****The Official Buffalo Class of 2017 Acceptance Thread****

Interview 2/8...upper upper alternate...hopefully some seats open up in a couple months!

Interviewed 2-7-13, and placed as an alternate. I called Barbara and she said that I was upper 1/3 of the list (better than middle, bottom). I remain hopeful!!

I interviewed last year and was in the Upper Third as well. Just wanted to let you know that they accept less people off the waitlist like they used to since the number of applications have gone up and there is less overlap amongst waitlists. I didn't get off the waitlist and had a good number as well. Good luck.

Anyone else see this on the orientation page?

Expected Tuition Increases

Beginning in 2011, the State University of New York began a five year plan of annual tuition increases that affect all SUNY colleges and universities. Each year, the SUNY Board of Trustees must vote to approve the proposed increases; in 2012, that vote took place on June 12.

The annual anticipated tuition increases for the DDS program are expected to be in the 9-10% range. All incoming and continuing DDS students should plan their budgets accordingly.

Although tuition increases are never a welcome matter, the purpose of the increase is to keep SUNY schools competitive by using these resources to maintain and invest in the quality of your education program in the face of increasing university operating costs and declining state tax fund allocations for university programs. Dean Glick and the SDM faculty remain committed to providing you with the best dental education possible.

Kinda sucks. Although even after such large increases, it still ends up being cheaper than private schools, but damn. 10% increase per year?

I know this may be an unpopular opinion, but idk why they don't just make it tougher for OOS students to become residents. NY is one of a few states where it's cake to switch. Having a few students that had to pay OOS tuition would solve the same problem and wouldn't punish people who have been paying taxes all this time. Just my opinion.

They talked about how tution will keep on increasing at the interview, and that studetns should take it into consideration.

I think there will be a significant tuition hike annually no matter where we go

Sort of a downer, but factoring in a 10% tuition increase the total becomes 237,000ish versus the 221,000 that was originally on the budget sheet. This is assuming only a tuition increase without fees increasing. Overall, still not too bad. I'd assume private school tuition will increase over the next 4 years as well.

anyone know the best time to look for housing? I am planning to move into buffalo around July 1st. Also I keep hearing one street down is dangerous. Which side is it exactly? I am assuming south of the "south campus" on google maps????

Cometh May is when lease renewal/termination happens.

As for tuition rising on an annual basis, I got one advice for y'all: Ramen.

Hey guys, has anyone gotten off the wait list yet?
I haven't heard yet but I wouldn't expect many winter waitlisters to hear by this point. I think a couple spots will open up in April, but in my opinion it's still too soon to expect much movement 🙂

From what I have been reading on the forums, and from the people I've been talking to over the past few weeks, it does seem like there are people out there holding spots at Buffalo in addition to a seat somewhere else. I don't think every one of those people will choose Buffalo, and I do think we'll see additional movement off of the wait list. It seems like it hasn't moved much since the mid January timeframe. This is when I was accepted off the wait list, and I was thrilled and felt very fortunate. I do think there will be additional acceptances handed out, but I'm just not sure when. We just need some people out there to make up their minds first. Hang in there people!

I talked with Dr. Brown via email and he said April 1st and beyond is the important time frame (especially if your on the waitlist) because on Apris 1st, and every week thereafter, all schools are able to identify candidates who are holding multiple acceptances.
This is probably when we will see some movement for the waitlist

Does anyone know if Buffalo frowns upon letters of intent? I've been accepted else where, but really want to get off the wait-list at buff. Anyone have any thoughts?

Does anyone know if there is a second deposit required?

This is probably not likely but any1 knows if there're any consequences for accepting offer at Buffalo but attend else where later on? Im not sure if I should accept the offer on MyUB to get more info or just leave it at that.

you simply lose your deposit $. That's all. =) But you have to decide by april 1st on which school. You cannot hold multiple acceptances after that date.

so i applied to UB Mid-december, and most of my friends in my school got their acceptance letter during mid february, today is march 11th, i called UB on febraury 27 and they told me that in two weeks i will find out. Today again i called and they told me another two weeks. This is really stressful, does anyone know why there taking this long to decide on my application, and when do you guys think might hear back from them. Thank you

No the deadline was march 1st 2013.

"The deadline for receipt of applications and all supporting materials is December 1."

I got the call as well! IS for UB. Good luck everyone!!

Congratulations! Were you in the "upper upper 1/3" (according to Barbara) or just "upper 1/3"? Thanks, just trying to determine my chances of getting off the waitlist.

Upper upper. And it looks like BDental was as well. They are giving us 2 weeks until the 28th to decide so maybe more news then!

Thanks for letting me know. I'm only "upper 1/3" so I'm not very confident but still keeping my fingers crossed for April. Congratulations, again!

Haha I was not aware of an "upper upper" 1/3.

jlf1042, will you be accepting the offer and attending UB? Congrats by the way!

I am turning down NYU for financial reasons, so I am keeping my fingers crossed and praying that I'll get into UB!! It's good to hear the waitlist is moving a little bit! 👍

I currently have a deposit down at another school, but will probably be turning it down for UB. Not 100% sure yet, but I'll be sure to post! Best of luck to you, I hope you hear good news soon!! :xf:

Look for housing any time between now and orientation. Some apartment complexes won't want to talk to you yet if you're not looking to move in until July, but still worth looking now. Also check the housing forum on the orientation website to see postings from students who own houses/condos/apartments and are looking to rent them out (such as myself lol)

Yes.... anything SOUTH, especially south west of the school is generally less safe. If you're looking at google maps, the school is at the corner of Main & Bailey. North across Main St you're in Amherst (right across from the dental school, becomes Buffalo if you keep driving down Main) -- and are typically in a safer neighborhood. Also, east of Eggert Rd is Cheektowaga, where a lot of families are (and a lot of dental students buy houses here), also pretty safe. Between Eggert and Main street south of the school, I personally would not recommend -- housing is available and super cheap there but you don't want to be outside in the dark, and as a dental student you will have many nights coming home late from lab in the dark. Kenmore is a section of Tonawanda that is also very safe, Kenmore and Tonawanda are located north west of the school. Towns of: Kenmore, Tonawanda (Town, not City -- City is kinda far), Amherst, Cheektowaga are your best bets. Also some people live in down town Buffalo, areas like Elmwood and Allentown, and these people seem pretty happy although housing is sometimes actually more expensive because that's the price you pay for living 'where the action' is 🙂

I just got an apartment on the border of allentown and elmwood village. About a 10-15 minute commute to school, but yes, it is in the middle of all the "action". Figured it would give me some variety when/if downtime did come into play.

Hi guys, I gave up my seat at Buffalo today. Buffalo is a fantastic school and it was an extremely tough decision. Best of luck to those of you on the waitlist 🙂

Just curious, would you mind telling us what school you chose instead?
