someone in the OFFICIAL INTERVIEW thread mentioned they received a UNC interview offer today. so hopefully more people can hear good news.

I'm an in-state applicant who currently attends UNC for undergrad. I was accepted to UNC's SOM in October and will likely be attending in the fall. Does anyone know the best way to go about finding a roommate? Should I start a thread on here maybe?

is there a UNC SOM facebook thread? there is one for dental. and I would think people can ask in there.

Anyone know where people are going to find roommates for next school year (besides craigslist)? I'm looking for one (not necessarily from the dental school but anyone in grad school really) for my townhouse. Thanks!

anyone have any idea when their second round of acceptances will be? Are there any more out of state slots??

I got this link from one of the old UNC posts. It's a schedule of committee meetings for the dental school:
http://www.dentistry.unc.edu/resources/committees/schedules/schedule.pdf

It just updated today for Spring 2013 and says that the next admissions committee meeting will be January 30th. Not sure how they'll be making calls this round, but at least we know roughly when to start freaking out, haha.

Good find.

Good luck to everyone at their interview this weekend (tomorrow)!

Read the interview feedback for UNC on SDN if you haven't yet...It helped me out a ton.

Would you mind posting a link to that on this thread? Much appreciated!

Does anyone know exactly how UNC selects their candidates for offers of admission? Do only the people you interview with choose or does the whole committee get together and somehow choose? Just curious. Thanks!

So if we interviewed before december but didnt hear back then January 30th would be the last chance?

hey guys I have a quick question!
I was reading through the pre-reqs for unc dental and just noticed they require that the pre-req courses need to be no longer than 5 years old.
some of the pre-req courses are freshmen classes(english, intro to chem, bio)
so does mean for all the applicants who were not admitted right after graduating will need to repeat these courses?

I will probably call the office to ask once they are open but wanted to know if anyone had a similar experience in the past.

thanks!

Not necessarily. I'd say case by case basis, email Wilder or Morano to confirm. They can grant a waiver from retakes or prereqs if similar courses are taken. Again, email Wilder or Morano.

In previous years, was AADSAS changed to reflect an acceptance before people received a call from UNC? I know we're still a few weeks away from hearing, but I'm just curious.

Hey everyone,
I have a few questions about how UNC-CH goes about actually choosing candidates AFTER an interview has taken place. I'm an in-state applicant and was in Chapel Hill this weekend for my interview. This is now my second time applying and I feel like I was MUCH, MUCH better this time around, in terms of how my interview went. Having said that, my stats are on the low side, but my EC are stellar.

Now, my first question is what role the 3 interviewers actually play in which candidates get offered admission? I really felt like I made a strong connection with both dentists and the student and that they really got an excellent peek at who I am as a person. So, do they only meet to put a score on my application or will these same three people be intimately involved in guiding my application towards getting an acceptance if they genuinely believe I deserve it. The only reason I am nervous is because like I said, I really feel I made a connection with these people and don't think that a simple interview score would translate as well. My biggest worry is that these three people will think I would be a good fit for the school, they bring it up and the main admissions committee, and I get flatly rejected because my stats are not up to par. I mean, how much of a possibility is that?

Second, what role does the non-faculty dentist really play? I feel like I connected with my non-faculty person the most. We ran 5 minutes over and both he and I were cracking jokes by the end of it. I just am curious how much influence they really have given that I googled him and his practice is about 45 minutes from CH (I know...stalker move!)? That makes me nervous that his only job was to get to know me and then to slap a score on my application whereas if he was actually sitting at the table when a decision was being made, he would be a good advocate for me.

Anyway, Seahawk was kind enough to already speak with me and was under the impression that the interviewers main job is to basically get to know us, and then just put an interview score on the application with how we did. From there, it was up to some other people on the adcom to actually admit us. Anyone else able to shed some details on this? Also, for those who have already been accepted, who was the person to contact you via phone (faculty, non-faculty, student, other)?

Finally, I looked at the Facebook C/O 2017 page earlier and it said there were 74 members. Please tell me that does not mean there are currently only 7 remaining seats available....

Thanks for taking the time to read all of this stuff and help calm my mind! As I'm sure you can tell, I'm freaking out just a little bit!!!

Not sure about most of your questions but for this one, no, that's not what it means. Current students also will join the FB groups to answer questions and meet the incoming freshmen. I believe (based solely on what I've read here, so take it with a grain of salt) that UNC usually offers about 2/3 of its seats in the first round, so there are about 25-30 remaining, assuming all offers were accepted.

Dr. Wilder said there are 36 spots still available in the 2017 class.

Someone was brave enough to ask during our question time with Dr. Wilder on 1/12/13 interview day. To that someone - thank you! 😉

Question - Does anyone think they know when the next round of acceptances may go out?

I’ve been looking around SDN and I have a guess but I’d really like to hear anyone else’s opinion! I don’t want to put too much weight into this but this schedule (http://www.dentistry.unc.edu/resources/committees/schedules/schedule.pdf) states the admission committee will meet on 1/30/13. Reading back through the *UNC Dental Applying 2011* forum on SDN it looks like that same schedule said the admissions committee would meet on 1/25/12 and that was the day a lot of people posted that they were accepted to UNC. Given, after a day of bulk acceptances there may still be sporadic offers but I was just trying to figure out when the next big round of UNC acceptances may go out.

Based off that one webpage/PDF and SDN I’m assuming that there will be another round of acceptances on 1/30/13.

