The Official 8/10/12 MCAT Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The VR was very dense and I didn't like it all had to guess and some questions were really gross finished with like a minute to spare

BS this section was very easy to me for the most part. I knew the majority and it didn't feel that bad. Hoping for an 11/12 for this section.

PS was awful for me I had to guess for like 3 questions because I had no idea how to do the calculations. Just hoping for a 9 in that section. Hopefully the curve will treat me well. Finished with 20 seconds to spare lol

WR i don't really care about and I did no preparation. Wish they would have cut it this year instead of next year.
Really hoping for a 31 but I'll be good with 29.

Yea I had one PS passage that was tough to read through which made the questions hard, obviously. I'm hoping to score somewhere within my practice score range of 30-34.

had the 2pm one. Damn that was draining.. only got 3 hours of sleep last night which was the worst part 🙁

just rolling around lol.

Anyways:

PS: PS wasn't bad, there were a few calcs that i didn't know and a few concepts but probably an average test for me.

VR: I usually only do 5-6 passages, and if i get to that 6th passage i usually end up with like 5 minutes to do it (i'm a slow reader btw lol). I got to the 6th passage with about 8 minutes, which was perfect for me... i had to rush a little but i still finished and only guessed on the 7th (and hardest looking) passage. I was content. the first 2 passage seemed easy.

BS: hmmmmmmm idk if i was tired or what but it was a little draining.. i also needed to pee at around 45 minutes left (like, a 1 minute long piss ). I had just peed the break before too!

Anyways, it was a little wordy and experimenty and had a few orgo which i liked, but not as much as i expected. I skipped a long passage and came back to it at the end with about 14 minutes left so i took my time and ready it word for word (i usually just go to the questions first) and tried to answer it meticulously but it was still super hard lol... tough one with a few experiments and wordy and bleh... overall though i hope i did well idk i can't really say for sure.

Writing? Who gives a crap. I started talking about a tv show in one of them, and in the other one i gave an example FROM a tv show but i acted like it was a real event lol... glad they dont grade on truthiness.

Latest couple practice tests:

3 days ago: AAMC 11: PS:10 VB:9 BS 8
5 days ago: AAMC idr: PS:10 VB:9 BS 10
7 days ago: AAMC idr: PS:10 VB:2 BS 10 (yeah, wtf verbal? totally bombed this one)

Good luck to everyone and see you in 1 month.

Hopefully this is the last time we ever have to take this monster again.

Took the 2pm test. I'm a retaker and I must say that today's exam was harder than my first try (6/21/12).

Anyway, I was able to manage my time properly. Had 2 mins left to review the questions that I marked for both PS and VR. And 14 mins left to review the expt'l passages in BS. Anyway..

The PS was kinda ok, though it was harder than my first try. There was one passage that seemed like part of the verbal coz there weren't any calculations, just pure texts! (good luck, right? I'd rather calculations). I checked on the two discrete questions that I remembered and so far, I got 1 out of 2 correct! So, we'll see.

Then, the VR section came. The VR for me is really the hardest part of the MCAT exam, mostly because English is my 2nd language and also, sometimes, I couldn't even understand what the passage is talking about. But for this test, I felt confident, surprisingly! I just hope I score better this time.

Last, the BS part. Well, BS was totally BS!!!! What can I say? Last 6/21, we only had 2 expt'l passages. But for this test, there were 4! So good luck!!! The discretes were pretty straightforward though. There were more BS than Orgo (I wish the other way around coz I'mm better at Orgo). But anyway, I did my best. Hopefully, my best will be good enough!

What did you guys think of the exam?

sounds exactly like me to a t.

English is also my 2nd language and i hate verbal but i did pretty well on it I THINK (knock knock knock).

I also prefer orgo but there wasn't much.

Good luck everyone

What up

I took the 8/10 exam @ 2pm
AAMC practice test (low = 25, high = 33)

PS - I felt this section was the toughest. I took all the practice tests from AAMC and a couple from TPR and I felt that this PS content was much harder than the practice tests. I felt the G-chem was of normal difficulty, just the physics was a pain. However, I felt none of the passages were "WTF is this" and I could always narrow the answer choices down. And I do agree there was one passage that resembled a verbal passage.

VS - I felt that the verbal section was fair. I am a slow reader as well and I typically only am able to finish 6 of the passages and make quick guesses on the 7th. I did exactly that on this section. A few of the passages were a tough read but overall I think this VS was easier than the others I have faced on the practice tests.

BS - As compared to the practice test I have taken, the biology content on today's test I felt was above average difficulty. This section has always been my best and I always had a good feeling about my performance after a practice test. For yesterday's test, I have not a clue how I did. I am also under the impression that our BS section had a lot of experimental content. As for the ochem content, I felt it was of normal yield and easy.

Took the 2PM test:

PS: Thought this section was extremely physics heavy, and not so much plug and chug with formula's, but very very conceptual physics... which killed me, I think. There was one beginning passage that threw me for a loop despite it hardly having any calculations.

VR: Usually my best section. I can honestly say there were a lot of diluted answers, a lot of eliminating to 50/50, then guessing. Nothing was really clear-cut. Really set me for a loop that 2 or 3 passages consisted of 3 or 4 paragraphs that seemed to have 12 sentences each... I remember having to scroll to get through just one paragraph. Totally different from any other VR I've seen (and I took 3 real MCAT's).

Writing: Couldn't help but feel the prompts were begging for an emotional response in regards to politics.

BS: Whoa. Experimental passages, much? I'm hoping I was right for the most part by search the passages majorly for the answers... still, don't feel too confident. Looked up 3 passage questions that acted as stand-alone's... got 2/3 right (I think... I am finding mixed answers for the 2nd).

