Hey guys. I'm applying this cycle and UNC is definitely one of my top schools. My gpa is 3.95 but I'm a little worried about timing for the DAT. I know the website says an average of 20 but on here it seems like people have way above that. I'm graduating a year early but I'll take extra classes in Spring if it'll be better. I'm OOS and my major is Neuroscience with a minor in Psychology. Do you think moving my DAT back from June 3rd to late June will make a difference or should I just do the best I can and have my unofficial DAT for the first day of the cycle? Thanks!

Nah, it won't make a difference. My friend took hers late June, scored extremely well and was given an interview. I think she was also accepted!

just submit your application super early so you can get the secondary application

Overall DAT average for the class last year was a 22 AA, and the OOS average was a 24 AA. It shouldn't hurt at all to take the test later in June. It's most important that you score well. If it means having a complete application 3 weeks later, no big.

Thanks so much! I also plan to visit and tour the School. How are you liking it there? Also, I saw on the website that the gpa is around a 3.6. Will it help me that my gpa is much higher? In terms of if I get a lower DAT score. I'm trying to cover all of my bases.

Since you’re OOS, I’d try and maximize your DAT score but shoot for 21+ with your great GPA. If you get an interview, it’ll be more important to score well on your interviews than worrying about your DAT if you’re below the 24 OOS average.

I would highly suggest visiting the school, as that shows nicely as an OOS student (it also helps you learn a lot more about the program/atmosphere). It's fantastic here, and I love it! I have no regrets in taking UNC over other fantastic programs.

Here are the averages from last year... Class of 2023 hasn't been posted yet as they are still finalizing the group (it should be similar)

As is the case for most state programs, the OOS averages tend to be a bit more competitive across the board (AA-24, GPA-3.79). Your GPA is fantastic, and it will certainly help, but you still want to kill the DAT. Also, UNC takes a very holistic approach. So, ensure that the rest of your app is strong (especially leadership, volunteer, etc.) Feel free to send a PM if you need more info

Thank you so much! I definitely plan to visit I just need to figure out timing. The atmosphere and area seem like a great fit for me so I'm super excited to apply and hopefully get an interview. I'm glad they do a holistic approach!

Thanks so much! I'm definitely going to do my best. I plan to send in my application on June 4th and just have my DAT score added so I have the application in as early as possible.

I did almost exactly what you’re asking about. I moved my DAT back 3 weeks for extra time. I wanted a good 11 weeks of study and I think it made a big difference. I got my app in by the first week of July and got accepted to UNC as an OOS, so you’ve got nothing to lose.

I'm going to have 8-9 weeks but I also think it will help a lot. Seeing that you got in as OOS makes me have hope. Thanks so much!!! Hopefully I'll get in! One step at a time lol

Do you mind me asking what your stats were for OOS?? I just took my DAT and got a 22AA with a 20 TS but got the average/above average for OOS in RC (24), QR (23) and PAT (24). I have a 3.82 overall GPA and a 3.8 science GPA, with a good amount of volunteer and shadow hours as well as extracurricular activities and jobs. I also studied abroad in Tanzania and did research on ethno-medicinal plants. I am planning on submitting my app in the next 10 days! So basically what I'm asking is do you think that I have a shot?? The TS of a 20 is throwing me off with the OOS average being a 24. Thanks in advance and congrats!!!

You sound like you have a great app overall. I think you certainly have a shot. You’ve got above average in all stuff except TS. The TS would also be the only red flag I would think, but I don’t think you would immediately be disqualified. Remember, those are OOS averages so they take over and under as well. I got 20s in both RC and PAT.

Interviews count a lot as well. You really wanna show how you can uniquely add value to the dental class. But also, there’s luck involved, as UNC fits their class to the racial demographic of NC... so if you’re white, the class consists of the percentage of whites in the NC population. You can’t affect that aspect. Also, sometimes the adcoms are just looking for certain characteristics unknown to us all... can’t help that either :/

My stats were:

GPA 4.0 in Business Admin (Healthcare Management)

24 Bio
23 Gen Chem
30 OC
25 TS
20 RC
25 QR
20 PAT
24AA

About 300 hours of dental shadowing/work experience at time of application. I did a 2 year mission trip after high school and got to work with Hispanic congregations in the US.

Can anyone from OOS who interviewed last year please tell me what time your interview ended? I was told that the interviews would end at 1 pm and booked a flight out of Raleigh-Durham airport for 3 pm. Does this make sense to those who interviewed last year?

Last year, I also booked a flight for 3pm and was just fine. Enough to finish interviews, talk to people, and get to the airport on time. The airport is pretty small, so it was quick to get through security and to the gate.
