ok....so i've been reading and reading and reading for the last hour, and it is really encouraging to hear everyone else making it through the pre-reqs or postbacs...I was wondering, is anyone taking their pre-reqs online? and if so, where are some universities that offer that? I'm in Florida, and I would have to quit work to take orgo it seems - they are only offered during the day!!! Any help would be so so so so greatly appreciated!😀

Dreamaloud.. I had the same problem so I emailed like 20 schools within an hour of me and told them my story.

I found out that Northwestern is going to offer a bio major in the fall at night. I was suprised. Tell everyone your sad story and someone may be able to help 😉

www.petersons.com to find schools you might not be aware of

Sorry about my last post. The night before I had my first organic test. 3 hours of drawing structures, compelting hydroxilation and hydrogenation, and electrophillic aromatic substitution reactions.
I'm studying so damn much I am dreaming about benzene circles. Pretty creepy.

Anyway, hopefully we'll get our scores back today. I think I did quite well. Only time will tell . . . . .

Hey everybody!

I was sick throughout the weekend and even today. My voice has gotten hoarse, but I'm glad that I don't have any speeches to give today!

Anyways, I thought that I may drop in to respond.

dhageremtp - well, dude, you seem to have a better start than I do. I've got a 2.5 GPA and 2.0 science right now, but I did some calculations, and I could increase them to about 3.66 and 3.45, respectively, if I work my behind off. I think that you have a chance if you work hard on your school subjects.

jenni4476 - I agree with Skaterbabe74. Take option a. Most of the pre-meds at my school are taking option b, and I say that they're crazy, because they hate math even more than I do (and I don't like it enough to choose option a). MY pre-med advisor said that it doesn't matter whether I choose Short Course in Calculus or Analytical Geometry and Calculus, because I will be prepared for Physics either way.

Like I said in an earlier post, medical schools are very very flexible when it comes to their more obscure requirements. Duke is the only school I found that requires a full year of Calculus. I sent them an e-mail saying that I only took a semester, and they replied by saying that a semester of Calculus is fine! I know Johns Hopkins will waive their humanities requirement under "special circumstances" and I even e-mailed one of my top 3 to check because it requires one class that my college does not offer. They said that all of the alternatives I offered were fine! 🙂

Valinor - "gunners" are people who will do anything (cheat, haggle, beg, steal, sabotage, etc.) to get to the top of the class, and I may anger some people out there by saying this, but they tend to be in the more prestigious universities, like MIT. I have yet to come across a bigger gunner at my school than me, myself, and I. But, then again, my school's not that "prestigious" 😀

In a community college, I don't think that there are any gunners because gunners tend to get the highest grades, and thus have a greater chance of ending up in a place like Harvard for undergrad. Not all students with high grades are gunners, though. My brother is one exception. He's totally type B personality yet earns a 4.0 GPA on every report card in high school. You can tell how jealous I am of his genius, right? 😀
But, well, gunners are the people who are so worried about grades and rank in the class that they forget what getting an EDUCATION is all about.

I worry about grades, because well, medical schools look at grades and MCAT scores before anything else. But I know that going to college allows me to learn, to explore, to gain things for myself that I will probably keep with me for the rest of my life. I didn't really come to this realization until I took an Art GE course in January, and the professor said that he hoped that we would gain a greater appreciation of art whenever we saw it. I know that I have, even though I'm not an artist (in that sense).

Until then, I was just like any other 18 year old pre-med. "Come on, why am I supposed to take this class if I'm not gonna use it as a doctor!" "These classes are a waste of time! Everybody's only taking it because the school says that they have to!" I also happened to party a lot before too. Not so much anymore, though, because I want to get good grades and a solid GPA.

CJ2Doc - Thank you for the look in Organic Chemistry. Do you need any tips on studying, or are you fairly well-versed? I've heard over and over again that flash cards help out...even from one guy who got an A in both semesters of his Organic Lecture. As for his lab, well, he's doing it right now, and he just finished taking his MCAT on Saturday.

Well, that's about it. I've got an appointment I have to keep, so I'll drop by later.

Dreamaloud - I don't know for sure if you'll be able to find an organic chem class that's entirely online...the issue of the lab always comes up, but I do know some schools offer the lecture online. Ie..U of Colo - Colo Spgs. A good place to start is Peterson's and your state school's websites. I know Peterson's has a section for distance education that I've checked out for some of my summer credits and I know some Gen Chem classes and Gen Bio classes, but I don't remember seeing an Organic class (I also wasn't looking tho).

CJ2DOC - ok now I understand lol, and I can totally relate after spending a weekend doing calculus! I soooo can't wait for this class to be over! Let us know how you did on the exam😀

I've had the experience of meeting a few "gunners" in community college, but I agree that "most" have been gunners all through hs as well and most likely end up with a full ride to some university. The few that I've met in CCs were from very disadvantaged backgrounds or decided after hs that they really wanted to do something really hard like become a doctor/engineer/etc. They tend to feel they have something to "prove" now and tend to be the suck-ups as well. I haven't met any that truly sabotaged another student thankfully tho. And I know I have one in my calc class who's a bio major (and a couple in the nursing program in A&P) but thankfully so far my school doesn't have too many.

I worry about grades a lot too, especially considering my first semester's performance and my previous history, and I'll fight for every possible point (ie. all the extra credit in chem and psych lol) but I don't consider myself a gunner because I won't suck up to anyone. (Although maybe I should have with my calc prof lol), but I just keep at it and have faith that everything WILL work out eventually. I also am lucky enough to have a very wide range of interests eduactionally wise so while many premeds are questioning why they have to take such and such class I'm going to be stuffing my summers with extra classes in those subjects just cuz I enjoy them. I don't need them anymore (other than a 300 level humanities class, and an English lit class to fulfill my oral communication requirement), but I'd be bored otherwise
 .

Anyway, good luck accomplishing everything you need to accomplish this week, I'm off to finish studying for my calc test tonite (took a quiz on the textbook's website last nite and only got a 65🙁 but I'm sure I'll do better tonite). I have soooo much to do this week! lol

It's been a few days since I've posted, mainly because I don't think there is anything very interesting or exciting that's been going on w/ me that anyone would want to read! 😉

Well, 2 finals down and 3 to go. My biology lab exam last week went pretty well I think. Like I said before, I made a few stupid stupid mistakes I could hit myself for, but what I didn't screw up on made up for it. I just got done taking my French final, and I have NO CLUE what to think about that one. Today was the written section and tomorrow I have to go in for the speaking portion.

The 3 I have left are my honors humanities course (I have to write 3 2-3 page essays for 3 of the topics the prof listed), my honors art class (I have no idea what's going to be on this one), and biology lecture. I should do alright (I hope). Gotta keep an optimistic attitude.

