The Under 3.0 Club part 02

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Haha man I've been on this site for about 2 and half years looking at this one thread. Hoping year after year that I would be one of the success stories like so many of you out there. Happy to say that after 2 failed application cycles, I'm finally in the "persistence pays" category. Got an interview at UMDNJ and NOVA so far. Hoping they go well =)

On a side note, for those wondering what my stats were like, my undergrad gpa was a 3.0. Science was probably around a 2.5-2.6. I did well on my DATs, took a year off. Did masters program at UMDNJ and managed a 3.9. So for those out there feeling despondent, anything's possible! Just gotta want it bad enough. Good luck guys; wish you the best

which masters program exactly did you do?

it is time to tell my story for all you people to hear.

when i was a sophomore in undergrad, i went through a horrible time personally and socially which hurt my over all grade. I went from a 3.6 GPA freshmen year to a 2.6-7 GPA overall sophomore year. (this means there were quarters where i had 1.9 GPA...ouch). i went to my bio sci counselor and asked if there was any hope for me to continue on to graduate school. she told me "no, just be glad that you are graduating." i then went out to prove her wrong. i know i couldn't pull off 4.0 quarters, so i did my best to get nothing but B-'s and above (since they are 2.7). my mindset was that if i could get nothing, but B-'s and above it would raise my GPA, little by little. i succeeded with a 3.0 that very next quarter. i think said to myself "if i can do that let's shoot for B's and above." i succeeded again with a 3.3 GPA the very next quarter. this went on so forth including summer school taking full course loads. by the time i was ready i had a 3.01 GPA and that was when i decided to apply to dental school. i studied for my DATs on and off for 6 months (while taking full course loads). i then took and received an AA of 21 which i was really proud of myself. I applied to 20 schools and received 3 interviews and 1 acceptance. by the time i matriculated into dental school i had an overall of 3.1 GPA. fast forward 2 years and now i'm a D3. i have an overall of 3.7 GPA and ranked top 10% of my class. i recently took the NBDE Part 1 and received a 92% composite score.

this shows you that sure you messed up in undergrad, but given the second chance at life you can surely succeed if you believe in yourself.

Inspiring story! Thanks for sharing! I have no doubt that many people in this 3.0 and under club will kick #$%@ in dental school. I hope adcoms will see enough in my application to give me a second chance as well.

I admire your persistence nextuszerodmd! I'm hoping to follow your lead and crush it in dental school as well. I just got my 2nd interview invite today (from Michigan) and am hoping for some more.

Keep the faith all you sub-3.0ers. There are plenty of examples (myself and nextuszerodmd included) of people that have low stats that rebound after re-dedicating their lives and go on to gain admission into a d school!

Hey all..im sorry to post this..it may not fit the thread...but im an ogpa of 2.94 and can do nothing about that....i have a couple of interviews....and feel good about it...but this is my 4th cycle and i have really worked hard to get where i am.
The question i have for all of you hard working people is this: There is a thread that has been created called "Turning Down Interviews"....i have avoided reading these posts for a while b/c i feel that it is quite rude....but i went in and read some posts and my general feeling is that the people in that thread are boasting and have a general lack of appreciation for the gifts that they throw around and treat as if getting an interview is such a NORMAL and EASY thing......I just think its rude and I would like to know what you all think......the people in the thread all seem to be snobby, childish and immature. They all probably have a lot of interviews so they dont quite see my perspective......
Just wanna know how you guys feel about this......are they bragging?...are they being rude?

I have an overall gpa of 3.09, this is my 3rd application cycle, I bombed my first 3 semesters of college and then dropped out. I came back graduated and post baccd for a year. So I think I'm able to speak on this thread.

Why do you care about what people say on threads that have nothing to do with you? People who have a 4.0 gpa and destroy the DAT are allowed to talk about the application cycle in whatever way they'd like to. They earned the right to treat it as normal, because they never went through academic adversity like the people on this thread have. You sound like the bitter old lady who doesn't like what she sees on MTV, well guess what, CHANGE THE CHANNEL!

Worry about your application only, and you will find this application process to be much less stressful.

point taken and well made....
I wouldnt go as far as to say "bitter old lady and MTV"....it's more like professional conduct and how u treat your future colleagues....having concern for others and treating people with dignity is a very important life skill that many forget to develop......
Im just glad that adcoms are typically good @ weeding out the bad seeds......
Professional conduct, treating your colleagues with respect and professionalism are all very big when u enter the professional school arena

As a side note.......worrying about others is a big part of being a health care practitioner houston......dont get yourself caught up too tightly in the idea that you have to fend for yourself amongst the sharks all the time......the "gunner attitude" is no longer viable....that's one of the fundamental flaws with our society these days....and believe me.....it will have to disappear when you enter dschool....its not tolerated any longer.....

