THE SOAP 2013 Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I sent an email thank you letter yesterday, never received a reply in return. Wondering if I should email again?

I had one person not answer back either. Don't send another one. It's not over yet. I am willing to almost bet, that tomorrow from 8am to 11:00 am it's going to FRANTIC!!!

I have not head anything for psychiatry. US med student here - did not expect to be in this situation. Ranked 9 places, had several tell me that they ranked me highly, blah blah blah.

🙁

I feel your pain. Went on a rads interview in Jan. About an hour after I get home, I get an invite from the prelim program at that hospital, so I'm thinking "Holy hell, they must've liked me enough to make a phone call!". As I'm done interviewing for the prelim, the interviewer says "We'd really like to have you here". Now I get neither and their rads program has an open spot...All I can hope is they ranked 40 for 4 spots and I would've been 41-50, but seriously, the crap is that?

i take my phone w/me...no joke as crazy it sounds

same here, especially since my first call when I almost walked underground, so spooyky scene #2, then another call came as I was talking and they didn't leave a message and the number was generic when I called back!!!!! Luckily they called back later. We're not going anywhere without the phones!!!

Yup, I take my phone to the bathroom with me. It was there (on the sink) when I showered this AM. What's worse is that the reception sucks here, so I have a microcell in one room. Guess which room I'm confined to for days? 😳

I take my phone with me too! I put it on the countertop so I won't miss a call. I don't want to take any chances.

Hi has anybody heard from East Tennessee State University regarding Internal Medicine categorical OR prelim? I keep checking if they have downloaded my application and it still says No. I'm wondering did anyone else apply to ETSU and had their application downloaded? Thank you

But what if your mid-stream and it goes off.... and assuming its an austin power scene, what do u do then...?? lol

This is such a dilema...

guys just be aware you are not allowed to share program names with the public, stick to state names only.

interesting scenario...if youre midstream, hopefully you can finish before your phone goes to VM - unfortunately you wont have time to wash hands or flush...

the next scenario is if you're having a BM...at that point.. pinch off comfortably ASAP and proceed to conduct interview from toilet-seated position. IF (the slimmest of IFs it's starting to look like now) but IF you land that residency spot, you instantly have the best match story out of all your friends from 2013 - "landed a residency spot from the bowels of the match in SOAP WHILST moving them as well"....

that sirs and ladies, is positive thinking flowering from delirium/frustration. but still, preparation .

im 0/30 too, we're all in the same boat

and to reiterate a previous post..avoid using program names! NRMP jurisdiction extends to the cyber world...

lol! Love it!

Well 1 phone call so far. Guess I'm screwed.

just wanted to say I got a phone interview. Hadn't had any till now. Asked me why I wanted to go into this field and what was my greatest weakness. I will agree with previous post about the amount of applicants. The interviewer appeared rushed because they had many people to call. So I think it is taking them a long time to go through all the applications and then they are calling once finished. So, keep your phones nearby.

I'm a USIMG with
228/230/Pass CS

which are low scores for IMG ive been told

applying for IM categorical, now participating in SOAP. For first round I applied to all the categoricals, and as much IM/Prelim and Trans as I could because I was under impression being in a GME program would make me more competitive for ERAS 2014. But people are saying this is not true?

Is it better to graduate, get ECFMG certified (which opens a few more IM programs) do research at UCLA and apply for internal again with family as backup across the country. Am I wrong in my confidence that I will match somewhere. The pro of this is people say if you rather take Prelim, then you will have difficulty travelling to many interviews.

I am most likely going into SOAP second round and thinking if I should just apply for FM/Med Prelim again, because I do not think IM categorical will be option.

There are always surgical Prelims available, will programs look upon this positively when I apply for IM ERAS 2014, because then I will consider it. But if being in a one year GME program during ERAS 2014 is not going to help, then I should not do that correct

what specialty?

I've gone crazy, I keep switching screens between the NRMP Offer page that says "The next round of offers will be on Match 13 at 12:00pm", the calendar to make sure I didn't miss March 13th and SDN..... neither of us have eaten all day. Sigh

This is the first thing that made me smile since noon yesterday. Thanks!