Only 4 more days till I get to move outta these dorms! 😀

Catch ya later!
-Niki

Thanks for the info, yes the 2 c's are in gen bio and gen chem...second semester. First semester was both B's. I decided to go to paramedic school so I didnt give it my all. With the organic chem and physics left, and if I get A's in them I would have a 3.25.......in science. Add that to my paramedic expirence and I think I have a chance. Well keep up the good work all, hope to see you in a white coat one day!

Just wanted to post that I ACED my calc and chem test WOOT! I studied so hard for those 2 test; time to relax and go party!

Skaterbabe- funny you should mention it, im disadvantaged and I DO feel like I have something to prove (maybe I have alil gunner in myslef), though there is nothing I despise more than a brown noser- come to think of it there were alot of those in my BIO 1 class 😡 last semester...can't really blame them though I guess; there were quite a few people repeating that class for the 3d or 4th time that class was rough! the proffesor was insanely dfficult!

It's over!!! Thank god...lol:laugh:

Just got back from my calc test. It actually wasn't quite as bad as I thought it would be so hopefully I did ok on it. I'm continually amazed at how two teachers at the same school teaching the same subject can emphasize such different concepts though. Last semester this test had one antiderivative and one limit using L'hospital's rule (sorry to all those who haven't taken calculus yet). This semester we had 5 antiderivatives including a word problem using them (although one was shockingly extra credit), and 4 limits . The other word problem on this test was thankfully very easy. We also didn't have to draw any graphs at all, although we had to find things like the absolute max/min and where a graph would be decreasing and curving upward and inflection points lol. I kind of blanked on how to show that a function only had one root and then how to get a better approximation of that root, but I don't think I missed more than 8 points in that section (total was 12 for that). I think I figured out the antiderivative word problem too despite not having worked ANY of those lol.

Anyway it's over, and now I can move onto all my other subjects that I've been neglecting this past week lol.

Good luck on your remaining finals Lilsquirt! I can totally relate to your French final....I felt exactly the same way about Spanish last semester...that was one of the hardest foreign language tests I've ever taken in my life!

WTG Valinor! Hard work always pays off! Have a couple drinks for me lol...got too much work to do this week to party even though I desparately want to after this test tonite lol. I think most premeds have a "little" gunner in them...after all we're constantly being told we can't get more than one B per semester and get into med school, but the "true" gunners you'll recognize immediately if you ever see one. I know you're at a CC but 3 or 4 times through Gen Bio?? Maybe they should start considering another major even if the prof is tough....

Well I'm off to finish my lab notebook for tomorrow, and my A&P notes. Tomorrow I'll work on my chem chapter for the test on Fri, and hopefully read some of my abnormal psych which I'll probably be almost 2 chapters behind as of Wed lol. This weekend I'll probably be writing my first draft of my chem lab paper, and reading more A&P, and reviewing for the chem final...argh...why do teachers always cram stuff into the last couple weeks?? lol

Well, I got my test back last night--before the curve, a soliad C. I placed 5th of 11 students. There was 1 B, 3 B-'s, and 1 C+. The way our prof works the curve, is that she looks at the grade trend--then decides which student most deserves a C. That student gets bumped up to a C, then everyone ahead, gets a bump up the approriate places. The student she used got a D-, so I got a curve to a B!!!! Whoohooo!. 😀 The funny thing was that I could have had higher, because I just made dumb mistakes like not putting the circle in the middle of the benzene ring, not alphabetising my prefixes in nomenclature (only on some), so I had alot of 1/2 points deducted, but my reactions were all correct. So needless to say, I am pretty happy.

Valinor, a gunner doesn't necessarily just sabotage others. A gunner is a person who is so ultra competitive with grades that they will spend all hours studying, degrade those with grades lower than theirs, be jealous of those with grades higher, and act like a pompous ass. For example, if you see these jerks who post: "I have a 3.9 GPA at Yale and got a 38 on my MCAT, what's my chances?" or "Should I go to Harvard or MIT for pre-med?" Another example would be that fat guy who wears the bow tie on Patch Adams.

Way to go,CJ..glad you're happy with your grades. .
I finally recieved some info about my fonancial aid so it's looking okay so far.I dare not get too pumped too early.I've usually had to work and go to school so if I have to I have to.Good to know you guys have done and are doing that too. It just gets really hard and you feel like you dragging your body out of the bed after a while.
But oh the road to "Physician" sure looks good to me... 😀

Well, it looks like everybody's doing well in their classes so far...

I'm not quite sure why I'm posting again. Maybe it's 'cuz I like to update my situation daily. Anyways...

Skaterbabe74 - hey, I've been wondering, does your Chemistry major only require 1 semester of Calculus? The chemistry major at my school requires 1 year of Calculus, so they have to take the Analytical Geometry + Calc classes! 😀 Of course, I ain't that interested in Chem anyhow, and I stopped questioning why I have to take certain courses a long time ago...now I just study and don't question it.

Oh, and I should mention that I talked to a friend this morning who took the MCAT on Saturday. His second time too, so he's taken the test before revision and now he's taken it after revision. He said that there were definitely less Organic Chem questions, but there were a lot more General Chem questions, so what you learned from G. Chem I and what you're learning now would be put to good use 😉

Valinor - Congrats dude! I wish I could take Calc right now and get it over with. Say, when do you transfer to a university, and which ones are you deciding on right now? Oh yeah, and about the bio class thing...I know how ya feel about the professor. My bio class last semester was insanely difficult (and it was only about evolution and biodiversity), but I believe that they are set up that way to "weed out the curious from the serious," as the expression goes. Lots and lots of students are taking it over again, and thankfully, I don't have to, unless I wanna replace my C grade...but I don't think that I'd need to especially if I work as hard next semester as I am now.

LilSquirt1217 - well, it's nice to know that you're taking your finals...I still have an entire month before mine, but oh well...

CJ2Doc - yeah, that's pretty cool that Organic is graded on a curve...I heard that the scores are pretty darn low for the most part. So, um, do ya got any advice for O-Chem? 😀
I will probably take it right after G. Chem...if I can just figure out which professor fits me...

I also hate those stupid posts like "I have 3.9 GPA and 40 MCAT, do I have a chance?"...really gets me down, 'cuz I have a 2.5 GPA and my MCAT practice score right now is way lower than that. Honestly, those snobs don't realize how much the average applicant has, and if they don't get accepted to any of the schools they applied to, I wouldn't be surprised, with an attitude like that! In fact, a lot of THOSE people who are rejected without an interview are probably rejected because of their personal statements...as for the ones who are rejected after interviews, they probably don't do well in hiding their arrogant attitudes.

Okay, now onto boring old me...

