Hi I am looking for a place to live in NY. If there's still anyone looking for a roomate ( I don't mind living with 2,3 other students), please PM me

I am also surprised because people with lower stats than I have got in.....

I have a 3.3 GPA
DAT:

Sci: 23
Org: 18
Chem: 19
RC: 18
PAT: 22
QR: 15:shrug: (panicked on this section as you can see lol)

I wonder why they haven't contacted me yet...?
how is your "sci" 23? did you mean bio:23 ?

Idk. I got the e-mail about the waitlist close. My stats are GPA: 3.3, sGPA:3.43 AA:21 TS:21. Volunteer hours - 300 hours (at the time of applying)

I am pretty sure they aren't just basing this on marks. I just wished they would tell us why they close it off to specific students, when there are other applicants with the same stats.

I might call her tomorrow and ask her how come I got the e-mail.

Yea at first I thought it based on DAT mostly, but i see people with low scores get in and people with high scores get rejected. I dont know what its based off of.

I'm scared now! My gpa is around yours and I have a 20ts/aa. I reapplied for the 2020 cycle but it would still be heartbreaking to get that email!

Seriously! :( I feel for you guys. But at least you know where you stand and can begin planning from here? As far as I know I'm still on the wait list but was hoping to submit my 2016 app tomorrow. At least I know what I'm doing this time. I was going in virtually blind last cycle.

I am a non-traditional applicant and I didn't do so well when I graduated from college a handful of years ago, I had a 3.0 with two business majors
I recently went back to school and raised my GPA to a 3.3 and had an overall science GPA of 3.4 (closer to a 3.5 with my most recent semester just completed)

20 AA / 19 TS / 18 PAT :( I know the stats aren't eye popping

150 observation hours
5+ years full-time work experience

You?

I believe you're PAT score is the killer here - my opinion, it should be above a 20 minimum. the rest of the stats were comparable to mine except I had, 21 on PAT and over 2,000 hrs shadowing (yeah i'm a little nuts about dentistry lmao). I have friends that changed careers and were in your boat. i'm sorry about this cycle, but you got this next time!!!

I know it's frustrating and it's confusing, but things are not always so black and white. I'm not talking about you specifically here but they take interviews seriously into consideration - so if ppl are posting that they didn't get in with crazy good DAT/GPA, it doesn't mean anything if they are a robot, have no emotion, no true passion for dentistry, come off arrogant, are not personable, and/or are really bad at interviewing (nobody want to have a heartless dentist). And then there are people who scored a little lower (like me, not unreasonably low, just not stellar) but i made it perfectly clear that i wouldn't see myself in any other career aside from having my hands chopped off and i really really really wanted to go to NYUCD and i showed that to them. sometimes they just look for will-power, because yeah I didn't have amazing scores going in, and chances were that I wasn't going to get amazing scores in dental school (which is what exactly happened), but they want to know that in the worst days in dental school, you still wouldn't want to be elsewhere - so they give the benefit of the doubt to the person who might not be amazing on paper. During my interview Dr. Mejia said that they look for people who genuinely WANT to go to nyucd, not just to get into another school to have "options" where to go to dental school or nyucd is the only option so you're settling. Once again, I'm not saying this is you or that this is what happened to you!! - just sort of a general thing that the whole process of getting into dental school is really nonlogical.
I'm really really sorry you didn't get in this year - and the only advice i can give you is that there is no "formula" to getting into dental school. it doesn't make sense. and it doesn't seem fair. and i felt the same each time i got rejected from the other dental schools. but reapplying does put you priority to those applying for the first time next cycle. and reapplying shows dental schools that you're still very committed to dentistry -and that's a good thing. best of luck!

Hey, were you able to get a hold of admissions? What did they say about the waitlist close?

I didn't get it.... I think that's a good thing.

Also, the Facebook page has continued to grow somewhat steadily since mid-May (this week included)....

I emailed admissions and they said waitlist will continue to move... So I'm assuming it's a good sign if we didn't get the email....yet lol

That's a temporary relief; thanks for sharing the info

I think its a good thing, they are starting to filter people off of the waitlist and are beginning to cap off the class. I believe the class size is around 350....? So i guess the rat races have started lol

When I had my interview I believe she said it was going to be around 380 this year

The NYUCD FAQ portion of the website says 360....

When I asked the student tour guide about this, he said it's 390, but then it becomes 360 "after people drop out"....

*shrugs*

I could most definitely be wrong! But either way hopefully for us wait listers there will be more seats opening up :)

UB mentioned to us during our interview that they pulled someone off the waitlist last year, less than a week before school started.

So its not over until its over.

Hello fellow students, I have a quick question about paying the tuition.

I'm an international, from Canada, got accepted late April. However, I never received any 'financial aid package' or any instruction on how I should make a payment to the school.

