The Official Jan. 24 2013 MCAT Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Long time lurker, first time poster. I've actually been out of the country for the past 2 weeks so I haven't been thinking of the MCAT much thankfully. I took the 8a Jan 24 exam and am starting to freak out a little. This was my second time taking the test...I did well on the sciences the first time but got a 6 in verbal. I got an 11 on physical sciences the first time around and am pissed because now I think I raised my verbal but dropped PS thanks to this test. I know its been a month since the exam and im a little late in asking but for anyone who still remembers the exam....what did you all think of the PS section? Without discussing the specifics of course.. I thought it was kind of brutal... There was very little chemistry and the physics just seemed way more indepth and conceptual than the AAMC. Any other thoughts? Good luck guys, almost there!

AGREEEEEE 100% i was looking at the screen like really.... smh that was brutal!!! tooo Brutal!!!!👎scared:😡😡

No need to be rude. I only shared my major b/c I think I'm one of the few people who would actually prefer to take the 2015 MCAT.

wow, touchy. I'll blame the internet on coming off as rude, but it was 1, a genuine compliment on getting 75% correct, and 2, a joke since everyone was sharing their scores and stats.

Yeah, sorry for the misinterpretation, I thought you were being sarcastic! Clearly the wait has made me a bit high strung 😳

hey guys, Im planning to take my MCAT on 4/26/13 and I just had a couple of questions regarding the MCAT...

was the mcat more conceptual based or calculation heavy?
was there more organic or bio in the BS ? more physics or chem on the PS?

Im just trying to see what i should focus on more.

I promise this isn't meant to be rude but there is no way that anyone's answer is going be of much value. This was my second time and the first exam was very chemistry/calculation heavy. This time around, it was almost all physics and very conceptual. My first exam had 3 Orgo passes and this one had 1. My best advice, know everything!!! Good luck

Just wanted to add that I find an easy way to find doctors to shadow.

I notice that my county medical club--Palm Beach County Medical Society had a mentee/mentor program. You guys should check your county if something similar exist.

I actually do think you had to have put in an honest effort, on the aamc website it says "You will also receive the following if you put forth a good-faith effort:" and goes on to list the gift card and the feedback, so maybe if you breezed through them and didnt do so hot they would take that as a sign you were just clicking through it. Though I have no idea.

Well if that is the case, then it is complete BS. Nowhere when we originally signed up for the MCAT did it say anything about "a good-faith effort" being the indicator of whether we received the gift card or not. Now the AAMC has thrown that in now that everyone has taken the trial section. It's just a way for the AAMC to cover themselves and not have to shell out $30 to every person. I will be calling them on Monday and complaining because this is unacceptable.

So guys, the magic number according to previous years thread is 12:12pm PST (3:12pm EST). Do you think that will be the case for this year also?

I have the such a bad headache right now.

I am hoping I did great, I really do not think I have it in me to study for the MCAT again.

Only abt 48 hrs. and our so call life will change.

I looked through previous threads and it's usually anywhere between 12 & 2pm (PST). Good thing I have lab during that time or else I would be checking constantly.

75% on the trial section, top 25 percentile too! I guess that's what happens when you major in the social sciences lol.

Speaking of trial section percentiles. :nono: Didn't we all get sets of questions/paragraphs of varying difficulty? The percentages reported are for that particular set, no? Not to burst or inflate anyone's bubble but aren't the percentiles meaningless for the trial section? So, 90% on a set of easy questions is not comparable to 50% on hard ones? Or am I completely off base?

The trial section was selected based on what coursework you had already taken (hence why they gave you that survey at the beginning).

As for difficulty, it's all relative. The biochemistry section would be purportedly tougher for a psychology or sociology major who had never taken biochem before, and those who majored in the hard sciences with very little liberal arts education would have more difficulty with psych/sociology. I am pretty sure the passages and FSQ's included were tailored to what boxes we checked off when registering for the test.

The trial section percentiles could be subjective however when they rank you meaning either saying your above average, what percentile ect. based on other people who had the same questions as you.

Just discovered this website tonight as all I can think about these past few days is MCAT.

I need a 24 with at least 8 on each section, hoping I get it and won't have to re-test in April.

Wish I could give more insight into how I felt test day, but I've forgotten over the past few weeks.

So nervous! I don't want to study for this ever again! 🙁

Feeling the same except I will not retest in April, I have not determine when to retest, probably next year after I go back to school and take some more classes.

ONE MORE DAY!!!!!! omg im freaking out i hope and pray i got a 30 or above. I dont really want to retake the MCAT. I hope everyone gets the score they hoped they achieved i no i do!!!:naughty::naughty::naughty:

Freaking out right now! Only one more day...

