The Under 3.0 Club part 02

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
my cousin at first was not accepted at any of the dental schools she applied too, after doing the masters program at barry university, she got accepted into podiatry school instead.

She probably just wanted to hear Dr. Shaw talk about gout all day.

so I just finished my undergrad with gpa of 2.75 and my sgpa will probably be lower.

F in orgo, i took it my freshman year
W in english, also freshman year
W in orgo. sophmore year

During my first 2 years of undergrad I was really immature and didn't know what to do until my senior year of college. I have mostly B/C+ grades. I wanted to be in healthcare and most preferably dental. I have been shadowing a dentist. Also, I have been looking into master/post bacc programs. Does anyone know what the difference is? Well as of right now it is too late for me to apply to these programs. With such a low gpa I don't even know if I have a chance. Do you think I should even apply and see or just apply after doing a masters/post bacc? DOes it hurt my in anyway to be a reapplicant? Also, I havent taken my DAT yet, im scheduled to take it in Aug.

I wouldn't apply until you've gotten your overall (& maybe even science too) at or above a 3.0. You can do this either by taking post bac classes, which means taking undergraduate level courses, or apply for a masters program. As someone who is part of this 'club' too and currently in a 1 year masters program.... let me give you very important advice: DO WELL IN YOUR MASTERS if you choose to go that route. It's really a 'last chance' so make it exactly that, make sure you're mature enough to show dental schools you can really handle graduate level work.

It's not over for you yet if you work really hard for it! Good luck! :luck:

Teeths is correct. Try your best to make stellar grades in your Masters and you'll be fine.

So I took my dat today and got a 19AA 19PAT 24VR 18QR and 18 on the bio and chems.
Little background: 2.89 oGPa and 2.84 sGPA
D1 swimmer
Volunteer at hospital
TA
Volunteer at dental clinic
And applied for job at a dentist office
NJ resident

I plan on taking courses this fall mostly science and 1 sociology since umichigan requires it (even though it's a longshot)
Also plan on retaking the DAT in October had to take it now due to timing restrictions and I know I can do better on it.

I'm also wondering will taking classes and the DAT later make that big of a difference.
Willing to go anywhere I get in. If not this cycle then next but I'd much rather go somewhere this cycle.

Your app won't be processed until schools receive new DAT score. That being said, october is late for any applicant, and with your stats, you have very low chance. I would get some GPA up, new DAT scores and apply next year.

Hi everyone, I've been feeling unsure about my next move and could use some advice. Finished up my Biology B.S. this past spring with a 2.70 oGPA, 2.56 sGPA. My DAT is 22PAT, 20QR, 26RC, 20BIO, 23GC, 21OC, 21TS, 22AA. I'm deciding between two options:
1. Take postbacc classes to raise my undergrad gpa
2. Apply to an SMP and get a separate, fresh grad gpa (shooting for 4.0 of course)

I heard many dent schools have a cutoff at 3.0, but is that factoring in graduate gpa? I don't want to go through with a 1-2 year master's program and get auto-rejected from dent schools because of my undergrad gpa which I think will be very hard to fix. So...fix it or quit it? (Really hoping to just start fresh) Any advice is appreciated!

You could probably can get a clearer answer by calling admission advisors. I could advice you to take postbac to reach 3.0 then do SMP, but maybe you could have done only 1~2year of SMP and get accepted in shorter amount of time.

I agree with LaughingGas. Call admissions and go from there. All school vary in what they seek from applicants. Some are big on gpas while others are big on DAT scores then some are big on both. Nonetheless, you have to get that gpa up my friend.

No, there is a separate column for Graduate GPA.

Would it be possible to get into a masters or post bacc without a DAT score for the students who decide late or don't have pre reqs after the undergrad? I'm an engineering major near to finishing and I have no science classes except physics. I noticed alot of the schools require a dat or gre score with the application for MS or a post bacc.

Yes, but you'll need some sort of standardized test regardless like the GRE. If you're studying for the GRE to get into a Masters, might as well study for the DAT and kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

With no science classes besides physics, like in the OPs case, that would be a nearly impossible task.

