***The Official UNC Class of 2023 Interview/Acceptance Thread***

I just got waitlisted. Do they waitlist most of the interviewees that weren't accepted or just a small number? Thanks!

I had the same question - I got the waitlist email this morning too. The email said anywhere from 0 to 10 seats could open, so I'm assuming we're a few of the 10 people on the waitlist.

I also got waitlisted. My assumption would be that there are several more than 10 people on the waitlist.

In state, DAT: 23 GPA: ~3.4

Will they send out any additional alternate emails? I am currently in a masters program and was hoping to be able to send my improved grades in both academic update and emails to admissions for them to consider me for an alternate spot. Is that all but lost now? Is it worth it?

Could any UNC people (dental or undergrad) comment on the campus recreational/athletic facilities available to students? I can't seem to find much information online, not even a picture...

Also, is it true that UNC gives class percentiles as opposed to ranking everyone in a specific order? I thought I read this somewhere but can't quite remember where I heard this. Thanks!

I just graduated from UNC undergrad. UNC has a couple fitness gyms and lots of activities to keep you active. https://campusrec.unc.edu/

ditto to what Zburk said... As for the class rank, that is true that it runs by class percentile. I feel like it is not only beneficial for those who hope to specialize, but I also feel like it helps the class culture dramatically (eliminates cutthroat competition). Our class works together incredibly well, along with those above us.
Feel free to PM for more details.

Could a current dental student comment on the following?

1. When do students start interacting with patients and what specifically do students do when starting?
2. When do students get to start helping at volunteer clinics such as SHAC?
3. What types of international trips do students get to go on and when are they?

Students start working with patients the summer after their first year doing preventative dental care. First years can volunteer in shac first year but its competitive. If you really want to be involved with shac you should apply for a coordinators position. Students have to apply for international trips and they vary as to when they go. Most of the time it is over a summer.

Any current UNC students who were waitlisted initially? I was wait listed at UNC and NOVA, but have a few other acceptances.

Just to add on to what was previously said... There are also other volunteer clinics that students can get involved in from day one (HDA, Samaritan Clinic, etc.) If you want to have those volunteer experiences, they are available. As for international trips, there are currently 9 or so, but they are pushing to bring on more trips/availability in coming years.

how much are those international trips usually?

Just got a letter in the mail confirming my status on the waitlist. To those of you that also got this letter, did you also receive additional forms about technical standards and a campus safety form?

If you don't mind, I was wondering if there are any forms that must be sent back in to confirm that you want to be on the waitlist and if so, when are they due?? I'm out of town for the holidays and want to make sure I turn everything in on time!

Are we going to get some sort of confirmation from UNC once they receive our acceptance materials? I ended up sending everything twice (took photocopies of everything) since USPS said my first envelopes were lost in the mail, but it looks like both $500 deposit checks have been cashed according to my bank... so who knows.

My AADSAS portal says “Offer Accepted” but no direct word from UNC.

Nice. Mine still says “offer made” but that at least gives me something to look for.

Yepp! There are three forms in total to sign and mail back.

They decide who will be on the alternate list so they will send you the forms in the mail if they put you on that list 🙂

Hi! I was! I had committed at another school initially but gave up my seat after I got into UNC. No harm done minus the money you lose in the deposit (which is a pretty big harm done haha but hey, no regrets, it got me where I wanted to be in the long run plus some good friends in the city Id originally intended to move to)

Message me if you have any specific questions!

After submitting all of our paperwork, should we expect any communication from the school? Or will it be pretty quiet til summer?

My AADSAS portal changed to “Offer Accepted,” but I was hoping for a little more communication. I went ahead and notified other schools that I wasn’t coming, so it would have been nice to have a little more peace of mind that everything was in order...

Yeah, I’m in the same boat as you.

Sent you a message!

Anyone know how we get on ConnectCarolina? My acceptance had the same PID number that I used during undergrad, but it says my undergrad ONYEN has expired and I’m not entirely sure how to get back up and running.

Congratulations guys!!! Did your aadsas change or does it still say waitlisted?

Accepted off of the waitlist today. I have already paid my deposit at UCLA.
- OOS for both schools and I hope to pursue OMFS, and now I have to go through the decision process again.

I meant to add that I am totally excited about UCLA.... but I feel like I should at least consider UNC

Hello everyone, just wondering if anyone knows how to contact UNC admission officer via email? I looked at UNC website, they only have a phone number there. In fact, I need to find an email communication way with them. Really appreciate if anyone knows their email address, thanks in advance!

She's pretty good at responding back to emails promptly.

Are there a few places that most of the dental students live? Or does anyone have any recommendations on places to look at?

Is housing hard to get? How early should students find housing? I was accepted off of the waitlist, and I guess other students have already found roommates. How late is too late? I am still working on UNC vs. UCLA.

If your interested in unc definitely start looking for housing now. Most people find housing this time of the year. I’ve lived in chapel hill 7 years now and I’d say it’s pretty typically to start looking in February/ March time frame.

UNC allows OOS students to claim residency after the first year?

Can anybody tell me how to claim NC residency and when it can/should be done? Thanks!

I cannot find a list showing where graduates head after UNC Dentistry. For some schools I have information that shows how many went in to the military, how many went to private practice, how many went to residency, etc. Does anybody have a link for this for UNC?

Yes, you can claim residency for tuition purposes after the 1st year. It's a pretty straightforward process (have NC address, NC drivers license, change to NC car registration, register to vote). Your 'residency' will begin 366 days after you establish your residency.
For most, that will be the beginning of 2nd year, but some students were able to move to Carolina earlier and get it for Summer semester of 1st year... I even know of an incoming student that got everything set up in December to try and get IS tuition the Spring semester of 1st year.

If you have been accepted to UNC and have not done so already go to https://improv.itsapps.unc.edu/ to create your ONYEN (or reactivate it if you went UNC for undergrad). You'll need your PID. As for housing use Hotpads or Zillow if you want to find a townhouse/house rental, and there are also lots of apartment complexes around here. Several dental students live in Southern Village apartments for example. Start looking for housing ASAP. The good places go fast. Lots of people started looking for housing as early as November or December last year.
