Seriously..can anyone come up with a good reason why there are 2 matches? It is obviously in the interest of the AOA, but it clearly limits applicants who are considering both sides of the coin. When it comes down to it it's all about where you fit best right? Doesn't seem to make sense to draw a line between matches. I'm sure some math whiz could probably figure out an algorithm to make it work. The current system is very frustrating.

problem is: who is going to control it? acgme? what's to prevent them from changing the rules a few years down the road to say that only lcme-accredited schools can participate?

Boohoo, I have so many interviews I don't know what to do 😉.

all of these programs are basically funded by the people's money, so why not have one arbitrary oversight group that could help ensure that money is being spent efficiently and being put to good use? aline the match dates and funnel it through the same system.

it's a bit off topic, but it seems completely asinine that the osteopathic profession graduates more students than they are capable of training. throw all of this separate but equal bs into the mix while excluding MDs from the AOA match, and what you have is a scenario that any outsider would simply laugh at and deem ridiculous... because it really is. Sounds like one big $hitstorm in the making as well. Unsustainable. (stepping down from soapbox).

Never gonna happen, it's just as bad as arguing that all doctors should be called MD's. The AOA won't let it happen, they like keeping DO's and everything pertaining to them separate from the allopathic world. Is it a pain in the butt for us students? Yes, but they don't care. They'd rather we matched into AOA residencies anyways.

Not saying it wouldn't be nice or doesn't make sense, cause it really would be and does. It's just never gonna happen.

You know there are more than 1 MD match systems, right? It isn't just an MD and DO match type deal.

You prob mad because some DO gen surg program already offered you a spot and you got a bunch of MD gen surg interviews lined up right? haha... what to do? go with the sure thing or take a chance that might not work out? good dilemma to have IMO

When do AOA matches go out and when do you have to commit (i.e. drop ACGME)?

You're removed from the NRMP when you match to an AOA program in February, not before.

Dissected's problem is he's a very, very competitive applicant.

and MD match day is later, right? so basically you have to take that gamble..... ouch

Have not been offered a spot anywhere. Too early for that kind of thing.

It's merely the fact that there are programs on both sides that are strong (in all specialties), and it would be nice to be able to rank them all together rather than the way it is set up now.

I would love it too but AOA wouldnt allow it. THey love it the way it is. I guarantee if ACGME came first, there would be far less DOs going into AOA residencies

This, and the AOA knows it. They are desperately trying to keep their own, and having a match that occurs earlier ensures they are able to do this.

It takes gargantuan gonads to skip your own match completely and go for ACGME only, especially in the more competitive fields. One match would be so nice.

You answered your own question.
The AOA acts to protect itself, not necessarily the interests of osteopathic students or physicians.

lol sooo...yeah it happened.

Lol! 😀

I was just debating on reviving this for the irony of it

should have quoted your other post but this was the one at the bottom. you mentioned more than one MD match? I had no idea you had more than one. How's that work? Obviously doesn't matter beyond curiosity

Some specialties are not handled through ERAS. I don't know all the specifics, but this is the primary reason that the NBME publications don't give stats on urology. There is some other system for the weewee docs (official term). The match days may very well coincide.... I have no idea about that. I believe there is also some west coast match system as well, but I cannot remember its name. ERAS/NBME/ACGME (The holy trinity :meanie: ) is the primary route to get into a residency. Unless I have totally missed something in whatever I picked up in other threads 😳

I think you are referring to the San Francisco match. San Fran is on the west coast, but this match is nationwide for Neurootology, Ophthalmology, and Plastic Surgery (I think it's plastic surgery fellowships, though..could be wrong. Have never looked in to it.). There's also a bunch of fellowships that go through the SF match.

The SF ophtho match is in January before the main NRMP match. I think the plastic surg. match is in May. Don't really know much about the fellowship matches.
