If you guys want some good info go to www.illpumpyouup.com

Right now im strictly working on gaining muscle mass. So I lift heavy weights along light weights with much more reps. Im taking NO-Explode for energy while working out and it works FANTASTIC! As soon as im done working out I take a scoop and a half of muscle milk as my recovery drink! Its working great for me. Look at that website, it has tons of info and articles! Ill work on the trimming down a month a half before school starts!

muscle milk is fattening.

fyi... you change OMM groups and partners frequently and during just about every lab you have to work on people of different sizes, shapes and sexes......diagnosing a problem w/ palpation on a 200lb dude is pretty different then on a 100lb woman

You don't HAVE TO do anything of the sort. Recommended but certainly don't HAVE TO.

Wow. Riker is afraid of girls. Not very much like your namesake, are ya Riker?

check out the contract you signed.....

anyway...this is professional school....no ones gonna laugh in your face if you've got man-boobs or something....

this was the last time I respond to one of your posts

I don't understand this. If people are refusing to touch a woman's back with just a bra on how are they going to diagnose patients/do physicals/listen to lungs with a stethoscope? Accept only male patients? What about doing surgery?

I hope I never run into you at any hospital I work at...assuming you really did get into PCOM. Be a professional, we aren't in 6th grade (the girls don't have cooties).

I do. HUGE ones....

I've been working out regularly for the past year. I have not been able to put on any weight at all. I have tried various protein supplements and daily vitamins, but with no results. A little more information......1 hour/day 5-6 days/wk. I have been working most major muscle groups each day with 3sets at 6-8 reps/set. Also do cardio a few days a week. I'd love to put on about 15lbs.

Thanks in advance,
T

I am by no means a nutritionist or a personal trainer.

However, how has your body fat percentage fared? If you have been losing fat and gaining the same weight back in lean muscle, then you're just becoming more "cut."

To gain weight, you have to increase your caloric intake primarily in lean protein. This may seem counter intuitive, but matter isn't created from nothing. If you expend the same amount of calories that you absorb, you will be at relatively the same point you started.

you only do 3 sets for each group?

This man is correct.

I'll make it real simple:

If calories in > calories out = you will gain weight

Concentrate on adding a few hundred calories to each of your 3-5 balanced meals during the day and you will start gaining weight. If you're not gaining weight at this level of calories, then either up your calories, lower the amount of cardio you do, or both. You will eventually come to the proper level for you to gain weight.

Also, make sure you are focusing on the right goal. "Getting in shape" is not the same thing as "gaining muscle" in most cases....right now you're doing the former. Don't be afraid to add a few lbs of fat along w/ your new muscle. Unless you're on juice, have perfect genetics or are in the peak of puberty, you have to accept some fat gain.

You could do try all the fancy diets and supplements in the world...but it all comes down to what I wrote in the first line of the post

Tuning up your workout is a different story, but for a relative novice in lifting, anything you do will work if you lift hard and your diet is in check.

Tiagao, you sound like you're in the same boat as my husband. Try as he may, consuming more than 3200 calories a day- very healthy foods too, lots of protein- working out on proven lifting regimens he just cannot gain weight. He increases the amount he can lift like crazy but just can't add the inches. Or if he ever does, the second he changes one thing it all goes away. His metabolism is just too fast.

Mine on the other hand.....but I've been doing well the past few days with the working out, shaping up for OMM labs!!

....a bit more info.

My caloric intake is at or above 3000/day. When I say that I do 3 sets/excercise, that is not 3 sets/muscle group.

Thanks for the information everyone.

And Lfribble is right. My strength as increased, but the inches and pounds are hard to find.

