The Official 8/10/12 MCAT Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
No sure what happen.. this is the second time I took it.. 1st time was 5/12/2012 10/4/10. 4 in verbal..
Now again.. 12/4/10 still 4 in verbal..

I had a friend who took it three times and did exponentially better on his 3rd try. If you still have it in you, definitely go for it.

Got a 32Q. 9-11-12 so I didn't do so hot in PS even though in practice that was my highest score usually. My average was 33/34 but I choked with pressure on PS 🙁 Whatever...never touching an MCAT book again!!!

Holy craptastic mcat score. 5 in verbal thank you PT Barnum and your museum. Gap year just turned into gap years. I'm applying SMP praying for a better mcat in January.

30 total: 9V (what a bitch), 10P, 11B. And my writing was surprisingly low, even though I thought I nailed it! LOL. I scored a little lower than my AAMC average. Overall, I'm relieved that it's an okay score, but can't help feeling really underwhelmed after all the work I put in. Just glad it's over. Good luck to anyone who hasn't seen their score yet!

hahaha the Barnum passage is all I can remember from that godawful verbal section. The whole thing was so ridiculous to read! Good luck next time.

39T, but split horribly: 14 PS 10 VR 15 BS T Writing Sample. I know I can do so much better on VR - first ever practice test was a 12, and I've scored as high as 15. Is it worth retaking just for that?

ughhhhh....

Say that again and I am going to come kick your ass. 🙂 That is an awesome score. Don't retake it!

OH MY GOD 32M...I'm so happy that I'm seriously gonna cry, on AAMC 3 I got a 30 and everyone was saying how you should not trust that score blah blah blah. Plus on all the Princeton review ones I was consistently getting mid 20s. HOLY CRAP I can't believe I got a 9 on verbal, I didn't even read the last passage hahahha. Wowwwww this may be the best day of my life. Only little scar is that M, but WHO CARES, NO ONE LOOKS AT WRITING ANYWAY WOOOOOOOOO

Oh and my split was 12 PS, 9 VR, 11 BS

I just got my scores, 35M. Totally freaking out about the M for some reason. I didn't practice for it and I guess it shows. I never scored this high on practice exams before, I had a 34 as my highest. 13V 11PS 11BS so I hope that verbal can overcome that writing score. But I am thrilled by the number score!

I feel like I am going to vomit. I had a feeling I didnt do as well as I hoped but I cant believe I did so poorly compared to my practice tests. I got a 31L. My practice average was around 36 and I had scored a 40 on my most recent. I have also got an A on every paper Ive ever written yet I did horrible in writing. I feel like 6 weeks of solid studing is down the drain.

I really don't think you have anything to worry about. According to most threads on this forum, the essays don't seem to matter much to Med School and a 35 is a great score. Congrats!

I clicked my sign in and ran out of the room before the screen could load. Finally gathered the strength to walk back in. Anyways, I got a 29Q....12/8/9 just short from a 30 (and not quite balanced) but honestly, I am completely satisfied because it was my 3rd and final time taking it. Over the last month I was seriously feeling down because this was my last shot at medicine and giving up a dream really got me depressed. I am applying for D.O. and the Australian program at UQ on top of MD so my score should be semi competitive for the first two.

I am really surprised with my each of my sections because they seem backwards. PS was always my strongest but for this exam, it seemed tough and BS, I felt, was super easy but I guess so did everyone else resulting in a 9. I was expecting 10-14 in BS and 8-10 in PS. For verbal, I averaged about a 7 or 8 on practice exams but this verbal was a monster. I felt lost and scattered throughout so I cannot complain about an 8.

My first two scores were 23S (9/5/9) and 23R (7/8/8) which I was really disappointed because my AAMC exam range was 28-34 (with 28 being on AAMC11 and generally higher scores being the lower AAMC exams). My TPR range was 24-28 however but those exams are really hard.

This time around, I took Kaplan online and my range was about 28-31 with verbal always being my lowest. Although a 29 might not be amazing, I am happy because I, at least, meet the minimum to have my application looked at and my ECs are very strong and I have a pretty competitive GPA.

Congrats to everyone who did well. For those who didn't, keep your head up...I'm probably the worst case scenario for everyone so feel free to use me as an example... I took the exam 4 times.. first time voiding. Remember that its not the end of the world to retake.

Honestly, no one cares about writing. I know someone who got a 38J which is the lowest writing score possible and received multiple interviews. They did ask him during the interview however about the writing score and he just said "my adviser told me it didn't matter" and the admissions committee accepted it. You'll get in somewhere with that great score. Congrats!

I hope your friend's experience bodes well for my own reception! I got a 35K (11 VR/ 12 PS/ 12 BS). I was really hoping for a higher score, though the 35 is exactly my AAMC average (excluding AAMC 3, which I took before content review). I'm just annoyed that I postponed my exam THREE times, with the thought that I could get my score higher. Truthfully, though, I came nowhere close to a SN2ed study plan level of prep. And clearly I skipped all writing prep (although I thought I did an able enough job on the test).

Anyway, we'll see what happens with the applications. Some schools are definitely getting crossed off the list now!

I was hoping for a higher score my avg was 32 got a 28 actual (9 9 10 ) pvb .. i think test day nerves got to me but I definitely did better then my 23 last time so I'm not complaining 🙂

Thanks for the encouragement. Before I started studying I would have been thrilled with a 31 but my practice scores really got my hopes up. I may retake, although after getting this score I feel like it is just a crapshoot as to what I might get. Plus schools will still see the 31 on my app.

