OK, I am confused. I thought that schools did not get data from AMCAS antil around July 1. So how are people getting secondary applications already. Does AMCAS provide a list of where people have applied before then? I guess that would allow schools that don't screen for secondaries to send out emails, etc? If so, that means AMCAS must be providing names and contact info--but not the whole application?

No, there were a group of people who were verified on the 14th, who received secondaries on the 23rd (about 7 days later). They were obviously in the first batch, if there wasn't a group who got secondaries earlier. I don't think the ad coms start meeting to look over completed applications until July (or mid-July) but obviously if you got a secondary sooner you had an advantage in getting your materials in sooner.

I was verified on the 23rd and have not received any secondaries. I am working on some prewrites though.

NO confusion. In prior years AMCAS did not provide your data to schools until a few days after July 4. This year it got moved up. Schools that get preliminary application data (name, address, phone, email address only) began to receive that information two days ago. Schools will also get the verified applications if they have been verified, or will get them once verified from this point on.

Thanks for the info. I was thinking there was no real hurry to add the additional schools I wanted to apply to "post MCAT" as the schools would not get the data unil early July--It seems I was wrong. I will get to adding them today! My application was verified 2nd week of June with about 7 school listed...need to add more. 👍

I finally started to REALLY work on some seconday essays...:sigh:

So, how long exactly does it take to get the AMCAS verified after you have submitted it.

3 to 5 weeks . . . dang I was hoping for 1 or 2 that makes me sad/anxious

speaking of food: I was supposed to go out for Ethiopian tonight but my babysitter bailed (stupid unreliable grandparents...) so then my husband said we could get Thai. But then he bailed. So, I made curry and my son ends up knocking it off the stove and I've got this huge curry mess everywhere. I finish cleaning it up and it turns out it stained the floor! my kitchen looks like a crime scene or something. And I'm hungry!

Ok, as for secondaries: I just turned in my OSU secondary and had my letter service send the letters. I am itching for Pitt's secondary. I am working on the Yale online one. Blah. I am depressed thinking about the application fees... 😱

It definitely sounds like you had a rough night. Just look at it this way, for every bad night, you are bound to have one awesome night--so maybe a crappy night tonight will equate to an OSU acceptance letter 😀

BTW--the peanut butter capt crunch owns all!

Is anybody else adding schools that they are not really sure about, just to sort of 'be sure' of getting a spot--as if anything is sure in this process. Folks say to apply to all schools in your state--what if you are not enthusiastic about some of them for reasons of location, overall quality, or lack of emphasis on areas of interest (e.g. primarily a primary care emphasis when you are interested in radiology or anesthesia). My stats are far above the averages for these two places but I just am not enthusiastic about them. Am I crazy or delusional for hesitating to apply? There are a number of OOS schools on my list for which my stats are very competitive. Any thoughts? Second guessing is the pits.

Hey there Ladybug!
I'm applying to some schools I'm wishy washy about just to round out my list. I'm applying to all my state schools even though some I'm not enthusiastic about. Remember, if you apply and then decide not to interview because you already have an acceptance you're not out much money for that peace of mind.

What is your home state?

None of us can really be sure of anything. I'm applying to all TX schools, even Galveston, about which I'm really not enthusiastic -- but I'm even less enthusiastic about not getting into med school this cycle.

Michigan

Ah - well there are tons of OOS schools with good acceptance rates. Just make sure you apply to a broad range to ensure good interview invites.

You're above the averages to Mich? Good job!!

Did anyone see the movie Supersize Me or read the book Fast Food Nation?

I haven't visited a fast-food restaurant since then, its been like two years

They showed Supersize Me on the BBC when I was living in Belfast. I thought I was going to be ill. Everyone at work harassed me about American food for a week.

Heh. Because every American eats 3 fast food meals a day. Right everyone? 😛

Not just 3 fast food meals, but 3 Biggies/SuperSize/Grande fast food meals.

Haha you'd be surprised...

all throughout highschool I used to eat Taco Bell like twice a day during the summer, no lie - I was completely addicted and no one cooked in the household

I find it amusing that the university side of my campus has its own dining service and students must go to the medical center food court to satisfy their trans-fat, MSG, and high fructose corn syrup cravings. Mmm, it's getting close to dinner time.

Was anybody else just watching that Portugal-Netherlands game? So many yellow cards, I thought it was going to be 6-on-6 before the game ended. 😱

Soccer would be more exciting if they made it 6 vs 6 and cut the field down smaller

Thanks! I've had a discouraging couple of days, so you made me smile. 🙂

How are the MSTP apps coming? Do you hear from them on about the same schedule that normal MD admissions happen?

