Alp- where in NY? I lived in Bayshore, Long Island... long time ago. Do you have any insider info about med schools aroudn there? I think it'd be great to be in a big city for medschool and get all that exposure.

A doctor at the clinic said he'd let me in because I was able to guess Aretha Franklin sang a song that had the words, "think, think, think about what you're trying to do to me." Yes!

<b>Hi everyone who your doing</b>

firstly i did post anything recently all the emails from with link of new post you did went automatically to my junk mail for some odd reason.

I 'm feel great today i started my Summer season about 1 1/2 weeks ago and it been amazing i 've even found some voluntaring too . I am working at this summer camp at my university where spanish kids from 9-13 learn english in fun way .i actually learning a lot, the bad thing is they can be real brat.😱 .I was also the first time i traeted with kids that age

Apart from My ENG-190 course(composition .II)🙂 i got B in my first essay i was so happy 'cause i never get this grade the first time round i usually get more c's. I'm also doing this htlm course which is fun to do ,where a project on making a tourist guide web for US or international student you come for the first time to Spain.

see you

Washkeep - hehe, that's funny with Aretha Franklin
... I wouldn't say I have any inside info on med. schools - although, I did attend a forum type thing at the NY academy of medicine I think it's called. There were med. students from Columbia and NYU med. schools along with other schools but these 2 impressed me the most. They both seem to be very much involved with their communities. One of their goals is to take students outside the libraries and out to the community so that they don't forget why they are in med. school in the first place. The students said that a lot of times they feel like hermits, with their noses buried in books. From early on, they feel removed from the people that they are supposed to help. So these programs are good. One of the examples of the projects they have are free clinics, and even photography lessons for children. NYU students run a free clinic in downtown NYC and apparently it's doing really well. They have 1,2, 3 and 4 yr. students working there, they even have undergrads helping out - mostly clerical work, but they'r important nonetheless. Their doc's are MD's who are willing to donate some of their time to the clinic 🙂

Another school - I think it was Columbia U. that did the photography program. They went out to the community and explored it together with kids (from the community). They took pictures and developed them together. Now, even though the project seemed like it had nothing to do with medicine, it gave the med. students a chance to get to know the problems and circumstances of their future patients.

There were a couple of other projects such as project sunshine which worked with kids at the Westchester Medical Center, one of the major hospitals here. I believe this one was done by the New York Medical College.

Anyway, in brief, I believe that these projects are fantastic and aid future doctors tremendously. It's not all about the academics... you need to have a desire to help out as well.

By the way, washkeep, as an answer to your other question, I used to live in Westchester County, but now I live in Hamilton Heights in Manhattan. (uptown)

...by the way, thanks for the welcome !

I will be done with my pre-requisites when I take Physics II this Fall...I'm a senior....but I have no idea when I am going to apply...still waiting on my green card 🙁 I will probably take the MCAT in april next year...see if I do all right...keep the scores if I like them...take it again in Aug. if I don't...get a job after I graduate, maybe travel for a while...and my green card will hopefully arrive sometime this century 😛

Hi folks. Long time no visit...I am still in the process of fulfilling my reqs so I believe I belong here 🙂 Have been around on SDN for sometime but hung out mostly in the Lounge, because I, like everyone else in there, had nothing worthwhile to say.

Will be transferring this fall semester from my state school (nebraska at Omaha) to a small private university called Evangel University in Springfield, MO. Can not wait for the new move as this is definitely where I want to be!!!

:: puts up feet on coffee table and takes a swig of raspberry ice tea from taco bell::

AlpGlo- I'm very interested in outreach programs like the ones you mentioned. I think it's a great idea to keep med students in touch with the community. If you don't remind them that not all people are upper-midde class scholars, they get these warped world-views and fail to develop good social skills. We do not need more arrogant, pretentious doctors.

What's this "bump" all about?

"Bumping" is used to move a lagging post back to the top of the list, so others will find it and subsequently post in it.

Typically, people type "bump" in their post. Occasionally, people try to be original and type "boink".