1) How are two top 1% applicants discussing where they will decline offers from not treating people with dignity?

2) Worrying about the down and out, the needy, the helpless, the sick is a big part of being a health care practitioner. Worrying about the successful, the healthy, the top applicants is a big part of being a HATER.

3) Don't get so caught up with what other people say or do, especially if it was never targeted at you. Mind your own business and/or just change the channel. Keeping up with Jones' is also a fundamental flaw with our society these days.

having concern about all people is the actual truth houston.......ur closing your eyes to the world and acting like you care if you are only worried about sick people....
ur clearly from texas......

we can drop it now....u keep your attitudes ill keep mine
we're bordering on becoming trolls

Your predents says that you have an interview at Midwestern. If it's Midwestern-AZ, good luck. I too have an interview there. If fate has us both at Midwestern-AZ this Fall 2011, then I'll buy you a TX shot. Cheers!👍

any other sub-3.0ers get any interview invites?

hey all.. i'm pretty new to sdn//really could use some help... PLEASE

i recently graduated from The College of NJ this past may and have been heavily debating on which type of school I should apply to next. Dentistry is my absolute dream and at this point, i'm pretty much willing to do anything to get there. during my undergrad i went thru a few personal issues, but no sob story... in sum, my undergrad record is not in my favor: overall gpa 3.1/science 2.6 ... DAT: 21pat 19ts 20aa ... i have considerable experience interning/shadowing dentists, helped form TCNJpre-dental.. and am looking into volunteer dental missions in south/central america.

I am well aware that my main issue here is gpa, and am ready to work hard to raise my sci gpa to (at the very least) 3.2... yet am ridiculously confused as to where to begin :/ i currently am taking Biochem at TCNJ and anatomy/phys I and Micro at community college. I'm thinking about taking 4 science classes in the spring at TCNJ. should i keep taking courses at my undergrad school and at cc (i'm aware that my 'post-bac' work should definitely not solely come from cc). or should i attend a formal post bacc program to raise my undergrad gpa.. or find a masters biomedical to show adcoms that i can handle graduate level work. OR... i've also been researching hygiene programs wherein i can simultaneously take undergrad bio courses to add to my BCPgpa while the hygiene courses (from what i understand) would add to my 'other science' gpa.

after i decide where to go next w this i am going to retake the DAT..

ANY INPUT AT ALL - criticisms.. guidance - would be great 😱 thanks in advance

pinhi, i agree with you. I've also avoided reading those posts because I didn't see why I would. It is quite arrogant and rude for individuals who struggle so hard to get interviews...but maybe like us (who sturggle to get interviews), they needed a forum to discuss what they all would do if invited to too many interviews b/c it's costly, emotionally consuming and time consuming...

the only thing i've been doing was avoiding that post. I'm sure a good majority of them aren't accepting their invitations with humility (which I think is an important trait to have)

My stats are very similar to yours. Instead of doing post-bacc and taking same courses in my undergraduate college, I decided to do the special masters at UMDNJ. After completing a year, I've gotten 2 interviews. That's two more than the last 2 times I've applied. Doing well in the program has really helped me get some interviews this cycle. Obviously I can't attest to every program but that's what worked for me. Best of luck to you, whichever track you choose. 🙂

... congrats on the interviews! so basically you focused on graduate candidacy and kept your undergrad gpa as is? i keep hearing that although masters programs are favorable, the undergrad science gpa should still be at the very least near 3.0

unfortunately, it differs based on the dental school. I decided to first try the masters route based on the advice I was given by the dean of admissions at umdnj since that was my #1. I figured if I still failed to get interviews after that, maybe I'd consider post-bacc as an option. I would say best option for you is call up the schools you're most interested in and see if you can schedule a meeting. Not only will you get the best personal advice from them but it also shows initiative. It shows them that this is really what you want to do and you are willing to do what is necessary to get in. Plus, added benefit is that they get to know you a little bit better and your application will invoke a slightly better memory than just some random name on a page. Hope that helps. Good luck 🙂

Well, to give you some realistic expectations here, I have about the exact same cum GPA as you (maybe a tad higher), but about the same Sci GPA. I have a pretty strong upward trend and I got a 23/23/22 on the DAT. So far I have heard nothing but rejections from schools across the U.S. (6 of them), so no good news yet. However, I'm not willing to give up on this cycle yet, and to maybe give you a little more perspective I was in the early August mailing list which probably hurt me a little. I'm also going to go back to school to try and raise my GPA a little more starting in January to get over that 3.0 hump just in case things go sour for the rest of this cycle. Just study hard for the DAT and good luck!

what do you mean by early august mailing list? you applied late? is that what you mean? are you taking classes at some community college? or going back to ur university?

