I never thought I would have warm fuzzy feelings for anything New Jersey government-related, but I do now. Apparently, the recipe for liking everything Jersey is moving to New York.

I swear it would have been easier to sell my car at the bridge and buy a new one rather than reregister it in New York.

New York Board of Pharmacy scared me to the point where I would rather drive two hours one way to New Jersey for my part-time pharmacy job.

The taxes are outrageous.

Government employees don't know what they are talking about and contradict one another even on the simple straightforward questions.

To add insult to injury, my car insurance company calculated my rate to be double what it was in new Jersey, and NJ is far from the cheapest states as far as car insurances go.

Perhaps I should have waited for a Jersey job to come up instead of taking one in New York, however intersting an opportunity it might be. 🙄

Feel free to share your bureaucracy horror stories. Maybe it will make me feel better. 😀

No state income tax where I live. Thank you Texas...I love you! 😍

The worst Bureaucrat is "women-complaining-and-nagging" department.

I tell you that it is the worst one.

That's only 'cause so many of us live with men.

Industry, I can't agree more; NY is just outrageous, and for our profession it seems you don't get a commensurate bump in pay to make upfor the higher living costs. I know a few people in NYC that work for big ad firms and magazines and they are making some good $, but d/t the expense of the city they are struggling to get ahead. It's too bad, NYC is definitely awesome, however I personally would prefer to just visit. I'm more than happy living where I am, where the disparity between my income and the median are far greater than ny, ca, and most of the northeast. Plus I totally agree w/ z, that you can have it even better if you go where there is no state income tax, so long as you don't negate the savings by buying too big of a home, as these states are often notorious for higher property taxes (though they may still not exceed the northeast)

There are so many hidden expenses too. The NYC public schools suck, and the private schools cost a fortune if you plan on having more than one kid. The few good public schools are in neighborhoods that cost $2 million for a cramped two bedroom with high condo fees. And even those schools are overcrowded. The only reason the kids do better in those public schools is because they have parents who are willing to overextend and sacrifice everything (like buying a 2 million dollar dump) for their kids. Not really because the schools are any special themselves.

Hopefully this isn't the future of gentrified America. Makes all the cons of suburbs tolerable.

name some cons of suburb.

No state income tax where I live. Thank you Texas...I love you! 😍
Is that a compensation for pain and suffering inflicted by having to, you know, actually live in Texas?

It's not the money I am complaining about when it comes to New York (I live North of the City, too), but the sheer amount of paperwork required for just about anything. This is insane. 😡 Money has never been that important to me, as long as I have enough to live the way I want, but having to spend hours of my preciuos free time on crap I shouldn't have to be doing - now THAT bothers me.

What's wrong with living in Texas? In my travels, San Antonio is one of the best cities I've lived in

Shhhhhh.... keep it hush.. the last thing we want is migration of east coasters to TX.. they have no idea...

Don't worry, most people in the Northeast have zero-10% desire to live in Texas.

:meanie:

Good!

Let's keep it that way... tho I'm not liking the latest trend. In my travels, I chuckled a lot at the way Northeasterners would frown at my "I live in Texas" comment. They typically said "yuk...why would you want to live there..."

Though, it was B-more-Philly-NJ trip that got me lost in Philly... I was on the phone not paying much attention... I was on I-95 out of B-more..and back of my mind I thought I would end up in Newark if I stayed on I-95 because NJ-Turnpike is hmmm I-95. Well, you know what happens... I ended up in nowhere Philly area and couldn't get on NJ turnpike.

I bought a GPS.

Home is where you make it. But the culture of arrogance of NorthEastern folks is pretty funny.

Some years ago... was meeting with an Admin in Boston... evidently he spent sometime in San Antone in the military and was aware of the term "God's country" meaning Texas... This was right before the Pat's almost undefeated season finale... He asks me..."Where's the God's country?" I said..."Texas."

He said "NO, IT'S FOXBOROUGH!!"

Oh dear Karma!

:meanie:

Absolutely nothing besides climate and people. Which conveniently happen to be two of the three most important factors (for me personally) in choosing a place to live. 😀

Texans, don't take it too personally, the same goes for anywhere in the South, as well as California. 😀

And I am no East Coaster. I just happened to spend the last few years of my life on the East Coast. 😉 And I still can't forgive NYC for underwhelming me. The curse of having high expectations... that's why I keep them right at the floor level 99% of the time.

As for Pharmacy practice in my opinion and experience, many hospitals in NJ/NY including those self proclaimed world renowned hospitals had their pharmacy practice stuck in 1960's in terms of technology and clinical practice.. Ok..maybe 80's. But in their mind, they thought they were the world leaders..

Same goes for many West Coast hospitals.

You actually find people in NJ/NY pleasant?

:meanie:
As a matter of fact, I do find the locals to be quite nice and also more interesting on average than people from other parts of the country. By "interesting" I mean actually capable of supporting a conversation on the topics not related to the weather or immediate local challenges/events. 😛

And ultimately, people are pretty much the same anywhere in the world... though of course I have my favorites and my least-favorites. 😀

you mean there's more to talk about than cars, photography, fishing, sports, and big trees? Bah!

