Hi guys,

How is the studying going for those of you taking it on arguably one of the worst days in American History? Finished content review yet? Any FL?

Just wanted to do this so we could keep each other motivated.

Ok now back to studying !!!!!!

AAMC 3 28 9/8/11
AAMC 4 26 8/8/10
AAMC 5 30 8/10/12
AAMC 7 25 7/8/10

The issue is mostly physics (specifically waves and optics)...two topics that I KNOW will show up on the test. So maybe I should stop taking FLS for 2-3 days and try (again) to get those concepts down? I also have all of the TBR books that I haven't had the chance to touch because of the way things turned out (took TPR course and working FT, so not much time outside of TPR course/homework/ and work). But maybe if I DID reschedule, I would have time to do all of TBR passages, and make sure I have ALL of the concepts down, as well as not having the essays to worry about, which is somewhat of an issue for me...hmmm..

Where from do you reason that waves AND OPTICS is "mostly" the issue? I have seen waves persistently on aamc's, however, optics questions might be asked once or twice on a FL. You can probably miss 4 or 5 questions and still only drop only 1 point on a PS section.

That you are not familiar with optics is one thing. But can learning every detail in optics cause your score to go up by more than two points? NO WAY!

Waves is a whole different ball game, there are scores of waves and specifically DOPPLER effect questions on every AAMC I have completed.

Most commonly questions are that I have noted on PS section are

1. Wave Characteristics and differences(transverse vs Longitudinal) (V=(lambdaƒ) etc.
2. Doppler effects
4.Newtons laws 3 laws! (F=MA ect.)
6. Momentum and energy problems
5.Ohms law and P=IV

Chemistry
6.Le Chatelier's this concepts is everywhere!
7.Radioactive Decay
8.Gibbs free energy
9.Electrolytics cells
10. Peridioc Trends!!

If someone would NOT be familiar with any ONE!!!! of these subjects, I would suggest to not test yet.

However, optics you can do with out, but if you know it, it will definitely help cushion your score minutely.

This is only an observation that I noticed, and decided to point it out to you.
Hope you don't waste your time too much on optics, but if you must, definitely know that..

Mirrors and Lenses are the same...but different! Here is why..

They are the same in the sense that they both deal with light.
Lenses have light go through them, and mirrors reflect it.

If they are converging mirrors and lenses...then the same concepts apply
If they are diverging mirrors or lenses......then same concepts or truly (A RULE) actually applys.

However ever.... Lenses that CONVERG are conVEX, and Mirrors that CONVERGE or conCAVE

alternatively........Lenses that DIVERGE are conCAVE and Mirrors that CONVERGE are conVEX

now that you set up your definitions, the concepts can be divided in to two categories as follows...Converging vs Diverging concepts

FOR DIVERGING...
Diverging concave lenses and Diverging Convex mirrors - generate smaller, upright virtual images or (SUV), image is always smaller than the focal point(a numerical distances from the lens or mirror) .....this is good enough info for diverging systems

Converging have 5 different scenarios play out...

WHY?

Because there are three 3 points from the distance of the lens that are the CRUCIAL to know
Point A. =The lens location
Point B.= f = focal length ( a distance from LENs with a (random) numerical value.)
Point C. [/B=]R =Radius of curvature which ONLY equals 2f! (thats all)

basically looks like this A.<------distance=(2f)----> B.=f <---distance------->C.(lensORmirror)

notice you can put an object in one of 5 different locations from the LENS or (C)
Location 1. left of A <--beyond radius of Curvature
Location 2. at A.....at radius of curvet
Location 3. between A and B (between radius of curvature and focal length
Location 4. at B at focal length
Location 5. and Between B and C between focal length and les

Now, when you are told what location the object is put at (which you are usually told) you can predict the .... size(magnification), if it is up or upside-down and real or virtual of the image that resulted from the location of the object.

A stupid equation people use that I never use( and it works for me not to) is the lens makers equation or 1/f = 1/o + 1/i. Where f = focal length, o= object placed and i= the objects image

Here are the concepts you NEED memorize for each location previously mention and its resulting image.

PLACEMENT OF OBJECT AT......(you can ignore the formulas at the end of each sentence, however, they are the lens makers equation reason for the result.)

