GO CLASS OF 2011, kaya natin to

According to some sources in the UST, the class of 2011 will be a very important class as we will (hopefully) be graduating on UST's quadricentennial year. The case maybe that a lot of the professors and even the senior students will expect a lot from us...

Addendum:
According to the same sources in the UST, the materials our batch passed in the application are the only ones necessary for passing. We need not comply with the HDs and the TCs the admission is requiring of us.

hello 🙂 i just found out that i got accepted
have a little problem with the dorms, though
are there any other dormitories with aircon around ust that has the same services as that of sta. catalina ladies' residence?
ive checked sacred family just behind jollibee dapitan.
can anybody suggest other dorms? 🙂

Hi, I'm a graduating B.S. Med. Tech. (BSMT) student from the same university and was also accepted in the UST-FMS. Anyway, I have several questions:

1. Is the curriculum that of Problem-Based Learning, or are we going to have the traditional curriculum because I heard the traditional curriculum gives advantage to BSMT graduates especially in the second year since several subjects are just a repeat of our 4th year (professional) subjects. I really have no problem with PBL but I want to know which one are we going to have.

2. In line with question # 1, what subjects are we going to take in the 1st semester of the 1st year? And approximately how much are we going to spend on books for the semester?

3. Is it advisable for me to look for a nearby residence already given that we are still in our first year? I live in Fairview, Quezon City and travel time is usually 30 mins. - 1 1/2 hours, depending on the time and the traffic.

4. What will our daily schedule most likely be?

I know I have a lot more to ask but these are the only ones I can think of right now, so...🙄

check out this thread: http://ustexchange.yehey.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7609

you'll get a lot of info and tips for the incoming freshmen at ust-fms.

anyway, i'll try answering some of your questions.

i think they're using an integrated curriculum. there are still lectures and after you have small-group discussions and laboratory activities. and yes, med tech grads have the edge because the second year subjects include microbio, parasitology, hematology, and i believe you're already masters in these fields. while for first year, the pt and ot grads are the ones who have the advantage.

subjects, i think there would be some modifications. now we have yearly subjects (physiology, biochemistry, anatomy -- clinical anatomy and embryology included, histology and neuroanatomy) and semestral subjects (preventive medicine, bioethics, and pyschiatry). if you're a book freak and you want to buy all the books recommended in all the subjects, hehe, i think you'll spend more or less twenty thousand pesos.

well, if you could be in class before seven then it's alright if you stay at your place. class schedule's usually 4 hours for physio, 4 hrs biochem, and 5 hrs anatomy (you have two class days a week for these subjects). then one day in a week class for histo (3 hrs) and neuroanatomy (2 hrs). for the semestral subjects: you'll only have this for one semester, either first or second sem, also once a week class, psychiatry (1 hr), prevmed (3 hrs) and biethics (2 hrs). 😀

wohhoo!! im so happy that i got accepted 😀
all i have to worry about is the dorm-thingie

oh my... i just got back from sampaloc, manila and im having a teeny weeny problem finding a dorm that includes board and lodging plus security. I forgot that everybody here starts reserving rooms as early as january!

sta catalina's ladies' residence (lacson street)
Holy Spirit Ladies' res (p.noval street) and the dorm beside it
Immaculate Conception Ladies' Hall (espana)
Holy Family Dormitory (beside Jollibee Dapitan)

phew! pretty pain in the feet, eh? hahaha

i have one. Once you get into med school. Find a classmate who you think you can get along with and share an apartment. For the meantime i think any of those dorms will do.

hi. i was wondering if there's an online version of the list of successful applicants for ust-fms?

