For me, I would be happy with either overall, or just defining TMDSAS science GPA as BCPM. As it stands, all of my engineering classes get lumped into my TMDSAS science GPA, and those are the only ones I got Bs (or in 1 case a D, but "fortunately" that was a graduate class) in (with 1 or 2 non-engineering exceptions.)

oh man - that really does suck. 🙁 Sorry about that.

so what are my chances?

i started out in cornell as a non premed bio major at Cornell...my gpa for fall freshman year was 3.05. I only became a premed sophmore year...and my grades went up the entire time.....my gpa over junior year was about a 3.94...but the overall averaged to about a 3.5 My mcat is a healthy 39. I did a little bit of research (no publication), some ER volunteering, and I worked at a tech support helpdesk for 2 years (10 hours/week during school year, almost full time during summer) to pay off work study. I am an officer at an ethics club here, and I tutored a kid in prison (makes for good interview conversation). I'm also invovled with some leadership stuff on campus.

my list of schools is linked in my signature

what do you guys think?

With a 3.5/39, I think you have a good chance at getting into many of the schools on your list. I love the way you worded your tutoring, "Tutored juvenile felon how to pass parole board." For some reason, that made me laugh. If I were on an ADCOM, I would let you in just for that 🙂

Good Luck!

Seems ok. any shadowing?

I shadowed while volunteering in the ER
and since it was ER docs, i saw all types of stuff

But in all honesty of course it makes you unique. (Just never give blood).

What languages are these? Anything useful for practicing medicine in this country?

Hi I was just wondering what are my chances for any CA schools, U of Miami, Penn COM, NYU, Cornell, Columbia, Oregon, UofW SOM, George Washington, Georgetown, NYMC, Drexel, SUNY Upstate, U of Rochester

Already I have applied to all CA schools but I am wondering about the rest.
any help would be greatly appreciated

How many schools should I apply to?

STATS:
3.65 GPA at competative UC school
3.45 Science GPA
34R MCAT
EMT work
Clinical Research in ER
Fly Research (1 publication)
Tutor Underserved teens
Volunteered in Mexico helping docs at clinics

thanks

I've actually got an interesting case, stats as follows:

MCAT: PS-11, VR-13, BS-9, WS-N
GPA Cum: 3.55
GPA BCPM: 3.38

4 W, 3 in one semester, 1 D in organic (repeated the course and got an A), also got an A in organic chem II

Transferred schools once,

Home State: IL

Fairly good Extracirriculars, including TA for organic, work for clinical medical research for 3 years, Went abroad to offer humanitarian relief for 1 month in a third world country, a couple of shadowing opportunities etc.

So are my scores enought to get me in? I'm thinking that it will all come down to the interview

Yes; but scores aren't everything. Your MCAT is awesome, your GPA is okay...kinda depends on if you are getting all A's now and the D's and W's were in the distant past. Also, it will depend on your interview (as it does for everyone, even those with a 3.8 and a 40), your ECs, your LORs, and your essays.

Yah the Ds and Ws were actually all in my sophomore year, after sophomore year I transferrred schools and have had about a 3.8 GPA if you look at just my junior and senior year, I still feel like its all up in the air, especially since my bio MCAT is so low compared to my others

Please help me decide if I should even apply to Columbia. Money is tight, so if I don't have a chance at some of these schools, please let me know.

http://www.mdapplicants.com/viewprofile.php?myid=6145

Last 30 hours were all A's. Very strong LOR's. Good personal statement. I'm taking a year off to work (currently a chemist in a sample analysis company) and will start travelling after interviews.

Hi all!

This is my first post, but I've dropped in on SDN drop-in a few times in the past. I lucked out and did better on the MCAT than I thought I would - what are my chances are at getting in to Baylor or Duke? My weak points: I come from a small state school, and my research is mediocre.

Thanks in advance for your responses!

it def. won't hurt to try. your MCATs are a lil above average for both schools. though your overall GPA is on the low side for those 2 schools, your BPCM GPA is very good.

you are exposed to research somewhat so that's ok. your small state school is disregarded w/ your high MCAT scores.

so i think you should go ahead and apply. you have a very good chance at both.

I can't decide if pretty much all the schools I applied to are out of my league... I have a decent MCAT score (33) but I got an L in writing (wtf.. 😳 )

I have 3.75 GPA and 3.63 BCPM at Ohio State.
I am a biology and anthropology double major.