Chem 2 is almost over! 1 more lecture and 2 more labs, one being today. I'm gonna be worried all weekend about this test I took yesterday. It was a bear.

Will be nice to finally just relax during the summer instead of studying.

Hey all!

Welcome Alpglo and Karina! Those outreach programs sound wonderful Alpglo! We'll keep our fingers crossed that you get your green card Karina!

Ljoo - Congrats on the transfer! It's always soo much more manageable when you actually like where you're going lol.

Minx - sounds like you're having a great summer. The camp sounds like a blast, and html sounds fun too. Congrats on your B so far in English!

Cozmosis - Congrats on being almost done with Gen Chem II! And try not to worry too much about that test. You probably did better than you thought🙂

I finally got my grade in Comparative Religions -- A   . Thank goodness. I was a little worried since I'd missed more days then were technically allowed and turned in my paper a couple hours late lol. I love how the teachers at our school don't really care about attendance rules for the most part lol. Now I just have to get thru biopsych and calculus hehe.

Have a good one!
--Jessica, UCCS

Welcome to all the new people-this community is growing by leaps and bounds every day😀

Alpglo-You just gave me an idea for something I may be able to do on my own during college and medical school...........tying in with my earlier statements on this thread regarding obesity......

(Skaterbabe will like this one😉 ) My idea is to set up free ballet lessons for underprivileged children, preferably from the inner city or rural areas. This will:

1. Satisfy my craving for something outside of academics and single-minded medicine.
2. Give children who normally wouldn't have it some exposure to something classically artistic instead of just academics or sports (I truly believe that the arts and culture are VERY important)
3. Help combat obesity and promote health and a good body image (must be careful to combat the anorexic tendencies that used to go with ballet, although awareness has increased so much lately that this hopefully won't be much of a problem.

Granted, this is very simplistic and I would need to deal with the logistics of it (this is where my business training comes in)-I just thought of it now, but what do you all think? This is something I would LOVE to do!

And I will leave you all now with an email I received today. Normally I hate forwards, but this one is SO good and I think all of you, especially the older non-trads, will get a huge kick out of it!

Hello Everyone!!!
I haven't posted on this thread for awhile, but I still consider myself a member. I've been wondering- what other members will be applying in June 2004?

I will be applying in June 2004 barring any unexpected circumstances, such as my GPA not going the way I plan or scoring a 12 on the MCAT.

I'm mostly applying to DO schools, but have picked a few MD schools just to see what happens. These schools include USCSM, MUSC, Tufts, Tulane, Finch, and USUHS.

cool, so far thats:

premyo2002
JKDMed

I'll be applying to MD schools mostly. But I also like the osteopathic approach, so I'll be applying to a couple DO schools.

I think I'm gonna start applying June 04.

Jenni- that's a great idea! I hope you don't lose your vision, because I would love to see it become a reality. It's something for those kids to take pride in, as well.

Ya'll I got yelled at for my signature. People need to chill out! Anal premeds.

Ya know, I like the idea of DO schools, but I'm not really interested in family practice. ANd although there's a growing number of DOs in hospitals, and I know they're usually great doctors, I don't know if I want to go there. I hope to at least not be so subjective and tunnel-visioned as many allopathic docs.

I havent checked back in awhile, I hope you all are having a good summer.

Its my 26th birthday today. I'm also sending my application to NW this week. I'll let you guys know how it goes.

hi everyone,

I just finished sophomore year and all prereqs. Besides feeling a little depressed, burnt out, and suicidal, everyone things is cool. Will be looking forward to easier classes from now on and will apply sometime in 2004. Wish all good luck.

Hey all -

jenni - That's a great idea. I know it's been done in like NYC and Chicago for inner city kids but setting it up around you would be awesome! And that email is hilarious -- yet so right on hehe.

Wash - who in the world yelled at you for your sig?!? I love that quote!

Agent - Happy Bday!!!  I'm sure actually submitting the app to NW is just a formality with everyone you've talked to over there lol. It'll be such a relief when you get that letter back saying you've been "officially" accepted tho so hopefully you'll get it back soon😀

Welcome premedi-kid! What classes were you taking in your first two years that burnt you out so much? Where do you go to school? We do our best to keep each other from going insane in this thread so please come by often and say hi or vent if you need to. Good luck!

