your devoted!

I am curious, from the sound of all the posts it seems like all the guys are ok with the dresscode and all the gals seem nervous. Any guys nervous? Any girls not nervous?

I am going to be lazy tonight and skip the gym!

What if I'm a skinny guy, should I gain weight? For some reason I have very high metabolism and have always had a hard time gaining weight. I can see my ribs, maybe I should just enjoy eating all that chocolate without worry of weight gain 😕

I'm not nervous. I'm still 20 lbs heavier than I should be, but that's life. I lost all shame when I had kids. You can all see my rolls, and my stretched out tattoo!

I used to be that way! Hit 30 and things changed.

I have a similar problem. It is hard for me to not be buff and sexy.

The worst is when you are bloated and have to stand in front of everyone in a s-bra and shorts. I dreaded those days but knew it was all part of the job.

Or you get some over handy guy or some girl that doesn't want to be touched by a guy and so she becomes the drama queen. Get over yourselves.

Here's the low down on TCOM's OMM department. Dress code is shorts and a sports bra for ladies. Shorts for boys. They will get on your case hard (mark you absent) for wearing denim. Aside from that, you will occasionally have to take your shirt off, but for the most part a loose/thin teeshirt generally works fine. There is nothing to make you loose physical attraction for your classmates than OMM class =)...

Butts and Boobs-- Your first day is palpating each other's butts for a ligament. This is especially uncomfortable since on day two of medical school (Tuesdays are OMM) with a partner whose name you just learned is about to dig into your butt to find a ligament and report on the quality of its motion.

This is the least of the humiliations yet to come your way at the hands of the OMM dept at TCOM.

Boobs are generally safe until you get to second semester with ribs and anterior chest wall. "Ma'am, please put your hand on your boobs while i put my hand over it and monitor your respiration"

The crotch is the next sacred place to go; as you will be instructing your male patients to 'adjust' his anatomy out of the way of the pubic symphysis. (And for god's sake work your way down and not up! My partner for this section got a handful by mistake... he was mortified...)

Ladies you will have male partners and vice versa (the only exception is if you are a female follower of Islam and are religiously prohibited from allowing a male to touch you). There are some with extra adipose tissue to work with.

There is one professor in particular who is true and total bully. You'll know who it is.

Fair warning: This will likely be your least favorite class during your first two years, but if you memorize the most ******ed detail in the powerpoint, you should be able to pass.

So I'm going to start going start back to the gym tommorrow after maybe going once in the last 6 months. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make it less boring? Running on the treadmill I feel like a hamster in one of those little wheels...working way to hard to not get anywhere.

What is everyone else doing to get in shape?

I've had really good results with '5 factor fitness' by Harley Pasternak (I recommend). But I got really sick in February so I had to go off of it. Well, I thought about OMM lab as I gorged today...and to say the least...I wasn't feeling great about myself...haha. 😳

The thing is, if you look at it like that, you wont go. You cant make it seem like a chore, or you are never going to enjoy going to the gym. Start small and work your way back into working out, otherwise you are gonna be a sore mo-fo your second day of working out.

Personally I have never had that problem, because I always love the feeling after a good hard workout. Whether running or a nice weight lifting workout, I love to feel just worn out. Then stretching for 15-20 mins and I start feeling much better. Plus working out boosts your endorphins, and that always makes you feel better than when you started.

So in short.... Just go do it. Its got to be a commitment. Its much easier to not go, and sit on the couch, but you will never get in shape that way.

i have lost 10 pounds in three weeks! hopefully if i sell my cafe in the next couple of weeks, ill be able to go to the gym every day!

Nice work.
I feel beastly lately. haha

its all about the egg diet...

I've recently discovered the best workout for me is Wii Tennis. Yeah baby!! 😀

Has anyone started anything? Like a workout, or "diet"? How has it been coming along?

I will post my results thus far tomorrow once I get the official word.

I hope you are all well..

I'm going to start working out after I graduate and actually have free time! I have definitely put on some weight this year, but as long as I start running a few times a week, it should come off by the time OMM starts! Plus I'm lifeguarding this summer, so that will be incentive to get in shape!

Congrats ellinopedo, that's awesome! 👍

I am in the worst shape I've been in in a while. I'm still sexy, but I need to trim up a bit. Lifting and spinning today. Going for a ride tomorrow.

i believe at pcom, ladies have to take their shirts off as well. The good thing is, if you're not comfortable with your body, OMM will take that fear away

PCOM here I come! hahaha XD

I've heard some funny stories about trying to find the pubic symphysis on your partner haha...

My son works up a sweat playing really any game on the Wii! Even bowling, he says that you have to jump to get the pins to fall!

I can't wait to get the Wii Fit!

I'm going to do some light lifting in about 10 minutes, followed by a spin-run brick (45-minute spin class followed by about a 3-mile run)

Pushing mad weight is for sissies who can't run.

Actually, I get the best of both worlds. I'm a little more than 6'4" and 230#, and I have pretty strong legs from dragging my big *** around the Texas Hill Country on my bike. I can't power clean like I could when I was working with UT basketball and doing all this explosive stuff, but my legs are bigger now than they were when I was doing lots of heavy squats and not much cardio.

bro, i was joking. also, please.....running is super cute if you can't put up enough weight. im sure you can, but its funny when my little bro, who runs XC, rags on people b/c he can run 15 miles straight and they can't. hahahaha. my standard response is "running is for sissies that can't put up weight."

What schools have everyone take off their shirts? That's entirely hilarious! 😛 Haha doesn't that make Osteopathic med school way sexier? I mean just in the literal sense of the word, even! Haha amazing.