I got in. 😀 I'm hoping to study here. 🙂

*Tomorrow is the last day for step 1 (paying the 25,000 down payment)- just an announcement

*Admin secretary said that we would have to wait our schedule for the physical exam at the health unit; lab results should be done 1 week before the physical exam, I was told

*the transcripts and HDs are to be given after the 2007 graduation

For what ever its worth, I already know 2 people who have canceled their rights to UST- FMS

would just like to inquire what sources youd recommend for first year module topics namely

man in health and disease, art and science of medicine, reproductive and child health, tropical and special infections

Thanks a bunch

😀 🙂

I believe those modules are no longer followed. If you found those on the UST website, don't count on it because it never gets updated and I've read somewhere that we're going to be taught by subjects again... 🙂

those modules aren't used anymore coz those are our modules during the PBL years. the website's not updated so don't believe in it.

Schedule for physical exams are already out, currently posted outside the Admissions office... I think its viewable by Monday already.

Is anybody already finished with their laboratory exams? Im having second (even third) thoughts about getting the anti Hepatitis vaccines. Has anybody a schedule of the first day of classes? Is it the 11th, 12th or 13th (i thought i read somewhere that theyll really be taking independence day)?

My physical exam is scheduled this Tuesday (April 10). Fortunately it coincides with the date of our enrollment for the in-house review for MT graduates so I won't have to come to school on another day. The list has been posted there for some time now. I also had my lab exams done last Monday. I think they'll ask you to get the vaccines if the results of your titer is low (or if you haven't had the vaccine at all). When's your physical exam? 🙂

Mine is on the 19th, ill be having my laboratories on the 10th. So, youll be taking the MT boards? RMT, MD right? Youre from UST too Id take it?

i think you should have those anti hepa vaccines, whether you like it or not. or else, you won't be cleared for enrollment.

Thanks- I thought thats what theyd do

CHARITY PURPOSES (good things have a special way of coming back at you)

Prices:
CBC- 300, Urinalysis- 180, Fecalysis- 160, Anti HBS- 835, IGM with HAV- 1325, HBSAG- 720, PE- 250

Meron na ba kayong HDs or TCs?

hehe, just a precaution. better prepare extra money for the tests because the price listed might just apply for the UST graduates ( <-- they have discounts at the UST Hospital for the laboratory exams).

unfortunately, the discount does not apply to incoming freshmen. 🙁

Yes, yes, and yes. 😀

The posted prices are correct, and UST students get 50% off on the CBC, Urinalysis, and Fecalysis. But when you pay for the labs there will be a small additional fee for the tubes, gloves etc. 👎

ill be handing in my labs tomorrow- come to think of it, do I already have to bring my stool sample or do I really have to poop there? Hahahaha- its no matter bringing a sample of my stool already right?

hmm... i just found out that my phys exam sched's tomorrow and im still in bicol 🙁 haha

are laptops important during the first year of med school?

if you miss your physical exam date, you'll be rescheduled at a later date (maybe by May already). same thing happened to me, my physical exam was scheduled on our graduation day, i eventually had my PE first week of May last year.

Laptops... not really an extreme necessity although you'll notice later on that many of your classmates have laptops with them, hehe. 😀 useful during presentations (physio case discussion and labcon, biochem lab reporting, ana sgd and scofyl case discussion), also for reviewing microscope slide pictures, lab demo videos (great help during practical exams in anatomy, neuroanatomy and histology). voice recorder might also help if you're too sleepy to listen to the lectures.

when's the first day of class this june at UST? thanks

Yup, we hate receiving full specimen cups! 😀

I wavered my anti Hbs since i havent any hepa B vaccines at all, ill just get the hepa B vaccine (55 pesos from what I saw in the price matrix) to be administered on the day of the PE April 19. Who'll be having their PE at the same date? Well, may mga nakita na akong potential classmates- grrraaabbbbeeeeee kakaexcite na mag med.

"No body knows when they might wake up, nobody knows..."- tumutunong sa isip ko ngayon ehehehehe

Hepa B vaccine costs P600.00 (I had to receive a booster shot during my PE). Tetanus vaccine costs P55.00 🙂

Wasnt it stated in the guidelines for enrollment that those who havent had Hepa B vaccines need not have the Anti HBS determination (but instead would just have to get the Hepa B vaccine [on the date of physical examination] from the UST Health service)?

hmm... i better think again about the laptops. im scared that it will just hinder me from studying.. im a bit of an internet addict kasi

hmm.. from what i remember, we were ALL required to have the HBsAg determination. based on the results, the health service decided if we need to have the Anti-Hepa B shots or not..