Hey Biodude - How were finals??? Now you have off until Monday right?

Nothin happenin here. Went grocery shopping last nite - spent too much money but it was really all stuff I needed. This should at least last until I get fall aid dispersements tho. Then my bf and I hung out here for awhile. Schoolwise I'm just plugging away at copying questions for biopsych. My A in comparative relgions brought my cum gpa up to a 2.596 so it's slowly getting there lol. If I can manage A's and B's in everything this fall I'll be back up to a 3.0 which I need by the spring so I can register for 19 credits. I've allowed myself B's in organic and physics lectures and physics lab to get to a 3.0 but I'm of course going to shoot for A's in everything. If I can't take 19 hours in the spring I guess I just won't take the lab for bacteriology but it's really only 4 classes vs. the 5-7 most people take to reach that number of credits lol.

have a good one!

just drop by to say hi!
it beeen horrible hot over 40?C currently 44?c.
The ideal day to go to the water park.
nice message jenni4476

*Skaterbabe74:- congrats on your A in comparative religion-

I will be applying in '04... I'm starting to gear up for the April '04 MCAT soon (need to review gen. chem, actually reteach myself 'cause I forgot it all)

Well, I should have posted a while ago 😛

Geez, there are so many new members that I'll have to put up a list on my computer to make sure that I catch everyone...um, a belated welcome to all the new members that I didn't greet last time I posted! I think I'll hold off responding for now...except for a few people...please don't take it personally, but I'm still re-orienting myself to the new members 😀

agent - Happy 26th birthday dude! May you gain greater wisdom in your older years 🙂 How's it been goin'?

Skaterbabe74 - Congrats on getting the A in Comparative Religions!

premedi-kid - Hey dude, keep us all updated, alright? If you need to vent on anything about pre-med, please feel free to do it here. I do it all the time.

washkeep - you got yelled at for your sig? That's pretty dumb. I liked reading it...really shows how silly people can be and still end up "Ivy League"...after all, I've seen Harvard students sink lower

LJoo83 - Hmm, long time no visit? You should come here more often, dude! I don't even recognize you. Please keep us updated.

Now, I guess y'all might be wondering why I haven't been up and about as much as before. Well, for one thing, my brother is becoming more of a computer hog 😳 For another thing, I haven't had time, seeing as how I had to go and take my finals in World History and American Studies. I'm glad those classes are over and I definitely don't want to take another night class. World History was easy to figure out my grade for, and it looks like I'm going to get an A. American Studies...well, the tests are very subjective, so I'll have to wait until the grade shows up on my transcript before I can say what I'm getting.

On Monday, I'll be starting with World Civilizations AFTER the 16th century and Psychology of Personality. I still haven't gotten the textbooks for those classes yet. Whoops! 😀

Oh, yeah, and I finally received a notification from HOAG today. I got accepted into the clinical care extendership program! Woo-hoo! All right, I finally snagged an opportunity for clinical experience! But I still need to get my CPR certification. D'OH!

I do have more to say, but I need to get going...I am hanging out with some friends.

Later everybody!

...maybe the post is a little late, but jenni, I think ballet is an excellent idea, especially because it's something you enjoy!
...and speaking of performing arts, I had a wonderful time last night. The New York Philharmonic has been giving free concerts in NYC's central park. I attended one of them last night and had a great time! I was there with my roommate, a friend, my boyfriend and a couple of his friends. There were even fireworks at the end - I just loved it! Since I've been living in NYC I've been getting pretty good at taking advantage of free performances!🙂

Hi all
happy birthday agent
biodude, congrats on getting into the program  🙂 let us know how it goes

i dropped my programming class, so i'm only left w/ speech and PE for the summer.....life is good with easy classes 😀

going househunting tomorrow, hope i can find a place in one day..is that just wishfull thinking?😕

have a great weekend everyone:clap: 🙂

Hey CH3 (how 'bout I just call you mr. feelgood?) Don't despair, we found our house in one day. It can be done!!!

