The Late Night Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
haha yeah, i've seen that. i hope i'm never that guy though.

Darn. I have failed to entertain you. I feel like I am talking like the characters now.

I love that video. I also like the radiology vs emergency one.

Lol. Hilarious.

"You need to get your ass back to medical school....this is ******ed".

It's already made the rounds once or thrice, but I still enjoy this one.

If I asked you to divorce your husband and meet me at 5 am to examine someone's colostomy output, would you be excited? Would you? Two words: rectal abscess.

No. No. Not the god d*mn fracture. The part about asystole.

I love orthopods, I just think they generally have so much fun with everything. They totally admit that they know nothing about real medicine though haha. "CHF? wtf? where's medicine when you need them?" lol

Lol. My friend just matched ortho but over the years I've watched her go from unconventional to completely stereotypical orthopod. It's hilarious. Such a jock now.

Lol, orthopods are a complete stereotype, not that they don't do interesting stuff though. I wonder if gen. surgeons have a specific stereotype?? If so, I've never heard one.

yeah, I just think in general everyone likes ortho people, it's kind of nice.

gen surg stereotype = abrasive personalities who do endless amounts of hard work for little respect/renumeration.

Hey, Late Nighters!

Anyone else lame enough to be sitting at home on a Saturday night? :lame:

You're having wayy too good a time Wolfy. I partied more in High school than I did in college 🙁.

I'm at my friends place "watching" Entourage, which I don't like very much. But ya, still lame for the most part.

Well I was at a fun party but it was "too loud" so the police came and broke it up and sent everybody home. Kinda anti-climatic.

Considering that the Match took place last week, this video seems appropriate:

Hitler finds out his Match results and it's absolutely hilarious!! My favorite part is when he says "Everyone who is going into primary care, leave the room now." 🤣

Gen Surgeons DO endless amounts of work. The abrasive part is surgeon dependent, some are a-holes, most aren't. The ED folk respect them 😉 It's much like Derm, I have no idea why they chose their specialty, but I'm glad they're out there.

Ugh... I cannot sleep at all. I'm wired awake and I really need to sleep! I have a test tomorrow!

Haha, at least its for an easy class, I just know I'll end up taking like a 4 hour nap tomorrow afternoon 😱

Hey all! My first post in the late night thread! WoooO!! It's 1am here in West Africa and I can't sleep because it's about 100 degrees in my house. I'm thinking of sleeping outside even though it's against the Peace Corps rules. I'm debating whether or not I should try to go on a run in the morning before work, or use that time to sleep in and enjoy the early morning cool air. This is probably one of the earliest bumps of this thread for you all haha. /randomness

Hi, kansaskid, and welcome to Late Night! That is very cool you are in the Peace Corps. Thought about doing that when I was in my early twenties. Sorry it is so hot there at night.

I figure since I am a regular to this joint, I have to make at least a token post to the Late Night Thread. How is everybody?

And welcome aboard Kansaskid!

What up ClifF. Say would you happen to know what field the majority of DO students enter? Wonderin if DO is a good option for someone interested in surgery.

The Peace Corps sounds a lot cooler than it actually is, but c'est la vie, quoi.

And welcome aboard Kansaskid!

Thanks for the warm welcomings! I know it's not late night here anymore (9:00am at the office, yay) but it's 3am somewhere! Hope you all got to bed and are having woooonnnderful dreams 🙂

Hey late nighters.

I am craving a hot dog.

I've been craving In and Out all week! I feel like I'm finally seeing some results in my work outs so if I actually had some I'd feel like a disgusting human being.......but all I can think of is a double double animal style 🙁

blah blah blah

+1

How much general math is involved in orgo?

General chem has the basic mole concept/stoichiometry which also derives from that.

Do you still use that throughout orgo/biochem etc?

Barely any.

Yeah, you'll use a bit. For me it was all in the labs, the exams for the main class were mostly knowing mechanisms.

damn, yea i mean I'm in gen chem and my tests are nothing but problems
labs are a joke tho

So what makes orgo so tough? Just memorizing mechanisms and how they work?

There is quite a bit of memorizing, which is part of what makes orgo 1 hard. orgo 2 (and to some degree 1) I think where most people struggle is the actual application (ie problem solving). For example they'll give you materials and say "make this" and you'll have to know what reactions/reagents to use and in what order.

i duno what this thread about, but i'm taking every opportunity i to increase my post count so yeah, check out what im jamming to

Absolutely none. This is why I usually enjoy orgo much more than gen chem, and did very well last and (so far) this semester. This chapter is just really painful with a lot of rearrangements, which are harder than synthesis to predict.

It's no secrete that I hate math. Issac Newton is a horrible person and I regret his life choices. As far as creating a compound/solving synthesis in orgo, I'd say it beats the hell out of solving an tough partial pressure/acid-base problem. Just personal preference though 🙂. As long as you memorize reagents and conditions that affect them, you can get to the prd in a syn problem. It might take 7 rxns more than is necessary, but with creativity and perseverance you can get there.

This is what I'm listening to tonight.

I used to love City High way back. I'm pretty sure had all the lyrics to this song down at one point.