Like I said before, I talked to a dude about the MCAT this morning. The one thing he said that he wished he could do over again was begin studying for it earlier, like where I am now (he's a 4th yr student, btw)...so he said that he was gonna hand me his MCAT notes and told me that now would be a good time to begin studying for the MCAT (at least during my free time...I dunno)

Here's my situation on my classes:

Chemistry - So far I've got an A- in the class (after dropping my last exam score), but if I could bust out A's on my next two exams and especially the final, then that'll guarantee an A in this class...the final counts the same as the entirety of labs

Psychology - Well, at this point in time, I'm probably getting a B, though my mid-term exam may have dropped it to a C...but I still have several more quizzes, a 7 page term paper, and a final exam to boost it up. Plus, I did some extra credit, so hopefully it'll be a B, or even an A-

Political Science - Well, with my grades right now for this class, it could go either way...A- or B+...of course, I still have three more tests, including the final...if I get an A on 2 out of the 3 exams, then I'll have a guaranteed A

English - I'm not doing as well in this class as I expected to do...my grade was B- the last time I checked, and after the essay I turned in this morning, I have a bad feeling that it'll turn into a C+...but I still have 3 other essays (2 are revisions) to turn in, and hopefully I'll get a B in this class once the semester's over and out

So I guess I'll just have to be busting my behind...I never did well in classes with subjective grading (bio 171, engl 101, etc.) anyhow...

Well, that's it in a nutshell. I'm hungry, I have an activity section for Chem starting in an hour, and I have a lab report due on Friday in addition to another Psych quiz. Totally stinks that I have to wait until Thursday after lab before I could go see my pre-med advisor.

Biodude,

Granted, I have only gone through the first six chapters, but here's what's a necessity so far.

1. Flashcards--to memorize all the functional groups
2. Colored pencils--for when you start to move around molecules--you can keep them all straight and to distinguish isomers.
3. Molecular models--we just started Fischer Projections and its alot easier to decifer them if you have a model in front of you, especially when you start rotating molecules
4. Time--you must work the problems to get this stuff. The only way to get the hang of Organic Chem is thru practice, practice, practice!

I'll post more--when I know more.

2badr,

Thanks for the support. I know how tired you feel, 6am comes way to quickly. Just keep thinking--it'll be worth it--I'll be Dr. 2badr (you'll probably have to change your screen name)--it'll be worth it. . . . .

Thanks CJ.That's what I thought about too. .I can hardly wait for that to happen.
I don't know if it's the change in the weather here or what but there was another emergency right in front of my face-and again I was helpless while the qualified healthcare team took over.A man clutched his chest and turned beet red.Someone came thru the door inquiring about a doctor or a nurse.I wish I could have helped.I hate being in that situation.I am definitely going to learn CPR skills this summer.Without a doubt.
On another note the field of medicine is so vast and so broad. But a thought occured to me while I was thinking about these career choices.I know for me personally if I were a nurse I would prolly run home, look all the pertinent medical info up on the patient just to further understand the illness the patient was going thru. But as a nurse there would only be so much that I would be able to do.And I know that would really frusrtate me.I don't like having limitations when it comes to human life. Please no flames I am speaking in terms of scope of practice for the nurse, not necessarily the knowledge. I like to have the "full" picture -or some semblance of it- and be able to treat the patient with the clinical skills I have acquired.
Don't know why I thought about this but thanks for reading.🙂
well off to the "real" world 'til 3:30.😀

Hey all-- Today was a bit on the annoying side for me. In chem lab last week our prof told us to have our notebooks ready for this week (completely ready for him to check through). Ok fine, but then he didn't list the guidelines for our last postlab on the website until yesterday afternoon! Suffice it to say I spent today finishing my notebook in lab (we were only going over how to write our final report and checking in our lab drawers so there was plenty of time). However, he collected the notebooks to go over at his leisure - We have a minimum 8 pg paper due a week from Fri and he's not returning them to us until Friday!!! And since he hadn't told us we were turning in the notebooks rather than him just going around looking at them in class I hadn't redone a set of graphs that need to be redone (they ended up on the wrong scale - I suck at Excel lol). Then I was supposed to meet a classmate to go through a demo we're performing next week, but she was engrossed in finishing her lab notebook (she's in a different section then me) and starting to write her paper already. That section has already had a week to start working on the paper and it's due only one day prior to ours! How exactly is that fair to us? Guess what I'll be doing all this weekend! Then of course the bus had to be running late all day today so I got to school an hour late this morning and got home an hour and a half late tonite. Arrrgghhhh! 😡

Ok...I feel better now 🙂

Biodude - If someone is getting a chemistry degree alone they are required to take a full year of calculus (because of Physical Chem), however there is an option for students getting a Biology degree to tack on a BA in Chemistry by taking 4 more Chem classes above Organic. Now if that student decides to take Physical Chem then yes they need the full year of calculus (calc I and calc II at our school), but I intend to take Analytical Chem, the second semester of Biochem (1st semester counts as a bio credit), Biochem lab, and Molecular Bio + lab as my Chem credits (Biochem and Molecular Bio are cross-listed between the 2 depts) so I won't need the second semester of Calc.

Way to go on your Organic test CJ!

Congrats on your first look at the financial package 2Bad. It's always such a huge relief when you don't have to worry as much about money lol.

I finally finished my notes on the endocrine system for A&P. Now I've only got the reproductive system left...breeze city lol. (Not, but judging from what we did in class today I don't think he's going to go into as much detail about gametogenesis as he could

😀 ). I'm off to work on my last chapter of Gen Chem (luckily these last 2 chapters won't be on our final, just our test Fri so I don't have to worry about them too much).

Hi everyone! Just thought that I'de join the club! I'm pre-pre med (I'll be starting college in the fall), but I have gotten a couple courses out of the way through concurrent enrollment at CU Boulder- Calc 1 and 2 and Public Speaking- and am still trying to decide on where to go next year (CU boulder, Knox college, and Truman state university) and any advice would be really helpful! Anywho, I've been lurking around this thread for a little while and really think that you have such a great support system! It's nice to meet all of you! And best of luck to those who have finals just around the corner!

ClaireBear😍

Welcome ClaireBear! I'm in the same boat-I'm not starting till this fall either but I took 35 credits awhile ago for accounting so I'm starting all over. Unfortunately, I know nothing about the colleges you're considering so I won't be much help there.

Not much to report except (I just have to post this here since my husband and friends REALLY didn't appreciate it the way I do!) I found out today that the anatomy class at my school is done on cadavers! Of course, being the "whacko" that I am, I was really excited and promptly signed up for the class even though I really don't need it for anything other than my own enjoyment. I figure it'll keep me motivated while I'm slogging through chem and pre-calc (and give me a heads up for medical school!)

Warning: major jump in topic here.......