Biodude-BIG congratulations!  You should have plenty of time to get clinical experience-you've got what, about two years before you apply? And it'll be extended over a longer period of time rather than stuffed into summers so that'll hopefully look better for you. Also, congrats on the history grade, and here's to hoping for an A in the american studies class.

Alpglo-You're very lucky. I live just a little too far from Milwaukee to be going down there all the time and my small town has virtually nothing in the way of culture and performances (unless you count my dance academy's recitals and productions).

minx-I feel for you, I really do. We've finally cooled off here, all it's done is rain on and off all week. Hope you had fun at the water park!

Skaterbabe-I love ballet and I love kids and I want to help. Now the problem of logistics comes in. Since I know Spanish pretty well and there is a particular area of Milwaukee that is mainly Hispanic, I thought that's where I might try and start. I've gotta see if there's a volunteer center or community center in that area that I could possibly hook up with. I also talked to my best friend who is a little more advanced than I am and actually teaches the little girls already and she's going to help me when she can, as well as teach me some methods and tricks she knows. I'm gonna see if I can't get this going yet this summer.

Also, thanks to the rest of you who thought it was a good idea. A little extra motivation and support always helps......

Welcome premedi-kid, hope things get better for you. Just take it one day at a time.....

Happy Birthday Agent

washkeep-I rarely have these brilliant pearls of ideas, mainly b/c I'm not used to being proactive in my life in general. Long story, but I'm holding tight to a lot of new visions for my life now and I know anything is possible. I guess I've just always been a very caring, advocate type of person, it just never came out until now. And believe me, I'm reveling in it! You know Milwaukee, what do you think of my focus on the Hispanic community? (of course, I wouldn't limit it exclusively)

OK, must go to bed now. Both my children have overnight guests tonight and I only managed to calm the zoo down a half hour ago and now I'm TIRED! Those of you with children old enough for sleepovers will know what I mean....... 😉

Darn, why do my posts always get so long? I think I need more of a life!

Hey all!

Sounds like here Minx....we've been in the 90F-100F range for the last 10 days...we usually only have a handful of days all year that hot.

Welcome Drew and good luck on your MCAT reviewing!

Biodude - Congrats on the A in Western Civ and on being accepted to HOAG!! I'm sure American Studies will turn out just as well as Western Civ did. At least you should already have the book for the second half of Western Civ...most use the same book for both semesters...Have some fun this weekend!

AlpGlo - that sounds like a blast! We have free concerts in our park too but our bus system sucks at nite so it's really hard to get around.

Sounds like you're having a fun, easy summer CH3. Good luck finding a house!

jenni - That sounds like an ideal place to get things started. You may want to check with Milwaukee Ballet and see if they do anything like that in the community already. I don't think they do, (used to know one of their dancers) but they may be able to help set you up too....or even give you space (although I have no idea what part of milwaukee they are in).

We like long posts jenni hehe so definitely don't stop lol, and hopefully the munchkins won't wreck too much havoc for ya tonite/tomorrow lol.

Biopsych is going fine so far. Haven't taken as many tests as I would have liked by now, but I still have plenty of time to get it done. I'm currently copying questions and key terms over the senses which I did a lot with during A&P so it's not too bad.

Have a good weekend everyone!
--Jessica, UCCS

hi,?
i had a great time at the water park it was so hot got burn on my shoulder, no sunscreen handy but i applied 45sf twice daily,it was obviously not enough. (though i have really pale skin color i rarely get burn because i am always putting sunscreen), . i also meet more us student that are here for a summer sesion.

* happy birthday agent:clap:  <br>
*jenni- you ballet workshop sounds sublime idea.<br>
*biodude-congrats into the outstrech program tell more about it.<br>

Well I 'm off to do my 2nd htlm homework(personal webpage) and study for the exam next thursday .

Have a nice weekend.