However, I have so much other stuff going on this week that I am tempted to not look until after Thursday but I don't think that that is realistically going to happen

Anyone else just terrified to look

Not quite terrified, but more numb to it at this point. I'm sure I won't be frantically checking the site tomorrow. If I happen to think about it, I'll check it, but I'm not dying to know. I just don't think I can mentally handle having to study for this thing again.

I am the same way. It has gotten to the point for me where I have unfortunately accepted defeat, and I am preparing to retake. I think once you accept you have done poorly, the whole thing doesn't seem as bad anymore. Then again, I really don't know my scores, so there is that little bit of optimism involved, but not enough to make me confident.

I'm anxious to get my score. I really don't want to retake and California has the mcat spots all taken up till May.

I know exactly how you feel it was just so mentally and physically draining. Plus, it killed my winter break and I just don't think I can survive losing my summer break or what little spare time I have during the year

Same here. I still feel like I have no fully recovered from studying . I am just hoping and praying for at least a 25 with no subsection lower than a 7.

Just a little over 24 hours everyone! Ugh... the wait seems so pointless...

Felt better about the MCAT this time than the last time I took it. Not sure if it's because of the extra studying or making sure I did the pre-MCAT routine correctly (got lots of sleep, ate breakfast, etc).

So what are you guys thinking about MCAT retake dates?

1) Late March --- only about a month to prepare, but you still have some knowledge left in your brain from the 1/24/13 original test date. It will be hard to push yourself to get back into the studying mode

2) Early May --- more time to prepare and mentally get back into the whole testing mode, but, unless you have been reviewing every day, most of what you had down cold in January, has been forgotten. More time to get back into full-on studying mode, but also easier to just keep putting off studying.

or,

3) A time during April --- a mix of 1 and 2

This is what I'm debating and I just can't decide.

Well, that's right after finals. Why isn't anyone considering June or July? I think if you need to retake some serious self reflection needs to take place because obviously you can't expect to study the same way and have a different outcome...

So I decided tomorrow I will be cleaning the entire house to keep me occupy I need to study for my CNA state exam but I cant focus.

Then I will be going to a Starbucks I never been to to check my scores, I do not want to check my scores in s familiar place, just in case they are bad. I also will be using s folder to cover the screen I dont think I can handle seeing my score at once. I want to see the percentage first then total then subsection scores.

Then I will call my family and friends to tell them how I did hoping it will be well.

Then I will go to the gym for a walk , hopefully I will walking my joy off and not my sorrow.

God, this is so stressful. The only way I can calm down is by remembering that whatever I find out tomorrow, it's already done. Worst case scenario: retake. Best case: don't retake. It's pretty simple when you think about it....

If I do have to retake, I'm waiting until June. That way, I'll have a solid 7 weeks to prepare after the spring semester. But jeez....I hope I don't.

Thinking good thoughts for everyone! Best of luck!

I would go as far as June/July. If a retake is needed, my scores would hopefully be decent enough to send out anyways and update the scores later on. MCAT isn't a test worth just jumping back into and unless you've been hardcore studying since right after the test, I would discourage anyone from retaking it March or even April, definitely May the earliest if you're starting up now a new.

So I started cleaning my kitchen at like 6 am this morning.
I am semi done... I needed to take a break.
I will get back on it at 11 am.
Then after cleaning the kitchen I will cook dinner.
Then I relax until I have to pick up my cousin at 3:15 pm
Then I will wander in the mall.
Then drive to a Starbucks by my gym that I never go into to check my test scores at 5 pm.
Then I will call my family and friends.
Then I will go to the gym, hoping to walk off my joy.

Are you able/willing to share your flash cards? 😳

AAMC Average: 32
AAMC Average for 9-11: 33 (10,12,11)
AAMC Range: 27 - 34 (31-34 Excluding Diagnostic)
Goal: 31 (10/11/10)
Post Bac Requirement: 27 (with at least an 8 in each section)
Prediction: 26-28

Immediately when I walked out I felt terrible about it, but I am slowly feeling a little better. PS difficulty was similar to the AAMCs, but it seemed to be heavy in some subjects I feel weaker in. Verbal started off strong, but I screwed up my time management and did not leave myself much time to review at the end. Bio was rough. I am only 3 weeks into Orgo II and I felt it. Outside of Orgo, there were two Bio passages I felt moderately uncomfortable with as well. The Bio difficulty really reminded me of AAMC 11. I feel like I might be counting on verbal to carry my score. Good luck to everybody on their scores.

Real Deal: 30 (10/10/10)

I did better than I thought in Bio, but I was a little disappointed in my verbal score. Oh well, it was enough for my assured admission in the Fall. I hope everyone else is getting good news!