1.Beyond radius of curvature (R)- image is Real, Inverted, Smaller(----R>I>ƒ ----1/f=1/#>R + 1/f<R
2.at radius of curvature...image is (R)- Real, Inverted, Same----I=R----1/f=1/R + 1/R
3.inside radius of curvature but beyond focal point - image is Real, Inverted, Larger---I>R--1/f=1/#<R + 1/#>R
4.at focal point ---NO IMAGE-- 1/f= 1/f + 1/∞(infinity)
5.inside focal point--(image is ) Virtual, Upright, Larger-----1/ƒ=1/#<ƒ + 1/-#

Other minor details play out, but if you understood what I tried to explain (assuming I explained correctly or coherently) then you can practice on any EK 1001 or Princeton discretes...they are not so difficult and you can fine tune some details I missed out on.

Goof luck....keep us posted.

Hi guys, good luck to you all. I am also taking on this date! I am retaker from 7/27 and boy the verbal really kicked my ass. Granted I only looked at EK and PR strategy but practiced little for either the verbal or science. Got 9s on both science sections without FL practice but a mere 4 on verbal ( had to guess on more than 2 passages!). I would like to come up with an excuse (e.g fasting and lack of practice). But I have a few days now to make some significant improvement and I need to MAN UP!.

My question is this: what material is the best for VERBAL practice (especially online)? I am planning on going through the EK and TPR book as well as the AAMC ones (as part of the FL practice). I also have access to Kaplan online stuff (would you recommend them for verbal?). For the sciences, it looks like I can build the stamina with FLs since I have decent background. Being ESL also does not help with verbal but I feel like I have good strategy and I just need to put it to use through PRACTICE. My problem with verbal is timing TOO. Any suggestion!!!!!!! Thanks and good luck!

what is your secret?

No secret that I know of. Hard work, I guess? I'm following Sn2ed's schedule, but condensed into 2.25 months with no break days.

Judging from your MCAT dreams, I'd say take it easy. The MCAT is only one of many, many tests in your future. Can't spend your whole life stressing over exams. 🙂

Just took my second full length and got 30!

I've been going back and forth between being strongest in phys and bio. It's like a simple harmonic motion or something 🙄

What are you guys doing these next days? I'm just taking FLs, but what are you guys doing for the days in between?(besides reviewing the FL just taken). Re-reading chapters?? I'm not too sure what to do

I'm just doing a ton of practice problems. I am averaging about 100 per day. I've already done 550 (and I am doing 100 more today). So by the time the MCAT comes, I will have done 1,700.

The best way to prepare for the MCAT, imo, is to expose your self to as many ways they can ask about the concepts as possible.

I think this strategy is working for me. I improved by 3 points just from doing the first ~450 problems.

aamc 9 34 (12/10/12) 😀

Oh very nice 👍 3 points is a huge difference!! Are you using EK 1001 problems or something?

I am using TPR Hyperlearning mostly. I am also using EK 1001 and I just got Kaplan and I am working on those.

Also, congrats on AAMC 9!

I had a horrible MCAT nightmare last night. The mcat's were given on ipads (or some sort of tablets). I was taking it on some shuttle, but then midway through I got dropped off and there was a gangster shooting vs police. I got shot in my leg, fell down, and managed to run away as they were shooting at me. I jumped into an empty cop car (perfect hide out), pulled out my tablet and continued my test as time was running out. I noticed I only had 15 minutes left for 3 verbal passages. I rushed 2 passages, but then noticed I left 6 questions unanswered in the last passage as time ran out - worst freak out ever...and then I woke up. By far my worst dream. Had a similar dream last week but don't really remember what happened except that I freaked out during the test.
My MCAT dream was that I took the exam but completely forgot the take the verbal section. No idea how that happened. So in my dream, right after the exam was over I realized it, and then I woke up, freaking out.

I took an exam at 1pm today just to test it out. Wow, I was soooo exhausted... I found myself unable to concentrate at all during the bio/orgo section and got 15 questions wrong on verbal! :scared: Just a warning to those who are also doing their practice tests in the morning...start practicing at 1pm👍

Time to exercise more to boost my endurance😴

practice test 1 (8/27/2012: 29)
practice test 2 (8/29/2012: 33)

to be continued...

Guys, school has started and my scores are plateauing 🙁 I haven't really had the time to review anything now that school has started, and I'm only able to half-heatedly finish up SN2ed's schedule while completing my schoolwork. It's the nitty gritty details and some small mistakes that keep tripping me up, and I'm scared that I don't have enough time to fully review what I learned over the summer. This is so frustrating because I feel like all the small details are leaking from my brain haha. Here's a breakdown of my scores so far (total [VR, BS, PS]):

AAMC 3: 36 (12, 14, 10)
AAMC 4: 35 (11, 11, 13)
AAMC 5: 38 (13, 13, 12)
AAMC 7: 38 (12, 13, 13)
AAMC 8: 37 (13, 11, 13)
AAMC 9: 38 (13, 12, 13)

I think at this point I'm just going to take the weekend/few days before the test to just review all my flashcards to make sure I have the tiny details stored away in my short term memory. Does anyone have any other ideas on how to keep the info fresh in your head?