It looks like I may need that money, too, because of my stupid professor.

😡 😡 RANT WARNING!!! 😡 😡

Will you guys forgive me if I rant for a minute? UT schools require 4 semesters of biology. I have 3. I was signed up for the fourth for the 2nd summer term. I told the professor that I would have to take the final exam early, because I had to leave town for my wedding. There are no other options -- I must take this biology class in order to be eligible for admission to my state schools. His reponse? Too bad. I don't make exceptions.

I told him, I'm a non-trad, I've done this before, I was deployed through the first half of p-chem for crying out loud and still got an A in that class, I'll pay the department for a proctor to give me the exam, it won't be any extra effort at all for you. His response? Basically, go fly a kite.

I'm going to e-mail UTHSCSA (probably my favorite TMDSAS school) and ask them whether they have the option of admitting me contigent upon future completion of one semester of biology, but it looks like this guy is going to prevent me from attending TMDSAS schools this year through sheer peevishness!

🙂 🙂 Okay, rant's over. 🙂 🙂

Will you guys forgive me if I rant for a minute? UT schools require 4 semesters of biology. I have 3. I was signed up for the fourth for the 2nd summer term. oh no, that really sucks! Do you have to have the 4 semesters before you can even apply? Hopefully they will consider letting you take it before you matriculate...I know some schools allow things like that in special circumstances.

That's good to know, though...I guess I can't apply to UTMB Galveston (their MD/PhD program has the PhD portion in UT Austin) since I only have 3 semesters of biology. I'd be doing the TMDSAS for only that one school, anyway, so maybe it's better this way.

MSTP / MD/PhD programs generally run under the same time schedule as MD-only admissions b/c all your application material has to be approved by the MD office as well. I am still working on my PS and other essays and hope to submit AMCAS by the end of this week.

Yay! Ownage is finally applying after being "on deck" for two years here on SDN.

::tear::

I am almost ready to press the submit button, but feel like the advantage I will get from polishing will far outweigh the advantage from turning it in a few days earlier. Any speculations?

To add to the fast food meta-thread: I ate McDonalds twice in one day, about two weeks ago. I haven't done that for years. But it's different in China. They have these signs asking if you are "beef enough" to eat this double bigmac. Mmm ... fast food.

Sorry to hear about that A-hole Professor. Karma's a bitch, and he'll get his someday.

I think that you just need those pre-reqs complete by matriculation, NOT application? Did your TMDSAS app. get bounced back or something? I think TMDSAS checks that you have all the prereqs, so if you have them listed as done, or to be done in the future, you should be OK.

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! Drop that A-hole's class like a bad habit and enjoy your wedding! I know that we all have a tendency to freak out during this whole application process, but I really think that you will be just fine (as long as you take the class sometime in the next year.)

Good Luck,

Jota

I just took a look at the UTHSC-SA Medical Applicant viewbook, and the wording that they use is:

"The following prescribed courses must be completed with at least a "C" grade prior to matriculation."

So it looks like you are OK for UTHSC-SA. I'll leave finding out the other schools' policies as "an exercise for the reader..." 🙂

(But I'm very confident that they are the same.)

I think you're right -- I should just calm down, focus on what's important, and take the class later. Thanks for helping keep me on an even keel. 🙂 I could develop a real tendency to over-react during this application process, if I don't nip it in the bud now! 😱

I think that's the policy at most TX schools.

Hey Pemb: what did you think of my PS?

It was fantastic! And just as well-written as I'd imagined. Seamlessly described experience, complete with little Pasternak-like bits of detail, and converted experience into motivation. The adcomms will be eating out of your hand (knock on wood) 👍

Aww just the kind of sweet flattery I was fishing for. Thanks!!

Just what I needed because I just put my cute little nephew on a plane this morning. 🙁 Now who will keep my mind off waiting for secondaries?!?

What a punk professor 😡 Schools that I have contacted about pre-reqs in the past said that you must complete them before MATRICULATION, not necessarily by the time you apply. So I think you will be ok :luck:

Edit: BTW Grats on your upcoming wedding Pemberly!!!

When is the wedding Pemberley? 🙂

August 5th!! I'm obviously all emoticonish right now. 😍 😍 😍
It'll be relatively small, about 40 guests, close friends and family, and they're coming in from all over. I can't wait to see people -- almost everybody I really hoped would come is going to!

I think it's pretty much impossible for you to calm down on your own right now with Medical School applications AND an upcoming wedding. Applying to Medical School and Planning a Wedding have to be the two MOST nerve-wracking things, period.

(But probably two of the most worthwhile! Assuming we get into Med. School, of course!)
