Hi Everyone,

I'm another Jefferson hopeful. Just got waitlisted in the high-priority category. I really enjoyed my visit their and hopefully I will see some of you this coming August.

For all of you out there. I was looking at their website and it appears that classes have always started later than August 4 for incoming... I called today. They do indeed start on August 4. August 4-8 is orientation, and August 11th is the first day of the teaching block....

I'd say Tufts, BU, and Maryland. However, my best guess as a student at one of these schools is that Tufts and BU both seem to have more clout with residency programs in New England, and UMAB residency programs seem to take a lot of grads from Maryland med. I think both UMDNJ schools and SUNY Stonybrook are ranked slightly lower than Jeff, but not sure..

I'm a MS1 at Jeff, and it is true that next year is the first time that 1st year is starting so early (we still start second year at the end of august). It is so that you have a longer summer next summer. This year we don't get out until June 20 (we just started Neuro yesterday), next year you will get out in late May, I believe. Mostly it is because people were having trouble finding jobs after 1st year because it ended so late.
 
I thought I didn't get the matriculant email either....but it turns out it was sent to my Jeff address. Oddly enough - even though I could potentially bail on Jeff (not gonna happen), the assigned school email is fully functional!

2 Questions for ya'll - current students especially....all input welcome :D

1 - anyone have any thoughts on using a laptop on Jeff grounds vs the computer labs? I'm living off-campus and am deciding btwn a laptop/desktop. Question is - would I really use the laptop to study with in the library/study rms/etc - or is it not worth the extra expense and I should just get a really spiffy desktop to use at home?

2 - anyone know if there's a diff btwn the way women's and men's white coats are cut? We can submit a size for either one - but they say that the men's are 'unisex'. Does that mean that the women's are more tailored or something? I can figure out the size I need based on the lab coats at work - but don't know if it's a huge diff to just get the men's coat vs. the chica's version. I thought they were all the same...anyone know anything about this??

It seems to me that the only difference between the women's and men's lab coats are the sleeve lengths (and they might be a little longer in the body). I have really long arms and have always worn a men's size. The men's might be cut a little roomier too, but I'm not sure. Probably the best thing to do is to try on some coats at work and get the size that fits best (the women's coats aren't slightly pinker or anything ;) ).

Someone else on here can probably answer the computer question better than I can. For me, having a desktop and living off campus have worked out quite nicely.
 
not sure, i think the women's coats may also have a half-sash to narrow the back. Maybe email [email protected]
 
Has anyone seen a match list for this year?
 
I just checked my Yahoo email account, which I almost never use. There was an email dayed May 7 from Jefferson saying I had to mail a deposit postmarked by May 15 (today) or lose my spot. The post office closed in 2 hours!

Funny the've been sending me all sorts of stuff by snail mail, but not this critical information. I figure they would at least copy it to my Jefferson email account.

I recently got something about all the frats (not interested) by snailmail, and an email to my Jefferson account about other things we need to do prior to matriculating.

I decided to go with a laptop in order to take advantage of Jefferson being wireless campus. I like the idea of working ANYWHERE on campus on my computer and not being restricted to the computer lab. But just my 2cents.

Dr. Callahan called me yesterday morning to let me know that I'd received an acceptance. I've been on the waitlist since my interview in February.

I wrote a letter to Dr. Callahan about a month ago. Also, I've been calling every 3-4 weeks to express interest.

Judging from last year's movement,

, Jefferson's list does not move a lot (only 2 students posted after May 15). I'm not sure how much you can trust a waitlist movement thread though... maybe no-one from the Jeff thread last year was posting acceptances to the waitlist thread.

Jeff does have a large number of matriculants to spots offered (almost 50%) which is not encouraging to waitlisters. That said, WL activity at most schools varies greatly year to year and it's too early to say what will happen at Jeff. So keep the faith!

Nah! I think Jeff's waitlist moves quite a bit. I can't tell you how many people in my class came off it, but I run into them all the time. It's still early yet. Don't lose hope! Remember, other lists are starting to move so people will start shifting where they will go as they get acceptances elsewhere.

They are sort of horrendous, aren't they? Maybe I should have done this as an attachment. I find the Hospital one useful though cause you can notice things like people are much more likely to end up at residencies in the mid-Atlantic region rather than New England or California etc.

Housing office said we should hear this month or next month about our housing assignments. I should hope so!

Lab work is so slow lately... Leaving June 16 for rainy Thailand... I can't wait for school to start!

JLazyMD - thanks for the match list....despite the 'list pollution' ;) Is your trip guaranteed SARS free? :p I actually saw an ad in a European paper that promoted a 100% SARS free vacation in Thailand - or else you get $100,000 :rolleyes: Enjoy your trip - I've made plans to go to Thailand for the past 5 yrs, but haven't quite made it yet...


Can't wait to leave the lab....everytime I have to deal with the yahoos here I just chant in my head "six more weeks....only six more weeks...." I didn't even think about having to get a school physical - glad they sent it out now, before my insurance runs out!
 
Question for all those w/Stafford loans...ok - for everyone...

Anyone have any thoughts or insight between MedCap vs. T.H.E. loans? I was trying to find out if one has better 'perks' than the other (i.e. % back w/auto pay or multiple on-time payments) but haven't really found much yet. Anyone know if one is any better than the other? Or should I just close my eyes and pick one? Thanks!!
 
hey i actually just got off the phone with the financial aid office. they recommended the T.H.E. lender. I can't really see much difference b/w the lenders so i think thats the way im gonna go

hmm, welll, just to warn you, if will be living close to jefferson's campus, you might pay up ~200 bucks a month to park it in a private parking lot. i remember hearing at interview day getting a pass at jefferson's student/faculty lot is about as easy as winning the lottery, and parking on the street really isnt much of an option in center city ;)
 
I remember at my interview, there was a lot that was free, however, it was a 15 minute walk, and was in a "sketchy" area. Our host told us he never had a problem with it being broken into or anything, but it is in a not so nice area. It is free though.
 
i think im gonna be bringing a car...although i dont know how much im going to be using it...it will be helpful on those days i want to get out of philly though....parking is a little steep but nowhere what im used to up here in boston...it'll be a little refreshing...
 
A car in the city shouldn't be too bad - especially if you plan on parking it somewhere for weeks at a time. It would be pricey to pay for a spot near school - but if you can afford it, it's worth it. As for street parking - you can go a good ways out from the school before you hit anything truely sketchy. Residency stickers allow you to park on a lot of blocks for free (including meter streets). West and south of Jeff have several areas with relatively plentiful safe parking within a 15 min walk. Don't be detered from brining your car if you think you'll use it - it can be very easily dealt with. If you don't need it tho' , leave it at home - don't give yourself more to worry about than MS1 ;)
 
Its definitely going to be pricey. I think for years 1&2 it will probably be just collecting dust for the most part. (*I guess I wont have to worry about paying too much for gas). But I think the few times I'd want it will be greatly appreciated.

Yup. Got my housing...goooo Barringer! I have yet to know who my roomie is tho. Also, they said I can't move in until Aug 2 due to renovation.
 
cc says that jeff has about 6 more acceptances out than spots available-not likely to give out any more until some more people give up spots. grrr!

There's a lot. Ill be in the Ben Franklin House . REAL close to campus and the staff seems pretty cool.