I would imagine that just about every school makes you take off your shirt for OMM lab. You have to be able to feel fascia sticking to stuff, and whatnot.

To cameljockey: I have no natural talent for endurance sports. I played basketball my whole life (post), and I am a natural strength/power athlete. Hell, I could dunk in 8th grade.

That stuff is fun and all, but nothing requires the discipline and toughness that endurance sports do. They are so hard, particularly for me. Unless you're out there with a chance to win your age group, or you're a pro, you're just competing against yourself. Its just about how tough you are and how hard you can push yourself. There is no precision involved, like with ball sports. Pure toughness, and nothing else. It is awesome.

I think soccer comes close to combining precision and endurance. Not necessarily toughness though. It is quite annoying to see them take all those dives.

Recently had my co-worker take my body fat % and I clocked in at 13%. 4% more than my soccer playing days. Time to step up the running and functional training.

You maybe take your shirt off twice at AZCOM. Maybe.

Most people will become solid enough at diagnosis within a short time frame after starting. By the end of your first year, most people can diagnose thoracic, rib, and lumbar issues through a sweater.

Did you just woot? All I gotta say is wow...and you can take your clothes off as much as you would like, its really your choice. Some people continue to do it. Its no fun showing others up though ya know?

Hiya kids!

New here round this thread 🙂

I'm a little flipped out about the concept of de-shirting.

So far I've lost 10pounds thanks to rollerblading, watching carbs, Dance dance Revolution (yup...little bit of a geek over here) and walkin on teh treadmill.

I've got about 20 more to go >.<

Encouragement FTW.

lol
not to worry, i have no intention of showing anyone up.
i'm no exibitionist.....but i'm not worried about having to be in minimal clothing either. this is a learning environment. and i love learning lol

and yes, for the record, i did indeed woot........and i'll do it again!
WOOT WOOT!!!!!!!

YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!!!!!!

I go to the gym 6 days a week... religiously. I'm not so worried about getting in shape for med school (Even though I could look a lot better!), but about keeping this ethic once classes start. I'm not sure where I will work out in Harrogate!

On a side note, however, I am loving running in this warmer weather! I will need a running buddy this fall though!

Your thinking of this backwards, the goal isn't to lose weight, but to convince your classmates that big is beautiful.

I'm up for a SDN pre-osteo quad-off any day of the week. I've got some serious quads.

I'll put my right quad up against anyone's... my left is hypotrophied due to a knee surgery... but I'm still steadily approaching a 500lb squat... 15lbs left to go (video to follow upon completion =P)... stuck at a 100kg snatch though... the lack of mobility in my bad knee gets me stuck with any more weight than that...

Only downside is my glutes are increasing in size too fast... It's to the point that I'm having trouble wearing my gun anymore because of the squat-***...😱

i just up'd my weight about 2-3 weeks ago, but still feeling a plateau. so i've been more mindful of my diet and i pushed the reps up to 15 from 12. i was surprised that three more reps over three sets would have such a drastic impact. before my workouts were getting easy, they're back to being challenging and difficult again.

so for those who are stuck, trying changing up your reps, or make sure you're using different exercises that target similar groups. for example, don't have just tricep extension, but also do dips and incorporate free weights. that way you have other exercises that keep things different and target other supporting muscle groups as well.

For most people, 15 reps will be in the range of anaerobic endurance training, whereas 12 reps will be in the upper range of muscular hypertrophy.

What you are doing is called "periodization", and it is good. Do this for eight weeks, and then drastically increase your weight, drop your rep range down to no more than 5-6, and take a good 3-5 minute active recovery (i.e., stretching) between sets. Do that for 8-12 weeks.

Also, don't think of your routine in terms of exercises. Think of it in terms of movements. There are a million different ways to extend the hip or to flex the arm, or whatever. Mix it up.

Nope. I am finishing up first year OMM tomorrow at DMU (our last written test) and I haven't taken my shirt off once. That works perfectly for me since I have found I'm not really digging the OMM as much as I thought I would. You're not going to ask your patients to remove their clothing and, truth be told, you can feel everything you need to VERY EASILY over a t-shirt/gym shorts.

First of all, good for you. But there's no way i could challenge u on that. i wouldnt be surprised if ur a relatively tall guy who weights in the 230 lbs and higher range. 500 lbs is almost 5X my weight......meh

Secondly, a "bad knee" is a crappy excuse. I've had 3 knee surgeries on my right, in the last 4 years. And its coming along ok. you work it, no more atrophy. beautiful.....

Calling DocJulez

It's a quad-off!

quad-off.jpg

What you got?

HAHAHHAHAHHAHA
well i HAVENT got a pic of my quads handy. lol, not particularly something i carry around with me. but i'll go digging for some stuff/take a picture of them when i get a chance.
those are very pretty thou. Sadly, i dont do enough cardio to get that tone, but muscle bulk is great, and strength is quite good for someone my size....IF I DO SAY SO MYSELF 😀

ps. those legs look pretty clean shaven.........hmmmm

I don't remember if I was shaved for that picture or not. If I'm riding a lot, I will shave my legs, both for the ladies, and to protect against getting hair in my road rash if I crash.

My quads are bigger now than they were when I was just doing a lot of heavy squats and stuff. Dragging my 230# *** around on the bike has blown my legs up nicely.

i believe it. now if only i were 230 lbs so i could have blown up quads 🙄

shave for the ladies, eh? how kind of u. TT, has anyone ever told you ur a real catch?