It seems we're in the same boat too. US IMG; 220/222/P. The kicker is that I failed CK once (and didn't get a passing score back until mid dec.... late in the app process). I applied broadly for IM cat and during SOAP mainly did IM prelim and FM. No luck so far.

I've been doing reading on the side and a lot of people are talking about how a surgical prelim would be almost counterproductive. Just because it is available it might not be the best idea. What are you going to go for after your prelim year and what would it accomplish? I know the feeling that any residency would feel good right now though.

Keep your head up. Im looking at research positions at UCI/USC/UCLA/So Cal too.

Instant I complain, I get a call. (Guess I need to complain more). Anesthesiology program in middle of country (where most the open spots are.) Of course I flub the interview when he asks if I have any questions and I drew a blank as only thing I can think of is that I will take any offer that comes my way. I pretty much said as much. I mean its SOAP. Any applicant at this point thinking he's chosing between programs is someone who fell through the cracks and a wasted high rank for his program or someone as desperate as me and lying through their teeth if they're feigning interest in how a program does for fellowships.

Of course I had bunches of questions for programs when asked back when I was interviewing in the winter and that didn't help me any. Hopefully being a straight shooter is the way to go this time around. Slim hope at this point though. I said I hope they keep me in consideration at the end and he says 'not everyone gets phone calls,' I so wanted to say "no ****!" He did leave me a callback number and his hospital pager.

I feel like I'm alone in this fight (aside from the nice people here who are on the same boat). I'm on a stupid away rotation right now and I hear back at my school and from a friend at another school (in the same city) all the unmatched students are all together with their councilors and associate dean. He doesn't know what is going on because luckily he matched but just hearing that makes me feel so alone. I'm literally at my rental kitchen counter going crazy right now. 2 phonecalls 1 email (without phonecall follow up). Are those of you stalking this forum thread also alone or are you with your respective schools?

I'm totally alone other than my husband trying to prevent me from becoming hysterical. So, at least you have some strangers to relate to 🙂

When the offers go out tomorrow at 12, is it possible to receive multiple offers simultaneously? Or do you have to reject one offer to get the next one?

Alone with a bowl of oatmeals, I'm a non-US, non-canadian FMG. Don't worry you're not alone.

Alone on a rotation in a far off rural city watching TV. Still havent showered out of fear of a missed phone call. Life is good, right?

I don't think there's much harm in being a straight shooter at this point, they want to know if they are wasting their time or not IMO. I had an interview that seemed to go well, then I wrote back and told the PD that if he offered me the position I would 100% take it (this is true, I will take it even if I get five other interviews today).

You see all of the offers at the same time and choose one, from my understanding.

you can get multiple offers. Once you accept one, your NRMP shuts down further actions.

0/30... cant run the temple anymore... monster keeps eating me now... 🙁

Hate to bring up stats... but last year there were about 9000-13000 unmatched people. For this year lets round it off to 10000. Now each send 30 applications, that is about 300000 applications for the seats available. I am not going to thru numbers from NRMP, but it is is close to 500 apps/seat give or take a few. Now going thru that takes time, lot of time. (i think i should put in a clause - these numbers are approximate and do not reflect NRMP...lol)

Now... we all we can do is wait....

The numbers seem a little high. According to the NRMP results from the 2012 publication (page 1) there were 31,355 active applicants (submitted certified ROLs) for 26,772 spots. Only 529 spots went unfilled last year. So that makes the number more like 5,000. Still a lot but better than 10,000.

I have been alone all day. My boyfriend (who matched to his number one spot AOA) is at work and the other friend I have who didn't match is doing this with me via text because he's in Syracuse. It's a mess over here.

"Hiding in my room, safe within my womb, I touch no one and no one touches me."

Gotta love Simon and Garfunkel.

I'm alone too. My wife and kid are out of town. Just listening to music while my cats look at me all confused.

i finished in august, got my diploma in november - US IMG and obviously didn't match. and alone. girlfriend in chicago, at home staring at my computer and looking at the blankness of my phone debating what i can do with 250k in loans and an MD degree since 0 calls and 0 emails = not much hope left.

so take solace while you may be physically alone - you are far from it.