Nice scores bro!👍 Do you have an itouch/ipad/iphone? Go to the app store and look for "MCAT question a day" , it's free. Spend like a good hour a day on that doing random questions really helped me for small details

Btw, the app has like a red "M" on its icon

Thanks! I don't think I'll be confident until I score like...a 40 lol because I have a terrible feeling I'm gonna do a couple points worse on the real thing and I need to make up for a lackluster GPA. The app thing is a good idea, and I wish I had the time. I will definitely look into similar programs for my Android though. Thanks for the suggestion! And I see you've been making great strides in your MCAT preparation as well 🙂

AAMC 3 (Mid/ Late July) 7/10/8- 25
Kaplan 1 (from book Aug 15th) 6/9/11 -26
AAMC 4 (Aug 16th) 10/12/10 -32 (much better!)

Hoping to get that up to a 34 or 35, by improving at least a point in PS and BS, which should be possible with more content review. I got at least 4 "easy" questions wrong in each section so I should be able to get those right with more knowledge. Here's hoping.

I'm going to spend the next 3 days just reviewing, then the rest of the time making sure I've reviewed everything, then re-reviewing things I'm still getting wrong with an AAMC test every day starting Tuesday. I'll re-read each EK chapter, make notecards on things I'm still not sure on, 1/3 EK 1001 questions unless already VERY confident, and taking the remaining 30 minute exams. Anyone have any other suggestions?

AAMC 5 today- 11/11/11 plus the always painful one question away in PS and in bs, SO close to a 35!

Seriously, that one verbal passage that everyone says is brutal was brutal, but I was feeling much better about PS, up from a low 7 at my first test to a high 11! I also recognized more of the bio this time from re-reading most of EK this week. Hopefully with another read-through and the ability to trust myself on answers that I'm iffy on, I'll be able to get both PS and BS up to solid 12s before the 11th.

I'm thinking of skipping an AAMC in order to rest up a bit more. Have people found that taking every single one is really important? Or will 7 vs 8 tests really make that much of a difference? I'm planning on taking one every other day with the last one next Friday, but I think I might take one Tuesday and Friday of next week instead, and pull out AAMC 7 since people seem to think it's the easiest. Help?

I was thinking along the same lines as you, doing 7 instead of 8, and honestly I don't think it will make a huge difference. And like me, you have taken other tests (Kaplan) so overall your getting the practice in.
I took aamc 11 as my first one since that is what was suggested by my TPR course and I am thinking of skipping over aamc 3 since everyone claims it is the easiest and readily available at no cost on the website.

I dissent with regards to AAMC 3. It has been like any another aamc test I've seen. If anything, its the toughest Verbal I've come across as well.

anyone else having headaches? I took a day off today from MCATs...feeling burnt out. I tried drinking coffee, taking naps, walking in the park, but am still feeling distracted. and the headache isn't helping... Any advice?

I don't think there is a big difference between 7 and 8 (score wise), but I find 7 to be a lot more difficult than 8.

On 7 I got: 10 PS 11 VR 12 BS
On 8: 12 PS 10 VR 12 BS (but I took this with a massive headache--I wanted to see how I would preform under adverse conditions.)

This was happening to me too.

The best thing is to not drink coffee (in my opinion) and to stop thinking about the MCAT for a while. And DON'T worry. It seems as if the headaches are brought on by constantly worrying about the exam.

I agree, I am a natural insomniac and these days regardless of how exhausted I am I cannot fall asleep and my entire day gets started later than planned, and the end result is that I am not getting in the 8-10 hours I want to 🙁

Any advice on calming nerves and not letting anxiety get the best of me?! I am having issues retaining information and performance is being influenced by the test anxiety now 🙁((

Dbate, sorry I meant taking 7 aamc exams overall instead of the 8 total available. Personally, scores on aamc 3 were more inflated in the PS and Verbal than the other 3 aamc exams I have taken thus far.

I have been doing problem after problem also in the weaker areas (close to 80 per day) and I can definitely see the difference 🙂
Hang in there everyone!

Hi guys!

Decided to take it in January instead. Best best best of luck, everyone!! You are all going to do amazingly well!! 😀 Also, thanks for the encouragement.

