Everyone should remember that stats aren't everything. UCSF was the one school I interviewed at that I really felt looked at the ENTIRE package. Honestly, you need to have it all: grades, rec letters, essays, passion/knowledge about the profession, etc. It's all about being well-rounded and being future leaders in the profession - which isn't for everyone regardless of your stats. Check out the thread us P1's started earlier, "Questions about UCSF?" Some P3's and P4's have also chimed in and their advice might be helpful for those of you who received interview invites. Good luck 🙂
I actually got the interview letter myself on Wednesday and I'm still shocked that I got the letter.
Before I even started applying, I talked to the director at OSACA and said that I had to show my seriousness in applying, by retaking courses that I did poorly in, taking other courses that will help me along, and just really trying to understand what it means to be a pharmacist (good thing I have hella friends who are pharm students and pharmacists, so they can tell me what's going on, and I incorporated a conversation that I had with a friend who's a pharmacist into my PharmCAS essay).
Even though my cumulative science GPA was below 3.0, my postbac GPA was a 3.7, even though I've been working 50+ hours a week. I've done a lot of different things to show my seriousness, which being older, I've had the chance to do, like being on the board of directors for a couple of nonprofit organizations, volunteering at a pharmacy for over a year, etc.
I didn't even apply until I knew I was ready and this is what I wanted, and it shows in my applications. A friend of mine applied three times and didn't change too much in her application, and didn't retake the courses that she did poorly in, and she got rejected, even though her application was really well done.
I think that if you want to be seriously considered for UCSF, you have to show some really strong leadership ability, a good working knowledge of what a pharmacist does, and most importantly, show some passion as to why you want to be a pharmacist.
Good luck to everyone who made it this far--anyone being interviewed on 2/7?