Does anybody have an idea when I would get it? or is there any chance that I missed my package? I received my 'welcome to NYUCD UPS package.'

Many of the most recent class of 2019 additions to the Facebook page(s) have been international or Cali students.... If they've truly been generally taking people from far away so they may get situated, then maybe they will soon begin taking those from "closer" to NYC....

from my understanding canadians don't get financial aid packages

Ahh congrats!! I hope they're still making calls

Anyone gone into NYU Albert and accept their student loans yet? Having trouble getting through to financial aid office and was wondering when these loans are disbursed? The financial aid "budget" online is broken up into fall 2015 and spring 2016. Do we receive the loans per year or per semester? I have put together a budget (already signed a lease etc) but confused on when I will get the $ deposited in my account

p.s. Am I the only one freaking out about this potential $400k debt?? I'll be saving where I can, but I feel like the monthly repayments are going to be debilitating. Even getting super aggressive with repayment right out of school will mean attacking this debt for ~ 10 yrs with every penny of your after tax income. Basically living off of a spouse's income for ten years. I refuse to make $2,000 payments every month for 30 years!! Let me know I'm not alone so that I can get some sleep at night. Anxiety thru the roof. Regardless, I'll see ya'll in August

I did accept my loans but the first half of our loans for 2015-2016 are not disbursed until early September and have to last until January. The second half is disbursed in January and needs to last you until June, then I think from there our loans start getting disbursed every June and January. You should double check with Financial Aid just to be sure!

Also I recently met with an NYUCD alumni from '99 for a few hours, he alleviated any concerns I had about repayment lol

Accepted today 10:30AM

Hey congrats!!! I was just wondering, how many times did you email Dr. Mejia/admissions? I did it quite a few times but I don't want to be annoying. So would you suggest to just wait at this point or continue to keep in touch? Thanks!

Nope. The January disbursement should cover your rent and bills that are due in the beginning of July as well, cause summer disbursement is in mid-July. Last year I got mine July 16th. Haven't gotten a disbursement for this summer yet, but I'm assuming it's coming next week or the week after.

Cool! Thanks a bunch. Dang I was hoping to be able to pay September rent with loans.. But I guess not!! That's good to know tho. Did you give he/she the new tuition cost & interest rates? My sister is a dentist and keeps telling me I'll be fine but she graduated in the late 90s from a state school. Not sure she sees my perspective. She does very well but she had the option to hold on to student loans because her interest rate is basically nonexistent. Able to buy a practice sooner, make more sooner and for longer etc. NYU will be four times what she paid at twice the interest rate! Our student loans will be too costly to hang on to! IMO anyway But I guess if 380 other people do it every year, it can be done

my rant to those who didn't get in this cycle:

there is no formula for getting into dental school, which is very true. NYU is run like a business, more than any other dental school, simply due to the size. they accept people based off of their abilities to be able to take a test (pass the boards), and their willingness to pay the insane cost of attending NYU. bottom line, which is unfortunate: they accept people with the realization that 10-15 students a year won't make the cut moving forward. it is what it is. they accept you, take your money, and if you don't make it then they tell you to remediate, even if you're short of passing by .5%. i know of people who have had to repeat a whole school year because of missing 1 question on a remedial exam. repeating a year means another 80k that the school will get in tuition, should the student decide to repeat a year...which is most often the case. you're already so financially invested in dental school that you probably have no choice but to repeat and continue.

i know of people who didn't get in with 25s on the DAT, where as i know people who got in with 19s on their DAT. what's the logic? a person with a 25 on the DAT isn't very likely to pay the $$ for NYU, because they've either gotten into a better school, or a cheaper school. the person with lower scores is more likely to be a sure seat that they can fill for the class. also consider the fact that someone else mentioned up here...if you're close to new york city, and are competing for a spot you're probably more likely to get it.

i'm seriously just playing devil's advocate here. my experience at NYU has been pretty standard, and I wouldn't change it for the world. i'm proud to be at a great institution, but at the same time, i'm not blindly denying the faults of my school. if you didn't get into NYU this cycle, sure you put your professional career on hold, but that just means you have the opportunity to improve your resume and get into cheaper schools for the next cycle. even if you're a year behind academically at that point, you'll still be ahead financially. always think 'long term'. good luck.

I called and emailed like 6-7 times. I think you should continue to show interest every 2 weeks or so. I thought calling them would be annoying and awkward since the conversation will be the same every time; email is better.

Ahh, I guess I'll call again tomorrow. I just never really know what to say. What do you guys think my chances are seeing as I'm from CA?

(I know they prefer students that are closer at this point in the cycle, but I'm hoping I still have a chance seeing as I didn't get the waitlist closed email?)

I thought it was early-mid August for the first disbursement since D1 is only 10 months long (August thru May).
