The Official 8/10/12 MCAT Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I find it so crazy how you can score 13 or higher on verbal consistently.... amazing. I would kill for that talent (serious). I scored 11 once on verbal and was jumping for joy. I will be taking AAMC 10 tomorrow, hope to you make you proud 😉

Thanks! For anybody out there scoring 10-11 on EK101 (like I was) it is completely possible to improve on the FL verbal sections. I feel like the FL are less ambiguous and easier to decipher. Keep at it, and the hard work will pay off 🙂

How did AAMC10 go? Did it this morning, and I felt like the PS was more difficult. BS was a surprise, although I did feel very comfortable with the section. Finished PS with 15 min left, verbal with 10 and BS with 30 minutes left.

AAMC #3 - 35 (12, 12, 11)
AAMC #4 - 40 (13, 13, 14)
AAMC #5 - 41 (13, 15, 13)
AAMC #7 - 41 (14, 15, 12)
AAMC #8 - 42 (14, 14, 14)
AAMC #9 - 41 (14, 13, 14)

AAMC #10 - 42 (14, 13, 15)

I haven't done anything the past 2 days. Getting complacent. I took AAMC 8 & 9 last week (13/11/13 and 13/11/14, respectively) and will take 10 & 11 this week. I feel I should look through all my books again but just don't seem to have the motivation. Hard to believe we're less than a week away.

Not a lot of people taking MCAT in 8/10/2012 huh? Seriously looking at this thread make me nervous, especially the dude with the 41 on AAMCs lol, how you do that? 🙂

lol don't worry you have the average people like me barely pulling 30s... -.-

AAMC 10 tomorrow is my last one

Edit: decided to do AAMC 11 first and scored 10's across the board... easily coulda got 11/10/11 though so I'm fine with it (was too lazy to check anything over, made lots of silly errors)

I still have AAMC 10 and 11. Maybe I'll do the AAMC11 tomorrow, since it's the hardest one LOL. Way to kill my own confidence before the test :x

I know that feeling...Was going to take AAMC11 today, but a late night plus a headache made me reconsider. I'm starting to see the wisdom in not studying the day before the exam. I think we're all going to need the time to recover and mentally put ourselves in the right place. Good luck everybody on the last couple of days. Its almost over.

Lots of studying, plus a solid background in the sciences and a lifelong love of reading for verbal (in addition to a ton of practice passages). No need to be nervous. Confidence and state of mind have been really important in how I've done on the FL. You've got this! 🙂

what the heck... took AAMC 10

13/11/13

Composite: 37 (........) :|

my mind is completely blown right now... is AAMC 10 really easy? I didn't feel lost once during the test... my second highest score was like 32 on AAMC 5. Guess I will just say this is an outlier

Just noticed that I lucked out hard on the verbal... oh well

In the case that I have to retake, what kind of reading for verbal did you do? I'm pretty sure that verbal's gonna be my lowest score this Friday, so on the off chance that I need to retake the test, I'd like to know what kind of reading would improve my chances of scoring higher.

AAMC #10 - 42 (14, 13, 15)

AAMC #11 - 38 (13, 11, 14)

Done with practice tests, which is nice. Verbal went down from average, but I'll be optimistic: this keeps me humble 😀

Good luck everybody during the last few days!

Awesome score, congrats! Bet thats a nice confidence booster 🙂

I didn't do reading for verbal, I read mostly because I'm a bookworm kind of a guy. I read mostly fiction (sci fi, fantasy) although of most help for verbal was probably Aristotle, selected dialogues of Plato, and some anthologies of Ethical and Moral Theory. Again, I did this for "fun" and I can't really say how much it helped in verbal. However, I feel like reading denser material over the long term has helped me keep my focus and not get intimidated by abstract passages.

Finished up with all the AAMC FLs:
#3: 33 (12/10/11)
#4: 38 (13/11/14)
#5: 36 (13/11/12)
#7: 37 (13/11/13)
#8: 37 (13/11/13)
#9: 38 (13/11/14)
#10: 37 (12/11/14)
#11: 38 (12/11/15)

Final thoughts:
PS—Not sure why I regressed to 12's on the last two tests, though I wouldn't be terribly disappointed with a 12 on the real thing. Might need some luck on test day to get back to 13.
VR—I think it's safe to say my VR is stuck at 11.
BS—I don't know what's changed, but I'm feeling really at ease with the BS section. Odds are it'll be my highest score.