Oh, sorry that wasn't very clear. My app was mailed out on August 6th, which I think is considered medium-late, at least not early. I'm not taking any classes now, but I'm going to go back to a different university near where I live now.

I am so so thankful that I found this thread!

I'm a out-of-state sophomore biology major at UNC and have a science GPA of 2.7 and it's not looking any brighter for this semester...if I'm lucky I'll pull out with a B-/B in evolution/ecology and orgo I.

You guys give me the inspiration to keep going...especially those of you who've gotten accepted into many dental schools! I'm curious, do you guys have impressive outside-of-undergrad-GPA resumes?

Also, any opinions on DC Howard College of Dentistry?

Many thanks and much love,

Sharon

Hi Sharon,

If you want to be competitive with a lower GPA you should really work hard at getting A's in your remaining years. Do whatever it takes to get the grades, get a tutor, study more, study with a friend etc. Aim to get your GPA to at least a 3.0 by the time you graduate! Good Luck!

Hi all,

Are there post-bac programs for career changers? I took a few science classes to fulfill the gen-ed requirements. I haven't taken the DAT either. I'm looking for a post-bac program to complete my pre-reqs. I thought about enrolling in a CC or University to do my pre-reqs, but I don't know. Which one is more effective?

Thanks!

don't do cc. do university. an easier way is to do a state university instead of a prestigious one. getting in is a number's game and GPA is far more important than school.

Hello everybody!
reading yall stories gives me energy to improve my GPA as much as possible and studying for DAT very hard. I wish luck for all of you guys and wish we all can get accepted into dental schools we like.

here I want to tell you my story so far and I need your help to make the right decision from here:

after 3 years of community college, I transferred to the University. I got on academic suspension after second semester because of low academic performance. I had lots of family issues and work problems, but I solved them all and I have got readmission to start the semester on spring 2011. So far I took 113 credit hours in college and university (but about 1/3 of them were repeated courses) and my overall GPA (using the way AADSAS calculates GPA) is 2.2 now because of a few Fs and Ds. My science GPA is 2.1 so far. I know I sucked, but I really rotated a lot.

As I calculated, if I get all A's with a few B's on the remaining courses here at the university, I will end up with an overall GPA of 2.7 and sGPA of 2.9 . In this case I will get my bachelor's at the end of Spring 2012, which means I got it in 6 years.

But if I want to take more undergrad science courses in university to increase my GPA, I should spend one more year, and as I calculated if I do very good, I will end up with an overall GPA of 2.9 and sGPA of 3.1 . in this case I will get my bachelor's in 7 years. does it make a difference for Dental Schools how long it took for you to get your degree? or they can ignore that if they see that you had some bad time and then you rotated?

At the same time some people say I better not go for that extra year to increase my GPA only by 0.2 points, but go for a post-bacc or masters for 2 years.

By the way, I'm studying so hard for DAT hopefully get something above 22-23, and planned to do lots of volunteer works in dental clinics, shadowing dentists, and more stuff like these as much as I can.

Please help me what should I do? should I take the extra undergrad year? go for post-bacc?
can I get admission to dental school if I come up with a very high DAT but GPA of 2.7?
I heard some schools like BU, Tufts, NYU,... consider DAT score very much, is that right?

Even if you get high DAT but your gpa is 2.7, you might not meet the minimum gpa requirement and will be automatically rejected without ADCOM's having the chance to look at your improvements. Why not just get your bachelor's degree fast and go into masters? Acceptance into a dental school is ultra competitive these days and you should do your best somehow to get your gpa to at least 3.0. Get straight A's without any B's and some A+ because AADSAS calculates A+ = 4.333. Also, kill your DAT (aim for AA=23+, TS=23+, PAT=23+ with every subsection above 20). If you accomplish these, you are surely bound to get an acceptance. Good Luck! 🙂

The AET Post Bacc program at SFSU is excellente amigo.