Right, but he would have to put in time to study for the GRE anyway. If he put this time into studying for the DAT, which obviously includes the sciences, I don't think taking the pre-reqs is necessarily a pre-req for studying for the DAT. It will help (maybe...) but I know from personal experience that when studying for the DAT, I have already taken my pre-reqs at least 2-3 years ago, and it was essentially all new material to me. Again, it will help, but worth studying a month for the GRE to do a Masters, just to have to study for the DAT when he could have done it prior to the Masters and not have to worry about it after? My opinion, anyway.

So what's the point of trying to get into a post bacc if the purpose is for students with little or no science background when you'll need to submit a DAT score. Should I just start studying for it? Without any science background? Or anyone knows any programs that'll be efficient to a student like me, without barely science classes.

Programs that take DATs, such as the program I went to at Barry, are catered towards reapplicants and students that have their prereqs done already, since we took courses similar to first year dental school. If you have no science background I doubt you would be able to get into a program that requires a DAT. But there are programs out there for you, you just have to find them. You could also check with those DAT programs and see if you could do the prereqs at their school and then continue onto the masters, I know Barry had that option, and I'm sure they accept a GRE in that case.

Good news everyone !! I have under a 3.0 cum and just got an interview at uconn! (3.91 post bacc w 64 credits). Applied to 40schools and its the first school I've heard back from and got an interview invite ! You guys can all do it if I can. Hard work will pay off...

Congrats. We can't be sure until we get accepted 😛. But best luck with your interview!

So what should I do to prepare myself for the journey to dental school. Soon to achieve a BS in computer engineering. Barely breaking a 3.0 gpa no science background. What tests should I study to take (gre, dat) which schools would fit my match (nyc area) preferably on the east coast. Anything from post bacc special masters that I may have a chance. I do appreciate the help guys.

Dental schools require the DAT. GRE, I believe, is for grad schools.

I know, but with my background which I'd be better off shooting for? As far as school specifics which route should I take since I have a year left in undergrad. I'd like to get a head start somewhere. Which schools to aim for, special masters or post bacc

If you think a year of post-bacc will recover your GPA to a competitive level then that will be the way to go. If not, a master's will be the best option to start from a fresh slate (in which case, you'd have to take the GRE).

Like previously mentioned, if you choose the latter path, then studying for the DAT will effectively be studying for the GRE (minus minor details here and there).

But yeah, it all depends on whether your undergrad GPA is salvageable in one year.

Well so far I've had most As and A-s so I'm working hard to keep it that way. Studying habits changed and taking life more seriously. What would be recommended as far as post bacc within the east coast? Formal or informal? I don't have much knowledge on post bacc or what exactly it is.

Hello all,

I am right now a rising senior majoring in Biology and entering my final year of university at UNC Chapel Hill. My current cumulative GPA is 3.077 and sGPA is about 2.50. I have plans to take the DAT in October. I am looking for guidance on what path to pursue after graduating in order to make myself an attractive an applicant as possible. I've been considering these options:

1) I am a Florida native. So after graduating I'm thinking of going to UCF, which is the local state college, and admitting myself as a student seeking a 2nd undergrad degree. In this scenario, would it be suggested to retake all my classes that weren't A's? Or should I focus on taking upper level courses? Or a combo of both?

If I were to do this option and pull off a very high GPA and solid DAT, would I have a competitive application for dental school after a few semesters? Ideally, would I be able to pull this off in one year, or would this option take about 2 years time. Or should I consider the next option..

2) Postbach or SMP program. I still have my senior year ahead of me, and hope that I can make myself an attractive enough applicant with a solid final year to be admitted to a program. Do I have a chance of getting into a good postbachh/SMP program (I was looking at Barry or Boston University programs in particular), given a good senior year? If anyone has a testimonial on the effectiveness of these programs, I would love to hear them.

Any overall advice or additional options is much appreciated and welcomed! My underlying question is to compare every option I have and which ones would be most effective in terms of cost, time, and making myself a competitive an applicant as possible.

Thank you!

(Bump) Why wouldn't have you gone to Nova if accepted?