I'm starting to see the wisdom in not studying the day before the exam.
Yep, me too. I planned on doing some studying tomorrow, but at this point I can more readily see myself getting a question wrong due to mental fatigue than I can getting one right because I studied it the day before. I'm going to quickly go over AAMC 11 and take a last look at a couple of my weaker areas, but other than that I'm done.

Hi All my fellow 8/10 ers
I am freaking out- just took aamc 7 and !@#$!@$
(I posted this as a regular thread- but thought my "partners in crime" for this friday might have some great insight!)

This is my AAMC in order that I took it

AAMC 3 : 9/11/10
AAMC 4: 9/8/9
AAMC 11: 7/ 10/ 9
AAMC 5: 9/11/9
AAMC 10: 11/10/10
AAMC 9: 13/11/9 (really confused how that happened)
AAMC 8: 12/11/11

So I left AAMC 7 for today as my last push- After I finished I felt confident- expected an 11-12 range for PS 11-12 for VS and a 10-11 for BS- scored it and my heart sank:
9/9/10. (For that earthquake passage- I got EVERY SINGLE one wrong ) I seriously felt like bursting!

So now the question is: Do I skip it on Friday? Do I take it and Void it? Do I stay confident that AAMC 7 is just ridiculous and go on?
HELP PLEASE

I can see how that score would rattle you after you just got 30+ the previous three tests, but I would say you should go ahead and take it. It sounds like you just had some bad luck, and even then you got a 28, which is by no means terrible. Unless you truly feel you aren't prepared, join us Friday. 🙂 You can always void if things get ugly, but my honest impression is that you're ready now.

Just finished AAMC 10: 14/8/13....

Did anyone else find AAMC 10 PS section easier than the other AAMCs? On the other hand, trying to get to the double digits in VR but my highest so far is a 9. I'll be extremely happy if I get an 8 or 9 on the real thing though, seriously. I hate VR 🙁

Gosh I can't belive we are almost there... I have just got to study the the very beginning of the the last summer and a couple weeks now. So far my aamc scores have not been bad.
28 aamc 3
26 aamc 4
27 aamc 5
29 aamc 7
Started studying
34 aamc 8
34 aamc 9
31 aamc 10
32 aamc11
They are always pretty balanced, PS is my lowest and might have VR or BS one point higher than the others. Im a little nervous about my variability in scores, should I worry? ... I really just need 28 or 29 but I would love to break 30... Think I have a shot?

guys I am kind of getting nervous eeeeeeek

I feel fine for the PS and have accepted BS will not improve past this point.

VR I still feel kind of sketched out for. I tried multiple times today to focus and practice but I just cannot, I guess I will just leave it to fate now as I did like 8 of the EK 101 VR tests and did alright on them.

Also I honestly have not even written 1 WS section essay... I looked at you how are supposed to set up the essay (Thesis, antithesis, synthesis) so I know the general format thats it though. It is too hard to focus when its not real life 😛

EDIT: I would love some input

I need to score an M for UBC medicine on the WS of the test.... after looking at the essay format I have came up with the following structure

Paragraph 1: General intro, define key terms, paraphrase prompt, Example + how it relates, conclusion
Paragraph 2: Transition, example + how it relates, conclusion
Paragraph 3: Transition into when the prompt is true, and when it is false. Relate back to both examples?

Paragraph 3 seems kind of funny to me and I don't see how it would flow too well.... any input will be nice. I will be embarking on an 11 hour drive tomorrow... will look at this tomorrow night!

Good luck to all, if you can truly tell yourself that you put in the time, you will do fine.

Tomorrow will be my second attempt- in the first attempt I did horribly but I got a S in writing- and I didn't even have any information about what they want- All i did was follow their prompts- Answered the questions they asked.
The question is worded in a way that you know what format they want it in.

Good Luck!

In for the exam today. Retaking after I got a 26 the first time April dealing with ex-gf, 4 classes including Orgo 2 Lab, and a lot of other crap. Strong background in science, with strong science gpa. Got 10s on each and 6 on verbal.