But now after reading the last few posts, you all have got me thinking about this "gunner" thing. I definitely have experienced them before in my business classes-I wonder if premed will be any worse? As for myself, I just plan to study my butt off and learn everything to the best of my capabilities. Like Valinor, I was disadvantaged when I was younger and I also feel like I have to prove something, only it's just to myself and not to anyone else this time around. Even if I do wind up with a 3.9 GPA and 40 MCAT (and that's a BIG if), I definitely won't rub it in others' faces because I know from experience that what you may look like on paper has absolutely nothing to do with who you are as a person. And in terms of being a physician, yes, knowledge is important but being human, having a personality, having life experience and a lot of humility is more important (I think!)😀

(They're just numbers anyway, right......RIGHT? lol)

2badr-I know what you mean about wanting to help and not being able to. We happened across a car that had just flipped over a few years back (the tires were still spinning when we came around the corner). The two girls inside managed to crawl out by the time we stopped and got out, one had an obvious broken arm, the other's head was drenched in blood and all I could really do was call 911 on the cell, give the first one a blanket to wrap her arm in, and give the second some sterile gauze and saline from our first aid kit and prop her up against the side of our car with a pillow. It was out in the middle of nowhere too so we had to sit there with them for about 20 minutes before the ambulance showed up. Luckily the head wounds were only superficial, I hate to think what would've happened if there was something more serious..........It was just such a shock and I felt SO helpless. But they thanked us for stopping and just sitting and talking (we were joking around with them to try and get their minds off of it). That felt good, at least we were able to do SOMETHING. Like CJ2doc said, just keep thinking.....Dr. 2badr....Dr. 2badr....so the next time it happens you can help.

Right on jenni! It's always good to have a chip on youre shoulder

Biodude- Im considering UCLA, UCSD, and UCI for transfer, im actually pretty fortunate because im going to be able to sign a guranteed transfer agreement with UCD, UCSB, and UCSC...maybe with UCM we'll se......so I know I'll im in somewhere. It would be cool to get into a place like UCLA or UCSD but I don't really care were I end up; I'll do my best where ever. I wont transfer until fall 2004; I still have a year left at my CC. I agree that gen bio seems to be a weed out class (this is CC why is the prof trying to crush poeples dreams!) I think you mentioned you were gonna take cell bio? I took that this semester and I liked it alot (My teacher was awesome! much better than gen bio 1). Ah no more physics, no more, bio, and no more gen chem.........the feeling cannot be described!😳 nothing but gen ed left to take lol.

Welcome Clairebear! I can't help you choose a college, but I of course have to throw in my vote for CU-Boulder lol...after all it's my sister school 😀 Go Buffs! Honestly tho I don't know anything about your other choices so I can't give an educated suggestion, but I do know CU has an awesome science dept, good research, and a beautiful campus.

Jenni - A&P may not be "necessary" but it'll certainly be helpful....especially after reading some of the comments on this years MCAT...our school uses cadavers too, although it wasn't required to dissect them...the lecture prof and lab teachers did a lot of that. We could go in and help though if we wanted. It was a very cool experience to dissect (for me anyway), and I found out I'm actually very good at it. I got several compliments from the lab instructors on various days 😀 I will warn you tho that it is a LOT of work. Tons of memorization, but I still loved it (despite hating the lecture exams cuz our prof loves tricking us lol).

I'm surprised at all of your experiences with Gen Bio. I took mine at 2 different CCs and neither were what I'd consider "weed out" classes. I think they both used the Chems and Physics to weed out people. I know UCCS uses Organic and Physics as the weed out courses so next year will be a real test for me lol (although I'm not taking the Calc-based physics so hopefully it won't be too bad). I have no idea what's considered the weed out course in the bio dept although A&P is definitely the weed out for nursing students.

--Jessica, UCCS

Hey-some chips are good if used for higher purposes! 😀 (Despite what the idealists say...)

Skaterbabe-thanks for the heads up. Guess I'll have to go buy some unlined notebooks for sketchpaper and lots of index cards! I remember dissecting in high school biology was a lot of fun for me, so I'm pretty excited. I'm wondering, though, if it's set up as a weed-out class since we just recently added a 4 year nursing degree at my CC. Hoping not.......

Jenni -

The other thing I found very useful was tracing paper for the lab class....especially for the bones of the skull. I traced all the pictures from the lab manual, with pointers to the parts we needed to know and left blanks to fill in. Then I made several copies of the tracings and just filled in off of them. Also, spend as much time on the cadavers as possible if your lab instructor is expecting you to be able to identify stuff on the cadavers (we used models for some stuff too). Pictures, and lab manuals just don't do the real thing justice...although McMinn's Color Atlas of Human Anatomy is good for the bones and muscles (expensive book tho).

Even if it is a weed out class (ours is) you should be fine so long as you put in the time, and get a readable book. Ours is extemely dense and they are changing it next year because of that. Check the suggested schedule for the nursing students. If it's in the first year for them it probably will be a weed out class. It's hilarious, because my professor always gets horrid FCQ's (teacher evaluations) and is constantly asking the nursing school to lower the difficulty, but they always say no...we want it that hard because it's a good predictor of how well the students will do in our program.

In general your lab grade is going to really help your lecture grade (if you have hard lecture exams like we do). Our prof doesn't always go into a lot of detail about something in lecture and then expect us to know tons of detail for the exam so it's a little difficult sometimes to decide which things he's going to go into detail on and which he isn't.

And don't worry too much about the formaldehyde smell....yes it will get into everything so bring extra clothes if you have a class soon after....but you will get used to it, especially if you spend time dissecting (unless you have an extremely sensitive nose - then rub Vicks under your nose during lab:laugh: ).

Good luck!
--Jessica, UCCS

Welcome to the club, ClaireBear! I can't really help ya decide on where to go...but, I would choose the school that I would be happiest at, if I was in your position. Prestige may count for a bit, but I've found that if you do well, no matter where you go, and kick some butt on the MCAT, then it really won't matter where you go. This is from talking to people who are currently in medical school.

As for myself, I go to a little school called California State University, Fullerton. I'm happy here.

By the way, I'm feeling a bit lazy today, so my responses down here will refer to specific people, but I won't list your names 😛

Well, my first bio class wasn't general bio, it was Evolution and Biodiversity...think of it as a combination of Evolutionary Biology, Zoology, Botany, and a little bit of Ecology combined into one class...it said in my professor's syllabus that it wasn't a weed out class, but I think that that was a lie, considering how bad the exam scores were for that class...I was so sure that I would get a D but I got a C instead. It was fun (we got to go on field trips for two of the labs, one to a beach, one to a wildlife sanctuary), and the professor was a really cool dude and nice guy (you should see how excited he sounds whenever the topic switches to the environment and environmental issues), but I'm going to have to say that his teaching methods aren't so great for helping the students prepare for his tests...nice guy, horrible teacher.

For Cell Biology (the official name at my school is "Cellular Basis of Life")...two professors currently teach this class at my school, one female, and one male. From how I've been hearing things, most students HATE the male professor, and call him names behind his back (His name is Dr. Koch, pronounced Dr. "Cook"...replace one of the O's with a C and that spells...what some people call him behind his back).

I didn't really understand why there was so much animosity directed at him. Then I started learning...

He treats his COLLEGE students like they're HIGH SCHOOL students.

His test questions are all essay; a C grade is simply answering the question, a B grade is answering and explaining the answer, and an A grade is...much, much, more explaining and details than a B grade (about half a page of explanation and details would do it I guess)

He doesn't give enough time for the students to finish the test

He only gives 3 tests for a semester (not including the final)

He once substituted for the female prof's class, and the entire class hated him by the end of the lecture.