I need help!!!! I started working as a dental assistant when I was 15yrs old I am 19 yrs old now and a junior in college but my major is legal studies up until this semester I was aiming for law school but I had a complete change of heart and want to go into dentistry. I have three semesters left in college before I graduate with a Bachelors of science in Legal Studies I have decided to take all the science requirements my senior year since I will be done with my major and core credits next semester. My GPA is not that great I will probably graduate with a 3.0 what are my chances to get into NYU dental school, Columbia Dental School, and Stony Brook Dental School? Also I am new to this forum and I am still getting used to it sorry for any mistakes 😕😕😕😕

So if I were to enroll in a state university after graduation, how will my schedule look like? I plan to take a year off only to finish my pre-reqs.

Hey fellow under 3.0 cats, just wanted to let you all know keep goin and never give up! I've had may baylor interview and they said good things about my upward trend so that is important. I was just recently offered a Howard interview so im very excited about that as well 😀

KEEP UP THE FIGHT!

I was told over and over again that I wouldnt be able to do it, shrug that mess off and believe in yourself!

Well folks, it has been a long time coming. I just got off the phone with IUSD here in beautiful Indianapolis, IN. They let me know that I was accepted to the class of 2015.

So there we have it. Proof positive that no matter how crappy you did as an undergrad- there is still hope. I wish I wouldn't have drank all that beer and maybe spent more time in the library when I was younger, but they can't take away all the fun I had. Ha!

Good luck to the rest of you!

Regards,

-The guy with the 2.57 cumulative GPA

What did you do after undergrad to improve your resume?

jirotrom and pogue, Congrats to the both of you. This shows that students with sub 3.0 UG GPAs have a fighting chance. 🙂

Retook Organic I and II, Anatomy, Physiology, Biochem, and Genetics. Then I did a 1-year MS program (3.4 for the grad courses). I made sure I had airtight letters from 3 profs and my family dentist (who is p/t faculty).

Overall it cost my family about $30,000 + opportunity loss incurred by being unable to work my way up in my job. It would have been a lot easier to just study the first time around. I would not recommend this path to anyone.

scratch off another one who made it from the under 3.0 club. "offer made" by umdnj this morning =)

3.03 cum gpa FTW

Hey Guys,
I am part of this club.
Cum GPA: 3.04
Sci GPA: 2.8
Havent take DATs. Studying for that and hoping to do well on it.
Are there anyone with my GPA stats that have gotten into california dental schools? or any other schools on their first attempt in applying.
I am just soooo worrieedddd. Pleasse advise me guys...

My stats are pretty similar to yours. I have an oGPA of 3.2 and a sGPA of 2.7. I already took my DAT and I got a 20AA. So far I already have an interview at UTHSCSA, but i'm in state and it's my first application cycle. It's possible!! How are your extra curriculars? My advice to you would be to volunteer as much as you can. I have a lot of volunteering and leadership positions, so I think that's what landed me an interview. Don't lose hope!!

Fellow Under-3.0ers, I got into USC and UNLV with sGPA2.9/cGPA3.18 !!

Upward trend in GPA is a very big deal. If you can manage a couple semesters of >3.5, you are giving yourself a much better chance. A high DAT can do wonders, but a GPA of 2.7 is still a big obstacle. You should shoot for >AA22 and >TS20 for a strong chance. Also, taking an extra undergrad year is pretty much equivalent to doing post-bacc because they both essentially factor into your undergrad GPA. If you take a masters, you will start completely fresh, and will have a brand new set of GPAs. This is what I would shoot for if I were in your situation because masters are more representative of the graduate-level type of work you will be doing in dental school. I hope I have been helpful!

Congrats to those who got accepted this cycle! How did you guys improve your stats?

it is time to tell my story for all you people to hear.

when i was a sophomore in undergrad, i went through a horrible time personally and socially which hurt my over all grade.

Wow great and inspiring story!!! The most important thing is NOT to let others pull you down!!! ESPECIALLY PRE-MED COUNCILORS !! I was made to feel like I had inadequate stats by the pre-professional office, and I have now been accepted!!. Remember, at many schools there are soooooo many pre-dent/med kids that the advisors are probably trying to discourage some from applying, it's all part of the weed out process. But YOU are the only one who can hold yourself back, not some advisor who just sees you as a number. Honestly, at times I thought dental school would only be in my dreams...if you've ever felt like this DONT give up, just keep working hard everyday and it will pay off. If you graduate and you really feel your GPA is low get in a masters program and show them how you've matured academically or be part of a dental mission in Costa Rica. Whatever you do just keep your spirits up and know that all the hard work will pay off. You can do it!!👍👍👍