Hoping to bring up my score to the low- mid 30s now that my head is clearer. Averaging a 34 on the practice exams, with a 37 on AAMC10. 13,11, 13.

Good luck to everyone taking it today!

OK! Just finished and I have NOOO idea what to predict. Time was a killer for me. Did my last PS passage with 3 minutes left. I felt that the passages were info heavy but doable. Verbal, not terrible, one passage was very wordy- and once again time killed me. Was about to click on my last question when time was up- so one wrong for sure 🙂
Bio was orgo heavy in my opinion, and the bio passages very wordy and leaning to experimental. I got to finish on time, but I already identified 1+ errors I made due to time pressure.

Wouldn't be surprised if I bomb it and wouldn't be surprised if I do well! 🙁
A month has never seemed longer!!!

(I hope nothing I said is against rules)
Any other 8/10 wanna weigh in on their overall feeling of the test?

I thought this one was a lot more difficult then any practice test I had seen. In my opinion most of the passages were far more similar to the Kaplan section tests then the higher number AAMC practice tests. On the practice tests I would have enough time, but I felt really rushed on this one. I agree it was definitely more Orgo heavy then normal and the biological science passages were long with some obscure details. The 1st practice test I took when I started studying was AAMC 11 and I got a 27. I can safely say that I felt a lot worse about this one and that I'm in for a redo. When I walked out I felt more like I had been in a prison shower for 5 hours then taking the MCAT. This is the first time I had taken it so maybe I little it was nerves, but I'm not sure.

I agree with the shower feeling- I felt like jumping off something 🙂

Weirdly I felt most similarly to after I took AAMC 8- which I did well on even after being completely uncertain. I hope that pattern repeats.
At this point a 25 wouldn't surprise me and a 35 wouldn't surprise me either- I have NO idea how I will score.

Not sure what to think. I definitely now understand why it is that people tend to feel terrible exiting the testing center. It felt different than the AAMC's, particularly BS. Immediately afterward (finished about an hour ago), I was feeling like I must have just gotten 5 points below my AAMC average. I'm not thinking in such extremes now, but still...

PS—The first couple passages tripped me up a little more than usual. One passage in particular was just weird. After that, though, I recall myself hitting a groove, though I can't remember anything specific about that portion of the test, only those two passages.
VR—This was the opposite of PS for me. I felt I started off really well but then faded on the later passages. Hopefully we get a nicer curve than it appears some earlier examinees did. I'm expecting right around my AAMC average.
Writing—Didn't do any preparation for this section. Not completely happy with my essays but I have a hard time caring.
BS—Tougher than the AAMC's, I thought. It just seemed way more ambiguous. Didn't perceive it to be skewed one way or the other in terms of the bio/orgo ratio, felt pretty typical of the AAMC's in that respect. Overall this section was a very odd experience.

And so we wait.

P.S was killer, much more difficult than the regular AAMCs.

Verbal - no idea - never good at it. My guess is it's a little harder than the normal AAMCS, heavy information. I ran out of time 🙁

B.S not that bad. I don't know what other people talk about. I personally think it was not orgo heavy. Maybe I just didn't notice.

And yeah, I finally understand the feeling of finishing the MCAT. Honestly, I felt very indifferent. I have no idea how I did, kind of depressing a little lol. But yeah, I definitely did not do very well in P.S and V.R, have to guess so many questions.

I didn't think the test was much different from the practice tests in terms of difficulty, but it was definitely different in terms of subject matter.

PS seemed odd to me. I'm a little worried about this one, I think I did alright, not great but alright. But for all I know I blew it.
VR I actually felt really good about VR...hopefully that is a good thing.
BS didn't seem Ochem heavy to me. This has overtaken VR as my strongest area in recent full-lengths but I had to completely guess on 2 questions, which is never a good thing.

Overall: could go either way, same as everyone else! But it did seem comparable to the practice tests to me in which case I think it is reasonable to assume we will get the score everyone on SDN says we will; your AAMC average +/- 1 or 2 points.

