Not quite. As more and more of us become employees the main driving factor for our salaries will be demand (i.e the hospital needs someone to cover those 5 hour Medicare/Medicaid vascular case ) if the demand dries up ( less futile and wasteful cases)there will suddenly be a lot of people who have your skillset and knowledge base without jobs and willing to do yours for alot less....

Not to mention, a few days of lost profits from one plant owned by a multi billion dollar company....how will they survive

Well Get over it. Like it or not most of the GOP states (most, not all) are to going to reopen in the next 2-3 weeks. You can shelter in home in fear. The rest of us are going to get on with our lives with the "new" norm. There will be restrictions in place. Fortunately, we have GOP Governors who recognize there will always be risk with Covid 19 this year. That said, some areas, if not most, can safely re-open in 2-3 weeks. For those who live in areas where the opening does occur you can shelter in place for another 4-6 weeks or find another place to live.

Many hospitals have just a few Covid + patients right now. They may have 1-2 or ZERO Covid + patients in the ICU. Those communities have already seen a flattened curve and can safely re-open. Out of precaution most Governors are going to wait another 1-3 weeks.

His base will find a rationalization for this, despite experts saying repeatedly that even the China travel ban was a bad idea. The only point I see is for economic reasons, but legal immigrants are a drop in the current ocean of unemployment. He's using the virus as a pretext for more electoral propaganda, and to change the subject from the failures of the federal government.

If anything, now is the time to scoop up the best foreign brains. There is no reason to suspend the categories based on personal merit.

Thankfully I don’t live in a GOP state.
 
Since the Spanish flu of 2018 had 3 different peaks over 3 years, it's clear that many more Americans will die from this. Since we are far from being able to test for Covid on a national scale, and we dont yet have effective treatments or vaccines, its clear that we must learn to live with this virus until we are able to test to scale, have a vaccine, and more importantly effective treatment against the virus. One thing for sure, we must generate some economic recovery. People are going to lose family businesses, others financially ruined from unemployment. Hospitals will need to get back to treating urgent then elective cases. My wife's groups volume is down about 70%. Hospitals cant take care of sick people if they are broke. Thoughtful re opening in stages while protecting the vulnerable looks like the best we can do at the moment. We may see a spike in cases but should be able to handle that now that we have increased capacity and PPE. Frankly, I dont have a lot of confidence in the experts predictions since there are so many and so few have been correct. 2.5 million deaths, masks dont help, etc...
We will have to figure this out as we go.

How is no one talking about the financial cost of deaths? What about families who depend on grandparents to watch children? What about the loss of advice and mentorship from those who know us best? What percentage of elective surgeries are performed on adults >65yo? How about the probable increase in single parent poor households who now have no grandparents to assist in childcare? What about the economic burden of poverty? How is it we are willing to accept death for herd immunity and willingly perform futile operations? There is a cost that balances the economic losses. If we are not careful we may suffer both.

What about the combined cost of starting economic shut down then opening before we have the medical capabilities to appropriately fight the pandemic? What happens to our economy if we dump what cash is left into services that aren’t used by the public? How many people are going to visit the Olive Garden that had a positive case a week ago? What’s the NBA ticket revenue going to be?

We already committed to a shut down, why are we in such a hurry to sabotage our own efforts? We clearly don’t have a plan for reopening, don’t have publicly available masks, only have testing tied closely to medical ventures, built no infrastructure for tracking cases, we have no robust system to alert individuals of of exposure. Yet here we are 4 weeks into a partial shut down (China did 8) complaining about how things have to reopen next week. If the virus didn’t wreck the economy, some other disaster would have. Or were you expecting DOW J > 40,000? The damage is done, the seed is sowed, life will never be what it was. We must look for new opportunity or we will continue to do the same thing, yet expect a different result.

It's the first quarter of the big game and you wanna toss up a hail mary? I'd like to be pimps from Oakland or cowboys from Arizona but it's not Halloween. Grow up, Peter Pan! Count Chocula!

I said it before, the people in this country are nowhere near as relentless as this virus. We're seeing that now already. We don't have what it takes. This is a country that wants the easy way out of everything. The easiest path possible. And also a country that needs to learn everything the hard way.

you or someone you love may die, because "the man" wants you to go back to work and save the economy.
your bravery as you go to work, to flip burgers for minimum wage, or push propofol for admittedly a fair bit more - will line the coffers and soften the economic blow not just to the USA, but for the whole world.

so while we shelter in place and socially distance, and aim to save our own lives, and the lives of our loved ones - thank you.