MY EC's are:
-Biology 101 Teaching Assistant
-Living Unit Commission at OSU (Student Misconduct Committee for Residence Halls)
-National Society of Collegiate Scholars
-Alzheimer's Nursing Home Volunteer
-Plant Pathology Research (10 months)
-Biological Sciences Honorary member (elected position)
-Intramural Tennis
-Lab Preparation For Biology Classes at OSU
-Biology Tutor
-Hospital Volunteer in High School
-Shadowing Doctors in High School

And I applied to:
Boston U
Ohio State
University of Chicago
Wright State (not too worried about)
Yale
Medical College of Ohio (not too worried about)
Wakeforest
Johns Hopkins
Georgetown

Am I insane to think I am competitive to these schools? Please be brutally honest, I need to know. 😕

You might be going a little light on the number of schools and could easily add 5-6 more. Your numbers are right in there with Boston U, Ohio State, and Georgetown though. And you have some good safety schools. If you added a couple schools in each category, you'd be golden (at least by my standards).

Your chances also depend on your MCAT. If you have scores, please list them.

Also, are you already an optometrist? If so, you can totally use that to really expand on your opportunities working with others and possibly clinic-related experience.

will be done optometry school right before i matriculate.

and im taking my MCAT right away...

hey guys, i still have a year to go but i'd just like to know what you guys think of me right now.
3.8 BCMP
On a 4 yr scholarship
no MCAT yet (hoping for 30 of course)

Research:
1 semester of research on microvasculature (possible pub soon)

Volunteering:
~100 hours of volunteering at 2 hospitals over a summer
2-3 days of shadowing a couple of different physicians
~25 or random volunteering over 3 years like habitat for humanity, elder-aid, Katrina relief, etc. (each only a few hours though)
Also, i've been doing wildlife rehabilitation for 8 years (is this worth puting on an app??)

Clubs:
1 year active member of pre-med society
1 semester academic bowl club

LORs:
okay, not great

I am only applying in Texas and not interested in going to a top-tier school, just wanna get in. 😉

Can i interest anyone with a bump?

Hey guys, Found this site and wanted to see what you all think(i'm a couple of years away from applying, but good guidance is always important)

18 y.o. male at Duke (rising sophmore)

3.6 gpa, 3.46 science gpa (currently taking orgo over the summer)

No mcats yet, obviously,

7 months and counting of research in a genetics lab studying ADHSP, 18 months in HS working at a USDA lab

my track right now is:
majoring in molecular bio and music, minoring in japanese ( will also complete a minor in chemistry, but my school will only award 3 total degrees) I also plan to study abroad in Japan for a semester

Don't have the clinical stuff yet, but I plan to start soon in the hospital shadowing/volunteering

My ECs center around music and science(too many to list)

What do you think? Is there something else I should be doing at this point?

Sounds good for now. Try to increase your GPA, study hard for the MCAT, start getting some clinical experience. Don't worry too much about your "chances" right now- you're too far away from applying for that!

hi everyone,

http://www.mdapplicants.com/viewprofile.php?id=6171

just graduated from UCSD this past June in computer engineering. I decided to try for med school my junior year. I was a little discouraged by computer programming, I couldn't see myself doing it for the rest of my life. I started getting into medical informatics and was fortunate to have an abstract accepted and pending publication. I've also had some great experiences hospital volunteering and being mentored by a radiation oncologist at Moore's Cancer Center at UCSD.

a lot of schools i'm applying to are definitely a shot in the dark, but i hope they will take a second look at my "unique" situation.

If you want to know what your chances are, I'll tell you after this application cycle since I have the same GPA as you 😀 Good Luck, man... you're doing the right thing by applying to every school in the country 😉

My turn!! My Turn!!!

Haha... Just kidding, but here goes.

GPA - 3.65
Science GPA - 3.7
MCAT - I'll tell you in October.
Majored in Engineering.

Worked in consulting for about 2 years. 3 by the time I apply. Will be 26 years old.

ECs
Bike riding.
Black belt in martial arts.
Piano playing for a very long time. (Assorted activities to mention with respect to music)
Put together a 5K race w/ my girlfriend (who is brilliant) --raised 6 grand to help build a girl's dorm in Tanzania. We'll be doing the 2nd annual version of that race this year.
Some other small volunteering type things.
A little bit of shadowing experience.

