All depends on what you got in those classes, and what the school says. I got a C in bio I, D in gen chem II, and D in orgo II. Needless to say I retook all of those and got A's except for orgo II. So a D MUST be retaken, but a C is not that crucial unless you got mostly C's. So ask an admissions advisor what you should do based on your personal situation.Rutgers2000 said:hey guys,
I heard some of you recommend taking Gen Chem, Bio, and Orgo over. However, I am confused because dental schools count both the repeated course grade and original course grade. Is it worth it to repeat these classes? Or is it better just to go into a graduate program?

Just took the DAT and got 23TS/21AA/20PAT. I'm applying to ten schools...hopefully I can get in and provide some inspiration to everyone like YahE and others have. 🙂

I-Baby said:So what kinds of courses would those include? Just science courses or possibly repeating the pre-reqs?
lastrnd said:ok so i totally belong to this club, cuz im around a 2.6 or 2.7 on my transcripts so god only knows wat itll be on the dental app. But Im planning to send out my apps at the end of August after I take my DATs again. I didn't do that badly my first time (A19 and PAT17) but i think considering my GPA I need to do at least above a 20. So my question was, even if I get a 20 or above, do u think its worth it to apply this late in the game considering my gpa?
aznsfla said:seriously..dont waste your money and time....i have a 2.8-2.9....i had 21/21/19..great recs..i got a couple of interviews...and am on the waitlist at 1 school....i would try to get your gpa up before anything...i was told by all these schools to do a masters...so thats what im doing this fall..
blankguy said:How's everybody doing? After 2 yrs of postbacc at UMB with GPA of 3.9ish. I managed to pull up my overall GPA to around 2.8ish.
Missserica said:Go you. The Admissions Committee will definitely see that you're committed AND Smart (cuz u have a 3.9)! BTW, do u mean UMB - UMass Boston?
Mr.E said:Okay guys, up till now I haven't posted any messages on this thread because I didn't have my GPA calculated. Now that it's official, here is my GPA as calculated by AADSAS. I've already applied to thirteen schools. Do I stand a chance this year?
Undergraduate degree: Philosophy
Science GPA 2.84 🙁
Overall GPA 3.36
DAT - hopefully sometime in August
jay228 said:if you get good DATs you have a shot at a few interviews... then after that? who knows....

firenoodle said:Hi, guys just found out that such a meaningful thread existed so here i am, my stats:
undergrad GPA: 2.67 overall (pretty much sucked all the way through, no trend of improvement)
currently in a graduate program with the same school, GPA: 3.62
i am moving into 3rd quarter of my graduate school with about 18 units complete.
currently studying for my DATs, aiming for something around 20s
what are some other things i can do to boost up my application??
should i retake all those C classes i took while in undergrad? (i have lots of them) or will my score on the DATs in bio, ochem, and chem prove to them i have mastered the material???
thanx.. let my journey being

surgeon said:Fire Dont Listen to Anybody If your score in the 20's you will get in. You dont need 25's. I know dentist's who had 2.8's or 2.9's and got a 19 on the DAT and didnt do graduate work and got into Dental School. Do some shadowing for experience and let the Dentist right you a rec. Dont listen to anybody 25's c'mon lol yeah. Stand out in your personal statement you'll be fine.
I have heard alot fo inspiring facts. 🙂

jk5177 said:This is post is probably geared toward Yah-E (OP). It seems kind of amazing that you went from a under 3.0 to planning specializing in OMFS - that's quite awesome and amazing. I'm under the impression that people who specialize are already in the cream of the crop before they even enter dental school.
where did the 19 and 3.0 get into????surgeon said:I am applying this year, because i took a year of from school. But one of my friends got into a dental school with a 19 and a 3.0. It all depends on your whole application you have to make yourself stand out. The interview is crucial i know sa tudent with a 4.0 and 20's that didnt get in because they where just a book worm and have no personality for dentistry. It also depends very much on the schools you apply to.
Yah-E said:I, too, believe it's amazing that I'm in a circumstance where I can apply to OMFS residencies and be a semi-competitive applicant. You set a goal and work hard, anything can be accomplished and acheived. There will be a lot of hard work and dedication, but anything is possible.
I'm not an OMFS resident yet so we don't know if my current application will be successful. Once I matched, then we can celebrate! Having a under 3.0 cumulative GPA does not mean that particular person is not "cream of the crop", it simply only mean that particular person was not focused or academic orientated at that period of time.
Some of the "cream of the crop" students in undergrad are in the bottom 1/3 of their dental school. At times, I wish I would have been focused more earlier during undergrad, but my past made who I am today. I worked hard in dental school and have placed myself in a situation where I am semi-competitive for OMFS residencies.
Only time will tell if my dream and goal will come true on January 30, 2006 (Match Day).
rajmahal2004 said:New member to the club here, just want to get an idea of my chances. Here are my stats:
Undegrad GPA: 2.8
DAT: 26/25/24
Schools applied to: UOP, USC, NYU, Boston, UCSF
I know my DAT score is quite shocking but I still have doubts with my GPA. I did a double major in college in 4 years so thats the main reason why my GPA is so low.
Also I worked in finance for a few years before switching to dentistry. I've taken lots of pre dental courses and done tons of hours observing dentists.
So overall I have a very strong application but I'm worried my GPA will keep me from getting interviews.
What do you guys think my chances are at these schools? Also I would like to add 2-3 schools and need advice about which schools to add. But I'll only add a school if I have a realistic shot of getting an interivew. Someone had told me to apply to Harvard with my DAT scores being so high but I don't really see the point if their average GPA is 3.7 and I doubt they'll care that I did a double major.
