THE SOAP 2013 Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I haven't gotten an interview since yesterday. You would think at this point, going into thursday, that the programs would start calling people they didn't originally call. at least as a back up.

Well so much for FM not filling. Reality is setting in, time to get a normal job with normal hours and normal pay. How I feel sorry that I won't be able to spend 80 hrs a week working for minimum wage with countless hours of stress and verbal abuse to comfort me while I get little to no sleep admitting patients at 2am, reminds me of Hitler on match day.

Have any IMGs managed to get a spot or any interviews by any chance?

FM filled? wow.... wonder when that happened last time?

It's not over yet!!!!

Since it's looking more and more like many people won't match, wtf do we do now?

I am just very curious why this year is so different that specialties that usually go unfilled are now in such demand. Have the minimum criteria to secure a primary care specialty increased. Can you guys share your stats and what specialty you applied for in the main match. Thank you.
I wish you all the best of luck and don't lose hope!!!

Got my spot. Thank God. Almost makes me want to believe in God actually. Just kidding. I would never believe in talking snakes and mythical beings. Anyway, my take on the situation:

The key is to making the PD believe that you want his/her spot and only his/her spot without seeming like a delusional/desperate junkie. Somehow they need to know that you would love to work at their program in their location. Above all don't seem desperate. It is a red flag. Be confident and express your interest in going to their program. I was about to go fracking nuts, but I kept it together and ended up with a spot. I believe all of you can do the same. Do whatever you need to do to get in the right state of mind before a phone interview or any type of email correspondence.

The stress of the SOAP is nuts. It gets dragged out b/c they can only offer one position, per person, per round without preference lists. It would be much better if it would go down a program's list after a rejection.

Best of luck to you all. And remember, this is not the end of the world. You are smart/capable and if someone doesn't recognize that now, they will eventually with your perseverance.

This may have been answered previously, but programs listed as 'not participating in SOAP' with empty spots, are they just committed to leaving those spots open? Or can we contact these programs after Friday?

Yes, you can get in contact with those places after 5:00 on Friday.

Congrats!!!!!!!!!!!!! I guess you got the offer at 5pm and what specialty

congratulations! so I'm assuming you got an offer during the last round?

Ich mochte der besten artze geworden, aber der scheiBe match und der SOAP... ugh, mir arbeiten sind der himmel gehen.

What tiny ass percent of the population knows german? Its pretty damn awesome that ya'll are sitting here typing german, which is obviously a difficult language to learn. yet you still haven't matched. This is absurd to say the least.

1/4 places that had contacted me have any spots left, haven't heard anything from any round 2 applications. There is like nothing left prelim wise this is ridiculous, even the surgery spots are dwindling. I guess I will have to try to get a DO TRI on Monday. I am thankful I still have that avenue. It is amazing how many people are willing to lie to you and talk you up in this process.

Congrats to everyone who got a position, hang in there everyone else.

They all told me to take Spanish. Hah.

whoa there... I matched fyi.... and there is no harm in people releasing their stress somehow. Nothing more to do now until 9am, we might as well type in random languages we know!

just wanted to say to everyone that SOAP'd, things will work out fine as long as you keep at it....trust me, try and step back and look at the big picture...

of my total 40 apps sent out....only 14 programs still have spots left...mostly prelim GS...how's everyone else looking on this front?

I think he was complimenting us on our abilities rather than making derogatory statements.

Unless you're playing the game too, I think they meant it as "I can't believe such obviously intelligent ppl have to be put in this situation."

I think it was meant in a "good" way.

ive been thinking about this a lot today and mulling over the idea of locking into a program that I initially did not want to be in, but just want to have a job next year... as well as the hassles of trying to switch programs ... maybe just better to re-apply 2014

Yeah, I practiced medicine for a year but it just wasn't the right fit for me 😀

Honestly Guys I really appreciate all the comments in this thread I started. Initially I felt depressed and despondent about not receiving any calls or emails but after seeing that there are many in the same boat as me I felt much better about it. I also think that we all be ok in the end. I know a doctor that I shadowed who did medical school in germany then a general surgery and ent residency. He then came to the us and did a year of ob and then switched to psych at the end. I guess when I was thinking about it today I thought it's not the end of the world for me.