I have headaches too but coffee helps me. I do not sleep, however! It is so hard to fall asleep peacefully because of so many thoughts running through my head. I am also frustrated with everyone around me including my husband!
mcat stress is turning me into a,mean monster.

Same here. For some reason, being stuck studying while seeing your roommates and people outside goof off is the most annoying thing ever even though they're doing nothing wrong! First thing I do after mcat is hit the beach...

*Update

aamc 3 26 (11/5/10) *verbal fluke
aamc 5 32 (12/9/11)
aamc 4 35 (12/10/13)
aamc 7 30 (11/8/11)
aamc 9 34 (12/10/12)

aamc 8 33 (12/9/12)

...Looks like I'm staying around there 😕

BTW, how many days off are you guys planning to take?? I was thinking about taking the 9 + 10th off.

Update for me too:

AAMC 3 25 (7/10/8) -Early into content review
Kaplan 1 26 (6/9/11)
AAMC 4 32 (10/12/10)
AAMC 5 33 (11/11/11)
AAMC 9 36 (11/13/12)

I think familiarity with PS passages has been super helpful in raising that score and keeping it in a good range. Verbal has always been strong for me, but a 13 is my highest yet. I think this has a lot to do with my ability to concentrate better on these passages, maybe they were more interesting, or maybe spending the whole break telling myself that this was the real deal helped with that. For BS, I think re-reading EK bio this week was a good boost for my background knowledge, I'm getting fewer content based questions wrong. I'd be SO happy if I could keep this up though, this was my dream score from when I started studying, and I've given my whole summer to this stupid test.

ebasappa, I'm planning to spend Saturday the 8th going over the practice test I'll take Friday, and then maybe studying any remaining weak areas that come up from that test. I'll probably go over those weak areas again on the 9th, as well as my notecards again and maybe a verbal passage or two from EK to keep myself sharp. Monday the 10th I'll probably do the same as Sunday, spending maybe an hour or so total.

Started the Self-Assessments.

General Chemistry: 90%

Thoroughly disappointed, but then again it was pretty damn hard.

I really wish I could take 2 days off but I doubt I can. I've only just finished content review and have only done 2 FLs. I'll probably be doing either 2 FLs every 3 days or 1 FL every other day depending on how I do on AAMC 8 (which I'm taking tomorrow). I don't want to burn myself out because I noticed I got lower on my second AAMC (#7) vs the first one I took (AAMC #4) and I was tired when taking the second one so I want to be fresh for the actual test. The day before, my bf will be driving me 10 hours to the test center I am registered at (crossing the border from Canada to the U.S.) and I'll probably listen to EK Audio Osmosis in the car as a full refresher.

Hope you're all doing well and staying motivated! I'll be so glad when this is done!

Edit: I'm actually not done content review. Need to finish ochem 🙁

Anyone else freaking out? I just took my first AAMC practice test (#11, I took a bunch of Kaplan ones, but not AAMC) and got 2 points below my target score. I think I am burnt out (haven't had a break in a while) and possibly was not used to the AAMC format. I am really freaking out, and wondering if someone else feel the same.

What always helps me calm down a bit is thinking about how FORTUNATE we are to be taking the MCAT. Think of it as an opportunity. And we are very lucky to be given the chance.

I know several people living around the world who desire to become physicians also, but not everyone gets the chance to go to school in the U.S.

Anyway, good luck to everyone! Don't let it psyche you out, your mind plays tricks on you, everyone has the potential to do well!

😍 MCAT 😍 I am so grateful to have you in my life.

Writing on the 11th. Have a LOT to do, and I have a feeling I'm screwed, but for whatever reason I'm not as stressed as I normally am in these sorts of situations. I kinda wish I were though, since I function better under pressure.

I've barely reviewed bio/orgo. Only 1/3 done bio and have barely practiced it. Orgo I've only looked at the first two chapters of the TPR book and skimmed over the last 2. I've done quite a bit of chem recently and did a bunch of physics earlier this month but I'm losing my acuity with physics, so I plan on doing all the nova discretes again before the actual test.

G chem is still giving me trouble too. 😡.

I still have 134 passages to do from the TPRH science workbook and haven't even begun to think about writing section.

I've only done 3 full lengths:

AAMC 3 (August 22nd): 7 PS/7 VR/10 BS - 24 😱
AAMC 4 (August 24th): 11 PS/10 VR/10 BS - 31.. better but not where I want to be.
AAMC 5 (Sept 1st, actually I did the physics a few days earlier but was really out of it/unmotivated, so decided to do the VR + BS later on): 10 PS/11 VR/ 12 BS - 33.. better than before but I'd like to be hitting 35+ before walking into the real thing..