I am currently an incoming junior at University of Delaware and am interested in medical or dental. I started my undergrad at Hofstra and ended with a 3.6 at the end of freshman year, but I had slacked off severely this year during my first year at University of Delaware and got 2 C-'s, 2 W's and am currently facing another bad grade in one of my summer courses which could end up as anything from a C to an F. My current gpa from this year is around a 2.5. If I really buckle down and get A's in my junior and senior year at University of Delaware and perhaps take an additional year of college with all A's, do you think I stand any chance at dental or medical school admission? I know I have the ability to do well in all my courses if I really try hard but I'm just not sure I can even be competitive to get in anywhere and I'm beginning to fear my hopes for any kind of medical/dental specialty are pretty much gone.Does anyone have any advice or an opinion of my situation? Will 2 withdrawals, 2 C-'s and another C,D or F butcher my chances? Should I start to consider other occupations?? Please be honest Thank you!!
By the way I was also going to major in Biology if that has any impact on your answer..

Hello guys, so I need some people's advice on my chances. And who ever has been in the same boat as me.
I graduated undergraduate in 2010 with an over all gpa 2.68.... Bad. I got sick last senior year with the swine flu which I was out for three weeks (with doctor documentation, I still have those documents), my teacher decided to fail me since I missed the "withdraw period" and "missed too many classes to take final exam" this brought my gpa down. I had to take 21 credits altogether to graduate on time while my immune system was immunosuppressed.

I did a dental internship, worked as a dental technician about 120 while shadowing two dentists. For the same hours. I took two years off and worked with my family in the restaurant as I have been since I was 9years old. I have a successful business for 21 years and currently opened up a real estate agency and making commercial properties along with managing real estate and other fun stuff. But that is my hobby; trying to steer away from the restaurant business, even though it makes great money you work almost 80-90 hours a week. Basically you have no life. Hence why I am looking to apply for dental school for a comfortable living. So I decided to go back to school at Philadelphia college of osteopathic medicine (PCOM).

I did my postbac, but it wasn't an ordinary postbac, it consisted of medical school graduate courses, for example:
Molecular basis of medicine, immunology, human anatomy (with human cadavers), physiology, medical pharmacology, histology, and neuroscience. I finished and received my Post-bac certificate for BIOmedical sciences with a GPA of 3.53. I have great letters of evaluation rom both my committee and dentist.
I had taken the DAT back in 2010 got a 15AA SUCKED. Took it recently July 31,2013 and recieved:
PAT 19
QR 17
RC18
ORGO 18
BIO17
GEN CH 17
AA 17 (so it says) i studied 3 months for this and SDN people and I think it was the hard version of the exam based on the percentiles). Literally the bio section took up most of time and left some gen chem and orgo chem blank 🙁 shouldnt have ran out of time even though I practiced them on DAT qvault, bootcamp etc. the bio was extremely hard had never seen before. And I studied.

What are my chances? Anyone in a similar boat as I am? And what should I do? Can't raise my over all gpa up too high currently with post bac is 2.94 but it is so hard because I have about 142 hr credits. Any feedback? Thanks

mjzgrk. The best thing is to call the school you want to attend and ask for their advice.
If you want my 2cents.. AA17 is too low. And 17 in Bio almost could put a question mark on the 3.53 that you did on graduate certificate program. Not trying to discourage you or start a fight. Think it this way: if you survived graduate courses with 3.53, shouldn't you do better than 17? It's understandable that you might have gotten the harder version, but that's something you can't explain to every single admissions committee. So I believe a retake is a must.
Also look if you can take any graduate bio courses at a nearby school as a non-degree seeker, and try to raise that oGPA to 3.0. If not, you will be closing a lot of doors.

(Bump) Why wouldn't have you gone to Nova if accepted?

I hear they have problems in their clinic, not being able to meet their requirements when there is a waitlist for patients to get in. Also it was about 20k more than LECOM and their teachers are international dentists that couldn't pass their boards. Now, these were just things I heard from students from Nova so they have no factual basis from me, except for it being more expensive. I really believe that everything is going work out clinically with LECOM, and that I will have one of the best clinical experiences, in terms of hours. But don't get me wrong, if they accepted me on Dec 3rd I would be there right now, I'm just kind of glad they didn't since I really like LECOM (it's not for everyone though).