I am sorry I am always asking this question but are people on this site still receiving interviews

difference between submitting 10 apps at 5pm vs 630 pm?

what about any calls yet for second round

are they supposed to happen tonight

if offers are at 9 am

i dont understand

and then it keeps going

so we expect calls any time?

is anybody getting offers without calls

DID internal, prelim and trans for first 30, no calls
did 9 family plus one more prelim for second round, cus it looked like some family dont take IMGs in past 3 years, so decided not to apply, mistake?

USIMG, 228.98/230/pass CK, all first attempt, 7 IV
nada in soap thus far

I appreciate your concern, but my experience tells me that PDs don't care. They don't want a liability. If you have a red flag of any kind = game over, no matter who you are.

The old thread of my demise, in case anyone is interested:
http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=892050

Sorry to hear about your situation.

I think people don't consider enough about the malignancy of a program. I gave it a lot of weight in my ranking because I was terrified of finding myself in your shoes. Once you get fired from residency, it's extremely difficult to get any future spots in any field. It's unfortunate how our system is set up.

USIMG/ 225(95)/226/ CS pass 2nd attempt(reason why i am here i think in this situation) 3 IV
0 out 37 right now for soaping. I gave up and am planning my next year already.
Already did 4 mo research, 2 mo observership so far since last june when i graduated.

oh... my bad... must of read it too fast and I'm in "defend the SOAPers" mode

again, my bad

DID internal, prelim and trans for first 30, no calls

people have reported getting offers without calls here on this thread, and also a friend of mine got one without a call one hour after applying in the second round. Still have about 5 friends that I know are soaping and suspecting more that are hidding.

fwiw, I have a colleague from my same school (with very different circumstances than mine) who hasn't gotten a single call. He's at the school with an adviser and so far nothing.

difference between submitting 10 apps at 5pm vs 630 pm?

Unfortunately, I don't think anyone knows. By now you've made your decision anyway. If you're going to submit more apps at 5PM, you certainly should wait until you get the updated list from round 2

what about any calls yet for second round

are they supposed to happen tonight

if offers are at 9 am

Yes, programs that still have slots may call tonight to interview more people. Or, if they have already interviewed a bunch who have not yet matched, they may stick with their current list.

However, last year 75% of the spots were filled by the end of day 1, and the next 15% filled in day 2, and the last 10% never filled (presumably because the program decided not to use SOAP). Assuming that the statistics are similar this year, the majority of spots are gone -- so unfortunately the chances of getting more calls at this point is probably low.

i dont understand

and then it keeps going

so we expect calls any time?

Yes. And there are multiple rounds tomorrow and the next day. But last year's statistics showed that after the 3rd round (i.e. tomorrow morning), there was minimal further positions in SOAP. Still, I would remain available as you never know.

is anybody getting offers without calls

Several people have posted that has happened, mostly in Prelim GS.

Have any IMGs managed to get a spot or any interviews by any chance?

i had one on the second day (prelim IM) - was told to call between a certain time. i only spoke to the receptionist, and could barely make out what she was saying with all the mayhem in the office. guessing they sent that email out to the entire list as an attempt to cut numbers...

Thanks God,

🙄 The 'Thank God" was probably tongue-in-cheek. In any case, it has become such a common expression that anyone can say it without meaning to invoke your imaginary friend in the sky.

Going back to the question about reapplying to places that you didn't get an interview before. I didn't match into radiology so I had to soap. 4/5 of the programs that contacted me for an interview was those that I applied before. I ended up getting a spot in a program that I originally applied to and didn't get an interview!

Regardless, I made it! 🙂

Wow it is amazing that you were good enough to get ACGME anesthesiology and can't find a prelim surg anywhere. I guess the anti DO surgery bias extends to prelim spots as well. Why not try getting a DO TRI right now. very unlikely that the NRMP will find out and even if they do, what can they do about it ?

The dark side of not matching: you spent an enormous part of your life and a substantial amount of money working on a skill that you can't use. 🙁

The bright side of not matching: you will get to enjoy your weekends and the rest of your life for at least the next few years not working as a hospital slave for 80+ hrs a week with little to no sleep having to put up with verbal abuse from patients, residents, and attendings. 🙂
