After my 1st year of university i spent a few months working at a Pharmaceutical Consultant company on contract reading drug product reviews. Aside from that i dont have a lot of work experience

I want to know if it makes sense for me to apply for the 2015 entering class for US m.d. schools if i havent applied yet. Same question for the D.O. schools. What do you think my chances are for MSUCOM specifically? they say they are taking about 25 canadian students each year.

Hello everyone,

I was wondering if I could get some advice on which secondaries I should tackle first. My AACOMAS just verified last week and I'm starting to get secondary applications in. I've been managing to keep up so far, but will likely start falling behind since the DO secondaries are very extensive.

My stats are:
cGPA - 3.18, sGPA 3.0
MCAT - 7ps, 10vr, 8bs
Southeast Asian, Very low income (significantly below poverty line). CA resident.
7 years for undergrad. Worked full time throughout undergrad to support family as medical interpreter. Now working 2 jobs at 70+ a week.
Director of student clinic. Founder of hepatitis immunization project. Several years research in clinical nutrition, dermatology, emergency medicine, and hepatology.

Applied for:
Western OR/CA
TUCOM
TUNY
TUNEV
LECOM both
VCOM all 3
Pcom - PA and Georgia
AT Stills
ACOM
Campbell
CCOM
LMUCOM
Marian
Nova

I would make sure to submit to WVSOM, ACOM, VCOM-Auburn, LMU, SOMA, KCOM, Touro-NV, LECOM-E, Western-Or, and Touro-NY (Middletown campus). At most of the rest, chances are pretty weak.

consider adding PNWU.

Ah yes, PNWU is a part of my list as well. From what I've heard, Western-CA provides an excellent medical education. Can the same be assumed to be true about it's sister campus Western-OR?

Would love some input!

10/9/9 = 28 MCAT
sGPA = 3.3
cGPA = 3.47
postbacc/masters GPA = 3.55
2000+ Hours EMT, 800+ Big Bro, 200+ shadowing (50 hours DO), also special olympics, tutor, etc.
1st and 2nd author publications
Non-trad.

Submitted AACOMAS end of July, took two months to verify, got secondaries end of september/early october, recently finished secondaries. The school list is below. Should I add more schools? I started getting really worried all of a sudden. Also, retook to the MCAT and got 8/8/11 🙁 Combined would be 30 but I know most schools don't look at that; I have not released the score to AACOMAS--should I? I tried to avoid deep south schools-trying to stay away from strong conservative thinking (LUCOM-never never never)

Which school(s) would you say are the most well known? Additionally, does going to a provisionally accredited medical school hinder my ability to land a residency?

First time poster, starting to get antsy in the midst of this nerve wrecking process!

NY
26 (10,7,9)
3.4s/3.55c - Ivy League
Full time clinical research position, psych research during undergrad, collegiate gymnastics, various volunteer experience and 50+ MD/DO shadowing.

I applied to LECOM-E, PCOM, NYITCOM, TOURO-CA, Western-Pomona, and CCOM.
I have an interview at NYITCOM in January but have had silence from the other 5. I've been complete since mid-September

What are my chances at the remaining 5 schools?

I would apply to more schools. Your current list is a little top heavy.

Okay up to this point I have only lurked and not posted, but I feel like I will sleep a little better at night with some insight from other people who are going through/have gone through the same struggle... I am a third cycle applicant (first cycle I applied way too late, second cycle I had some medical issues that prevented me from moving forward with my applications after receiving my secondaries). I applied very early in the cycle this time (read: first day possible for both primaries and secondaries) to a few schools, but was unable to apply to any more due to financial constraints. I am now in better shape money-wise and wondering if I should apply to more or if it's too late in the cycle to have a real shot.

So far I have applied to:
WVSOM - Accepted and turned them down
WCU- Accepted
TUCOM CA- Low Alternate
CCOM- Secondary verified waiting on II
NYCOM-Secondary verified waiting on II

cGPA:
3.45
sGPA: 3.2
MCAT: 28

ECs: Was a certified CNA, some shadowing experience of MDs but no DOs, lots of lab research experience, Kendo club VP, worked 20-30 hours a week throughout my whole undergrad to pay my way through college which left little time for meaningful ECs

I am strongly considering accepting William Carey's offer except that I haven't heard back yet from NYCOM or CCOM which were both preferred choices for me. I am very nervous though because I felt good about my TUCOM interview and did not expect at all to get put as a low alternate. I am wanting to eventually work in a city setting, probably leaning towards a dermatology or emergency medicine residency, so I worry that going to a medschool in a more rural settings geared towards family medicine will make that goal more difficult to reach. I am wondering which (if any) additional schools I could/should apply to as a bigger safety net at this point. I would really appreciate any and all input I can get!

