The Official UC Irvine Countdown Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
This may be true or not, has anyone else heard this? Someone told me the other day that UCI last year accepted everyone off their waitlist. Does anyone know if UCI has changed the policy of their waitlist so that they will not be doing accepting the vast majority of their waitlist or if it is still the same? Anyone will the insider info? :D

That isn't true at all.

There were less than 20..possibly 13 people left on the alternate list at UCI last year around July. It is very possible that all of them got in...very. That's all I'm going to say or should say.

As for this year, how far the wait list moves is extremely difficult to say. It varies year to year.

Where did you get that info from (just curious)? I really don't think they take THAT many people from the waitlist. Although, they do take A LOT of people from the waitlist.

Is anyone planning on doing the pre-entry summer program? If so, have you already received housing? I got housing in Verano Place, but I can't move in until July 10th...do you have any ideas as to where I can stay/what I should do for the first 10 days of the summer program?
Thanks. :D

20 people on the alternate list in July!!
So, I guess there will be a big screening process to reject about 200 alternatee soon at UCI. :( :( :(
If any not in this list of death pretty much gets accepted?

Hey Aria,
you can stay with me. :D :D :D

According to "US News & World Report," there was a total of 3,507 (3,117 In-State/390 Out-of-State) applicants for the 2001 Entering Class. Among these applicants, exactly 411 (406 In-State/5 Out-of-State) were selected for an interview and a total of 220 (220 In-State/0 Out-of-State) were eventually offered an acceptance. The total enrollment last year was 94.

I do not want to pass judgement on these figures; however, it seems that more than 50% of those who interviewed last year were eventually accepted. I think the predicament for those on the "Alternate List" is not so bad. Good luck to all those who are waiting!

thanks california, you've given me a little hope to hold on too..

Yes, I'm doing the pre-entry program. That really is horrible that your move in day is July 10th! What were they thinking?? Anyways, call up your room mate and see when the current resident is actually moving out. My move-in day is July 1st, but it turns out the old room mate is really leaving June 17th. There may be some time for cleaning though. Oh and I too called Eileen yesterday and can confirm the program runs from July 1st to July 31st! We get August (or at least most of it) off!

Although I am not on "Hold," I am curious to know whether all who were placed in this category have heard additional information about their status? I guess this question is directed towards El Jefe and others. In others words, have you now been added to the "Alternate List"? Have you been accepted? I can't imagine anyone still on "Hold." In my humble opinion, you should have a definitive answer as to whether you are going to be accepted or placed on the "Alternate List"!

Nope I still am on hold. Haven't heard a peep from UCI since January. What makes you think that everyone should have heard by now about the alternate list? I'm assuming they will still be holding off on looking at some of us holdees until June like we were originally told. It would be nice if they could let us know sooner though. All this waiting is making me numb.

Thanks, California. i'm wondering if you have the statistics for UCDavis too. If you do, can you post it in the UCD countdown thread? Anyways, did you interview at UCDavis also?
El jefe, you should contact the admissions office to look into your status.(if you're interested). When I called them earlier this week to investigate the mysterious calls, I talked to the frontdesk lady, she checked my AMCAS ID, and said I was still "on hold", while i received the alternate list e-mail about 5-6 days beforehand.

Aria111, I am taking the summer program and I got a place in Palo Verde. I am moving in June 14. What you could do is ask for temporary housing in a dorm. You could always just get a hotel room for 10 days or so. Where do you live now?

Call up Eileen and see what she can do. Haha, worst comes to worst, I'll let you sleep on my couch!

Wow! You were lucky to get into Palo Verde. I hear that is much newer than the Verano Place housing. Still, we're all lucky to have housing. The rates around the campus are horrendous.

Thanks, UC-Lover and Kazzar- you guys are the bawmb diggities :D ! I have a cousin who lives in costa mesa- i'm hoping i might stay with him for the first 10 days of the program...otherwise, i may take you guys up on your offers  ...either way, i'm looking forward to meeting and getting to know you both- we're gonna be friends for many years :p !

Bumping for Bamboozeled  .

thank you <img border="0" alt="[Lovey]" title="" src="graemlins/lovey.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[Lovey]" title="" src="graemlins/lovey.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[Lovey]" title="" src="graemlins/lovey.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[Lovey]" title="" src="graemlins/lovey.gif" />

aria, kazzar and none...I pmed u guys..please respond :D

Have any of you read about the history of UCI? It's ancient and born as an allopathic school out of that attempt in California to get rid of the DOs. I was really surprised. It's not bad, just really kinda interesting. They definitely didn't discuss any history during the interviews.