Hey..I'm assuming that the format of Under M1 club is equivalent to the lounge?

i would write more but i'm going to tutor my cousins in english...i will definitely come back and write more later.

toodles! 🙂

Pretty much Ljoo - Just no trolling or flame wars allowed. We try to keep this thread as a place to get away from all the crap of other threads and talk about our daily struggles, triumphs, etc and basically just remind ourselves that we aren't the only ones out there going thru everything lol. Some of us ramble a bit (me hehe) sometimes but it's a great place to vent and hang out without feeling any of the pressures that premed tends to place upon us everywhere else.

Sounds like you had fun Minx...ouch tho...hope you didn't get burnt too badly. My stepmom was soooo fair that even spf 45 twice per day didn't save her from a couple minor skin cancer spots. Good luck on your webpage and test next week!

--Jessica, UCCS

Hi,

Well I have been reading this for a while and I thought that I might as well join, I mean ya'll seem pretty cool.

For a little back ground info: I am a freshman premed at a JC and I am also playing college baseball.

As of know my scedule for the fall is:

General Chemistry w/lab
General Physics w/lab
Humanaties(Oh my god I wanna be a doc and I cant spell)
Baseball
English1
All of that totals 16 hours and part of some of the pre-req's

Anyways, I just wanted to join the club and say ya'll are pretty darn cool.

welcome to the club RPW:clap::clap:
always nice to see fellow memebers 😉

as far as your signature goes:Rule #1: Patients eventually die
read The House of God rule #1 of The House of God: Gomers don't die🙄

  Happy Sunday Everyone:clap:

Oh, that book was hilarious!

Rule #2: Gomers go to ground.

yeah, great book🙂

The Laws of The House of God:

1. Gomers don't die.
2. Gomers go to ground.
3. At a cardiac arrest, the first procedure is to take your own pulse.
4. The patient is the one with the disease.
5. Placement comes first.
6. There is no body cavity that cannot be reached with a number fourteen needle and a good strong arm.
7. AGE + BUN = Lasix dose.
8. They can always hurt you more.
9. The only good admission is a dead admission.
10. If you don't take a temperature, you can't find a fever.
11. Show me a BMS who only triples my work and I will kiss his feet.
12. If the Radiology resident and the BMS both see a lesion on the chest x-ray, there can be no lesion there.
13. The delivery of medical care is to do as much nothing as possible.
BMS = medical student from the "Best Medical School"
N.B.: "NPC specialties" (No Patient Contact) include Rays, Gas, Path, Derm, Eye, Psych
Gomer = "get out of my ermergency room"

I don't have the book immediately available for reference, but wasn't there something about turfing in there somewhere?

(BTW, mr. feelgood 😀 -hope you don't mind my calling you that!-thanks for posting all the rules to satisfy my curiosity. You threw me into one of those things where you try to remember stuff and you can't and it drives you nuts! Sort of like who are the seven dwarves, you know?)

this summer has been utterly boring. I am visiting Korea, and while it's great being in the motherland, etc., I have no schedule, no work, no schoolwork, no friends here...all I've been doing is sleeping, eating, running, and posting on SDN. it's been absolute hell. I know it sounds dumb for me to complain about having nothing to do, but if you have nothing to do for two months, it's hell.

Especially when I have something at the end of summer that I actually want--I'm transferring to a school of my dreams!! I'm going to Evangel University in Springfield, MO ...clap:

if any of you guys are in springfield, give me the 411 and we'll hook up!

turfing was metnioned A LOT in the book, but it's not one of the laws.
as far as mr. feelgood goes, i don't really have a problem, but ms. feelgood would be more appropriate😛
i'm a girl

Welcome RPW!!

Sounds like you have a good fall schedule planned😀 . Most of us have taken Gen Chem so if you have any questions please ask😉 . As far as not being able to spell don't worry about it. One of my best friends in hs ended up being a hs english teacher and she can't spell at all hehe. I was always the one who proofread her papers. Now we have spellcheck😛 Good luck to your team this year!

Ljoo - I'm sorry you're not enjoying Korea more...I imagine you've seen some incredible sites tho. But at least it's almost over. Before you know it you'll be back home, packing up all your stuff again and moving to MO.

