Yeah it's really mean to do it like this...They should just send an email at 12:01...Might not be as nice and as personal to the people as a call, but it would save a lot of stress.

Clearly this new way of doing the phone calls was an epic fail.

First of all, congrats to those of you who have been accepted. Hard work pays off in the end!
Second, if you could be so kind, for those of you who have been accepted, did your AADSAS portal change (normal or mobile)?

mine has changed now, but it didn't change till this afternoon and I got the phone call yesterday morning

I hope they have this all sorted out by next year. I'm sorry they've put you all through this. Congratulations to everyone who has been accepted, and best of luck to those of you who are still under review!

anybody else hear from UNC? i still havent got a call yet...

I am instate I have a decent gpa 3.86, 150+ hours of dental shadowing, 200 hours of volunteer, work in a research lab. And I have a decent Dat 21....
Ppl that got calls today would you mind posting stats?

Sorry to post so late. I've been watching this page since yesterday. I didn't hear anything yesterday and - like everybody else here who didn't hear anything - was quite upset with the waiting and uncertainty of it all (it wasn't helped by the pity party I was throwing myself). There were a few posts yesterday that left me with a glimmer of hope for hearing something today or later in the week, and around 2:00 or so this afternoon my status was changed to "CONGRATULATIONS! You have been accepted to UNC School of Dentistry..." I received the coveted phone call around 6:00pm from one of the faculty I had interviewed with. I know this isn't encouraging to those who haven't received a call yet (just like I wasn't encouraged by reading all the celebratory posts yesterday), but there may still be a glimmer of hope after all.

STATS:
3.67 GPA in sciences; 3.40 overall GPA (it's actually more like a 3.6, but that's another story)
DAT: Total Science 21; PAT 22; Academic Avg 22
Volunteer experience: 200 hrs
Shadowing experience: 150 hrs
School presentations: 50 hrs
Spanish proficient + "real world experience" (= out of school and working for several years)

I neglected to mention I'm in-state, was wait listed last year, and applied very early this year.

Best wishes to you all!

I just feel like the first wave is done, i feel like now that AADSAS has updated for everyone thats it... if you have that updated then you are in, otherwise, your on the waitlist...

Our stats are actually very similar, save for the out of school part, Do you remember who called you?

My interviewer just called me...at 7:45 while I was riding my bike down the road to class.

For those who have been accepted at UNC, have you also been accepted at other schools? Which ones? Anyone accepted at both UNC and ECU?

I only really applied to UNC.

(haven't heard back from the other places yet because I sent secondary stuff rather late)

I was waitlisted by ECU actually. I was accepted at NYU, U of Maryland, and UNC.

AA 21
GPA 3.8
in state

Yes I'm pretty sure that's what it means. I haven't been contacted yet either and if I recall correctly I wasn't contacted last year in early Dec. I'm not sure if AADSAS status will say waitlisted though I think it remains "under review" until the next wave of acceptances. Guess we just have to hold out hope for a couple more months 👍

AADSAS has updated for everyone that was called and accepted? if so then it looks for sure like the 1st round is done...

just found this thread. i got a phone call on the 3rd at 830 am from a 3rd year. i will most definitely be accepting this offer (in-state).

I really need to block this website. Every time I read this thread a small part of me dies on the inside.

Hey guys,

I know from a trustworthy source who works at the dental school that UNC does things a little differently than some other schools.. On Dec 3 they only give out ~30 acceptances and those only to minority students and students with the highest stats. One of their goals is to have the incoming makeup match the racial makeup of the state percentage-wise and they try to do that at the beginning. That said, if you didn't get a call yesterday, don't lose hope. UNC still has the majority of its acceptances to give out. You still have a chance if you didn't get the call yet. Good luck!

This is incorrect. At least the racial makeup part...

If you look at the c/o 2017 fb group, it indicates otherwise...

I don't care what the racial makeup ended up being, the statement that those individuals were selected in order to satisfy some class quota or makeup is wrong.

Think what you will but don't demean other's hard work by stating they were selected because of race to fill a quota.

Whoa, whoa calm down. Nobody was saying that. Clearly none of those people got in due to their race - they are all brilliant students and future dentists, or they wouldn't have gotten an interview.

However, also do not misunderstand - UNC DOES have a racial quota. From Dr. Wilder himself, he admits that each class is meant to reflect the ethnic makeup of NC as a whole. Therefore, think about it like this: if they admitted non-minority students first, and all of those students accepted, then there would not be enough spots left to meet their quota for the ethnic make-up. By accepting minority students first they can fill the gaps later on and decrease their deviation from the state distribution.

Again, I meant no offense to you or to anyone who was accepted to UNC regardless of ethnicity. However, don't think that UNC doesn't take ethnicity into account when accepting people, because then you are just lying to yourself. Hard work or not, it plays a large factor in acceptance at that school.

Large factor?.... would love to know where you get your information.... I'd be lying if I said it isn't considered.... but in the end i'm not sure how "large" of a factor it is. The "larger" factor of consideration is how well rounded of a candidate a person is, ethnicity does play in to that some.

Well large is a pretty subjective term. But you admitted yourself that there is some ethnic bias, and currently the admission statistics seem to show that bias.

I'll leave this subject by saying, from someone familiar with the process.... Not heard from a reliable source.... This "bias" You speak of is only in your head. Ethnicity is considered, but bias is completely different.

Telemonster is actually correct in his assessment. He never said anything about bias, but Dr. Wilder did mention that UNC attempts to match NC's ethnic makeup and it works out like that every year. I'm not sure in what order people are accepted, and actually Telemonster a decent number of people in that facebook group are c/o 2016, so it's hard to judge based off of that. But in the end it will end up similar to past years.

That is true, I hadn't considered that. But still, the only point I was trying to make, and I think we can all agree on, is that there is an ethnic make-up that the ADCOM tries to achieve for each class.

And arguing about words like "large" and "bias" is pure semantics, because its obvious that two people will not agree on how those words are used. I was only trying to convey what Dr. Wilder mentioned, that the class represents NC as a whole.

Oh definitely I agree with you 100%. Good luck getting in!

Anyone hear about January interview invites yet?

Anyone hear about January interview invites yet?

Not sure if this is correct but I heard from a reliable source within the d-school that they're done with interviews and won't be doing any post-December ones. Someone please correct me if this is incorrect, I'm just repeating what I've "heard".

Unless your source is Dr. Wilder, I wouldn't take it seriously. So many people have 'reputable sources' that have been completely incorrect.

edit what I just said.

just got a January interview invite!

I just got the email for the January interview also! Does anyone know if there are typically only a few seats left in January or if there are a considerable amount? I have no idea. Thanks!

They fill 2/3 of the seats in December, so I guess roughly 27 seats or so remain?

The prof I talked to said he spoke with Dr.Wilder directly but I guess he was bluffing haha

Exactly! It's not over til it's over. And once you get an interview the stats become much less important.

And I was there on 10-13. I'm pretty sure it is my top choice now, I was really impressed by the entire interview process.

I was just curious to know if anyone is willing to give me any info on the structure of the interviews and any other info that would be helpful to know about the interview day.

Thanks!

Day starts at 8:00 am, good idea to be around 15 min early. There are refreshments that's served. You're placed in one of four groups and you'll stick with that group throughout the day. There are 2 faculty interviews and 1 student interview, a school tour, financial aid, admissions info, and a student panel.

Don't forget to attend the pizza social the night before to meet a lot of current students. Nobody attending will have input to the adcom so It's a great opportunity to ask a ton of questions.

cheers