Is there anyone that is still on hold? Based on a brief conversation I had with the admisssions office, they said that not everyone makes the alternate list and many are still on hold. The admissions person gave me the impression its better to be on the alternate list than on hold at this point. Also, I was informed that the waitlist has not been fully compiled yet and that this should be done by the first week of June.

Thanks for the info nray!

Is anyone else besides Aria, none, and myself doing the summer pre-mat program? I'd like to see who else from SDN will be or is considering doing it. :)

Oops, sorry I missed you earlier Kazzar...looking forward to meeting all of you guys!

Dr. Happy and McEntrye are also gonna be in the pre-matriculation program.

Where are all of you living? I know Dr. Happy got a place in Verano Place and I think McEntrye got a place in Palo Verde. I am living in 3107 Palo Verde myself. You guys better come visit!

Everyone on the waitlist give up or has everyone but me been accepted off the alternate list? :p

Anyone gonna call tomorrow to see their position on the alternate list? Don't they start rejecting ppl now? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />

Okay, now that we've determined who is doing the pre-entry program...where are all of you getting your books?

I got a call earlier this week stating that I was being accepted off the alternate list. I think this was on 5/30. I was just about to draft a withdrawal notice. Anyhow, seems like there is some movement starting to occur. Good luck to all.

I got all of my books from BarnesandNoble.com. I was gonna go with Amazon.com, but the books were a bit more expensive on there. Both places offere free shipping and both were out of stock 1 of the required books.

The total cost was $200, not bad for 4 medical texts...

In case anybody was wondering what books they asked us to buy, they were:

Human Gross Anatomy by Leonard
Grant's Dissector by Sauerland
Atlas of Human Anatomy by Netter
Clinical Anatomy by Moore and Dalley

Kazzar where's the biochemistry book list? Isn't the summer program covering medical anatomy and biochemistry?

Hey souljah1,
when was your interview and when did you get notified o being tossed into the alternate list?
Are you gonna matriculate at UCSF? GRACIAS MUCHOS. :D

Biochemistry books aren't required for the summer. They're giving us notes. We're using Stryer's Biochemistry in the fall though. Also, the Moore and Dalley Clinical Anatomy book isn't required for the summer, but it is in the fall. I ended up buying from ecampus.com. I've read a lot of bad things about them, but they were sooooo cheap. I ended up paying $109.99 (no tax or shipping costs) for Human Gross Anatomy used, Grant's Dissector used, and Atlas of Human Anatomy new. We'll see the quality of the used books and if I actually ever receive the order... I'm just hoping I don't get what I paid for.

I interviewed on Feb.1st. I flew in from the east coast and asked if they could coordinate an interview with my other interview up in SF. They agreed, but said I'd be interviewing on my own. I wasn't sure what they meant, but when I got down there I learned that they usually have a large number of applicants interviewing when they have interview days. I was the only one, so I missed out on the activities and a group tour. I called Gayle at some point in April to check my appl. status and it was then that she informed me that I was going to be placed on the alternate list. And then last week they telephoned at 11:something eastern time. I was on vacation so someone else took the call.

Yeah, I am definitely going to matriculate at ucsf. I like the Bay Area (hiking, rock climbing, food) and have a good deal of friends there. I don't know a soul in orange county and didn't feel too keen on commuting to the hospital (I don't like needing a car). So, UCSF it is. I thought Irvine's campus was really nice and the students kicked ass. They were really responsive, but relaxed. They seemed very comfortable. Any UC is a great school, IMHO.

If you are waiting to hear from any of the UC schools off the waitlist, this is the month to be on edge. I've heard most of the movement is in June. I wish you the best of luck!! To all those headed to Irvine, you rock!!

•Okay, now that we've determined who is doing the pre-entry program...where are all of you getting your books?•••••Hi,

I am also doing the pre-entry program, as Kazzar mentioned above.

In terms of books, I would be careful before you spend lots of money on brand-spankin' new books. My future roomate, whom I met last weekend, is a fourth year med student. He said not to buy any books until I get there because a) i don't know what I need and b) there is a used book sale at the begining of the year when the upper year students sell off the books you will need.

If you really want to buy them ahead of time, try ebay. Dr. Happy's mom found a bunch of them for around 10-20 bucks each, second hand.

See you guys in july!

p.s. I actually ended up getting housing in Verano, mainly because it is 130 bucks a month cheaper and the apt is bigger. Cooler scene also(i.e. more community)

I have called UCI for status checks the past few months, and I was always told that in June they would let us know whether we are on the top or the bottom half of the waitlist. I called today inquiring about where I stand and they tell me they don't distinguish or rank students in that manner. What's the deal here? Can anyone give me more specifics on their process?