The biggest problem I had with today's mcat was the time constraints, I haven't had that issue with the aamc practice tests so I was surprised. It was my first time taking it for real though, could be why. I thought the same thing about the orgo, it seemed more concentrated than normal. It seemed like the bio was styled a bit differently than the aamc exams. We'll see though, I walked out really not knowing what to think, it could go either way. I literally have no idea how I did. I prepared using exam krackers and have been studying fairly steadily throughout the summer.

This was my retake and I dont know what to think.

Originally, I did very well on PS and VR but did poorly on BS. The past 3 months I studied a lot and put more emphasis on BS. I did all of the AAMC's, scoring the highest in VR and about the same for BS/PS.

I thought the BS wasn't too bad, the 4/13 MCAT that I took was MUCH MUCH worse. That said, the PS was very weird! There wasn't too much calculations, and it was just a very weird section. I got an 8 on the AAMC 11 and I am pretty content with that since Physics and Gen Chem are my worst subjects. I was hopping for an 8 on PS this time, but I am not sure. It was just very unusual questions. No circuits, very little mechanics and kinematics.

The VR I found was very difficult. I usually score pretty well in VR but I thought not only was the passages tricky but the questions were very difficult and not factual. Ugh, I am worried! That do you guys thinks?

Btw, my 4/13 had like 20 pages of thread, this is only page 2? lol

Does anyone know if having less people good or bad?

I agree, I ran out of time on all the sections and had to rush. BS on AAMC 11 I finished with 10 min left and did well. Here, I had to guess the last 4. 🙁

PS was my worst one as well. I think I recovered nicely though and didn't find bio or verbal that bad. But I did almost run out of time in BS which is unusual. I thought PS was sorta crazy though, and I guessed on a couple, ouch.

[edit] I had been scoring pretty well on PS too, 11-12 on 6 aamc practice tests.

I am a retaker and I studied my ass off this time around. I was ranging from 28-31 on the Kaplan exams and 29-34 on the AAMC exams. I thought this test was extremely unbalanced.

PS: It started kind of hard but I found my rhythm after the first passage and it seemed to get easier. There was a lot of calculations but nothing insanely hard. It was weird because the first few passages had calculations then once you feel behind in time, a lot less calculations popped up.

VR: This section was insane for me. I was never amazing in verbal but I felt this section was insane. The passages were really long, convoluted and not interesting to read. Maybe one or two were ok but the rest seemed like killers. My past MCAT verbal was not even close to the difficulty of this one.

BS: I felt it was pretty easy. Maybe the Kaplan exams raised the bar for me but there wasn't any passages that seemed "killer" or impossible.

The AAMCs are not accurate of the exams at all. AAMC the three sections seem balanced in difficulty but this one was all over the place. PS was medium, Verbal extremely hard and BS easy. I really really hope I did decently in verbal.

PS - Okay, not great. I'm thinking I got in the 9 or 10 range.

VR - Very hard!! Started off strong but faded when I started panicking because of the time. Ended up re-reading stuff and not comprehending anything. Didn't even finish reading the last passage so I ended up having to guess for that whole section! I don't know why this felt so much harder, but the passages all seemed really long.

BS - Felt good about this. I actually liked that it was orgo heavy since I've taken more chemisry than bio in college. I finished about 12 minutes early and was able to check all my marked problems.

Overall - Really hoping for high 20s, wouldn't be surprised if I get like a 6 in verbal. Hopefully I rocked bio. Bad thing about taking this so late is I won't know whether to retake before its too late.

But, for now, its over.

I felt awful about the test. I came out thinking that the test itself wasn't that bad and that I just wasn't able to stay focused and perform adequately on it. I am not sure if I should have voided it but it is done for now.

PS - This was hard. Was running out of time but finished it right on time, guessing on a couple of previous ones.

V - This was definitely the hardest section for me. I have never been great on Verbal but somehow I fell really behind and I had to guess my entirely through the last passage. I skimmed and then answered maybe two questions and clicked through the rest.

B - Okay but the passages were long. I ran out of time on the last two questions.

I am thinking about retaking it while the material is still fresh but am not sure if I should perhaps wait till I get my scores back. Any suggestions?