The AVERAGE exam score in his class is 55% (F) AND HE DOESN'T CURVE! 😱 😡

That's gonna be a lot of people failing his class by the end of the semester... 🙁

I've heard so many nasty and horrible things about this prof from so many of his students, some of whom go to my Chemistry class, and some...well, they just rant on and on about him after I let those people know that I will sign up for Cell Bio next semester, and these are people who I don't even know! My friends taking his class right now tell me that if I sign up for Cell Bio, that I should run like the wind from the lecture hall if he shows up on the first day to teach and drop his class before it ruins my GPA (the schedule of classes doesn't list the profs who are going to teach Cell Bio next semester! What a rip).

So I'm gonna see if I can sign up for the female prof's class now...I hear that she's much nicer to her students, doesn't give any mid-terms or finals, just a bunch of quizzes, and she explains the concepts much much much better, and actually understandable to college students.

Here's my experience with lab grades vs. lecture grades at my school: Bio labs count for more than 1/2 of the grade, Chem labs seem to count for about 1/10 of the grade. That's a world of difference, and I am so glad that in Bio the lab TA's allow students to work in groups, so that I don't end up screwing up the labs.

Man am I gonna HATE having to take Cell Bio with the male prof...😡

I have no choice in G. Chem II profs for next semester, as there is only one teaching...but then I hear he's a cool dude, like I said before, and I've heard again and again that G. Chem II is more fun and less difficult than G. Chem I, so no worries...

Calculus profs...personally I don't care...I could easily get help and tutoring on math at the Opportunity Center

So now I need to find out which Cell Bio classes that prof is gonna teach next semester and avoid them like the plague! Hopefully my pre-med advisor will know (he's a professor in the biology department and teaches Immunology and Biology of Cancer)

I also hear that the male Cell Bio prof is gonna teach a Genetics and Molecular Bio class that I am required to take...dang it, that'll really suck if I end up with him for that particular class.

One more thing in this LONG post before I exit SDN for the day:

at my school, the bachelor's degree granted to bio majors is "Biological Science with an emphasis in ______"

4 emphases to choose from:

Ecology, Evolution and Conservation Biology

Marine Biology

Cell and Developmental Biology

Molecular Biology and Biotechnology

Any emphasis can be chosen for pre-med students

I think it's fairly obvious which "emphasis" I am gonna choose for myself, what with my interest in Genetics (which seems to be very closely related to Molecular Bio) and the marketability of Biotechnology skillz (back-up plan for if I don't get in the first time)

Yeah a gunner most often is the person or people who break the curve. They're the nerds who dont have any other responsibilities.

Congrats on your grade CJ. I know you were struggling as was I.

Finals are next week. I'll keep everyone posted.

Daily update...😛

Hey people, sorry about the rant yesterday, but well, when you get so many similar opinions from so many different people (dumb people, intelligent people, average people, lazy people, anal people, weird people, antisocial people, outgoing people, etc. Did I miss any? 😛 ) you tend to believe those opinions.

Well, I talked to my pre-med advisor today. With my current grades and my current plans, he said that I was pretty solid in terms of being pre-med. I felt better about my abysmal 2.5 GPA when he explained that most pre-meds he advised usually have pretty rough freshmen years, but they improved so much by application time that they applied and got accepted to med school, which of course, is awesome. My pre-med advisor even recommended NOT taking the male Cell Bio prof! 😀

Seeing as how the female prof was HIRED SPECIFICALLY TO TEACH ONLY THE CELL BIO class, it would make much more sense to take her for the cell bio class instead of the male prof, who is better suited for the HARDER CELL BIO CLASSES!

That certainly explains the average 55% on tests and no curving. That would totally blow chunks.

Oh yes, and if you don't know already, I started a thread...applying for the graduating med class of 2010. This was in response to the applying 2004 (med school class of 2008) and applying 2005 (med school class of 2009) threads

I just wanted to take a tally of class of 2010 people, and was hoping to draw in people who might be my classmates in med school. It's possible, but then again there are 125 allopathic schools and 20 osteopathic schools, so...it's a somewhat dim chance.

Random thought:

My current top 3 schools for all of the info I got about them so far, in no particular order:

UCSF
Stanford
Yale

All three have good research, UCSF is good for primary care, and well...I like the idea of a pass/fail grading system after having to be a type-A pre-med. But then UCSF has Honors/Pass/Fail for years 3 and 4. Actually, they're all number 1 in my mind so I'd probably just go to the first one that accepts me 😀

As for how I'm doin' in academics...

Well, I've got a lab report to finish, due tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. in the Chemistry dept office. I've also got a Pyschology quiz tomorrow at 12:00 p.m., but I'm not worried about the Psych quiz.

Don't worry bout the "rant" Biodude - that's what we're here for.
I wish you luck at finding out when the female prof is teaching your cell bio!

I had intended to do a bunch of stuff today and pretty much got none of it done. Sigh. Oh well, I'll just do those things tomorrow.

I think I'm in serious intimidation mode for writing this final report for Chem in exactly a week (providing we get our lab notebooks tomorrow like we're supposed to). I really want the A in chem class so I want as many points as possible in lab (worth 200) yet I've never written a report like this before. I don't think I can plan on doing extremely well on the final considering the average last year was 50%! (I'm sure they curved it, but still...)

Before finals start two weeks from yesterday I have 40 pages left to read and take notes on in A&P; 70 to read in abnormal psych (100 left to take notes on), and 4 chapters worth of study guide questions/definitions to answer; my final report for chem lab, a test in chem lecture tomorrow, a 1 pg summary of a "science-related" article, a 2 pg summary of our remaining guest speakers lecture, and all the reviewing for the comprehensive final; a lab exam in A&P next Wed; and an entire chapter in calculus. Can we say overwhelmed at the moment lol. Thankfully I'll have an additional weekend after my other 3 finals to study for the calc final (I know our finals schedule is very strange this semester), but argh!😛

I register Monday nite at 8:05 pm (of course I'm supposed to be in calc class at that point so I'll be doing it around 8:40). I don't have choices in teachers for any of my lectures next semester. And most of the lab sections haven't been assigned yet, but at least I could choose which section fit best into my schedule lol.

I'll have "Research Methods in Biology" (Stats) Mon and Wed from 9:25-10:40; "Organic Chem I" Mon, Wed, Thurs from 12:15 - 1:30, Organic lab for non-chem majors (and bio/chem double majors) Tues from 12:15-1:05 (this is a lecture component for lab), and Thurs morning from 9:25-12:05; "Cell Biology" Mon and Wed from 1:40 - 2:55; and "Physics for Life Sciences" lecture Tues, Thurs, and Fri from 1:40-2:55, lab Thurs from 3:05 - 4:45 for a total of 16 credits.

