I used to think that medical school admissions were different than undergaduate. I used to think that GPA, MCAT scores, leadership, and research were all that mattered, and only the best got into the best. I was wrong 😱. I'm a senior at a top 50 undergrad and I really want everyone in this forum to finally realize what admissions committees are really about. Here are three friends (real-life situations, no BS here):

1) Male, very close friend, attends George Washington Univ. Three A-'s in science courses so his GPA must be around a 3.96 or 3.97...anyway I know his MCAT is straight up a 30 (unbalanced though). His only research was one semester through a course he took. A little shadowing here and there, but really nothing else. He spent a lot of time studying. Oh may I mention he is like 1/8 Hispanic. Bottomline: Just interviewed and has been accepted to four of the top ten US News Med schools and may I mention he turned in his apps late.

2) Female, William and Mary College. Beautiful, smart, perfect personality, but she is a ORM. GPA: north of 3.9 and MCAT of 35 (we studied together). She is published, has more leadership than most of us can fathom, and participated in athletics. She freakin won a nationally recognized scholarship. Bottomline: she got an interview at Yale and Mayo Clinic, but nothing from any other school (JHU, Harv, UPenn, Dartmouth, NYU, UM).

3) Best friend in Highschool and Valedictorian of HS. Attends Yale. He got a B in physics and B+ in physics II. His GPA blows like a 3.6 before last semester, and surprisingly he only pulled a 34 on the MCAT (I was expecting this kid to hit the 40s). No pubs, but he did do 2 years of research and went to some country with an international group they have there. His grandparents came here from Sudan😉. Bottomline: He is attending Hopkins next year although UMich already hit up the early interview and scholarship BS they do (bunch of other acceptances too).

So here is what I am trying to say. ECs are great, do them and have fun while doing them. However, please realize that the best EC you can ever have is one you don't even do, one you can only possess by genetic inheritence, your ethnicity. Being a URM is like winning the Truman, hitting a 40 on the MCAT, and volunteering in 5 countries simultaneously.
Our system truly makes no sense.

Oh, and if you think undergrad doesn't matter, please think again. Name recognition matters, but the applicants coming from YPH deserve to be there in the first place bc. they beat everyone out in undergrad applications to begin with.

Finally, this isn't meant to be comprehensive and many of you will succeed in getting an MD at the institution of your choice, just please do not be naive about the process or hate on your fellow URM friends or those at a top 5 university when they get interviews you wanted to get.

lolwut?

This is a very disjointed explanation that renders down to "Do ECs because you want to and not because you want to beef your application."

Michigan has not given any scholarships this year, believe me. They haven't even met about this, so I have no idea what your friend is talking about.

Whenever stuff really seems to go wrong/right at multiple schools for someone, beyond what seems normal, it's probably LOR or PS, stuff that no one but the adcoms see.

Does anyone know what he was trying to say? Something about URM and snorting coke off the adcom's desk during the interview with the adcom.

small sample size. fail.

The second person could've just interviewed really badly. I know of a few people who had superb stats and ECs and did not get accepted anywhere because they had huge egos and it showed in their PS and interview.

URM helps. Everyone knows this. Even AAMC has charts with higher percentages of acceptances for these individuals when they clearly have lower stats.

Pointless thread.

(White Male FTL. 😛 )

What the hell is the point of this thread?

Something about a one-post wonder ranting on how adcoms will bend over to have URMs in their schools.

In a larger perspective, these URM special cases might take up maybe 4-5 seats at the school you want to go to. But, if you seriously cannot put together application that gets you at least one acceptance at one of the 120 med schools in the states, then you only have yourself to blame. Advice: quit worrying about others and focus on yourself.

the asian invasion versus URM versus bland White Man in the quest to get into Ivy League medical schools.

forgive me if i forgot any extremely stereotypical races/nationalities/ethnicites/colours/whatever you want to call them

If two people have the exact same stats/EC's/PS/interview (basically everythign is the same), and the med school can only pick ONE... one is white and one is asian, who will get in?

Wow, well if you want to make a solid point at least be cohesive in your speech. You seem like you started off with one theme at the beginning and then everything fell apart at the end...

what exactly are you trying to say?

If you're trying to thwart off "haters"... don't waste anymore of your time. There will ALWAYS be people like that and this thread is not going to stop them. It's sad, I know.

My family history isn't documented through genealogy or anything. I wonder if I could lie about being 1/64th black or something.

