hey guys,

I heard some of you recommend taking Gen Chem, Bio, and Orgo over. However, I am confused because dental schools count both the repeated course grade and original course grade. Is it worth it to repeat these classes? Or is it better just to go into a graduate program?

All depends on what you got in those classes, and what the school says. I got a C in bio I, D in gen chem II, and D in orgo II. Needless to say I retook all of those and got A's except for orgo II. So a D MUST be retaken, but a C is not that crucial unless you got mostly C's. So ask an admissions advisor what you should do based on your personal situation.

How's everybody doing? After 2 yrs of postbacc at UMB with GPA of 3.9ish. I managed to pull up my overall GPA to around 2.8ish.

Hey Blankguy, forgot you were in this club. I just got finished with my informal post-bacc. 61 credit hrs. of 4.0 that pulled my cum gpa up to a 3.0 and my sci gpa up to a 2.9. Just took the DAT and got 23TS/21AA/20PAT. I'm applying to ten schools...hopefully I can get in and provide some inspiration to everyone like YahE and others have. 🙂

What is an informal post bacc?

Taking courses a la carte. Not officially enrolled in a postbacc program but taking the necessary courses.

I have about 40 credit hours including some unrelated courses. I don't think my science GPA is going to be as good as yours. I am looking toward taking more courses beyond the basic requirements, fortunately I didn't take any Bio courses beyond the intro previously.

So what kinds of courses would those include? Just science courses or possibly repeating the pre-reqs?

ok so i totally belong to this club, cuz im around a 2.6 or 2.7 on my transcripts so god only knows wat itll be on the dental app. But Im planning to send out my apps at the end of August after I take my DATs again. I didn't do that badly my first time (A19 and PAT17) but i think considering my GPA I need to do at least above a 20. So my question was, even if I get a 20 or above, do u think its worth it to apply this late in the game considering my gpa?

The predent requirements Gen Chem, Organic, Physics, and Biology. If they have been taken a while ago then they will be repeated.

I would say do waste your time and money. You never know. But at the same time, spend this coming year raising your gpa.

Go you. The Admissions Committee will definitely see that you're committed AND Smart (cuz u have a 3.9)! BTW, do u mean UMB - UMass Boston?

Yup UMass-Boston. A lot of people don't know that UMass has a Boston campus

Okay guys, up till now I haven't posted any messages on this thread because I didn't have my GPA calculated. Now that it's official, here is my GPA as calculated by AADSAS. I've already applied to thirteen schools. Do I stand a chance this year?

Undergraduate degree: Philosophy
Science GPA 2.84 🙁
Overall GPA 3.36
DAT - hopefully sometime in August

if you get good DATs you have a shot at a few interviews... then after that? who knows....

Realistically, what kind of scores should I be aiming for on AA and PAT?

New member to the club here, just want to get an idea of my chances. Here are my stats:

Undegrad GPA: 2.8
DAT: 26/25/24
Schools applied to: UOP, USC, NYU, Boston, UCSF

I know my DAT score is quite shocking but I still have doubts with my GPA. I did a double major in college in 4 years so thats the main reason why my GPA is so low.

Also I worked in finance for a few years before switching to dentistry. I've taken lots of pre dental courses and done tons of hours observing dentists.
So overall I have a very strong application but I'm worried my GPA will keep me from getting interviews.

What do you guys think my chances are at these schools? Also I would like to add 2-3 schools and need advice about which schools to add. But I'll only add a school if I have a realistic shot of getting an interivew. Someone had told me to apply to Harvard with my DAT scores being so high but I don't really see the point if their average GPA is 3.7 and I doubt they'll care that I did a double major.