For better or worse we are an economy built on debt. That debt has to be serviced. People have to pay rent/mortgage and buy food. What do you suggest? That the government just pickes up the tab for everyone’s mortgage? Where will this money come from? Just print it? Look at Venezuela. When a currency becomes worthless there is no incentive to produce. Then you have shortages of basic food and medicine, rampant crime, social unrest etc. when all is said and done coronavirus will probably kill far less than one percent of the population the majority of which were not going to live that long anyways. Everyone likes to focus on the young victims but the numbers are bearing out that the Average coronavirus death is close to 80 years old. Quite a few were in the nursing home to begin with. I just don’t see the net benefit in this.

Shelter in place. Protect your self. More power to you. Others may (sensibly) judge the risk of their personal harm from coronavirus not great enough to justify economic devastation and what amounts to house arrest orders. Whatever happened to “my body my choice”....😉

No offense, but some of these GOP governors are amongst the dumbest people when it comes to understanding anything about this disease. It's also a bit foolish to point out that because strategies to stay at home have actually worked and flattened the curve that now those places can safely reopen. I mean that might be like dumping gas on a smoldering fire that was under control. If they think it is safe to reopen, they also need to acknowledge that they might need to put even more draconian measures in place for 1-2 months again in another 2 weeks if it starts taking off.

A vaccine is, best case, 1 year away (and I'll believe that when I see it). We can't have the majority of the country shut down for a year.

Afaik, no one is advocating for staying closed for a year. Mostly just advocating against the protesting idiots who want to fully open tomorrow.

That is how I feel too. We already bit the bullet and locked down. Lets just keep at it and make sure we are DONE DONE with this ish. The damage is already done. When I come out I want it to be OVER FOR REAL
 
I don't understand why the hurry to reopen nonessential businesses. The lockdown is a good measure to slow the spread of Covid-19 AND to prevent it from infecting high-risk population. Asian countries like Malaysia and Vietnam seemed to have decent success in controlling Covid-19 outbreaks by implementing strict lockdown measures. The recent numbers from Italy and Spain also suggest that lockdowns are working there as well.
You need a good alternative plan in order for the lockdown to be lifted safely. Rapidly expanding the availability of Covid-19 testing is a good starting point (something South Korea has opted for). In my opinion, the mass testing and tracing strategy is what you should push for if you really want the lockdown to end, instead of pushing for reopening the economy too early without any good plan. While some may have suggested Swedish's approach, I don't think it'd work in the US. Even if it does work in Sweden (the numbers suggest it doesn't), the results cannot be generalized to US' case because of the huge difference in healthcare systems.

Did you not see the litany of posts above decrying the idiocy of the GOP governors who are starting to reopen?

I can't speak to other states, but here in SC we're doing about what Newsom is suggesting. Our total cases are trending down. We're opening in stages - and the reopening yesterday/today still has restrictions on the number of people allowed in stores. Our hospitals still have plenty of capacity (my 1100 bed hospital system had 20 COVID patients as of 4pm yesterday) and at least in my area we have plenty of PPE.

Intermittent shutdowns with social distancing measures in between that are targeted based on hospital volume in the region. Basically regional economic blackouts/brownouts as the disease picks up

Well, I surely wouldn't want to hurt the feelings of the somewhat competent GOP governors so here's a diagram I think is fair

Last week there were 7 states still without stay at home orders, some of which possibly hadn't peaked in cases, and all 7 were exclusively led by GOP governors. I really can't understand where your defensiveness is coming from since there is a small signal coming exclusively from one side.

Because it is too early for a national restart. The earliest point at which we would have an optimal result would be around mid-May per most models I'd reviewed. Any earlier than that and we will likely have a repeat wave that is worse than the initial wave. It's not the method, it's the timing.

Not sure anyone (outside some of the stupider protesters) is calling for a national restart.

But I think there probably are states where its reasonable to try a gradual re-opening.

That I can agree with. The trouble is that even in these states governors and protestors are pushing for no-holds bar, balls to the wall, massage parlors and gyms, beaches and sporting events levels of reopening.

Because for better or worse, some of our colleagues here are lumped all GOP states together when there's a pretty big variation among the states.

Just out of curiosity, who all is overseeing SC's plan? Was the following the consensus of a joint panel that actually included physicians, epidemiologists, and public health experts?

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster issued a new executive order which allows the reopening of some retails stores.

He also removed restrictions on public access points to the state’s beaches, public piers, docks, and wharfs, while delegating to local officials the authority to restrict access, as they see fit.

  • Beaches can reopen at noon Tuesday, if local officials want to open them. Up to local officials.

  • Some nonessential stores can reopen, including department stores, flea markets, florists, bookstores and music shops. Must use social distancing.
  • Occupancy in each store will be limited to five customers per 1,000 square feet of retail space or 20% occupancy, whichever is less.

  • DHEC update: 64 new cases, 4,439 people in SC have tested positive in the state.