Go me! Just went to the ice cream stand with my mom, sister, niece and husband and got a kiddie size no sugar added fat free scoop! That was definately a first!

well....you just haven't passed your caloric threshhold yet..... keep bumping it up a few hundred a day and try that level for a few weeks....eventually you'll find what you need to gain....no one said its easy....for some people eating to gain is a real pain in the a$$

I've actually followed this thread for a while... I hope it's alright if I jump in now. I had been working out pretty regularly for a while, but was traveling around the last three weeks and am finding it hard to get back into the gym. I'm stuck in NYC and work a desk job and I'm finding it really hard to motivate myself to work out. When I'm not living in the city, I'm very outdoorsey and I'm looking forward to getting off a wait list at some school with some woods around it so I can go hiking or whatever.... something other than working out on machines in a gym, or fighting the throngs of people in Central Park or on the riverside paths. Well, my gym membership runs out in July, so I should try to get the most use out of it as possible... so I'll try to make it there today... I won't try... I'll do it.

have u guys never seen a naked chick before? what the hell is the big deal about changing infront of a guy / girl? how the hell will you guys do a pelvic exam on a hot young 25 year old? how will u guys do a breast cancer check on a 40 yr old milf? granted its not always like that, but u get the point.

grow up.

u guys want a jumpstart? go find some titties on the net. you guys are professionals, and to think seeing a boob will make u guys pop. lol little kids, shame on u.

Mies: I doubt any school would make you wear anything that you aren't comfortable with 🙂 . I bet you could ask to wear some sweats or a t-shirt and nobody would mind..

NOT TRUE. You are required to be in shorts/no shirt for guys and shorts/sports bras for girls. If you're uncomfortable beyond belief and freaking out about having someone touch your skin or see you shirtless you'll have a LOT of problems with a lot of the other physical exam skills required to be a med student and a doc.

God, I hate being at the beach in a swim suit. I mean a one piece, racing suit. I'm a girl, so that actually covers a lot. NOT cool with the whole shorts and sports bra thing! Don't they have any sort of provision for people who have a religious, moral, or other objection to being half naked in from of a room of random strangers? Should there be kinky music playing in the background? I'm starting to feel like my mother gave me my first name for a reason (it is commonly accepted to be a stripper name). Wow, I really hate this. I'm not even okay in moderately TIGHT clothing, much less hardly ANY clothing at all. Invade my personal space at your own risk, suckers! I punch, and I punch HARD. All those boxing lessons finally pay off!:zip:

Well now we just have to guess your name. Hmmm let's see.....Destiny? Bambi? Diamond?

Does anyone else cycle?? I find that its a great(and fun😀 ) way to keep in shape!

Anyway, I've got my Trek 6000 and my goal is to ride 1,500 miles this year...

I cycle, I have a custom Seven and I am riding about 3000 miles a year right now. I used to ride more in the neighborhood of 5k a year, but skool is beating my *** down.

I had to give up lifting too.... I feel like a woosie.+pity+

.......Sunny?

Actually, none of the above. There are two schools of thought on my name
(1) Stripper, hooker, someone who gets paid to remove articles of clothing for men
or
(2) Rich girl with friends with food names like Muffin and Candy.

Thanks, Mom. That's real nice.

I should also mention that ScTx and Sunny08 are both me. I forgot my password on my home computer, so I had to come up with another name. I accidentally logged out at home. I can't remember what email address I used to create ScTx, so...they're both me.:luck:

......WTF?? Are you ****** serious????? [post further edited by moderator - personal insults are not permitted - ShyRem]

All kinds of reasons, see the skin, see landmarks, palpate the ribs, bony landmarks, see the bony landmarks, all kinds of things. We did a lot more first semester than second, although that's pretty much because now we're doing more extremities, C-spine and not thoracic stuff. But really, it's not big deal. You might be self concious at first but you get over it very quickly. You're too busy trying to listen to the teacher and get the technique down to care or to even look at anyone other than your partner. It's really not a big deal. Also, it's not like your shirt is off for the full 2 hr lab. It's only off when you're the pt.

I hope you are joking...Even if you are. This is no place for you to drop the F bomb. Talk about unprofessional. My fellow poster, grow up and develop a better vocabulary. Your vernacular is anything but appropriate. It would seem to me that a person who finds the need to ridicule another, lacks the quality needed to be an Osteopathic Physician.
The Osteopathic Oath states, "I will endeavor to work in accord with my colleagues in a spirit of progressive cooperation and never by word or by act cast imputations upon them or their rightful practices". Essentially, the oath is about us working together, building one another up while we build up our profession. There are individuals that have personal reasons to feel how they feel about being touched or touching others. Allow them to have that right to feel the way they feel. Everyone is at a different place along the path or journey. Why not be the person that helps the next person up and over the rock rather than be the person that steps on their fingers as they struggle to hold on.