Hi, guys just found out that such a meaningful thread existed so here i am, my stats:

undergrad GPA: 2.67 overall (pretty much sucked all the way through, no trend of improvement)

currently in a graduate program with the same school, GPA: 3.62

i am moving into 3rd quarter of my graduate school with about 18 units complete.

currently studying for my DATs, aiming for something around 20s

what are some other things i can do to boost up my application??

should i retake all those C classes i took while in undergrad? (i have lots of them) or will my score on the DATs in bio, ochem, and chem prove to them i have mastered the material???

thanx.. let my journey being

Mr.E said:

if I was in your situation, I personally wouldn't bother applying unless I got over 20s, and I wouldn't feel good about my odds at all unless I approach 25s.

if you're in doing grad studies in a science and you score over 20s, I wouldn't re-take the undergrads... but if you're doing a grad program in like political science.... you've got some uphill battles to fight.

In the 20s would make you a pretty good applicant. Your gpa wont' raise that much by retaking your undergrad.

what are some colleges i should be looking into?? i was initially thinking about applying for 30 schools, but from what i been reading, for alot of school i shouldnt even bother to try.

doesnt applying for more increase my chance of getting in???

no applying to schools that would automatically toss your application means that you just waste more money....

This is post is probably geared toward Yah-E (OP). It seems kind of amazing that you went from a under 3.0 to planning specializing in OMFS - that's quite awesome and amazing. I'm under the impression that people who specialize are already in the cream of the crop before they even enter dental school.

Fire Dont Listen to Anybody If your score in the 20's you will get in. You dont need 25's. I know dentist's who had 2.8's or 2.9's and got a 19 on the DAT and didnt do graduate work and got into Dental School. Do some shadowing for experience and let the Dentist right you a rec. Dont listen to anybody 25's c'mon lol yeah. Stand out in your personal statement you'll be fine.
I have heard alot fo inspiring facts. 🙂

What year were they accepted?

I am applying this year, because i took a year of from school. But one of my friends got into a dental school with a 19 and a 3.0. It all depends on your whole application you have to make yourself stand out. The interview is crucial i know sa tudent with a 4.0 and 20's that didnt get in because they where just a book worm and have no personality for dentistry. It also depends very much on the schools you apply to.

your facts also comes from dentists that enter dental school during a time with less competiton.

I, too, believe it's amazing that I'm in a circumstance where I can apply to OMFS residencies and be a semi-competitive applicant. You set a goal and work hard, anything can be accomplished and acheived. There will be a lot of hard work and dedication, but anything is possible.

I'm not an OMFS resident yet so we don't know if my current application will be successful. Once I matched, then we can celebrate! Having a under 3.0 cumulative GPA does not mean that particular person is not "cream of the crop", it simply only mean that particular person was not focused or academic orientated at that period of time.

Some of the "cream of the crop" students in undergrad are in the bottom 1/3 of their dental school. At times, I wish I would have been focused more earlier during undergrad, but my past made who I am today. I worked hard in dental school and have placed myself in a situation where I am semi-competitive for OMFS residencies.

Only time will tell if my dream and goal will come true on January 30, 2006 (Match Day).

really having a hard time studying for DAT. cant remember everything, very discouraging after awhile, what can i do to improve this??

Hey Firenoodle, just keep marching forward on the DAT. Spend 40 minutes studying, then take a 10 minute break. I don't study with music on, and I try to read as fast as possible, with my the tip of my fingers tracing across the pages as a guide to force me on.

If I study and read too slow, my mind tends to wander. review once in a while, and do a lot of those practice exams. my marks suck so I have to ace this DAT or else.

umm...why??? are u suggesting i should bring my flash card with me while i do these things??

I'm merely suggesting to do something fun for yourself at the end of your studying sessions as a reward. often, I find myself so lost in study that I don't know what is fun to do.

Yah-E, check your PM's please.

Thanks!

Hey all! I'm not getting any love from the forums, perhaps that's because I'm posting in the wrong threads. Bt I'm sure more people here are in my shoes:

My GPA's are between 2.98 - 3.17 (My BCP is the highest)

This GPA definately does qualify me for this Club. But I just want to know if my DAT scores are good enough:

PA 19
QR 17
RC 17
Biology 23
Gen Chem 18
Org Chem 19
TS 20
AA 19

(AA 19 TS 20 PA 19)

Hello, Fellow SDNers!
Thank all of SDNers for great information!

