Hello people!

Does anyone know if its possible to still take courses in the summer semester, before going to optometry school in the same year, in the fall?

Would the schools still want my transcripts for that summer semester? If so, wouldn't that be too late, as classes start in late august, which is when I will be done with school?

Has anybody done this before, or know of anyone who has?

It isn't absolutely crucial for me to get in within the next year or so, but I just don't want to waste time + money for an impossible app (due to timing constraints).

I await your thoughts, fellow SDN'ers!

(btw, I am a long time lurker, and finally decided to post!)

Are you referring to prerequisite courses? Major courses?

Hi mintyjulep,

None of the courses will be pre-requsite courses, but 1 or 2 MIGHT be major courses. (since i might not be able to take them during fall/spring due to timing conflicts blah)

That's a really cool username!

Haha, thanks. 🙂 MintJulep was already taken! 😡

If I'm not mistaken, I think most optometry schools require that all courses taken towards your major are completed by the Spring semester before Fall semester of your first year of opto school (in other words, summer courses may be too late). They want your degree to be completed in time for the end of the Spring semester. This may vary from school to school, so I would personally check the admission requirements for the schools to which you wish to apply. Good luck!

So if I am doing a major in bio, the schools want all my bio courses completed by spring. But can I still take other courses (to actually complete my degree - electives if you will) in the summer semester?

I know I should call the schools, but it's embarrassing! 🙁

Don't be embarrassed! We all have questions, and there are people on staff that are there to answer them. Plus, it can't hurt to get the hang of talking with optometry schools so that you feel a little more comfortable on interview day. As much as I dislike making phone calls, I will say that calling all those schools for the past 6 months has made me a lot more confident on the phone =P

yes, but at the same time, don't bother the admissions comittee. Some of them are very friendly, yet other counselors seemed to be bothered by ppl checking up on the file's. If you have a specific question though, that should be fine.

i think, also it depends on whether your school requires a Bachelors degree or not, and then if you have it completed or not.

I took classes the summer before school started, and I just came with my new transcripts in hand, and gave them to the correct people as soon as I got to school. I finished classes 3 weeks before OD school started...eek...too stressful for me. I wouldn't have done that again. Its a lot to just up and move.

in the end, it didnt matter much, because I had already been accepted, and my GPA was good enough that I qualified with or without those grades.

I would assume that if your school is counting that you are coming with your bachelors already, when in reality you did not earn it...that there would be some red flags and maybe some extra red tape to get through.

i would suggest calling admissions regardless.

afterall, you are now a 'paying customer'

you should expect that they would take the time for you