Nothing special going on here. Almost finished copying the questions and key terms I wanted to this weekend. I'll finish reading stuff tonite and review tomorrow for the tests I want to take on Tues. Later this week I hope to be sending in my registration for calculus and hopefully by the following week I'll be starting to work on it 🙂.

Have a good day all!

Hi, I've been here for a year now. May I join this group? I haven't noticed this because I didn't know what "under M1" meant until today. I'll be entering the sophomore class (undergrad) next year.

Of course u can Angelic02! Welcome😀 .

What school do you go to? What's your major? Fill us in lol. A lot of us are sophomores so we'll have each other to lean on for the next few years😉

--Jessica, UCCS

CH3-I'm sorry😀 I must have confused you with someone else of the male persuasion-there's so many new people on this thread now!

Skaterbabe-How far are you into Biopsych? Does the format seem to be working well for you? I don't know how well I'd do under totally self-motivated conditions😉

Ljoo-Welcome! I know what you mean-though I have two kids to keep me busy it's frustrating not being able to do anything constructive right now. Congrats on getting into your chosen school!

Angelic-Don't worry, there's no application (or hazing, as Biodude would point out!) So far in 50-some pages there's only been one troll that I've seen so this is a fairly safe thread for people who want to keep it real. Welcome and let us know about you!

OK, my life's been really boring lately. We blew most of our extra money on doing all sorts of stuff the last month so now we're sitting at home watching movies. We re-rented Terminator and T2 yesterday, so now we can go see T3 sometime this week if I can find a sitter.....and I'm still studying my Chem and Anatomy stuff.

Which reminds me, I've been noticing as I read my Anatomy book that it's just tons more memorization than I thought it would be. I'm not having any trouble with the concepts, I just can't remember the terminology to save my life, so I was thinking of dropping Anatomy for this fall and waiting to take it until I finish my "Greek and Latin Origins of Scientific and Medical Terminology" class so that I'd understand it better when I got to it and it wouldn't be SO much pure memorization. I'd add Spanish in its place (that will be really easy). For those of you who've taken Anatomy, what do you think? (FYI, my other classes are Pre-Calc w/Trig and Gen Chem 1).

Hey everyone! I'm just wrapping up an uneventful weekend before my next session of summer school classes starts. Welcome to the club, RPW and angelic02!

RPW - Hey dude, don't worry about the spelling. You would be surprised at how many people don't know how to spell 😀 So you're an incoming freshman, then? I'm still "fresh" from my freshman year, so if ya need any help, just gimme a ring, alright?

angelic02 - Say, I think I have seen you here before! 😛 I don't know if you remember me, but I think I remember you...you were the one who wanted to be a music major, right? Or maybe I'm confusing you with someone else...just a guess, because your username is familiar and so's the avatar.

Finding an available CPR class is very hard. I really wish that the timing of my acceptance could have been better. Oh well...

Other than that, I've got nothing new or exciting to report, though I am anxious to be starting up on my upper-division Psych class and my World History class. By summer's end, I should be done with all of my history and social science general education requirements...that leaves Humanities, Critical Thinking, and Lifelong Learning General Ed courses to be done with...

Hmm, general ed isn't as extensive as I thought it would be. That means that I could cut loose and take a whole bunch of "fun" courses, I guess, if my major required 39 units (like a normal major) instead of 73 units (like a science major). Well, I think I'll just leave it there. I'll be in later on, though my internet access from home will be down for at least 10 days. That means that I'll be responding from school instead of home for a while. No AIM chats, I'm afraid.

jenni - I don't think it's really necessary to have the medical terminology class. I don't know how much it would really help either cuz it isn't so much knowing the greek or latin (there really isn't all that much of either in anatomy) as knowing the relationships and locations. I certainly didn't know any of the terminology previously other than extreme basics that you tend to pick up from movies and tv lol.

It's definitely a lot of memorization, and it will still be a lot of memorization even with that medical terminology class. Most names in anatomy really have more to do with the location or function of something than anything else so I don't think it's that hard once you get the hang of that part of it. As far as remembering names of stuff it's really easier if you have pictures or cadavers to trace...especially for things like bone structures, muscles, veins, and arteries. I made tracings of stuff out of my lab book for a lot of that, and used a lot of flashcards (something I really had never done before), and then did flow charts for pathways and stuff like that.