My GPA- 2.65 (due to 5-6 repeated courses) 😡
and later transffered GPA-3.54 🙂
Overall ~3.1 (Science: 3.1)
Currently Shadowing & Volunteering
DAT not yet! (will take Nov. for 2007 cycle)

1) Is it possible for me to get in ANY dental school? I’ve seen GPAs over 3.3~3.4 for most dental school mean GPAs.

2) How GOOD DAT score do I have to get?

3) What schools should I apply?

Thank you for reading my message. I hope every SDNers get into Dental school SOME DAY!

I'll try to help you guys out a bit...

Iambatman: With your gpa's as low as they are you should really retake the dat. Apparently QR doesn't matter much, but I'd think the RC is red flag, esp. with your GPA. Great job with the bio. If you can still take more upper-level bio or biochem I'd do that to raise your GPA and get an A, or maybe plan for a 1 yr. Masters.

CanI: Study hard for the dat and try to get 20 and above on every section. Maybe take more upper level science to increase your gpa.

Of course, as always, that is only my measly opinion.

Good luck guys. 🙂

Hey has anyone received a masters degreee from online college, I was thinking about gettting my master's but working at the same time so I thought that A UNIVERSITY ONLINE would be a good way to go, but I don't know how good that will look to dental schools.... and just in case you're wondering why i need a master's ... I have around a 2.63 GPA.. took the DATs the first time and got (AA/TS/PAT) 20/19/16 and i just took it today and got 19/19/19..... sucks huh..... 😡 ...

I don't know if I would personally recommend an online university for a masters for GPA enhancement for d-school. Most hard sciences are not offered online and I would think that d-schools might frown at online vs. in person classes. I would recommend a postbacc/retaking classes to improve that gpa or taking an in person masters.

Oh and I forgot to mention that if you wanted to work while taking classes there are a few masters that are part time/evening masters. I'm starting a part-time, night classes only masters at Johns Hopkins (which will take me about 2 years to complete) and trying to get a job during the day to help offset some of my costs.

i have a 2.777cum. gpa. sci might be a bit lower.

I still have two more years of under grad to do....

i have a few questions...

when do we apply to dental school?(ex: summer of junior year or senior year in may?)

what kind of DAT score would i need to get in with a 2.8 cum. gpa?

does coming from a "top" 20 university help?

I Have applied to dental school and had an interview at Baylor. My gpa aadsas gpa is a 3.2 science is a 3.1 I have alot of extracurriculars including play college football and I am a minority. My DAT was a 17 AA TS 19 PAT 16. I want to know what do you think my chances are and if their anyone out their with these types of scores applying and how they are doing in the application process.

Applying to:Howard, Meharry, tufts, boston, NYU, Nova, Arizona, Temple, San Antonio, Baylor, Houston

Interviewed: Baylor
admitted:??????

I have heard some of you guys talk about an "informal" post-bac. I was wondering what it is exactly. From what I've heard, its just taking upper div. bio classes. I already applied for this cycle but my gpa is terrible (2.79 sci and 2.84 overall). My DAT is on the good side with 23/24/20 for AA/TS/PA. My extracurricular is good with being dental assistant for both ortho and general (dads a dentist too). I am terribly afraid that my gpa is gonna get my app automatically thrown out so I'm really thinking about going ahead with signing up for extension classes for all bio upper div science classes. Do you think that the admissions would look at those grades and would it help me in the long run if I don't get into this cycle. I'm only asking this because these extension classes do require a significant amount of $$ which I am willing to pay for but not unless it would me ultimately. What else would you guys recommend me doing during this time of waiting around. I feel kind of helpless just waiting around. Would you guys recommend me talking to the dschools about my situation too? I live in la and I applied to the regular schools (cali schools, NYU, BU, Temple...14 in total).