I apologize for my ranting to those of you that are reading this. I just want us all to get along.

Thanks, Ocho!

Yeah, well, sarcasm doesnt come through too well over the internet, does it?

Anyways, I still hold to what I said. If you arent comfortable with having to touch other people, or have them touch you, are you sure you want to do this? I mean, patients wont be touching you all the time, no. And you wont be in tight clothing all the time while seeing patients (unless you choose to dress so like some of the female doctors I've worked with), but they will reach out and grab you sometimes. You cant punch them. But for the sake of medical school, you're going to have to get over it or get a bad grade in some classes, especially since you are wanting to go to D.O. school with OMM labs.

Sorry If I hurt your feelings, I do apologize. Friends?

It is amazing how many people just don't like being touched. Even as an MSII, there are fellow students who just are unable to relax enough for some techniques to be used. Sometimes you can work on them enough to get them to relax, sometimes not. But it's still interesting that after 2 years of OMM classes, plenty of folks are not comfortable being touched. It is something that you will get somewhat used to - perhaps not entirely comfortable with, but used to.

As for patients touching you: patients who are afraid, scared, alone, etc. will often reach out and grab your hand, arm, leg. Post-ictal patients have been known to throw a punch or two. Psychiatric patients have been known to be.. well.. "friendly". Or not-so friendly in a very physical way. Certain areas of clinical medicine have more possibilities for physical contact than others. Perhaps you would rather go into radiology or anesthesiology? Or surgery? Something where patients are either asleep or where you just look at pictures of patients. There are options for people who decide they love medicine, but hate patients (yes, you'll meet these folks).

However, back to the original point of this thread: you will have people of every shape and size in your OMM class. Don't feel bad about how you think you appear.

I have major reservations as to whether the original comment was, indeed, at all sarcastic, but that said, I do appreciate the apology.

Before you decide to attack someone else, you may want to consider that the person may have valid, concrete reasons for saying something or feeling a specific way. I treat patients all day long every day, and the very fact that I, myself, would be so very uncomfortable if I was in their position makes me more receptive to their level of discomfort. This, I believe, not the desire or ability to wantonly discard articles of clothing while random strangers grope me, is what will help me in my medical career.

Best of luck to you.

Now I'm really intrigued. I don't know a lot of strippers so I'm having a hard time coming up with names. Maybe the guys could help me out with this one. :meanie:

I have no problem taking off my shirt as long I get to continue to wear the SpanX...hahahahaha

I just dont want people slapping my love handles like they were those toys with the rubber ball attached to a rubber band hitting a paddle.

hahahaha

Plus I have more hair on my back than I do on my head. I doubt anyone else would want me to take my shirt off either.

Hey who has a good picture of those guys with the hairy backs getting out of the water looking like a wet rat?

hahahaha

You need to come to AZCOM next year so we can see you in your spanx. And don't worry, some of us girls can get together and wax your back for you "40 year old virgin" style. :meanie:

I really think I'm going to have to get a spray-on-tan when school starts. Though I will never look as good as The Hoff.

Yours is my favorite SDN name btw.

I don't think anyone would require you to disrobe against your wishes. In OMM class we had everything from shirtless/sports-bra and sports shorts to sweatpants and baggy t-shirts. You can detect rotated vertebrae through clothing; it's not quite as easy but it's actually great practice for developing sensitivity. You do need to get used to people poking and prodding you, though, mostly the back at first. If you're uncomfortable with that, undoubtedly they'll let you observe and not force you to participate, but you'll still need to pass the practical.

Best of luck,
Therapy Ball

I have no problem taking my shirt off. I'm almost an exhibitionist. This "poking and prodding" in the back you speak of sounds icky though.

So does AZCOM not have a set dress code for OMM? I couldn't find one anywhere.
