The Underdog Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
lol, got that same letter from nova, its a pretty classless move on their part that they would essentially tell us to pack it in when they know nothing about us beyond our primary apps.

Yayy! Is this your second Touro interview? Did you interview at RVU yet? If not :luck:

thanks mzeep! no i haven't interviewed yet, but i'm totally stoked and nervous at the same time for them 🙂 :luck::luck::luck: to all us underdogs 🙂

and yea, i got that nsu letter too. i actually didn't read it as thoroughly as you guys though. as soon as i saw it, i was like ... oh rejection .. toss. 😳

yeah I'm surprised you guys read the whole letter, my rejection letter from Chicago I just read the first few lines to make sure I was rejected and when I did, I just tossed it (ripped it actually first to make myself feel better).

I'm glad I found this thread! Everyone seems so encouraging to one another and seeing the underdog acceptances makes me hopeful. I thought I'd throw my stats up and see what people have to say...

overall gpa: 3.7
science gpa: 3.48
nonsc gpa: 3.86
MCAT: 24R (6 ps, 10 vr, 8 bs)
Worked as a personal care aide at a nursing home for 6 years and just finished a CNA class. I'm from PA.

I applied to pcom (philly & ga), lecom-e & lecom-b, vcom & pcsom. My secondaries for the schools were submitted in between the last week of September and first week of October. I applied late because I took the August MCAT & didn't have results until 9/14 and then couldn't interview with PSU's preprofession committee for my LOR's until the end of Sept. I haven't heard back from any schools yet 🙁 Everyday seems like an eternity waiting haha.

I was thinking about getting secondaries into WVCOM & New England, but I'm not sure if it's even worth it this late in the game...

Congrats to everyone who has already been accepted! And good luck to all of those who have yet to interview!

The rejections keep rolling in for me and I thank God every day that I have that 1 acceptance. Yes, I've received the "consider other careers" message in letters, phone calls with adcoms post-rejection, e-mails from "advisers" etc. Wrong!

Underdog or overachiever, it only takes one.

P.S. Apologies to fellow club members for my lack of posting here. We're all evidence that there is more to an application than numbers. Keep fighting!

No matter what, rejections always sting.

I'm fortunate in that so far I've only received 3 post-secondary rejections. 12 more schools to hear from but thus far I've been incredibly fortunate with my results this cycle. It would surprise me to hear from any more actually but at this point it doesn't make a difference to me I suppose.

At least you've got the one acceptance and the one pending pain! Thats better than a large portion of applicants, we're ahead of the curve at this point.

Just interviewed at LECOM-E this past weekend and loved it! I hope I get in. Additionally, Touro-NV interview invite for December 6 (3rd invite).

Do you mean WVSOM? If I remember correctly, they only give out secondaries to those who are offered interviews.

I got a similar letter telling me to look into their MPH and allied careers. Oh well, I feel your pain Dr. Yiot! Pretty much on hold at every school until my new mcat score comes in (which is in Jan so goodbye Fall 201🙁). I can't wait to get all my stuff in early and ready Day 1 of next cycle!

I also got a rejection from VCOM-CC, but what was funny was that they said "Thanks for interviewing Mzeep but we cannot offer you a place in our class blah blah blah". Yeah never interviewed here, but thanks anyway. At least they didn't tell me to look into different careers.
YEAH i AM GETTING THAT FEELING TOO BUT i AM DEBATING TO EITHER RETAKE MCAT TO IMPROVE MY 25 OR TAKE MORE UNDERGRADUATE CLASSES OR DO A POST BACH PROGRAM. NOT SURE AT THIS POINT, STILL EARLY IN THE SEASON, PLUS IM ON HOLD AT SO MANY SCHOOLS FOR MY GPA. THANKS FOR THE ENCOURAGING WORDS MAN.