I did all of these AAMCs disjointed though.

At this point I still have 5 AAMCs left.. don't know if I should do them all before the 11th or save some in case I have to rewrite (which I really don't want to have to do). Honestly, I'd just be happy with a nice balanced score like 11/11/11 or 10/10/10. Anything above 30 and nothing below 8, at the very least, for this cycle since I'm applying to a few schools (I'm Canadian). If I get anything below 9 in any section I'm def rewriting next summer.

Anyone have any tips on how to cram for WS? And what are your opinions on the AAMCs..should I write them all or save some?

Don't worry about it man. Try another AAMC. I think 11 is the hardest anyway and it was your first FL. I got a 24 on AAMC 3 (apparently the easiest one) and a 31 on AAMC 4 2 days later. Your mentality going into the practice test has a lot to do with your score. You gotta get in the zoneeee. Plus the AAMCs have a unique feel to them that remains elusive to the practice FLs offered by prep companies, so as you mentioned, part if it may have to do with the fact that you're still getting used to the format. The AAMCs reveal weaknesses. So what you gotta do is hit those weaknesses relentlessly. Turn them into strengths. 10 days is still quite a bit of time.

Of course, that is all easier said than done.

Physics Self-Assessment: 84%

Reviewing these questions now... is it just me or are there more category 3 (hard) level questions than 1? Ha ridiculous. Keep truckin everyone. Almost there.

ahh I am worried. I been getting 8 and 9s on verbal...but I got a 10 on verbal on last year's MCAT. Has my verbal skills deteriorated? I really need a boost before i retake the MCAT this year. Anyone have a list of things to focus on while reading the verbal passages? I tend to do horribly when the passage is related to philosophy... I never understand anything when people talk in circles...😕 and when i don't understand something, I become very distracted...

I know its crunch time, but this may help you. I checked out a couple of intro philosophy books a couple months back from my local library and going through some of the basics, including how arguments are generally setup in the subject and classic cases that every first year phi course covers. This has helped me with the philosophy related passages as I can now actually understand the majority of the passage and get through it without being intimidated. Familiarizing myself with some of the more famous individuals in the field and their ideas/contributions has also helped with verbal. I recognize the name and then usually the passage recaps their ideas and adds new information.

I also have an ethics course under my belt from undergrad, but that was one semester well over 2 years ago.

Main thing is to not flip out when you get to one of these passages and remain calm as you read. And it might be where you map the passage or take side notes the most, and/or save it as your last passage.
Hope this helps, good luck!

Is there a benefit to doing a FL in parts? I think I could use the practice problems, and I won't end up going through all the AAMCs (but haven't bought them yet). I was planning to take a day off tomorrow and do two more, one Tuesday and one Friday, but I was thinking of doing AAMC 7 or 8 broken up tomorrow or tomorrow and Tuesday instead. Would I loose the benefit by having more than a 10 minute break between sections? Maybe an hour or two between them? Just the thought of 4 straight hours of test taking is wearing me down.

Ideally you should be taking it in as close to your testing position as possible. You shouldn't waste the AAMCs, the best practice you can possibly get, on improper practicing methods. But it also depends on how well you're scoring as compared to your ideal and/or minimum score; if you're doing well you may benefit from just doing what you suggested and destressing, but if you're not, you should definitely build your endurance more.

Is it just me or do you guys think our exam is going to be quite difficult because the AAMC knows that we are the last ones to take it this cycle?

Is anyone else having problems with e-mcat? I tried to take AAMC 10 last night, but I kept getting service unavailable/communications error notifications. I tried to access it just now and it's still not working 🙁

EDIT: HOLY MOLY I bombed the VR for AAMC 10. I've been scoring an avg of 12/13 on VR, but I got a 10 on this one--worst ever. The questions seemed pretty easy too...I have no idea what happened 🙁

I kind of thought the same thing but now I doubt it. They really don't if everyone has had the chance to study the whole summer since maybe people were doing summer courses or working full time so why would they make it more difficult. I don't think the test is meant to be more difficult on certain days than others and if it ends up being so, I believe the curve adjusts for that. Just my opinion though. I sure hope it isn't more difficult!

I couldn't access the AAMC tests this morning either. Kept getting the communications error notifications. Were you able to get it to work eventually without these pop-up messages? I found that clicking the "OK" button several times allows me to continue the test. Though I find this somewhat distracting.