ECs that I plan to add BEFORE applying
Shadowing an ER doc. Working out the paperwork now...
Community clinic volunteer.
(I am lacking clinical experience, so I'm trying to get that together before I apply in a year)

I feel like I've got a shot with a good MCAT. What do you think?

What kind of martial arts.

A friend asked me about this and I wasn't sure what to tell him because I don't know enough about chances with low stats....

He only has a 2.79 BCPM GPA (3.45 AO) and 3.12 overall. But, he has a 31 on his MCAT (10PS, 11VR, 10BS), which clearly shows he is capable. Is anyone with a science GPA that low ever interviewed anywhere???

He showed marked improvement each year and was a Division 1 athlete. Also, has some good medically related ECs, and took 2 years off following college to do research (only 1 pub.).

I know he's a smart kid (probably smarter than me) who just screwed up, but I just don't know what to tell him with such low #s.

His GPA is quite low so it will be very difficult for him to get accepted. He may want to try to apply directly this year and see if he gets in. But probably he will need to do a post-bacc program to improve the GPA. Good luck to him!

The Stats:
GPA: 3.33
BCPM: 3.0 (no upward tread)
Graduated from a top liberal arts college
Went to an SMP and finished with 3.75
MCAT: 35N

EC's
Shadowed primary care physician
Volunteered in ER
Tutoring
Research throughout college

Some Schools:
BU
Tufts
UChicago
Rush
Loyola
GW
Temple
Drexel
NYMC
Albany

So my main concerns are my undergrad GPA and that my clincial EC's are all recent. Should I try one or two of the really top med schools? Any suggestions for schools to add/things to do while applying would be appreciated!

how do you think my chances are and what schools do you see me getting into.....im a california resident

BCPM 4.0
AO 3.94

although i have a lower MCAT

V(9) P(9) B(10) W(Q)

and i wont be able to send recomed letters till like october 1st?

Why aren't you retaking the MCAT? You might as well if you are waiting until October for letters of rec. That would take care of a lot...

that would have been a good idea...but i thought my letters would have been ready in july.....and i indicated that i wasnt going to retake it on amcas...

Recent is good for ECs. I say you should try your chances at a few top tiers, just because you get to go on this ride but only a few times in your life.

So here are my stats:

Emory University
AO: 3.55
BCPM: 2.4 (ouch)
Overall: 3.02
graduated May '06

Bio/Poli-Sci double major, BS degree
EC:
-my dorm's Res Hall Assoc treasurer, several student groups w/leadership positions, pre-health club, HSTAT, etc.
-shadowed several doctors
-hope to work in med research at Emory this fall
-some hospital volunteering
-other volunteering in community

MCAT: Taking it in August, crossing fingers and expecting mid-30s+ (if current practice progress holds up)

LOR: I have pretty good referrals, so I'm not worried about that.

Other: Studied abroad for a semester, joint-enrolled at a college while in high school. Academically, I did extremely well in both (4.0/3.8, respectively). I have pretty good writing skills as well.

Med schools: Considering my GPAs, it goes without saying that I'll be applying to the lower tier allopathic schools, caribbean schools, and even DO schools. At this point, I'll go to whatever accredited school that accepts me.

There are a few other things to keep in mind. I grew up in a rural part of the South, an area that would qualify as "underserved" in the healthcare perspective on the AMCAS application. My science GPA started off bad, slowly got better, crashed again my senior fall semester due to stress from a family medical situation, then relatively came around for my last semester. As a double major, study time was scarce and there wasn't any room to take more manageable science courses to boost my BCPM GPA. I was more concerned with graduating on time instead of shelling out for another expensive year at Emory.

Also, how important is the difficulty of the undergrad school and the courses taken when it is compared to one's GPAs? Emory claims it puts more students in medical school than any other college, so I guess that a good sign for its hellacious pre-med program. And I've taken a ridiculous amount of credit hours (158 total) to satisfy both majors and graduate in four years, including a 22-hour fall semester as a senior.

I would consider a post-bacc program or a masters, but I'd rather do other things that don't cost a lot of money, like tons of research and volunteer work, before I would commit to more debt ahead of med school. How would that pan out?