I've been able to leave Tues and Fri mornings open for work study, and I could work for a couple hours most afternoons (I have to catch the last bus at 5:40pm or walk home a mile and a half if I stay later), but I'm not going to be able to take ballet after all so that I can fit in times during the week for work study 🙁 .

That's all for now. I'm gonna go study for my chem exam tomorrow (luckily the material for this one is really easy 😀 ).

I just decided at about 5:45 (6 was when I had to mail the letter in) to go to CU Boulder! Go Buffalos! I am just so excited because now I really feel like I've got the medical school ball rolling!

Skaterbabe74- Thanks for the advice and goodluck on your test
tommorow!🙂

BioDude-I wish you the best of luck in getting the class with the female proffesor 🙂

I would just like to post that me and 3 friends got kicked out of chem lab for being "too rambunctious" oh well the night wasn't a total loss we went to see a movie, we tooks a quiz right before that lil "incident" and I got a ten...lol it felt good kind of brought me back to my bad boy days in HS  anyway.....
Bio dude! thats a sweet looking list you got there! and I too am interested in UCSF, Stanford, and yale, they're all prestigous, and have awesome curriculums.

Isn't it a good feeling when you make that first decision on the journey Clairebear?😀 Welcome to the CU system! I truly hope you end up loving it (which I'm sure you will...)

And thanks for the luck! If I don't have too many stupid errors I should do pretty well on this one (fingers crossed).

You got kicked out of chem lab Valinor?? Wow....I don't think that's ever happened in one of my college classes. What were you guys doing?? lol

UCSF is a dream for me too....wouldn't it be funny if we all got in to the class of 2010 there? lol...we'd certainly have a head start on the friendship thing 🙂

Looks like I'm gonna get to participate in some psychology group study thing tomorrow for an extra credit point which if I do this one and the one next week will be 3 extra credit points total bringing my last test score in that class down to a 93, but since there's only 50 questions on the test I can only miss 3 questions and get an A in the class unless he'll round that last .5% up which I doubt then I could miss 4 questions. It won't be easy since my brain will be fried from my chem final right before but I think it's doable after all I barely looked at my notes for the last week the entire week before and managed a 90 on it

Me too..

welcome 😉

Depaul sent me something yesterday, I'll look into it. Its much cheaper than NW.

Hey peeps, how y'all doin'?

My first class today starts in about 3 hours, so I thought that I'd reply to several postings...

zero_cool_ck - welcome to the club. Wow, we sure are gettin' more and more members each week...I hope it continues! 🙂
Finished second year, eh? Maybe you can help people like me out as I'm still in my first year.

agent - so, how's it goin'? You've been awfully quiet here lately...I ran into the thread about your relative who has cancer, and I'd like to express my sentiments. I don't have any relatives who have cancer, but I've heard about how hard it is on the families of cancer patients.

Valinor - wow, you and your friends must've done something really disruptive to the lab in order for that to happen. As for my lab instructor, he's a pretty cool dude.

I mean, a classmate of mine...we'll call 'im Gus...tried to sort of cheat in one of my earlier labs. Gus is a really funny and crazy guy, and well, there was this lab where we had to construct spectroscopes to view gases in the color spectrum, like neon, for example. Well, a friend of Gus's lent her spectroscope to him so that he wouldn't have to do anything in terms of constructing it. When Gus had trouble trying to adjust his viewing, he asked the lab instructor for help. The lab instructor started helping and noticed that the spectroscope was oddly familiar. It didn't take long for Gus to crack (with humorous results), and the lab instructor threw away the spectroscope and had Gus build his own...a normal lab instructor would've busted Gus for cheating.

Clairebear - goin' to the CU system, huh? Well, I do hope that you will be very happy there! Hopefully your pre-med advisor at that school will be as helpful as mine is

Skaterbabe74 - Gee, I'm really not sure what to say here...didn't know that psychology extra credit for your psych class was participation in a group study...I wish you luck on all your finals, and your lab instructor sure sounds sadistic 😛

Well, for me, I um have a psych quiz today (I get one every 2 weeks), and I'm close to but still not yet finished with my lab report. Tomorrow I will visit my hospice patient (very first time visiting a hospice patient of any sort), so I'm kinda nervous as to what topics to talk with her about...

Oh yeah, and I should have mentioned that my pre-med advisor told me which prof taught which Cell Bio class yesterday. So now I know who to sign up for. I'm even willing to sign up for lecture and lab on the same day, 5 hours apart just to avoid the male professor...that's how desperate I am.

Well...I guess I have nothing more to say for now.

Hey BioBuddy.,

I've just been busy trying to find a school to go to in the fall, right now its either Northwestern, Depaul, or Roosevelt.

Depaul and RU offer payment deferrment which is a big plus, but NW has the most to offer.

Hey everyone! Welcome to zero and everyone else who may have joined since my last posting! 🙂

I haven't said much lately, but I've been checking in with all the postings. I've just been so busy w/ finals that I haven't had much to say other than: I HATE FINALS! But as of 8:30 this morning: I'M DONE!!! YAY!!!! And I think they all went okay at least...I don't think I failed anything! 🙂 Good luck to everyone else with finals on the way! Don't let them wear you down (last night I had a bit of a mental breakdown in the middle of finishing my humanitites essays...not cool!), you're all smart kiddos and you'll do fine!

Well, I gotta finish up packing and moving the whole 20 minutes back home! I figured I could try a year out in the dorms just to live the "college life" for a while...and now it's almost over. It was a pretty cool experience, so I urge everyone to try it at least a year. Unfortunately I didn't live in a very active hall, so I didn't get to meet as many people as I wanted. Still a worthwhile experience...but I'm ready to go home. I miss my kitties! 🙂

Now I get a wonderful 10 days off until my summer class: Introductory Biology: Principles. I heard it's one of the hardest classes in the biology department, but I'm hoping since it's a summer class it will be a bit easier. At least I'll be able to concentrate on it more with no other classes. I'm hoping for an A! Like Biodude, one of my top choices for med school is Yale. I actually requested information from them last week and the other day I received their bulletin in the mail. So whenever I need some motivation, I can look at that and remember my goal!

Have a great weekend everyone! 😀

I've been kind of lax about checking in to this thread lately. Still reading, but by the time I come to the site to check on it I'm so far behind that it feels to late to post any replies.

Congrats to all that are doing well with their end of the semester stuff... and good luck to those of you with finals coming up.

We had our final lab prac in A&P II last nite... wasn't too tough, but I was completely unprepared and ended up with a B. I think the rest of my grades are good enough that I'll come out of it with an A. Can check my grade on the student server Monday.

Three weeks until summer classes start here. I'd love to take one of the short, intensive three-week courses, but they're all during the day and I couldn't possibly miss 3+ hours of work each day. 🙁

Ah well, that's what getting little sleep and having a vomiting one-year-old will do for ya!

I wish my teacher would post our grades online. Shes so old she doesnt even own a computer... wtf!