10/8/10, (28Q)

Thoroughly disappointed in myself. I scored a 35 on an AAMC I took a few days prior, and went in with confidence at an all time high.

I have never scored less than a 10 on verbal on any of the AAMCs I took. I was rushed in VR during the actual test so I suppose that's what led to the 8.

Oh well, guess I'm retaking it. How bad does taking it twice look? Do schools average the scores or take the most recent?

i took the test twice and went from a 28 to a 35. Taking the test twice and showing improvement (i.e. >2 points) is often looked highly upon because it shows persistence. taking twice and getting the same score is somewhat looked down upon. Most schools take your most recent score, few average your scores, and very few take your best score from each subsection.

My first time was at May 24, which I got a 31Q even after three weeks of full-time MCAT prep. I was disappointed and even consider finding a job instead of applying. (my average is between 37-42 in practice) However, this time around, I got a 37, not great but more acceptable. I definitely think you can redeem yourself the second time and please don't give up.
Don't say that man. I'm sure 99% of students would LOVE to have your score. I mean a 37 is only the 98-99%ile. Nothing impressive. 🙄

Yay so happy with my 31 R 10/10/11 a 4 point improvement from last time (27 M). Rosalind Franklin here I come😀😀😀

23K (PS: 10, VR: 3, BS: 10, WS: K)

When I saw my score this afternoon, I was in utter shock.

The AAMCs that I took as full-lengths were as follows:

Date PS VR BS Composite
7/12/12 AAMC 7 10 6 10 26
7/18/12 AAMC 8 10 7 10 27
8/3/12 AAMC 9 11 11 10 32
8/5/12 AAMC 10 11 7 10 28
8/7/12 AAMC 11 9 7 9 25
AVERAGE 10 8 10 28

VR has always been the most difficult section for me, but I honestly didn't think it was going to turn out the way it did.
I'm not going to give up though.

To everyone who was unsatisfied with his or her score, I know it hurts.
Don't let this setback define you.
I was set to take the MCAT in August 2011 but I postponed because I did not feel ready.
I studied all of this summer.
The total timeframe in which the MCAT was a part of my daily routine was about 8 months. This was a lot of time and energy devoted to studying and changing how I take tests. I want to be a physician so badly though, that it doesn't matter! I will keep fighting and giving 200% no matter how long it takes.
Congratulations to everyone who made 30 and higher!
Next time, you're gonna see me in the 30+ post because I am going to destroy that freaking test.

Is it just me or does it seem to be a verifiable phenomenon this MCAT season that an inordinate amount of people have been scoring lower on the real verbal than they have on AAMC practice tests? I admit I'm probably just reaching for a rationalization of my own score here, but I felt the VR on 8/10 A.M. was more manageable than on the practice exams, yet I still found a way to score lower.

I got 34Q (PS12, VR10, BS12). I am pretty happy with that score and probably won't retake. I am from Canada. Is my score good enough to get into some decent American Med Schools?

Just checked my scores.... 39Q (14, 11, 14)

I am so thrilled. My verbal was a bit lower than my average, but my overall score is within 1 point of my AAMC practice averages. Such a burden off my back.
Good luck this cycle everybody. Stay strong 🙂

WS P

was a little dissapointed in my PS and my VR score because was averaging 10s-11s on PS and 8-9s on VR. I actually thought the VR was really easy on the test day, I guess not...

Time to study for january test....

should I still apply DO? I can apply to 3 free school via Fee assistance

Impressive. Hope you post on the 30+ thread 🙂 Congratulations.

I took the exam at 8:00 am and scored a 42N (PS 14, VR 13, BS 15). Needless to say, I was ecstatic upon seeing my score.

I post my score here not to boast, but to add credibility to the advice that I have:

To those of you who got the score you were aiming for, congrats! To those of you who did not, please do not worry yourself to death. There is no magic trick to getting the score that you want. The single most important factor that I believe led to my success on the MCAT was my determination to become a doctor. My opinion is that this, far more than any petty advice you might hear from some stranger on SDN, will benefit you the most. I am not saying that all of the information here is useless; if it were, I would not be on here. I am simply saying that you shouldn't get bogged down by the wide range of oftentimes unsupported claims that many people make here. Again, do not come here looking for a magic method of studying. Make a strict study plan, stick to it, and always be driven by the end result: a career as a physician.

👍 Wise words

No practice tests (Kaplan or AAMC)
Kaplan diagnostics Jan. 2012 Score: 24

Attempt #1: 39Q (14P, 11V, 14B)

Highly surprised to say the least. I worked full time (>40 hr.) researching this summer (with an upcoming publication). I could not bring myself to study more than an hour a day (if that). But the last 3 weeks before the exam I started using the Kaplan MCAT cards with a partner (3hr, 3 days a week) and then the last two weeks I did ~5h per day doing the Kaplan section tests. I didn't to do anything that would give me a scaled score because I figured knowing would only make me cocky or damage my ego.

Good luck in you applications everyone!

31Q - (9/10/12). Higher than my AAMC average, which was a 28. Wayyyy better than my past writings - (26P 10/8/8) in March of last year and before that in April 2010 a 19P (7/4/8). It's been a long 2 years...so happy to be retired from this! Best of luck in all of your endeavors!

Thank you all so much - not to sound overly emotional, but when I told my parents they cried. They knew how much the test had plagued me, and all the pain I had been through over it. I feel you all on how discouraging it can be, but just stick to your dreams and continue to press on!