lol, got that same letter from nova, its a pretty classless move on their part that they would essentially tell us to pack it in when they know nothing about us beyond our primary apps.
TRUE THAT. ALTHOUGH THE REALLY KIND ONE FROM DMU MAKES ME WANT TO GO TO THIER SCHOOL EVEN MORE, KIND OF LIKE A GF WHO BREAKS UP WITH YOU BUT SAYS ITS NOT BECAUSE OF YOU AND THAT MAKES YOU WANT HER MORE LOL. NOW I WISH I COULD GO TO THAT SCHOOL, THEY SEEMED PRETTY CLASSY TO ME.

yeah I'm surprised you guys read the whole letter, my rejection letter from Chicago I just read the first few lines to make sure I was rejected and when I did, I just tossed it (ripped it actually first to make myself feel better).
WAS THINKING OF DOING THAT BUT KEPT READING IN HOPES THAT THE LAST SENTANCE SAID "PSYCH, GOTCHA BITCH, JUST KIDDING COME AND INTERVIEW NEXT MONTH!"

Blueflower-Congrats on your Touro-nv interview!!! Good Luck! Good Luck at RVU too🙂

PSUDoc.......hang in there.

Interview invite #4 today!!! VCOM called today. So far, KCOM, SOMA, RVUCOM, VCOM.

I have only interviewed at RVU so far and am about positive that is where I will end up. Family in CO outweighs school rank for me. Besides, I LOVED the students, faculty, staff, curriculum, and facility.

For those just joining this thread I will repost my underdog stats here:

cGPA: 3.65 (Last cycle it was 3.55)
sGPA: 3.47 (Last cycle it was 3.27...I only retook one 3 credit course and added a 3 credit course with both being A's)
MCAT 2009: 6PS, 8VR, 7BS
MCAT 2010: 5PS, 9VR, 10BS (arghhhh.....not sure how I managed to do worse in PS)

I was complete last year in mid Nov: NO interviews, 6 pre-interview holds
I was complete 2nd week Sept this cycle: 4 interviews, 3 rejections, 2 holds, still waiting on 3 schools.

Hope this helps some people. It is so nice to post stats in this thread and not get flamed for it. It is such a long process and it is great to have so many encouraging people here. THANK YOU ALL😉!!!

i don't understand the purpose of giving so much attention to rejections. open it, laugh about it, toss it, move on. let it go.

Congrats to you too CrissX! And thanks for always being so motivational/helpful here on SDN. 🙂

I thought I'd share this since I found it to be funny and sad all at the same time. at work today, ER, I was talking to a few of the nurses about medschool and one of the nurses walks by and asks where I'd like to go and I said Western and she says "thats just a DO though", and I said "and???????????" , she follows by saying (I can't believe how ignorant some people are especially for someone that works in a hospital!!!) "but are you a real doctor?". At this point I'm shocked, and sorta speechless, but I say "yeah they are real doctors", and start listing the 10-13 physicians on staff who are DOs, including one of the ER docs that SHE works with everyday! Then she asks "are their pay the same?" at that point I just decided to walk away! I'd expect that from maybe someone out in the middle of nowhere land, but for a nurse that works with physicians (MD/DO) to say that, I was kinda shocked.

heh yea it is sad, and a lot of it depends on where you're from. I don't know where you're from, but take CA for example. We have a ton of MD schools, so most people expect Drs to be MDs. I've faced many nurses who scoff at DOs, calling them "fake doctors." On the other hand, if you go to somewhere like AZ, they have more DO schools than they do MD. Many people (nurses, patients, etc.) regard DO as the main type of doctor. So it just really depends on where you go, but people and their ignorance will never cease to amaze us all.

Ironic that those fake doctors over power her decisions and do the real medicine while she does the crap work.