I realize this is a lot of info to take in and analyze, but all help towards a stressed out pre-med is greatly appreciated!

Is Ohio State Collge of Med good to OOS applicants?

As for Jefferson, in my experience, most med schools are pretty amenable to LORs that don't satisfy their requirement if you are an non-trad.

I don't know. That is why I am asking you guys. 🙂

Your chances are slim for MD, but a good MCAT will definitely help. I would recommend doing a post-bacc to raise your GPA and you can do some ECs on the side to further strengthen your app.
I don't know about your chances for DO. If you're really eager to apply this cycle, then go ahead. But you will have a better shot if you wait, IMO. Good luck!

I think so. The copy of MSAR that I have is outdated (05-06) but according to it, instate: 130, OOS: 80. Decent chance, I'd say.

Thanks for the input. I'm only planning to apply to the few med schools that I have some slim chance to get into, plus a few caribbean schools and DO. Maybe 8-10 schools max during this cycle. If not, then hopefully I'll continue to do research and try again with a broader application pool.

ineedhelp85 - u can PM me if you want 🙂

I dont think they really care if you ESL or not. Numbers are very important in the game. I am ESL myself in december it will be 6 years as I arrived 🙂

I applied with 24P last year with 6 in verbal in all NY state schools. Needless to say I did not get accepted. I have almost your GPA and also done research, I am coming from the family with extensive cancer history,I was working full time while full time in school to support my family since I was only one who was picking up language fast and we did not have money.

Nobody even looked at it. They told me raise your verbal score. Well now, year later, I have 9 and trying to apply with 9-nes across the board. I also picked up spanish ( and love this language) so now I am considering schools in PR and to tell you the truth Ponce is my number one choice. The warmest e-mails I ever got were from them.

Well I dont have much hope this application cycle but here is my statistics:
MCAT: 9,9,9 P
BCPM:3.69
AO:3.72

Good Luck to everyone!!!!

Hmm, if your letters won't be in until October, have you considered retaking the MCAT? If you got a 30+ I think you would be in a good position to get accepted at CA schools. The 28 now makes things a little more difficult, since you are below the avg matriculant's score.

Hi everybody,

I am taking the August MCAT this year and will be applying late in the cycle. I wanted to know what you thought my chances were. So far I have scored a 28R on my third diagnostic test and think (hope) I will increase to at least a 32. My MD apps profile is below..thanks so much!

I am taking the August MCAT this year and will be applying late in the cycle. I wanted to know what you thought my chances were. So far I have scored a 28R on my third diagnostic test and think (hope) I will increase to at least a 32. My MD apps profile is below..thanks so much!
You should have fairly good chances at top schools if you can score a 32+ on the MCAT. A lower score (29-31) will keep you competitive, but probably not at the top schools. But you have a great chance of getting accepted somewhere. Good luck on the MCAT!

Hi everyone! I guess I'm here with pretty much the same questions as everyone - where should I apply with my set of credentials, and what are my chances of an acceptance somewhere?

I have an overall GPA of 3.87 and a BCMP GPA of 3.66. My MCAT is a 28N with a very unbalanced spread - PS 7, BS 8, and VR 13.

After studying as much as possible considering my summer schedule (had a 40 hr/wk job as soon as finals were over, then left in late June for the intensely busy 6-week pre-med program I'm currently in) and taking several full lengths, I have decided not to retake the MCAT in August. My scores were relatively stable (a few points up or down here or there), and I simply do not have the time between now and then to do adequate preparation. My fear is that my score will either drop or stay basically the same, and then not only will I have a sub-par MCAT score, but also a very late application.

I am now trying to compile a list of schools at which I might be a semi-competitive candidate. Any help would be very much appreciated!

I am also including a link to my mdapplicants profile, but I'm not sure if I'm doing it right! 😳 http://mdapplicants.com/viewprofile.php?myid=6220

Hello everyone,

I have the same old "what are my chances" question. The only thing is that I am an international student, doing undergrad in Canada and hoping to go to med school in the states or canada.

Can anyone advise me of which schools I should be applying to? Here is a link to my MDapplicant profile. I have selected 15 schools that have in the past accepted a siginificant number of internationals (I got the number from MSAR), but I am not sure if I should apply to more school (or if I missed any).

Comments would be appreciated. Thanks,

Knio
