Hey guys, I was just wondering.. what's the legal deal with shadowing these days? I keep hearing new regulations and such forbidding it. Is that true?

With all the new patient privacy laws, shadowing IS basically illegal. One of the doctors I shadowed though lied and said I was a med student so I could go watch a surgery 🙂 Most of the doctors I shadowed "overlooked" it and let me tag along anyways. Some of them asked the patients, do you mind if so and so is in the room...

Okay, because I just received the LLU secondary (due the 17th!!!), and it's asking about my knowledge and experiences with Loma Linda. So I'm wondering what I can write before I land myself in hot water.

i think if the patient ok's it, than it's allowed. as long as they know you're there, and the patient is cool, i think it's alright, granted, you're not doing anything except watching.

last night i was shadowing and the doctor made sure that the patient was okay with it first

Where I shadow, I have to provide a form, from the hospital, for the patients to sign acknowledging my presence. They, mostly, don't care because they are signing a bunch of forms anyways at the time.

I'm usually just introduced as a "student" or not at all which can prove awkward if they start asking me medical questions I'm not qualified to answer, and it makes it awkward sometimes. Even the nurses ask me to verify what they're doing sometimes.

Like when I was draining someone's head-shunt, they were asking about school, how much sleep I got.. etc etc, I just answered them very very vaguely and with a joke.. lol.