😍

 Okay, we have to hand it to our town bully for having the ______ to say this because I never ever would. When I go to those areas, I'm welcomed w/ three types of hospitality:
1) Shake missing extremity at me while asking for $ or selling pieces of hair out of a trash bag
2) Lick lips and try NOT to be subtle abt twisting neck to look at me from the back
3) Last but not least-shove slow KS girl out of the way because even though she has ran 5miles a day since 16, she STILL can't hold a candle to the pace required to keep said NYer/NJer from trampling her

What?

JINX!!! (you both owe me a coke) *all of us posting at same time* 😎

Genetically maybe... culturally no ways man! 😛
Oh, come on, deep down everyone wants the same things, wherether they are. The differences are just cosmetic. I thought you had gotten around enough to understand that. 😀

Sorry to break your heart. 😀

You still didn't answer the question about folks being "pleasant." You just said they can carry on a conversation... could mean y'all may be arguing over something as far as I know!

You live in a state that gave us George Bush for crying out loud. You fired the head of science education because she objects to intelligent design as a valid scientific theory. You live in a state where the majority of people believe people and dinosaurs were contemporaries, where the governor openly speaks of succession, where social studies books will now make sure we learn about Phyllis friggin Schlafly (like she is of any historical importance) and the slave trade will be called the "Atlantic Triangular Trade." I'm sure the cities are nice, but you guys have a conservative bent that is out of touch with reality.

How is is your kid ever going to understand bacterial resistance. It's a sad state of affairs when they get religion in school and have to be taught evolution at home...

You got lost in Philly? It's a shame you didn't know anybody who lives there who could have helped you out.:meanie:

Are you one of those gaggles of people who just block the sidewalks gawping at who knows what? 😀

See how Texas sun is detrimental to reading comprehension? 😀 Or is it the company of the Texans? 😀

Oh Oldie... don't you worry about our secondary education system...

4 out of top 20 in USNWR and 2 out top 5 in Newsweek.

As far as getting lost in Philly... It was more of how you guys designed your road system. I guess the road system in East Coast happened... you know..animal trail...native american trail... horse trail... then roads...then build around it... where as the urban planning in our area used a more logical system to build cities around well thought out planning.👍

This deserves a thread of its own. The deep down wants.. do you mean at our instinctual level? If so, I think genetic programming has much to do. But the cosmetic difference you speak of defines the individuality of everyone which is a learned behavior. How and what we learn vary so greatly even in same a culture that I believe it causes a divergence even down to the "want" level.

In some ways people are the same. But it's the differences in people is what makes the world interesting.

Are you one of those gaggles of people who just block the sidewalks gawping at who knows what? 😀

 Gosh no! I'm one of the types that pay $30 cab fare just to travel one block to prevent getting stomped on, but in the future, please swiftly scrape any of us non-locals off the sidewalk and at least throw us to the side, out of the line of fire! We are just WALKING for goodness sakes! LOL 😛

you mean there's more to talk about than cars, photography, fishing, sports, and big trees? Bah!

If you have time to find sources from the web to link here for your bullying purposes, then you have time to post some pics of these. 😎

But the ***** moved to Texas. He only got into Yale because of his daddy, being a solid C student and all..... He has his ranch and his cowboy boots. He drank the Texas kool-aid...

The difference between you and I is that I do not discuss politics and I believe W's comment of "President Obama deserves my silence" is an excellent idea.

I like the way you try to pawn off W...despite his East Coast connection...yet if you shared his political views, I bet you'd denounce his affiliation with Texas..

I like W...and like having him as a neighbor. And his dad's library is at my Alma Mater. Neat place.

We'll see in a few years when this crap has been injected into your kids...

Our Roads were designed?

We'll that's what happens when you are here from the beginning. You know the Declaration of Independence, The Constitution, The American Flag. That kind of stuff. We were busy inventing a country....

And I like Slick Willy too... I'd love to play a round of golf with him and kick his ass and call him out on his cheating. Need to go see the library in Little Rock!

mmmm... you actually believe everyone in TX are bible thumping rednecks don't you.. :meanie:

Our Roads were designed?

Evidently not.

And we thank you...so you're left with chitty roads and we have nice wide smooth logical grid system roads! :meanie:

Key to enjoying your company (anywhere) is to be well-rounded enough to carry a stimulating conversation with someone regardless of where they're from, where they live, occupation, etc.

I've observed that people who have a hard time relating or conversing with others, deeming them "uninteresting"...have a narrow point of view themselves.

No, he pawns off his Texas connection. He ran away from his Northeast roots. I thought his dad was an excellent President and unless Iraq turns into a flourishing democracy, history will relegate him to the dustbin of Presidents. He's a Texan through and through, go all in and ride it to the end. No second thoughts....

By the way, he had two political views, those he espoused to get elected and those he practiced as President.

He said: I am against Nation Building
He did: Nation Building as President

He Said: I am against deficits
He did: Took the nation from surplus to deficit

He Said: I am against growing government
He did: Pass the largest growth of government in History with NCLB and Medicare Part D.

I don't dislike him because he was a conservative. I dislike home because he was incompetent.

So my 2nd Sequoiadendron Giganteum germinated... I watered it once and it got mold... I'm going to have to delicately operate and find better soil...