Well it's not like we were yelling to each other across the room, we were next to each other talking about how we had jsut done on the quiz, but apparently my chem teacher thought that warranted us getting thrown out.
Today's news:
 Got elected V.P of my school's med club
Tomorow's gonna be a looong day; im gonna participate in the "relay for life" which is eassentially walking around a track to make money for cancer research it goes from 7:00 am tomorow to 9:00 am the next day! of course there are breaks, but its gonna be rough, for a good cause though 😉

Hey all!

Well, my chem test didn't go nearly as well as I was hoping. The material was easy enough, but there were a lot more short answer questions on this exam then any we've had previously and I wasn't exactly prepared for that. So we'll see what happens. I did get my lab notebook back today and got an A- on it so hopefully I'll write a good paper and get an A for the lab portion of the class.

I don't think my lab prof is sadistic Biodude. I just don't think they did a good enough job teaching the other lab teacher what was really necessary to do this class well. I mean I took lab with the other teacher a couple times and she had them doing stuff in much less detail than it was supposed to be. For example, we have 3 compounds (Hacac, Cr(acac)3, and Co(acac)3), and we're supposed to take the UV-VIS spectrum of all 3 and then dilute the Cr and Co complexes with methanol and take the UV-VIS of both of those. The other lab prof didn't have them take the readings for the stock solutions, and there's no way to do a comparison between the differences of the readings without those baseline readings. That's why our version of that experiment took 2 weeks and hers took one and therefore gave her class 2 weeks to write the paper.

All the other papers and stuff for Chem are actually for the lecture section so that's not the lab profs fault lol.

I think you misinterpreted what I meant by "group study" for extra credit. It's a research project being conducted by one of the psych profs at our school in the form of a small group study. We met with a research asst at a certain time (there were 4 of us) and were told that we were participating in a study of how first impressions are perceived by people. Then we went off into separate rooms (which we didn't know beforehand) and filled out a short essay telling of some experience (in my case it was a pleasurable recent vacation). After that we filled out a short personality assessment, and then were handed someone else's essay to read and answer some questions on. We were told that was the end of the study, but the research asst had a short questionnaire of her own about current event perceptions. So we filled that out, and then were given a standard "what did you think" survey, and we joined back up with the other participants. At that point we were told the true experiment. In reality they are testing to see how people within a certain group perceive someone from an "out" group, in this case a foreign student (who was part of the experiment). We had all read an essay written by her. In some cases she's an Italian catholic who's been here for a couple years and studying psych. In other cases she's Iranian. They want to see if people will perceive someone from a "not so friendly" out group differently than a "neutral" out group. Anyway it ended up being really interesting, and I got an extra credit point for it 😀

Welcome Zero_cool_ck!

Congrats on finishing your finals LilSquirt! I'm sure you did great!

😀

We missed you Manna! I'm glad you got through finals and managed to get an A (you think anyway) in A&P. I'll probably get a B in mine. And sounds like you have a nice break in between classes to rest a bit  I get exactly 2 weeks and hope to get all the stuff I've been putting off (like a serious spring cleaning) done then lol.

I know whatcha mean Agent...it's sooo much easier to get grades when they are on the puter. Some of my classes have them, some don't. And the ones who don't are horrid at returning emails (like my calc teacher....I sent her an email Wed evening and still haven't heard from her!)

Valinor - sounds like your chem lab teacher is one of those who equates college students with high school students 😛 Congrats on being named VP of the premed club tho!😀

TGIF - not that I'll get much sleep this weekend between that chem paper and my A&P lab exam on Wed 😛

Have a good weekend all!

Just a quick post:

Valinor: I participated in the Relay For Life last June in my hometown w/ a bunch of my friends. We were the youngest group there by FAR and everyone loved us! We got rollerblades out and went all out for the contests and the special laps and all...The organizers were really pleased with our energy and participation, and they gave us extra treats. 🙂 I can't wait to do it this year, too!

hey everyone,

As you can tell i'm a new member and first found this website a day or so ago. Until now I was having trouble finding a thread that relates to what i'm going through right now but this thread seems to fit my situation perfectly. I'm currently finishing my 1st year at Texas Tech University and it has been a pretty good experience besides the fact that I live in Lubbock. As far as my grades go, I think I'm doing decent but there is much room for improvement. Only two finals left and I should bring my GPA up to about a 3.3. If it weren't for history I would have been doing much better. I plan on majoring in biology and then I'll probably attend the medical school here because I have heard some good things about it. From what I have read on this board anesthesiology or radiology seems to fit my interests and personality very well but I'm really not positive where I'll end up. I'm glad to find a thread full of people in the same position!

thanks for a warm welcome.

sure thing Biodude, i'll try to help as much as i can.

Welcome hrusky17! Hope that you find this club to be a very helpful experience for you. Oh yeah, and I'm close to finishing my first year, though I have to wait 'til the end of the month before finals week starts.

Skaterbabe74 - Hmm...I see what ya mean. Psychology 101 students have to do that in order to get a grade in the class though 😀

agent - "BioBuddy" huh? 🙂 Yeah, it's a pain when grades aren't posted on the computer. I had one professor who posted his grades outside his office...for about 3 days. Then I didn't know what grade I got in his class 'til about 2 months later (it was a C 🙁 ) Ah well, most of my profs post 'em online. The "unofficial" transcripts are also online, so I can check whenever I want.

Ok...today will be a relatively controlled day for me. I've got two chemistry assignments to do and my next exam in political science is gonna be coming up on Tuesday.

I'm still not quite sure about how I will be actually visiting my hospice patient though. As for my English class, oh boy am I stressed out about that. My grade isn't exactly stellar, though I am hoping for at least a B.

Well, always great to drop in on a daily basis. As for the thread I started up, do you think that it's pretty funny how the nay-sayers are talkin' about how uptight we are when in fact they themselves are sounding uptight about the fact that we're postin' "so early in college"? 😀

Welcome Hrusky17! Lubbock huh? I'm sorry lol...just kidding 😀
Sounds like you've got a great start!

You were required to participate in voluntary research at your school Biodude?? How in the world do they account for the fact that some of the subjects will completely ruin the results because they don't want to be there and are being required to be there to get a grade??

As far as I know we can get up to 20 points extra credit in any psychology class (including 101) we are taking by participating in research, but you never know how much you'll actually be eligible for. Our school centers on aging adult research so a lot of the studies want older individuals (you can get your folks or family to participate and still get extra credit, but all my family is at least 1000mi away).

As far as the reactions to your other thread Biodude - I think it's hilarious...I mean I've seen soooo many threads that say they wish they had started earlier researching possibilities, having the MCAT in the back of their mind while going through general classes the first time, etc and yet when we try to show our support of each other we're getting dumped on and basically called gunners! lol...oh well...hopefully they'll all really get in before 2006 and we won't have to worry about them...people who are that conscious of what others several years apart from them (in the academic process) are doing worry me.