I definitely had difficulty with a few passages on PS. VR felt fine. BS felt fine also (I thought the BS was easier and more straightforward than AAMC 11.. althought I thought several questions were total 50/50 guesses. anybody else feel that way? maybe it's because I'm better at o-chem...)

but me thinking BS/VR were OK made me feel like I bombed. I'm worried I underthought some of the BS questions 🙁

I think I scored anywhere from a 26-34 😛

I'm starting to get worried now that everyone seems to have thought BS was easy. My best sections of all the practice tests were the BS portions of AAMC's 10 & 11; as I was taking those I knew I was destroying them. But today's exam was entirely different. The questions seemed less straightforward. Sure, none of the passages were out-of-this-world difficult, but there were a handful questions that bothered me, which was never really the case taking practice tests. I'm probably overreacting though, because I think AAMC's 10 & 11 poisoned me to be a perfectionist in this section.

Now that I think back, our PS was indeed strange. I don't know what to make of it.

On verbal, I agree with TheAvgPreMed about the interesting factor of the passages. I'm usually pretty intrigued by most verbal passages, but these ones were extra dull. Luckily I for some reason managed to have laser focus for the first 3-4 passages.

It's amazing how right after the test I thought I'd done terrible, but right now I'm fairly confident I got around my AAMC average. 🙂xf🙂

Took the test on the 27th of July so this was a "back up"...

PS - Not too terrible, a little calculation heavy at times so I would say it was close to a Kaplan PS section..hopefully the curve will be as forgiving lol.

VR - ..I wanted to cry when I was doing my written, after this. I'm still mad. Started off strong, but then got bogged down a lot.. I had to guess on an entire passage and make half guesses on another passage..ugh.

BS - I felt good about this actually..O chem was a little heavy, but nothing unexpected.

Not to scare you or anything, but on AAMC 3-11 I was getting 8/9/10 on BIO and got a 4 on my first MCAT 4/13/2012. The AAMC is much easier. However, I felt this was more closer to the AAMC format. The Verbal was very difficult, I usually score well on verbal, but this seems to be awful.

Anyone else think the passages were extra long? Questions were very philosophical and not straight forward content, more like inference and assumptions.

PS was just weird!

So I just got out of the 2 PM test and I have no idea what to think. Is the test completely different from the morning one, the exact same or are they similar with a few things changed? I wasn't sure how things work with giving the test 2 times in one day. Anyway, it was a retest for me... got a 28 the first time May 31 and I have no idea what I'll get this time. Hopefully better than 30 though!

I'm really not sure what to make of the test..... I did a prep course with TPR and have utilized ALL of their practice tests (which many people claim to be more difficult than the real MCAT) as well as AAMC's practice tests (which people claim to be easier than the real MCAT). So I prepared myself for something that was between those two difficulties but I don't think any more preparation would have helped me do any better than I did today. The PS and BS sections were confusing, and this is coming from someone who was confident with the PS and BS sections through the practice tests. I felt like I had to make educated guesses on a lot of the questions. I always narrowed it down to 50/50 but had to guess. I thought for sure that VR was going to be my worst section but I actually felt the most confident about it. The WS prompts were super easy, in my opinion.

All-in-all, the test was NOT what I thought it was going to be like, despite all the practice FLs and practice questions that I've done. Not quite sure how to feel......😕

edit: dam looks like I lucked out. seems like it was a hard test

I'm not sure how hard it was, even the PS. I just had trouble recalling some things for PS and I feel it could have been easy for others. It felt like PS just hit on some of my biggest weaknesses. Who knows, hoping to be pleasantly surprised! But the whole point is to just get me into med school so I can't worry about it too much yet

Yeah I agree. It wasn't generally that it tested hard concepts but just that it asked confusing questions, especially on PS/BS...and this is coming from someone who has consistently scored 14-15 on AAMC practice PS/BS sections

I took the 2 pm test. I thought the PS was pretty difficult. The passages were long and some read a little like the verbal. The math oriented questions weren't hard, but the conceptual questions were killer. I will be lucky with a 10. The VS had some pretty tricky passages and the questions were full of analogies...what is this, the LSAT? That could be a toss up for me. I felt that overall the BS was easier than AAMC 10 or 11. It was more experimental, but that wasn't necessarily a bad thing since all of the answers were in the passage for the most part. I have no idea how I did at this point which is super scary!!!
