The Underdog Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Dunno  My GPA seemed to work against me last year to the point of no acceptances so I didn't think that 1 or 2 more courses would make me suddenly competitive.

What was your AACOMAS cGPA and sGPA last year? And when did you apply?

I am curious because I have somewhat similar stats. (3.11 cGPA, 3.15 sGPA, 32 MCAT...am I an "underdog"? I hope not)

Great Thread

I am not applying until next cycle, when i finish my pre-reqs, volunteer more, shadow, MCAT etc....soooooooooo, seeing as how I am kinda new to SDN (long time e-stalker) and im not applying yet can i be added as a SUPPORTER....or maybe a FRESHMAN MEMBER, then next year graduate to FULL MEMBER? Yall tell me...ill take WATERBOY (girl) too....

Go TEAM!

I'm already exhausted from this non-sense. Maybe I'll have more energy for this thread after I retake the mcat july 8. I can already see myself drinking again at 8pm during the week once september comes around

Last years stats were
cGPA: 2.80
sGPA: 2.79
MCAT: 33

Looks like apps were released to schools on 9/24 with secondaries being completed between 10/22-11/24... wow I was pretty late last year  Shouldn't have waited for my MCAT score after taking the June 18th test.

This year I want to be complete at every school I apply to before the end of July, I think thats easily doable.

as Winston Churchill once said: "Never, ever, ever, ever Give UP!!"

Hey guys/girls, I remember being in your position not too long ago (as you'll soon find out). I was quite a long shot and even thought that I would take the GRE this summer to apply for PT schools (I kid you not, I was shadowing a PT and all). I can only stress don't give up.

My Story:
I am a reapplicant, but I did receive 2 interviews last year (PCOM and LECOM-E) with a 3.5 gpa/22O (6, 7, 9) MCAT. I was placed on the waitlist and waited the long summer to get my rejection. I did an 18-week internship at a Philadelphia oncology practice/cancer center in July-November. I did receive one publication 2nd author and one tentative publication from this. I also got incredible clinical experiences from surgeries, shadowing in the practice and hospital, attending resident conferences and rounds...it was pretty amazing. During this, I took a Kaplan course to up my MCAT. It was horrible, but that is for a different discussion. I upped my MCAT on the January MCAT to a whopping 24O (6, 9, 9). I was then unemployed, but not for lack of trying. Until I finally got a job at... :barf: Petsmart. At this point, it was late March and I had not received word from anyone. I will be honest, I lost ALL hope. But then, in later March, I received an email from an angel with the initials of A. R. She said, "Congratulations, you have been accepted for an interview at LECOM." It was a pinhole of light in the dark. I reached through it grabbed on tight, though. My interview was for 4/29 and I figured it was for a WL spot but who cares, I am gonna give it my all. Of course, I was sick on my interview day, which might have helped, makes me memorable ya know . I than waited for my letter...waitlisted. Although I knew it was coming, it still stung, but it meant there was still hope. I decided that I would make sure they knew who I was, so I sent a letter of intent (it was basically the best decision of my life) to a few important people in admissions. A little more than a week later...ACCEPTED. My fiance came into Petsmart with my letter and told me to open it lol. My boss was like, so I guess this is your two weeks notice haha.

My Advice:
Many(most) of you will not be accepted this year. Sometimes we underdogs are not always looked upon too well the first time around. If that is the case, do everything you can to make yourself STAND OUT. Look for internships, research, post-bacs and definitely retake the MCAT. It shows persistance which is key to underdogs. You guys know what you need to do to get accepted. You have seen the "stats" and know the hard work that you made harder by not being at the top. I am not going to say that most of you will get in this year, my main message is DO NOT GIVE UP!!!

Now my time is spent staying up really late on SDN writing pseudo-motivational pieces because I have no worries for the next month. 😀

PS. I never claimed to be a motivational speaker lol.

GOOD LUCK!!! I will be rooting for and following your stories closely

Try to grab the princeton books for cheap online from craigslist or something. I basically just studied a lot more / harder the 3rd time around (did a lot more bio studying/memorizing from those books, I got a 6 in BS the 2nd time and went up to an 11 the 3rd time lol).
Thanks. Im back to work!

Oh true. Yeah, I bet being complete in late October/early November probably hurt you.

Did you get any interviews at least last year?

Take heart....I know someone with a 24 MCAT and cGPA of ~ 3.4 who is going to med school this fall...and actually another with 26 MCAT and same ~ GPA also. So it can be done....just don't give up!

Touro-NV and LECOM-B

LECOM's interview I didn't feel went all that well, still waitlisted but haven't heard i'm in their "top 20" so I'm not holding my breath. Touro's interview I thought went better but wound up on the mid-waitlist so I won't be getting in.

So AACOMAS updated for me today with my released app, so I'd like the chief underdog to update the first post please 😀.

Front page newly updated, loving the advice so far. Hope everyone is working on their secondaries / waiting for your primary to be verified. Make sure your application is in early!!!

Aaah!

This is scaring me. It is starting to feel like nobody looks at the official stats AACOMAS releases except for me and a few others. The average DO matriculant, once again, has a 26 MCAT (median = 26, average = 26.19, StD = 3.2) and 3.48 GPA.

I would only barely consider the 24/3.4 to be an underdog, and I would not consider the 26/3.4 an underdog at all.

Yes! Why do people keep posting misinformation and messing with people like that? Checking the AACOM stats would do everyone on this board some good. It would ease the minds of the worriers and (hopefully) slow down these folks who think that unless you have a 29/3.7 that you have absolutely no shot at med school.

Totally agree with the stat checking comment.