I'm going to be blunt and say your chances aren't good. The best thing you can do is to retake the DAT, pretty much the only thing you can do besides getting another masters. How many hours a day did you study? I've taken the DAT four times and finally committed all of my time before the test for two months to it. If you want to get a high score you can't be doing other things and studying for the DAT on the side. Take time off your job or quit, don't take it during school and study 4+ hours the first month, and 8+ hours a day the month of the exam.

Looking at your stats you have a below average GPA (masters isn't spectacular, but good) and a below average DAT, so why would they pick you? I'm not trying to be mean but I was in the same boat and wasted 3 application cycles when I didn't deserve to even be interviewed. Get that DAT up (22+ should compensate your GPA) and you should be ok.

Why me? Because I own 2 business and are very successful however I do not only see dentistry as a lucrative job. I see it as an opportunity to live a comfortable life and to apply my business mentality to the art of dentistry. Because in the long run its not only pulling and cleaning teeth it's a business. And I have made a landmark with my family in Maryland. Only problem is work close to 90 hours a week from 6:30am u til 1am and the same thing again the next with no days off cause its the family "baby". And I would like to retake the DAT! But can't until beginning of November. 90 day wait period I was scoring 19-22 on qvault, bootcamp, chads quizes and achiever. The test I got was bogus.

I wanna take the test again but I also applied to 33 schools.

By the way I was also going to major in Biology if that has any impact on your answer..

1) Get that C no matter what.
2) 2 years of A with many science courses could make you competent enough and maybe/hopefully not do a postbac/masters. More As = no postbac= save time+money.
3) Dental or medical? Start thinking which path you want and start shadowing.
4) You won't be competitive if you don't start turning things around NOW. 1 B is 3.0 which could drop your GPA. Aim at least A- average each class/semester.
5) Lighter light course with high GPA is better than more courseload with lower gpa.
6) If you need break from school, to figure things out, take a break from school. You need to mature to be responsible about your grades. Just having the mentality "I will do better next time" is not enough. Again, you need to really mature to be responsible.
7) Keep the bio major, so you can take many more upper division biology courses. Take easy classes/professors. Don't challenge yourself in classes where there is maybe 5 As in a class of 100~200 hoping to be one of those As.

It all comes down to you. So you either buckle down and get your stuff together or forget health profession.
Best luck.

@LaughingGas Thank you I really appreciate you being the only one to answer my question! I really am going to turn things around I just hope I still stand a chance. I mean why would any med or dental school accept someone with W's and bad grades if they can accept someone with no W's or bad grades? Idk I just hope I'm not wasting my time and money trying to pursue this direction.

Good stuff ! And good advice!

Technically gpa's that are at or under 3.0 is considered the bottom 25% of the applicant pool. The remarkable thing is I realized this after shelling out 2 grand in app fees. I am not a clever man.

you've been a member here for nearly eight years. what else have you learned in that time?

I learned that supporting a family and pursuing a graduate education doesn't really contribute to the aadsas report.

Just wanted to get a feel for opinions on my chances. I have been accepted to two masters programs, but I am still going to apply this cycle. Went to a large university and graduated with an oGPA of 2.85 and sGPA of 2.5. Took my DAT a few weeks ago and received 18 BIO / 19 GC / 19 ORGO / 19 PAT / 20 RC / 16 QR 😡

Might want to consider saving money and forgoing applying until after you 4.0 whichever masters program you choose to enter.

And you'll still need to retake the dat.

It's best advisable to apply after you get that Masters with a 4.0 and a higher DAT, preferably 21+each section except qr.

Your best bet is Rossman and MWU IL if you're feeling lucky this cycle

Thanks!! Honestly for all those people with low GPAs... keep the faith. Having received this interview really proves that schools (at least some) do look at the applicant as a whole and GPA does not have to weigh you down. My oGPA is 2.68!! My DAT is 18AA 18TS 18PAT 21RC and 16QR! I am so thankful for the opportunity that Colorado is giving me!