He's from CA too, as am I. I've actually had the opposite response to DO. All of the nurses I've spoken to have been supportive of me being a DO, many of which have said "if i went to med school I would want to go DO". The only one that had anything bad to say was one who was complaining about Western's tuition b/c her daughter wants to go to vet school there

yeah, I mean I've worked here forever and all the nurses know there are no differences between the two and if anything the only thing that they complain about the DO physicians are that they order a ton of test becuase they want to know everything thats wrong with the patient (which I think is great), but that one nurse was absolutely ignorant! I kinda wish the ER doc thats a DO was there so I could have just said out loud to him that this nurse doesn't thing you are a real doctor and watch Him rip her a new one!

lol that woulda been interesting to watch ...

anyway, i think i've met the most ignorant ones in large hospital settings, like pomona hospital, which is where i volunteered @ for ~8 years. i love it there, but most of their docs are MDs so sometimes the nurses get on their high horses. but when i shadow in small clinics or private practices, the DOs and MDs have always been treated the same.

woww they have a vet school too?! western has everything! osteopathy, podiatry, optometry, etc. etc.

They have one of only a couple of vet schools in California. I think the only other one is at Davis and maybe one at Cal Poly.

They also have Dental. There were Dental interviews when I was at my interview. Listening to the two very attractive girls that were walking in front of me, they both had already had interviews everywhere from UCLA, U$C, Creighton, etc. I was intimidated until I realized they were Dental and not DO

Western really is a fairly comprehensive health sciences campus. Various masters degrees, nursing (RN, NP, MSN), OD, DO, PharmD, DPT, PA, DPM, DVM (vet), DMD. I'd say they encompass most of who you are going to run into working in the health field.

I'd be intimidated too, thats pretty funny! I hear you can always tell who are the dental students on campus cuz they have to always be dressed up.

Ya I was like :scared: until we walked in the same time and they went to the Dental check-in. That was a huge relief lol I was so confused why they were interview at Western if they had the stats to get those kinds of MD interviews. They would have had to be supremely interested in DO

Interview went well though, hopefully I'll hear something by next week. They were non-committal about when the adcoms were meeting to discuss our files. There were only 16 of us though so I can't imagine it would be an incredibly long meeting. Hopefully I get in so I can have some options 👍 They don't want us calling for our results unless it affects other deposits/interviews. I've got an Erie interview on the 14th of Nov that I don't plan on attending anyway so it will help me out after all  I had to cancel KCOM's interview that was supposed to be Thursday though 🙁 I ran out of funds if I don't want to be in massive debt over the holidays due to the deposit on the 15th of Dec. Hopefully I don't wind up regretting that one in the future, although I can't say I will already holding an AZCOM acceptance.

Not saying you won't find out next week, but it took longer than two weeks for some people that interviewed on 9/23 and 10/07. I know I'm still waiting, but I guess they're just really busy.

Ya I know, I saw you guys waiting it out. They told us that letters would be mailed at the latest in 2 weeks. They also said we could call before that time if we had an interview we'd like to cancel. I'll be calling next week to find out what I can, thats for sure lol

We were told the same thing about the letters, but they apparently haven't been sent out yet.

I tried using an upcoming interview as a reason to get my decision, but that wasn't enough 😕 Luckily I have an acceptance, and used that, but they haven't made a decision on my file yet so it didn't even matter.

Western is so behind this year, last year my friend heard from them two weeks after submitting her secondary which she submitted on Oct 15! They are killing me!

Weird, I asked specifically if there was any way to have our result over the phone. They said that they would do it if we had an interview we'd cancel or a deposit for another school. I have both so I'll ask them about either  Honestly if they mail letters the day they make a decision I'm going to get the letter the next day anyway so its not gonna make much of a diff regardless.

Ahh this is not a good day, got put on hold at KCOM (one of my top 3) until my OChem grades are in (lab is done, got an A to replace a C (think thats what i had off top head) and 3/5th done the course). It sucks because I wont be done until December and by than, I have ZERO chance as someone with a 3.1 (well 3.2 if i get an A) and 30 MCAT. Sad day for me as an underdog🙁

UNDERDOG= ACCEPTED LECOM ERIE ISP!

Stats: 24 9 vr 8 bio 7 ps 3.25 GPA

Hey underdogs.. I wanted to post this to you guys. I posted it in the Kaplan MCAT forum but didn't get an answer... so I'm hoping one of you took the Kaplan prep class and can help haha.