If your school's class is set up anything like ours the labs will be pure memorization and absolutely nothing is going to help you with memorizing the various little bumps and stuff on bones or the various muscles, arteries and veins but practice and hopefully visuals on real cadavers. Lecture is all about the relationships and pathways for which the terminology class wouldn't be much help either. And one will reinforce the other for the most part. There were a couple sections that didn't coincide between lab and lecture but for the most part we were learning the same things in both so u got a lot of exposure to it all. Also your instructors will probably have some simple mnemonics to help you remember stuff like the skeletal nerves and stuff. There's also a great website with various mnemonics at http://www.medicalmnemonics.com/cgi-bin/browse.cfm

As far as taking it with precalc and gen chem you should be fine, but definitely don't add spanish on top of all 3. My first semester at uccs I took A&P I, spanish II, calculus, and Gen Chem I. I was spending way, way too much time on spanish cuz we had to write a ton of papers (1 pg essays) without really having the vocab for it yet so would spend several hours looking up various words in the dictionary. As a result I couldn't put the time into A&P that I needed to since I was still working around 30 hours/week and ended up with a C.

I can't tell ya what to do, but I don't think that terminology class will make enough of a difference to legitimate pushing A&P off, but if you have the time in your schedule to do it that way I don't think it'll hurt anything lol.

As far as biopsych, well so far i'm only done with 2 tests lol. But I just need to get thru 3 tests on each of the remaining test days to get it done on time. I'm not worried. I'm reading chapter 7 and have the study questions copied thru chapter 10 so I'm really right on pace. The format is ok, but because I don't have ac I do have trouble motivating myself to really study and motivating myself to actually get up in the morning to go take the tests. I'm sooo not a morning person. I'm a master procrastinator but when it comes to the point that I just have to get up and go do it (which is this week now) I will. I've taken most of my GE's thru online formats tho so the self-study thing usually isn't a hassle for me. We're just too hot out here this summer🙁 .

Later all!

Whoa- I can barely keep up with this thread.

Jenni- I think working with the Hispanic population is a great idea. You know, obesity is a HUGE problem with that population... more so than the Caucasian or Asian or Black populations. It would be good to work with a community-based organization like LaCausa or Next Door Foundation or a YMCA.

It's not entirely easy to go into a community and start a program, but by using a community-based organization, you're dealing with community leaders. They can help you gain respect and trust from community members.

Biodude- you got HOAG?!! YEa!!!! Finally! That's freakin terrific. :hardy:

Skaterbabe
They were texas guys that yelled at me.... big surprise. I made up that quote- cept the strategry, of course. It's basically how I feel about accomplishing seemingly out-of-reach goals.

I always figure if other people have done it, so can I. I mean, why not? We're all essentially made of the same stuff. Most of what distinguishes us is a result of our environments. Have any of you ever seen Rudy? I feel like education is 1/2 brains and 1/2 ambition. With the right amount of work, almost anyone can succeed.

RPW- Where are you from? That's awesome you play basketball, I play soccer. I think it's a great break from school, really let's you blow off some steam.

Thanks to everyone wishing me well for my birthday.

I'm doing fairly well. I'm moving into a new (rental) house down by the park and the river and its very nice.

I'm also no longer working 2 jobs.

edit>> this thread is so big now I swear we might need an under M1 forum... or maybe just a new thread soon 😉

Hey everyone, just dropping by to make a few responses:

agent - no longer working two jobs, eh? Well, hopefully that'll give you more time to study and spend with your family 🙂 Oh yeah, glad to hear from ya again on your housing situation

washkeep - I don't really see what's wrong with your sig...I guess there are sensitive people out there...I like your sig, and you should definitely keep it, despite the whiners and complainers, at least until a moderator says to change it 😀

jenni4476 - I think you may be seeing some more of this memorization stuff when you get into medical school. I've heard so many times from medical students that it's not the material itself that is hard, it's the volume of material that needs to be memorized and understood 😎 I hope that your Latin class will help out! I know that I'll be using my little brother for reference when I take a class like anatomy now (he's very good with Latin and Latin roots...that's probably why he's scoring so well on his practice SAT's right now...)