Yes, but what about Anti-HBs?

hi everyone! i'm new here... anyone know when's the first day of classes really begin? they say it's on june 12 but it's a national holiday...

For those without the vaccine, anti-HBs levels is not only indicative of the presence of the vaccine. It also reflects the presence of naturally produced antibodies to Hepatitis B. Levels of HBsAg may decrease over time, the only way to detect previous hep B infection may be with the use of Anti-HBs specially when done in the absence of the other serologic markers of hepatitis B like anti-HBc or anti-HBe.

The presence of anti-HBs from either naturally acquired or as a result of vaccination can persist for life. So if you haven't received HepB vaccine yet and YET you have a positive titer of anti-HBs, you might have had hepatitis B without knowing it. Depending on the school protocol, you might not be accepted as you might pose a risk to patients.

Handed in my laboratories (the anti- HBS included), they should have posted to bring 2 copied of 2 by 2 pics in filling out the biodata sheet whilst retrieving the request for the physical exam.

The clerk in the admissions said the first day is gonna be on the 12th, probably theyll be pushing the holiday on the 11th para hindi dia pichido.

Whose enrolling on the 28th?

Ah oo nga no.. 😀

How could one advertise this thread to incoming freshies this year?

Do you think its time already to make a yahoo group for incoming freshies?

sorry but i think you don't have a choice. you need to have that Anti-HBs to know if u need the vaccine or not. meticulous sila regarding the PE. or else you won't be cleared.

Hehe ang UST Pay Lab talaga ultimo band-aid pinapabayaran at naka-indicate pa sa resibo.. 😀

Anyway, may nagtitinda ng Reichter stethoscope dun sa health service for P3,800.00 may free pa na diagnostic set (otoscope, laryngoscope & cobalt blue filter), tapos add P1,000.00 may kasama pang mercurial na sphygmo. Bumili nga ako eh, ok kaya un?

hehe, seems like you're up for a strong first year coalition. actually, we (the incoming second years) also have our own yahoo groups. but it's not all first year, it's by section. this is because each section has its own schedules and different activities (and we can not disregard the fact that there will be intersection competitions, you'll know this later on).🙄 and seldom will you be interacting with the other sections (unless you already know them before or you're co-organization with them). you'll only see them in the same room on the first week of class and a small group from the other sections during quizzes and exams.

wow, you're already excited about those diagnostic instruments, hehe. actually, during first year you will not be needing those yet. it's only during second year that you'll be using these instruments. anyway at least you have it already prepared. hope it's a nice buy. you'll be encountering also during the year some people advertising those things in class.😀

just a piece of advice, maintain your eagerness all throughout the school year. do your best and you could easily make it through.

Thanks- am just anxious/ excited about a new college life (new school, new course, new classmates, new uniform, new new...), para hindi ko na masyadong problemahin ang adjustment (lalo na sa ibang tao). Nagbabago bago rin ba ang mga kaklase sa isang section after each and every year (halimbawa, may di na makakapagpatuloy ng medicine, ma che- check and balance ba iyon gaya ng yung isang estudyante from another section eh fifilupan yung nawalang slot)?

I had my PE awhile ago. It didn't take long, actually. Just an actual examination by a doctor, an update of immunization (got a tetanus shot for now, I'll be getting the hepa-B booster next week), an x-ray, and a dental examination.

The Hepa-B shot costs 600, the tetanus shot costs 60, and the chickenpox vaccine costs 1600+.

i think you'll be in the same section until higher years (unless you become an irregular student). besides it would be very unfair if you would be placed on another section, that would be another adjustment stage for you.

i've seen the list of the higher years, there are uneven number of students per section so i guess the sectioning will not really change regardless of the number of those who dropped or who were not able to make it to higher level from a certain section.