Same here. I dont know what to think and I am a bit terrified. The PS and VR were very hard, even though I tend to do well on them.

Took the 2p.m

Physics - so so. I had about 8 minutes left to review. 🙂

Verbal - so so as well and perfect timing. i usually don't look at how much time i have left, because it really bugs me. sooo i took a look at how much time i have left for the first and the last time on the last question of the verbal section and noticed that i had 15s left. 😀😀

Bio - yeah this was fun, because it was heavily experimental. i usually get bored from same old bio mcat q's. but this one really had my brain working 😎😎

Overall - it wasn't too difficult but it wasn't too easyy as well. i'd say this test was around the average or slightly more difficult, but not overly difficult.

Good luck with everybody and enjoy the last two days of olympics! 😀😀😎

Took the 2 pm.

PS --- I love physical sciences and it's usually my best score, but ugh.. I didn't feel up to par. and it was SOOO physics heavy! I felt like there was only a couple of general chemistry questions!

Verbal - I actually usually feel pretty iffy on verbal, but here for some reason I didn't feel too bad? I hope that doesn't mean it was just super easy and the curve will be unforgiving 🙁

BS -- All I can say about this is it was so weird. Different than any practice test I've taken. So detail heavy.. just really bogged me down 🙁

No timing issues.. but a couple of guesses. Sigh. I cried the whole way home! I feel awful about it overall.. it was just so unlike any of the others I've taken! And I've been getting great scores! But I just don't think today was a good day to take it for me .. yuck

Andddd... I felt like there was so many things/topics/typical high yield stuff I was expecting to see and it was totally NOT on there.. and then a lot of stuff I was prepared for but totally didn't expect.

2pm test

I felt the PS was quite difficult. . I really have no idea how I did coming out of it... Can't wait for September 11th to actually get the scores!

Well, after finally taking the dreaded MCAT, my thoughts are:

PS was as usual for my studies, a bit more difficult than the other sections. I ran out of some time near the end after skipping some questions to review later. (Not to mention I forgot to use the restroom before entering and had to go the duration of the section). However, I think for the overwhelming austerity of the first section- I believe it could have been much worse!

VR had some passages that seemed fairly viscous with some fairly inconclusive answer choices. Also, as future advice to test takers, be sure to give your optic muscles a break and look at a distance before jumping right in like I did! I felt like I was nearly going blind by passage 5 with the text going in and out of focus, then again I did forget to bring my reading glasses for the exam...

BS seemed the most fluid to me. The passages and topics covered were of actual interest to me, and I found myself enthralled by the opportunity to actually use some out of MCAT textbook knowledge to support my answer choices.

Overall, for a first (and hopefully only) official MCAT exam, I think it went pretty well! But I guess we will see in about a month when the scores come back... 🙂

Good luck to all!

Wrote the Morning MCAT
PS- Finished with 15 minutes left. Felt pretty good about it
VR- I have no concept really of how well I did.... Ran out of time on the last question.
BS- Finished with 15 minutes to spare. A couple questions I were really not sure about

Allot of people are saying that it was really hard. I honestly don't have any reference point. Hopefully they curve it in our favour.

Feels great to be done!!

Don't worry too much, I'm pretty sure you did excellent! Just chill and enjoy the weather 😎😎

hey did u guys have an immensely dense experimental heavy bio section like we did for the 8/17 MCAT?

Me too- I have been checking any questions i remember. I have days I am confident I did well, days I already see that abysmal score on MCAT thx. I get all we can do is wait 🙁

This is totally me. I've stayed away from SDN for a while, but it's eating me up now. Part of me wants to know and get it over with. Another part doesn't want to face the score haha.

I'm not sure what to do, I plan on applying this cycle to one or two schools that I'd like to go to, knowing that I'm applying very late in the application cycle and will probably have to try again next year. I'm working on my personal statement right now (It's taking me much longer than expected!) and would like to submit my application within the next couple days. Should I just wait until I get my score back and then send my app out? I'm not sure how confident I felt about that MCAT and don't want to submit an application if I end up just bombing the MCAT.

Nope, submit your application as soon as you're done with your personal statement. Coz it takes at least one month for it to get verified. By then, you'll have your MCAT score and you can choose to continue with the app or not.

What I did was submit my application a month ago- with only one school. And as soon as my MCAT comes in- and fingers crossed Im happy with it- Ill add the rest. Adding schools gets processed the next day

Anyone else find the bubbling up need to just YELL while waiting for this god-damn score???!!! I am so impatient.

No lie...i've had dreams about getting my MCAT score back. This can't be healthy 🙄

I have had dreams:
1- got my mcat score and I was elated
2- got my mcat score and it exploded in my face
3- retook the mcat
4- broke into the AMCAS building and changed my score

All of these are actual real dreams I had in the last few weeks- this is a retake for me and the first time i absolutely didnt feel this way- I am taking it as a good sign 🙂

What time are scores usually released? I should know this by now sure hope I won't be in he middle of class or work eeeee so soon!

Yeah I can't even do my school work. I keep thinking about the scores coming out. I hope I survived the verbal and ps section.

I just wanted to wish everyone good luck! I'm insanely nervous to check my score but whatever everyone gets, just remember that you tried your hardest. GOOD LUCK!

Could not sleep last night- trying so hard to stay off SDN and get my mind off it- but as you can see- Unsuccessful!

Me too... I'm at the AAMC website with my username and password typed in to check my score but I can't click submit. I'm too nervous! I will do it in 10 minutes no matter what after I get my nerves calmed. Has anyone checked their scores yet?

Great... I just checked and the scores aren't posted yet. The torture continues... I was hoping they would post it a little earlier.

BTW: seems like not a lot of people took it this date- check out the amount of posts on all the other dates. Wonder why- and i hope it doesn't affect the curve.