Skaterbabe74 - I think that everyone can agree that it is getting too hot. I live in Southern Cali after all, and right now it doesn't seem like the air conditioning is working in the library (I'm using one of the computers here). I hope biopsych isn't too difficult for you right now.

Oh darn, some ***** just set off the alarm for the emergency exit...ahhh, my ears are going to go deaf from this loud beeping!!! 😱

What school do you go to? What's your major? Fill us in lol. A lot of us are sophomores so we'll have each other to lean on for the next few years😉

I'm at Baylor. I'll probably be doing biochem or physics. I'm taking summer school (pre-calculus).

By the way, biodude, yes, I was the one who was going to major in music. I might try again this fall, but I really doubt that it is going to work out.

Hey all 🙂

It's actually not too awful so far today. We're getting huge gusts that are cooling things down a bit lol.

Wash - don't let the whiners bug ya...it's the facts of life. You easily could have used any example of a former drug user turning their life around and succeeding. It just so happens you chose a famous example. It's sooo not a big deal, and I totally agree with the sentiment of it so unless a moderator asks you to change it stick with your guns. Ignore the trolls.

Agent - Congrats on the new house...it sounds great! Also, congrats on getting rid of the 2nd job😀 Now you'll have plenty of time to do all the things that need to be done and enjoy life!

Biodude - I think you'll end up finding that anatomy really doesn't use all that many latin roots. Our prof would occasionally give us roots during lecture and the majority of the ones he would give were greek vs latin. Also any words that were either of greek or latin origin were defined in our book too. Honestly tho most of the words that have either greek or latin roots really don't help you memorize the location or function of something lol. A lot of the muscle names have to do with where the muscles attach and what they do but you definitely don't need a latin or greek background to understand them. ie. a few of the muscles in the legs are fibularis longus, extensor digitorum longus, and tibialis anterior. Ok, the fibularis longus is long and runs along the fibula bone, the extensor digitorum longus extends the digits (toes) and is long, and the tibialis anterior runs anterior to the tibia...now just from reading about these muscles you may not make that connection, but your lab instructor will almost definitely explain that to you as he/she's showing the muscles to you.

Biopsych isn't hard at all for me right now. The entire first half of the book has been about stuff I learned in anatomy although sometimes in a bit more detail...ie. they spend an entire chapter on vision vs a single class lecture and about a 1/5 of a chapter in anatomy.

So how are your new classes Biodude?

Things are pretty crazy now, moving all all. But once we get settled into the new house ill finally be able to relax

Plus my website is supposed to launch August 1st. So im trying to get all of that in order. Thats a lot of work. Not everything is working correctly yet.

Hey everyone, daily update here...

Well, I started my new set of classes, and I've gotta say that I will be in for one bumpy ride! 😀

Here's my Pscyh of Personality course:

The professor seems stereotypical...you know, old, grey/white haired, speaks in a boring (but not monotone) voice, and claims to be an extremely difficult grader. Well, that's swell. Also, the workload seems extreme, but then again, I've never taken an upper-division course before this one. It seems that the upper-division courses require more independent studying from the student and the professor doesn't seem to "lead" the students as much as when I was taking other GE's or major courses.

To give you all an idea on how hard this guy grades, here is his grading system:

75 - 100%........A
60 - 75%..........B
45 - 60%..........C
30 - 45%..........D
29 and below...F

I thought that this class would be difficult, but then...

World History: World Civilizations after the 16th century

The professor seems cool and all...he surfs, he loves history, etc. Only problem is, he's not gonna slack off on giving us the info to know for tests like other summer school professors. Think of a normal semester course crammed into 5 weeks with every assignment, every test, every term paper and so on. To give everyone an idea, I will have to read All Quiet on the Western Front and then write a 4 page term paper on it in 2 weeks! That's going to be hard by itself, but I've got Psych to worry about! 🙁

I look at this as a challenge though, which I will hopefully be able to complete.