First, congrats on your acceptances! Going to a school in a rural setting will not make getting into those residencies more difficult to reach, what matters most are your board scores and letters. I know nothing about WCU but I would look into affiliated hospitals, I'm sure they aren't all in the middle of nowhere. Personally, if I was in my third cycle, I would take that acceptance and never look back. You could apply to more schools but with it being this late in the cycle, I don't think it would be worth it, you've already got an acceptance at hand, save your money. I also know CCOM places a lot of emphasis on numbers (unsure of NYCOM) so I wouldn't hold your breathe. I have almost identical numbers and decided not to go through with my secondary for CCOM due to this.

Just had surgery for carpal tunnel and my ulnar nerve... trying to stay on top of things for next cycle. I applied only MD as i have to retake organic lab to satisfy "C" grade prereq and still need physician letter. signed up to retake and I am wondering what schools to apply to as a new yorker. location is less important. please forgive my formatting i copied and edited what i believed important from a previous post.

the Touro's interview and then waitlist (or reject) tons of people with lower scores. I saw it happen all last cycle.

Thanks for the insight! I think I will go ahead and save my money as suggested. A lot of my insecurity about WCU doesn't just come from it's slightly more urban environment, but also it's strong focus on Family Medicine (which I'm not really interested in) and the fact that it is only 5 years old. Their campus and facilities were beautiful and new, but I worry that my graduating class would still be guinea pigs as the administration tries to get their grasp on how they want to do things. I'm nervous too that we might be overlooked for rotations and residencies in favor of graduates from longer-established schools. Having met the administrative staff as the school, I think they are definitely going in good directions and doing all the right things, but being a new school it is inevitable that they will have to make some changes and tweaking before they get it just right.

Hello all!

I normally don't post on here, but thought I'd go ahead and try to get some advice from some of the members here.

cGPA: 3.92
sGPA: 4.0
MCAT: 26 (10/6/10)

EC's: 100's of hours overall
Research
Biochem Tutor
Volunteered as a Campus Safety Escort, and in various clubs, during undergrad
ER Volunteer
Physician Shadowing
Strong Letters

Interests:

Internal Medicine
Psychiatry

Preferences:

I live in California and have a slight preference for staying in state, but honestly I am okay with going anywhere. If I had to pick a first choice, I'd definitely say WesternU since I live close, though I know their stats tend to be more on the competitive side and I don't think my MCAT is competitive enough.

Other considerations:
I also come from a disadvantaged background and have struggled with some fairly unique personal life experiences that I've been recovering from, but I'm not sure how much that would factor in. I'm curious which schools I'd have a decent shot at. I'm especially worried about my MCAT score - I know that 6 on verbal closes a lot of doors. Any advice on where to apply, or any other tips in general, would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

What schools should I add or subtract???

Please don't quote this post. Tag me with "@asdf123g"

@asdf123g I think you have a nice rounded list. Your numbers put you in the running for about every school, just make sure to apply broadly enough (I would say 12+ schools).

Personally, I would take off WCU, LUCOM, and VCOM-Auburn (since you already have VC).

@user3 : okie doe, have 18 schools on the list currently. I noticed you said to ommit: WCU, LUCOM, and VCOM-Auburn and they are all new schools. Is that the reason? I know the LUCOM controversy so understandable. Whats wrong with WCU?? I kept Auburn because although I am much closer to VC I figured the lower stats for admittance might give me an advantage given VC rejects me. While I have preferences, beggars cant be choosy and id go anywhere.

cGPA: 3.8
sGPA: 3.56
MCAT: 25 with 2 retakes

ECs: -extensive shadow experience with 3 DOs and MD, volunteer research assistant, hospital volunteer, currently working in a medical office

I'm open to anywhere and prefer not retaking the mcat but I don't want to go through the trouble if I don't absolutely need to. NY resident went NYIT.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!