What do you guys think?

throughout the years ive heard a few things. dont know if anything is true or not. but from what i know....

they meet up immediately after the interview is over ~1pm or whenever the day was done. and the 3 talk about who they liked and pretty much nominate 1 or 2, i dont know, people.

ive also heard that not every interviewer is on the actual panel. ive also been worried about someone who interviewed me, not being there and instead, having my info on a sheet of paper for everyone to based it on.

but who knows!

ive also heard the student interviewer has no real negative or positive factor, BUT they can give you an extra boost if they nominate you out of the 7-8 people.

these are just things ive heard.

i know they sit around a table during selection day. lol

Thanks NRG! I feel like the idea of our interviewers "nominating" 1 or 2 people makes the most sense. This could be wrong, but it would be my guess that the dental school faculty member we interviewed with will actually be at the table when the final decision will be made, which I guess this year is 1/30/13.

As to Summer's question, I would say that based on previous years, you're right on point. The bulk of people will probably hear on 1/30/13 and 1/31/13. I'm sure there will be a few late calls going out that Friday, 2/1/13 but I get the sense from previous years that if you don't hear on Wednesday or Thursday, it's probably not a good sign.

i know there is a member on here, sarabellum (not sure if that is her exact name) who is either connected to the adcom or knows a bit about them. she would update us every few days of what was happening. I remember he posting that the adcom was meeting up during one of the mornings and the phone calls followed right after.

she was very helpful during the interview/acceptance cycles.

You guys are too sweet. Alas, I decided to not be on the committee this year to focus on other things. Be patient and good luck!

Sorry to bother you sarahbellum but I am just curious if this is close to how the actual selection process works? I understand if you can't give specifics but I was just hoping to find out to help calm my nerves a little. Thanks and I appreciate it!

Looks like they've made their decisions. Maybe won't release them until Feb but I got this email today in my rejection to UNC

"The Admissions Committee of the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry has made selections of acceptances and alternates for the DDS Class of 2017."

Good luck to everyone still in it

Interesting, that you for the update. So if people didn't get an email like this or don't within a day or 2 they're presumable accepted or waitlisted?

Pretty sure the adcom has not met yet to fill the remaining seats. Per the previous document, they're not meeting until 1/30 and I can't say I've seen an adcom meeting at school yet..... This letter must have come from the first round... Pure speculation on my part

Like Moabmad said, there was a link posted earlier in this thread of all the committee meetings at UNC and the adcom was listed as meeting 1/30. SES2012: when did you interview, when did you get email, and has your AADSAS status changed? For that matter, has anyones AADSAS changed?

I just got an email that said all SDN members in this particular thread have automatic acceptances.

Sounds legit.

Based on his/her previous posts, I don't think SES0112 interviewed. I could be wrong about that. A bunch of people on the main invite/interview/acceptance thread are reporting that they were rejected from UNC today without interview. I'm guessing everyone who didn't get selected to interview was rejected en masse today, and that those of us who did interview who haven't heard yet will have to wait until 1/30 or later to find out.

I did not interview, regardless just sharing a line from the email, will not be doing that again jeez lol.

My friend that works in the prosth dept said that he ran into his interviewer from the 12th and they said that they were meeting last night to go over applicants. so i dont know how that fits into the 1/30th date we keep seeing. any which way it seems like decision will be around the end of jan, early feb. Good luck everyone i know i am crossing my fingers to hopefully get a phone call.

If that is true, then I would be much happier if they would announce it earlier so I could know what the decision is, good or bad.

However, I'm sure they will wait until the 30th to start making calls - that afternoon most likely.

hmm.

every year they've gone by the pdf timeline. i can see this year being any different.
but who knows! the earlier the better!

what was the pdf timeline the 30th? and i feel like they would call early in the morning. but again i think that is the caller's discretion sometimes they have called in the afternoon ( some people got calls december 4th in the afternoon)

Has anyone's status changed from Received/Under Review since the Jan. 12th interview?

Has anyone's status changed from Received/Under Review since the Jan. 12th interview?

yes. its common for it to go from "invited for interview" to "rec/under review" after the interview.

i think it happens a few days after the interview

Does anyone know for sure if tomorrow is the big day??? I am getting nervous because my status has not changed yet.

The committee is supposed to meet tomorrow. Not sure when the calls will be made exactly. Tomorrow or possibly Thurs/Fri?

I do believe they will make calls tomorrow afternoon (meetings starts at 10am), then possibly more on Thurs. and I guess after that it may just be rolling admissions for the waitlist.

someone find some old threads and see how it was done.

So I looked at last year's thread, and it appears that most of the phone calls were received on Jan. 25th which was exactly the 3rd Wednesday after the last interview on Jan. 7th. There were a few people who said they got the call on the next day (Jan. 26th). Most of those who were called received the call in the afternoon.

Note: For this cycle tomorrow will be exactly 3 Wednesdays from the last interview on Jan. 12th. So I am speculating that most will hear something tomorrow and some will hear on Thursday morning. This is in accordance with the trends of last year.
Good Luck Everyone!!!

You guys should all expect the call on the day that is square root of the numbers of stars visible over Chapel Hill on the 4th consecutive Wednesday with a full moon after the day the application cycle opened. Expect the hour to be found by a complex algorithm that theoretical computer science cannot yet compute. However previous years have showed it to be 8:28AM (+/- 5.5749 minutes) at a 95% confidence interval.

I am a statistic astronomer and I approve this.