Yeah I'm sure they'll launch a full blown lineage investigation on me. LOL.

If you walk in as a white kid claiming to be african american, they'll be a little suspicious. Sure, you can be from South Africa, but what injustices have you faced when you look like a white male (assuming you do)? Try and get into medical school on your own merit, there's no need to game the system. Once you get in, you can live proud knowing that you got in on your own accomplishments. 👍

Jesus christ not you again. I thought they banned your ass. OP has had multiple posts and addresses the same argument again and again and again. STOP CRYING!

Every time I see one of these threads crying about URM I think the same thing:

If you spent less time crying about other people and more time strengthening your own application, you'll have nothing to worry about.

yep, the only reason i can dream to have any acceptances at all is because i'm a URM. it's clearly not because i've worked hard for them or anything ridiculous like that.

but i'll just take comfort in knowing that i'm single-handedly stealing all of your spots at medical schools with the three magic letters on my application.

oh, that's so good to hear!!!! looks like all that hard work was for nothing.. good thing im a minority.. looks like im guaranteed a spot in med school!!! :soexcited: :highfive::clap:

OP... stop crying about it. in case u haven't realized, white/caucasians are still leading as the highest % of applicants being accepted.. -.- assuming you are white/caucasian.. but your username might indicate otherwise :3 this thread is pointless...... lol.

SDN has the knack of banning people for speaking out against touchy-feely topics URM/DO...

😛 But thats only my guess! After all, I wont know because

there is a severe lack of transparency on why they ban people, despite how the new and extremely respected President Obama does things😉!

i was under the impression that they banned people who violated the user terms of service.

They've come and talked about this repeatedly. If I recall, you are definitely not allowed to create an account with the explicit intent of creating inflammatory posts--which anyone with a brain will recognize this is. I get so tired of reading these and all the Ivy vs non-ivy & MD vs DO but I'm pretty sure this one is the most ridiculous. Just blatant racism all over the place half the time. It's kind of shameful really.

In my mind, I don't think the OP should have been banned. This is supposed to be a website on which students can have discourse on the issues surrounding medicine and medical school admissions, even if it is politically correct here.

It's no surprise to anyone that being a URM gives you a sizable advantage in medical school admissions. By simply having the color of someone's skin/their ethnic background give them an advantage over others is racism...it's just not the type of racism that we are allowed to discuss on this website.

Perhaps I'm giving too much credit to the OP, but maybe he feels slighted not because URM's have an advantage, but because others have a disadvantage (since medical school spots are fixed, making this application process a zero-sum game).

No one should be implying that every URM was accepted without hard work. Similarly, no one should deny that there are many ORMs who are rejected every year, despite working equally as hard.

Anyway, this thread ought to be closed...it seems that the application year is winding down, and the "new" crop are popping up threads with detailed questions about AMCAS ECs...lol I remember those days, it was only a few months ago!

The thing that always kills me about this argument is that it makes NO SENSE. I mean, just look at the make up of any medical school class. It's a good day if you find a med school class of 150+ that even has 12 black/hispanic/native americans in it. The fact of the matter is that if this "advantage" were as pervasive as you imagine it to be, then EVERY med school class would be 100% URM.

Also, just face it. As much as you don't want to admit it, URMs are AS SMART as you are. A lot of them probably scored higher on the MCAT than you, probably got better grades than you, and had better LORs. So as much as you don't want to admit that the URM sitting next to you is not being thrown a bone and actually earned their spot, deal with it. We are about to go into medicine, a highly collaborative field. If you're already starting to create divisions between yourself and your future colleagues, then your career is troubled before it has even begun. Not to mention, your patients will suffer.

Okay I think we should end this topic, just like johncalvin said. I think there are valid points on both sides of this argument and it is useless to continue it.

But just to set the record straight, efg... by saying a lie out loud doesn't turn it into the truth. Check any stats on the AMCAS website and you'll see that you're definitely mistaken.

Great advice.

Reality: The URM also spent less time crying about other people and strengthening their own application.

Bottom line: You don't become a doctor.

I'd love to see those statistics. Even so, I wonder how much selection bias is inherent in the stats considering they rely on self identification and allow people to choose whether they want to release their scores and information to be used as part of the aggregate data.

This whole conversation is sad to me not because of numbers or who is getting interviews etc. It's sad because it represents the thoughts of our nation's future doctors. Eventually you will become a doctor and you will definitely have patients that are URMs and colleagues that are URMs. How will you treat them? These posts are very telling.
