I felt a stark contrast in vibes between my interview here and my interview at Tufts. Tufts felt much more laid-back and friendly.. that school is very into student well-being. They even have a well-being course for D1 year. UM definitely felt more traditional, rigid, serious, etc. Part of that is the difference in caliber of applicant attracted. The entire UM class is made up of strong applicants. For sure for sure... I recognize that every school has its mix of students--gunners, slackers, whatever. And I know that every school is going to kick our butts at one point or another. I guess I was just curious if anyone else got those vibes and are just shaking it off because it's UM? Or if other prospectives felt like it was friendly and awesome and don't know wtf I'm referring to. I mean who knows, I could've simply gotten unlucky with a group of students who I personally wouldn't want to study with lol
The first point I made to myself when debating this was: what am I trying to accomplish with my education? I didn't come this far to look for somewhere I can clown around at. I want to be shaped into the best health care provider I can be, be exposed to cutting-edge research, provide for the underserved, and have opportunities for post-grad education.
Towards the end of my interview at UM, I started really talking to the other interviewees and dental students. I liked everyone I talked to! The people in the fb group seem awesome, too. I think it's more of a function of everyone expecting UM to be high intensity and having on their game faces. It's absolutely possible to be high-performing and also laid-back and fun to be around. I put my UM deposit down without thinking twice.
edit: Not downplaying the importance of student well-being! Very important for everyone to consider.