Disagree with second comment. Yes stats could be good, but if they are socially ******ed...they are an underdog lol. Assuming they are socially adequate, then yes they can take that trash somewhere else

I am pretty sure I fit on this thread. I have a 3.4 cGPA but barely a 3.0 sGPA. I receive my MCAT score in two days :scared:!!! But, coming from my practice test scores I assume I will still be welcome here. Good luck to everyone getting their applications ready to send in/waiting to be verified. I am submitting the end of next week I hope!

I just wanted to wish everyone luck, and tell you not to be discouraged. Believe me, there are people in my class, in A LOT of classes, with stats similar to yours. It's really easy for people to say "oh my God, why would you ever apply with less then _______". Always remember, these schools have AVERAGES they take people above AND below.

I'd like to put myself down as an "official supporter"

Good luck :luck:

Anyone else get their score today from the 5/22 MCAT? I am pretty disappointed with mine, yet not at all surprised because I definitely knew I BOMBED the PS section!! Oh well, retake.

Tell me about it.....24O (7V/8PS/9BS)....cmon seriously verbal???? anyway, I'll be back at it on Aug 4th, the good news is, I'm submitting my primary next week and prob won't be verified until then anyway, so at least if there's improvement they'll see the new set of scores instead of outright rejecting me, plus i'll actually be done with my pre-reqs before taking the test again

I hear you guys. Does anyone else feel like they do well on Verbal if it is something that interests them, and terrible if a passage doesn't interest them? I know this is general but as I review practice tests I find that I get 100% or close on 5-6 passages that somewhat interest me and then one passage I get 3-4 wrong and my score goes from a 12 to an 8.

This thread is fairly good at boosting confidence.

I am a non-trad. Taking classes again after a year or two off and working full-time as a paramedic. My first attempt(s) at college were pretty abysmal and it frustrated me. I just couldn't concentrate or stay motivated more than a few minutes. I ended up going to my PCP to see if I had something wrong physically or psychologically. Turns out my psych testing showed very poor results and they said I had ADHD. I was always skeptical on the idea of ADHD honestly but I did some research and agreed to take the medication and follow some guidelines to help me move forward.

I retook my science classes (4 or so) and now have a 3.8 sGPA and a 3.4 cGPA. I have yet to take my MCAT. Actually I just applied to a PA program but am having second thoughts after reading so much on here. I have great ECs and previous HCE. Maybe I should reconsider and give DO school a shot.

ADHD is a very real thing from the little I learned about it in a neuroscience course.

With a good MCAT, you are obviously fine. With a great MCAT, you could even apply to MD schools.

With the way allopathic schools do retakes the sGPA would be low 3.1ish and cGPA would be 3.0ish. So maybe with a stellar MCAT but DO seems the best route and chance. Working as a paramedic has been a blessing that I have gotten the chance to meet many physicians and I will tell you from my experience, there is no difference between MD and DO. I just know being a physician was always my dream. May need to pull back that PA application.

Bump for a great thread!!

Just a random thought. I got cut off from most of the MD schools I applied to because of my low undergrad GPA. they woudlnt even bother to recognize all my years of clinical experience and all the academic advances I had made. So fck em! They dont want to recognize that...then why the hell would I want to go there anyway!

Keep your heads up guys!

I can say it's not all about grades, but they do weight heavy on getting you noticed at the admissions office. However, your personal statement, your volunteer work, your shadowing experience, and your LORs can help bolster your application. It can turn an average app into a very appealing one. Though I do suggest if you have any Cs in a science class, retake them if you can.

My bachelor's is in Fine Arts, and my grades were good. cGPA is 3.67, sGPA is a 4.0. (Got a lot of Bs in art believe it or not, lol) However, my MCAT was low, a 24. IMO, stress can make or break that test. I shadowed a Family Practitioner for 7 months, had 3 months of volunteer work at a free clinic, and some really great professors who wrote amazing LORs. I still didn't think I had a great chance, but applied last cycle anyhow. I applied to 8 schools. I got secondaries from 4, with 1 interview and 1 acceptance. So, I was extremely lucky. And with that, I wish the best of luck to all of you. If you have any questions about my experience, PM me.

Also, if you plan to go HPSP, contact a recruiter earlier.

You should update the first post with each person's interview invites or a link to their MDapps where others can find it.

Welcome to the underdog thread. Check my post in the what are my chances thread and then post this same thing in the what are my chances forum. You will get a better response there.

Just curious...when GPAs are posted here without designation, do you mean your science, non-science, or total GPA.

AACOMAS calculates all three, so I was wondering which everyone was talking about...(especially those listed on the first post of the thread)

I generally go by science GPA since that is the most important IMO. Its assumed for the most part that cGPA and sGPA are what matter and that the non-science GPA is basically glanced at before moving on.

Mine is listed as a 3.0 because thats about what my sGPA will be after summer, my cGPA will still be about 2.9x. Different people give different GPAs

I have been posting the higher of either Sci / Overall. For example mine is my overall, my science is lower.

hi u-dawgs. i'm jumping on the ship! cGPA 3.21, sGPA 2.76, nsGPA 3.75. waiting on my 6/17/10 MCAT. good luck to us all! 😀

as a definite underdog who is now off of the waitlist and into a medical school add me to the list of official supporter!!!

underdog to CCOM?! impressive! mind sharing your stats?

Good luck to all of you Underdog Applicants this cycle! I'll be paying attention from the shadows as I'm not applying quite yet, but my time is drawing nigh and I'll be soon an Underdog Applicant. Current stats: cGPA: 3.25, sGPA: 3.06. Yep, not great but very strong ECs from being a Paramedic (more of a PA really) in Iraq and being a Medic/EMT for 10 years, as well as Volunteer Experience with a Disaster Response team and youth work.

Again to all the applicants this cycle, good luck, I know it's possible know of two "underdogs" that were accepted so it is possible!
