Add another $75 to "this-is-the-pile-of-money-I-have-spent-trying-to-get-into-medical-school-pile." I just bought a garment bag to carry my suit in.

I am really getting tired of these hidden expenses. 😡

tell me about it. i just dropped 3 grand on sony xray vision goggles and a hover board for my next interview. its really starting to add up!

I already have xray vision goggles, but my hoverboard needs a tune up.

Just think how lucky we'll be if we get in...laptop, PDA, deposit for apartment...

I hope it was a fancy designer garment bag.

Nothing but the best 🙄 This thing is my only piece of carry-on luggage that I have! I used to have one of those wheelie ones, but it fell apart. I was thinking about stuffing everything into my pack, but I decided against it.

$75?? you could have gotten one much cheaper if you didn't want to spend the money. i already had one so it's not an issue for me.

I'm all about Wal-Mart!

I went to Target and bought this $50 suit bag. And I only used it like twice. I started getting tired of it cause it was too heavy for me to carry. Now i just carry my suit in a drycleaning bag or shove it in my suitcase. What a waste of $$. The stupid thing just sits in my floor now.

If you want to be really cheap...I found a travel iron for $15 and a surprising number of airport bathrooms have power outlets. Then you just cram your suit in your backpack.

Apparently it's "stupid" to iron your suit...according to my mother. But it works in a pinch.

I bought a travel steamer for about $20 at Wal Mart, bought a suitcase for $20 and i just put everything in the suitcase! 😀

Wow, I guess I'm rich. I have a playstation 2 and everything.

I went to target, they had three versions, one POS for $24, one decent for $50, and one nice one for $70. I eliminated the first one because I want to keep this thing for a while. It was then between the $50 or the $70.

I then went to the outlet mall and found a pretty nice one for the same price.

For twenty extra bucks I bought the nice one and I am glad I did. I got a lifetime warranty on this biotch.

PS2? The last gaming system I owned was a original Nintendo with duckhunt and Mario Bros. Although now that the new Goldeneye game has come out, I'm thinking I might need to make a solid investment in my medical school career and buy one.

I'm terrified to actually see all of the application fees, airline tickets, hotels, taxis, food, interview clothes, and all the other stuff I'm forgetting. :scared:

oh, now I feel jipped. I got mine for $25. Dang.

I bought a garment bag at Target for like $30. It's not that great (which I should have known). My suit still gets somewhat wrinkled in it and it doesn't even have that many pockets. I wish I had spent more money on a better one.
If you look at the big picture, the cost of the application process is only minimal compared to the cost of the medical education.

You sold me. I went to my first interview with a carry-on + a suit-bag + a purse-bag, and it made travelling that much more unpleasant. I have doubts that all my stuff will fit into a garment bag, however.

I wasn't trying to sell anything, but I will gladly take credit. I am happy with it. I put a bunch of stuff in it tonight just to make sure it fits. Everything worked great. I would do it all over again. Now all I have to do is carry this bag with me. I can fit my books and laptop in on of the pockets. I am ready for my interviews, if only the schools realized this and sent me my invitation.

Hmm, are you planning to bring your bag as a carry-on? I just looked up Delta's carry-on information, and they say carry-ons should fit in their size-wise unit, approx 22" x 14" x 9". The garment bag looks like it would exceed those dimensions by about 5" when folded up. I want to get one of those garment bag w/ wheelies, but I would want to bring it as a carry-on.

Good luck at your first interview! 🙂 :luck:

a lot of suitcases have garment bags inside of them and cost about 60-80 dollars if you get them at discount stores, like costco or marshalls or something. you can get good brands, too. if you put your suit in the garment bag that comes with the suitcase, then you can put everything in your suitcase, leave the steamer at home, and even "carry-on" the suitcase.

you can also carry on your garmet bag and actually hang it (not stuff it) in a closet on the plane. it really should not get wrinkled.

I asked the lady at the store about this. She told me that the garment bags on wheels will NOT be allowed to be carried on. They all exceed the maximum size. That is the reason I purchased this one. I hate waiting in line to check baggage, and then waiting in line at the baggage line after waiting in line in the plane. (wow) My interview trips are short, and I can carry about three or four days of clothes in this thing.

I don't know about Delta, (I don't fly delta, I hate their bitchy pilots. Did you know that most of thos guys make around $200 000 a year, while most other commercial pilots make around $100 000. I will cut them some slack because they agreed to a fairly large pay cut to keep their jobs, but they bitched about for a while!)

I flew last weekend, and I saw many people carrying on bags of the same size. I am confident that I will be able to carry it on, but I will let you know. I fly out on Monday for its first maiden voyage.

I asked about this, and it turns out that very few airplane have this. They all used to have it, but modern planes have gotten rid of this "closet" because they wanted the space. Moral of the story, don't expect every plane to have this feature.

i've seen a garment closet in some planes on my interview trips - i didn't ask to put my suit there, because mine has never gotten wrinkled, but from what i saw it seemed that only the first class passengers could hang stuff in the closet.

First of all, LOL. Very clever.

Second, I'll trade my Univ. of Texas - San Antonio interview for your Vandy interview...no matter how soon it is (sounds fair).

jk

What else you got? I have a UT-San Antonio interview. Come on, pony up!

What scares me more is the actual cost of attending a medical school. 50,000 x 4 years.

Don't you wish you lived in Texas, $7, 000 X4 = 30K
Living of say 10K a year puts four years of education at $70, 000 total!

😎

On my first interview, I brought a carry-on, a purse bag, and a suit bag, and they (the Delta people) were able to hang my suit in either the garment closet or the first-class cabin. Going and coming back, I was on four different flights, and I got them to hang my suit on each plane. My suit was beautiful when I got to the interview, but I did not enjoy lugging around all that stuff. So I've decided to consolidate. 🙂 I think I'm going to go with one of those carry-on suitcases that have a suiter compartment and a bag strap (for my purse bag), and I'm going to bring a steam iron, just in case.

I can't imagine not being able to wheel my stuff around, because I'm weak.

Good luck & let me know how your Vandy interview goes. 😉

This is what I'm going to do, thanks. But I'm still going to bring the steamer, because it looks like I'll have to fold my suit 2-3 times to get it into the suiter compartment.