I am getting ready to start a Kaplan online course and am a little worried.. especially about my PS score. I took Gen Chem my Freshman year and I am currently taking the first semester of Physics. I don't feel as though I will remember too much from Gen Chem (esp. the math problems and formulas) and I know I will not know too much Physics since I just started. What should I expect on the diagnostic for PS?? I know the diagnostic is especially tough, so I am pretty worried about what will happen (even though it doesn't mean too much)

I would brace yourself for a bad PS diagnostic score. Don't freak out though. Study hard and you will do fine, I did Kaplan and the PS section ended up being my strong suit after being my clear worst when I started. I was 4 years out of GenChem and I studied hard and I owned it. Physics was a bit harder for me but memorize the formulas they give you for the Kaplan class and study hard and you will be fine. Don't freak out about a possible bad score. Use the score as motivation to study your ***** off.

Officially an underdog here:
cGPA-2.85
sGPA-2.9 (maybe 3.0 after this semester)
MCAT-27 (10vr, 9bs, 8ps)

Filled out primaries in mid August and a few secondaries mid September but I'm only complete at MSUCOM so far since I'm still waiting on letters from my science profs.:scared:

hey guys, figured I'd post in here since I'm in the same boat as y'all.

I've got a 3.3 sgpa and 25 mcat.

So far I've got an interview at an md school and vcom-cc!

and pretty much "under review" at all the others

i know it will probably be a miracle if i get in this cycle but here are my stats:

2.89sGPA 2.93cGPA

currently retaking a C in cell bio and taking orgo 2 lab. so far i am expecting an A in cell bio and B+ in orgo 2 lab. this will bump my stats by the end of the semester to:

3.07sGPA 2.99cGPA

mcats are not great:

8/09 - 20M - 8, 6, 6
7/10 - 24P - 9, 7, 8
9/10 - 25P - 10, 7, 8

i kno i could've done a lot better the past 2 times but for whatever reason choked. i was averaging high 20's easily and hit 30 a couple times.

i'm a non-trad applicant with degree in business and spent 3+ years working in physical therapy as an aid. shadowed a doctor for 100+ hours and have a lot of volunteer hours in the community.

i'm not sure what to do at this point as i wait on responses from schools. nycom is my dream school and it will allow me to continue some of my volunteering. i mentioned this in my secondaries.

would sending an addendum saying ill retake the mcat in january boost my chances any? let me know what you guys think.

NYCOM is probably a stretch. They've been blowing stats out of the water the last few years.

With that said, if you get the sGPA over 3.0, you're in a much better boat than < 3.0. A lot of schools cut me out for being at a 2.8 sGPA.

The schools where I've interviewed have loved my outside life experience (working in healthcare, previous work as a journalist) and focused on that more than my sub-par grades and slightly-above-average MCAT (28Q).

If you've indicated on AACOMAS that you are re-taking the MCAT in January, they should know you are going to take it again. However, that may automatically put you in the "on hold for re-review" pile. The classes may fill up while they wait, and a better score isn't guaranteed. Of course, it may help you because they won't look at the 2.89 now but hopefully a 3.01 later.

Don't get too hung on NYCOM. There are plenty of good schools around the country. Admissions is a game; play a broad set of schools.

just got an md interview at siu-som.

congrats everyone on the acceptances/interviews:luck:🙂

ACCEPTED to Western Univeristy- Lebanon !!!

Never give up hope. I was waitlisted at Lecom.. and havent had any other interviews besides lecom and western. But I was accepted.. Inaugural class and all. So never give up hope!!!!

siu as in southern illinois?? if so awesome man, and really weird at the same time because i think we both have interviews at siu and vcom-cc lol.

thanx for your advice. i'm trying to weigh the benefit of telling the schools that i'll be taking the january mcat but that will delay my app until late feb or early march once my scores come out. which would you guys rather do?

so surprised, KCUMB interview invite. & on my birthday... this is developing into a good week for me.

good luck underdogs! we can do it!🙂

...and I just got rejected from Western post-interview...****ing **** 🙁
