but instead browsin SDN..

I need to start bring more snacks with me to work, cuz everytime I come to this thread its about food and it makes me hungry

I stayed up this late watching the pups as they romped around until they got sleepy. The pics are of them crying to get out of their pen and chew on stuff/attack our faces, and then of the girl barking in her sleep 😛
cute dogs!
I believe this is the definition of karma. 🙁
whoa, that sucks.

I know what you mean with some of that. Sometimes we have required stuff at a time when I should be sleeping, I usually feel and look terrible at that stuff.

Anyway, what about a nightshift hospitalist? If my Circadian Rhythm keeps this up I may aim for that.

Hospitalist is a pretty good gig. I shadowed inpatient IM for half a day and it kind of rubbed me the wrong way, but I'm trying to reserve judgment until rotations.

right now my short list of specialities is: anesthesia, rads, critical care, pathology and Emergency med. preference being roughly in that order.

a patient's family brought three boxes of donuts for the whole ER!!! I went outta town on those badboys!!!

What I learned at work tonight: Swallowing two bags of Meth to hide them from the police will actually kill you!

Tomorrow will be the last time I have to wake up at 5am for work in the foreseeable future.

Thank god.

Went there, twas closed for saturday lunch

had a fantastic lunch somewhere else though

Where'd you go? I may be visiting sometime in the near future, and always love to check out new food destinations.

And Yoda,

I feel your pain. Had to work last night and will be out and about until about 7 tonight, talk about poopy...

on my 9th continous days of 12 hr shift at the hospital, they called me 6 hrs before my work and told me I'm oncall (and most likely won't be needed) and don't have to come in to work, so I figured since I'm not going to work tonight I can cut my 5 hrs sleep to 2 and run some errands and sleep tonight. and THEN HEAD TO ALL YOU CAN EAT SUSHI!!! then they call me as we're getting seated at the sushi bar and tell me there was a mistake and I need TO GO TO WORK!!!! so to conclude, I'm now sleep deprived as hell, hungry as balls, and pissed as hell!! Its gonna be a great week, I can feel it! haha

When my friend and I had left the restaurant and walked to our car, we both realized we had never checked out the place's name 🙄 , just seen the menu and thought it looked great

I spent about an hour pinpointing my location yesterday.

I parked here: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&hq=...d=IFJlnEggkS3NIiaAJhiJjg&cbp=12,111.58,,0,7.7

Chesnut a little past 2nd

I think the restaurant was on 2nd right at that intersection essentially, here:
http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&hq=...8&ll=39.948483,-75.144054&spn=0,0.002411&z=19

I ate lamb chop lollipops in an incredibly delicious/unique sauce, with a side of spinach, carrots, and mashed potatos
She ate a ravioli based pasta in white sauce with sirloin
Prices for all entrees were ~$15, which was great. All the entrees looked delicious. Cool cocktail list. Place had a nice antique atmosphere that she enjoyed

I'll post tomorrow if the name of the restaurant goes on my credit card statement, otherwise this unsolved mystery will torment me until either me or you solves it

I challenge any SDN philadelphians to help if you know the place, or happen to be wandering about in the area sometime 😛

father brings a kid to ER cuz he had 20 shots of vodka (he's 16) and hit his head onto concrete! but he's refusing to let the ER doc take a CT!!! WTF, why did you even bring him, aldfj;aldjlkd

Anyone up tonight? I had to buy a new car this weekend. My ten year old car disintegrated on Thursday and blew its head gasket. 🙁 I was really hoping to get another year out of it. It was going to cost $2,000 to fix and did not seem worth it on a 10 year old car. I work, I need transportation, so I had to scramble over the weekend and get a car fast. I ended up buying a new car. I love the new car smell even though it is the outgassing of toxic VOCs. 😀