Well I called UCI to find out my status since I haven't heard anything since being told I was on hold back in January. They told me that I have been moved to the alternate list, "in the lower half" (sounds familiar... if you followed the UCSD thread :(). Anyway, they apparently didn't tell you the whole truth nray - there's obviously some kind of ranking in play right now. She wouldn't tell me how many people are on the alternate list (though this number is established). And she said that among the halves there is no numerical ranking; they try to use subjective criteria to pull people off the waitlist. So anyone on the top half could be pulled at any time. (At least that's the impression I got from her.)

After telling me this, the lady asked if I had any acceptances. I told her yes, and she wanted to know when classes started for that school. She then reminded me that I would not be able to hold a position on the waitlist after starting there. I said that I knew that, and she told me that I should try calling back in 3 or 4 weeks. I thought that was kind of weird since the office people (sounded like Gayle, but not really sure) usually aren't so concerned about my current matriculation plans. And I'm not really sure why she wants me to call back if I'm at the bottom of the waitlist (how much could it move in 3 weeks?). Eh, whatever. I think I'm almost out of the UC game.

Does this mean once someone begins their summer pre-mat program they will have to relinquish all of their waitlist spots, or does this apply only to general start dates in the fall?

Interesting question...I doubt there is a formal policy on such a matter since you aren't completely matriculated. um...it's going to put you in an odd position to not matriculate, however. BUT...the school certainly would have time to find a replacement for you and I do think that is the main reason that schools require you to drop from waitlists after matriculating. It's important that you know that Irvine will know beforehand if another school is trying to accept you (Traffic rule #8) and I suppose it's very possible they could say you already matriculated if they consider this program matriculation. But...based on traffic rule #9, it doesn't really look like this counts as official enrollment. Like I said, interesting question. I don't think it'll be an issue though and that's not a dig on you...I just think the majority of waitlist movement will occur before July 1st, if it hasn't already.

Well I called again today. And now they told me something different. I am not sure who I spoke with but I was told that I am on the bottom half of the waitlist. This is a major disappointment. She did mention there hadn't been a lot of waitlist movement yet. She also did mention that they are taking people from the various tiers which didn't make a whole lot of sense to me.
I am a bit bummed out was really hoping that UCI would pull through. I interviewed at UCLA but don't feel my chances are that great considering its UCLA. Looks like UCs are out of the question at this point.
I should be happy and grateful that I got into Tufts, SLU, and Chicago Med but I really wanted to stay in CA I guess. Actually I rejected the offer to the Tufts dual MD/MBA program because I would have had to start last week which would have killed my chances at a UC school period. I really hope that doesn't turn out to be a big mistake.

I also called today regaerding my place on the waitlist. I was told that I am on the bottom half, but ironically I was also told that they are taking equal numbers of applicants from both the top and bottom tiers.

Anyone have more info on that?

I guess there is no purpose for the tiers. Gayle said if they continue to take students from all over the waitlist then she will stop telling applicants that there is a top and bottom tier.

Kazzar- How did you find out about the books we need for this summer? Also, have you already received an orientation packet for the summer?
thanks

maria

I got the info for the books for the summer from an e-mail from Eileen Munoz. I'm sure you can e-mail her to verify or wait for the orientation packet.

I didn't get an orientation packet, but I was sent this email 5/16:

Good morning!

This is to inform you that your named has been placed on the Pre-Entry Priority Housing List. Someone from housing will be contacting you directly, so please do not contact them.

Thank you and I look forward to seeing you July 1st. We are finalizing the schedule Pre-Entry Program and when it is ready we will be doing a mail out. In the meantime you might be interested in knowing the books that you will want to purchase for use during the summer. They are:

Human Gross Anatomy by Leonard
Grant's Dissector by Sauerland
Atlas of Human Anatomy by Netter

(during the regular year there will be an additional text-Clinical Anatomy by Moore and Dalley)

For Biochemistry, we will provide you with core notes. During the regular year the book used will be Stryer's Biochemistry 5th Edition.

Is it true that if you are on the waitlist and do not write a letter or intent or an update letter, then you'll forever remain on the waitlist? Also, any clarification on the mysterious "high" vs. "low" on the waitlist?

That isn't true at all. I know people who have gotten off the waitlist without writing letters of intent.

One of my friends got in UCI last Thursday. I so envy him.
I start losing hope here, guys!!! If I enroll in another med school, will I be automatically kicked out of the waitlist?
