I am trying to decide between Fitz, Bolognia, or even Rook's for my ONE go to text during my Dermatology training. Already have Andrew's (the review book), Habif (something 1st years in my program go through in the first month or two as a primer), as well as other odds and ends like the orange book (as I call it).

Any thoughts for this dork who is planning on staying in academics, continuing basic science research? Any help is much appreciated

bolognia. hands down.

bolognia is widely considered the gold standard text, and for good reason. detailed, comprehensive, fantastic diagrams and charts. fitz is the old gold standard, and it's still an excellent text (the basic science is more detailed actually), but simply not as accessible.

Agreed. Fitz is a pain in the ass to read, btw -- "in July of 1973 Callen et al had a series of six patients who blah, blah, blah." Over and over and over... Go with Bolognia for the big text, Andrews for the good one volume overview....

So weird... Borders didn't have Bolognia on its website. Anyone else notice this? I had a 40% off coupon burning a hole in my computer screen and ended up purchasing Rooks. I wonder if y'all used the 40% off coupon before I did and bought them out of Bolognia... 🙂

My program is reading through Andrew's this year, already got that one. If we do Bolognia next year will get it then. Hopefully Rooks will be a light read, lol.

Just got my 39 pound Rook's package today! What a beautifully made text book (set). I was really surprised and I think this is what I had been looking for.

The online access is much much lighter. At 9 pt font I can actually read this text on the fly on my BB (over the T-Mobile network), yes it is actually readable! I had to amuse myself and see how it'd work. And it loads relatively quickly. However, in order to spare myself from eye strain (that's for the dermatoscope) I am now thinking of getting something like an iPad or netbook to tote around when on campus.

I'm assuming one can amuse oneself the same sort of way with Blogonia on an iPhone or such to then upgrade to an iPad/netbook w/ WiFi access.

This was just an update. I know some are looking for "e" options. Rook's is a winner at this as well!

Is there an option to download PDFs of the chapters, or is it only online accessible? I am also thinking about getting an iPad to read, and would like to avoid carrying huge texts around.

When in my Rook's account I don't see this as an option. But iPad with an ATT account should let you cruise via the internet and is useful for other things like pubmed and such as well.

How about a good book for a medical student rotation? Should I just get one of the books you guys are discussing, since I'm applying to derm anyway and will use it later? Or is there a nice, more concise version for a 4th year MS you would recommend?

I personally liked this. Not sure why it is no longer on Amazon...

Some other books to look at:
1. Dermatology Secrets
2. Fitzpatrick's Color Atlas and Synopsis of Clinical Dermatology

The SMALL Fitzpatrick's.

I don't see how you can go wrong with some of these! 🙂

Yeah, I was wondering about the Fitz color atlas. I looked through it the other day and thought it was nice, concise, and had enough pictures to hold my attention...

Should have piped in earlier before you spent the $.

No one reads Rooks except for maybe oldtimers in the UK.

Bolognia all the way.

Rooks is a current textbook and is in use overseas among current residents. It is written well.

Bolognia is a strong text as well and there is the ease that everyone else is using it in the US.

Given I am older than probably half of the attendings I have worked with during my intern year I guess I can get away with Rook's. I am also probably about 1/2 Irish (the dudes in my clan who left the germanic region for a better life, back when my name was that of a tribe). One of my chiefs bought it as well. We both think it is supertastic! And no, I am not referring to one of my name-sake's clans chiefs. 🙂

Oh, and the $ will be reimbursed. 😉

But yeah, why so quiet? Where've you been?!?!?!