My day's goals are:
1. Get food and soda (I'm all out!)
2. Complete my flashcards for my A&P lab test on Wed
3. Work on notes for abnormal psych
4. Start working on my Chem paper

See y'all later! 😀

thanks for the warm welcome. lubbock really isn't that terrible because it is so boring it seems to force me to study. i'm still working on my study habits because i somehow did relatively well in high school without opening a book at home. i also go back to austin for the summer so there will be a plethora of things to keep me busy there...ok, i have a very simple question that i have been pondering about throughout this year. what exactly is graduates school? thanks for the help

It the term for school work done post-bachelor.

Also know as post-bac, or grad school/work.

Hrusky - Lubbock sounds a lot like Colo Spgs, except we at least have the mtns to look at 😀 At least you get to go home to Austin tho!

To answer your question about grad school, it's a program that grants masters and/or doctorate degress for non-professional degree seekers (Professional degree seekers would be your doctors, lawyers, pharmacists, etc). Most fields nowadays require a graduate degree (be it masters or phD) for true advancement. You also need to already have a bachelor's degree before you can enter a graduate program. Post-bacs are slightly different in that most post bacs don't result in a higher degree, but you already have a bachelors degree and are taking classes to meet the premed requirements (I don't know if any other field actually has post bac programs or not).

Musing from me: Why is it I always set what seem to be realistic goals to accomplish within a day and only end up managing to finish one or two of them?!? I got my psych chapter notes done, and I will have my notecards finished before I go to sleep, but I have a feeling I won't get to my paper til tomorrow...argh! 😛 I didn't even turn the TV on today which is a major accomplishment for me

--Jessica, UCCS

yeah, we definitely don't have any mountains around here, but we do have some man-made hills in the center of campus! besides the obvious, what else is important to get into med school? should i get a letter of recommendation from a professor this early? how important is volunteer work or even joining pre-med honor societies?

Hey all! 😀

I got a 72 on my chem test, which is still a B, but not really what I was hoping for...sigh...I still have an A- in the class thankfully🙂

I've also had a rough start to the day...way overslept, and my halogen lamp in the living room (where the computer is) burned out so it looks like I'll be working in my bedroom today (buses don't run on Sundays around here 🙁 )

My bf was nice enough to burn an awesome CD for me tho, so I'll have some great non-vocal music to listen to while I study at least. It's a 2 disc set of memorable movie scores. I can't wait to listen to it!

Hrusky - I wouldn't worry too much about getting a letter from any of your profs this year. If there's one you absolutely love and think you'd like to get a letter from try to take another class from that person or do some research for them and ask them then...I don't know if any professor could truly write a great letter after only knowing a student in one class for one semester or even a year. For example, I'd like to get a letter from my gen chem prof (I had him for both semesters), but I'm going to wait until I take Analytical Chem from him in the fall of '04 to ask for it.

As far as volunteering and premed societies it's never too early to start those. I'm going to get my CPR certification in June I think and then start volunteering at the local hospital, and next fall I'm going to join some of the clubs at my school (Most meetings were Friday's this year, and I never seemed able to make them otherwise I would have already joined ACS, American Chemical Society, for sure.

Having extracurricular activities such as volunteering (whether in a medical field or not) and clubs is very, very important. That's what makes you stand out from your numbers to the adcoms. Having unusual activities makes you stand out more, but even if you "only" volunteer in a hospital or hospice or medical office at least then you'll show that you've truly explored the field and know that you actually want to be a doctor. Shadowing different types of doctors will show that you've started exploring the different specialties and may know some of what you like and don't like. All that stuff shows that you've made a truly educated decision to pursue a career in medicine.

Anyway good luck with your finals!

Good day to you all everybody!

It's time to prepare for another week of school, and I feel so burned out that I wish that I could have another few days of recuperation, but I don't, so I guess I'll just have to bring in my burned out self and all.

Skaterbabe74 - Hehe, well the research ain't exactly voluntary since the students are pretty much forced into it, but that doesn't really mean that it'll yield faulty results, though I do see your point.

hrusky17 - well, I do know that following around doctors and talkin' with 'em about their jobs is especially important...last Tuesday, I went to see my primary-care doc (Internal Medicine/Pediatrics double-boarded), and when I asked him for tips, he said, " If I was a medical school, I would look for someone who knows what a doctor does. Not just the procedures. I would be very impressed if the prospective student knew about the doctor's lifestyle, family life, on-call time, patient contact, income, etc."

So I guess getting to know physicians through working or volunteering with them is especially important. I mean, how else do you know that you are 100% (or high 90's even) that you want to become a doctor, if you don't even know what it's like to be a doctor. So, be sure to get some clinical experience, follow around doctors, get to know doctors, and know that you definitely want to take care of sick people for a living...it costs LOTS and LOTS of money to train someone to be a doctor, and if you don't wanna take care of sick people, then you should go find another career before it's too late. On the other hand, if you love your clinical experience and become quite knowledgeable in what it's like to be a doctor (HMO's, paper work, and all), and you still want to be a doctor, then I would say go go go for it! 🙂

As for other EC's, don't worry about joining a "pre-med club" if you really don't want to. From what I hear, they usually have a bunch of anal type-A people 🙁 who can't seem to be happy 🙂

That doesn't mean that you shouldn't, since I'm okay with hanging out with mine, but well, it's just some info you should know before deciding to go in...

As for other volunteering, I'd say do what you want. I mean, I occassionally volunteer at soup kitchens and food banks because well, I wanna help people (that's why I wanna be a doctor 😛 ).

I also volunteer at a hospice to sort of try to get a different angle on patient care...palliative (comfort) care. When a patient is diagnosed with an untreatable terminal illness (like certain types of cancer), then there's no point in delaying the inevitable, and the best thing to do for the patient is to make his/her death as comfortable as possible. Hospice volunteering counts as clinical experience, and I've heard anecdotes about it...unfortunately I haven't exactly experienced it yet. My first visit yesterday had to be cancelled because my patient was recovering from a bout of pneumonia, and she was too tired to see visitors. Oh well, there's always next week...

Well, I also just try to volunteer in different areas to see what I like, and what I like ends up being things that directly affect people so far.

I'm gonna see about standing out through more "unusual" EC's (something that not every pre-med does)...for example, there are people who like sports, and their unusual EC's would be joining sports teams, while music lovers would go and be in school concerts and such. In my case, I'm a martial arts fanatic so hopefully I'll be gettin' into the Wu Shu club at my school...just hope that my legs won't hate me too much for all the torture that I'll be puttin' them through. It's been a very long while since I've been doin' kicks and flips 😛

I may have to take a refresher course (it is taught as a course in the kinesiology department and counts for 1 unit, though it'd be difficult to fit into my schedule for next Fall).

Tomorrow is nothing new...I've got Chemistry homework due, a Chemistry lecture to attend and take notes on, and a Psychology lecture to attend and take notes on.

Later everyone. 😉

My math final is tonight..

Good luck on your test, agent!

Don't have anything else to say. 😛
