Manual labor is good for the mind and soul...plant a garden, build something. (This is the more serious advice 😉 )

this is ridiculously nerdy but...i love to knit. i just learned about a year ago and it is really calming! i swear i'm not like your grandmother.

I've got a large stack of English Comp and Technical Writing essays to grade which you are more than welcome to do. Additionally, I've got two research manuscripts and an ethics manuscript to write, as well as IRB documentation to compile. Help yourself! 😉

OMG! I was gonna say knitting when I saw the thread title.

Yeah, it keeps your hands busy, too...so you can't click "refresh" on SDN, either.:meanie:

I do have a cross stitch that I have been meaning to work on for a couple years. I think I will start it. Thanks guys.

I am in school full time but somehow that is not enough of a distraction.....

fantasy stock market. or, if you're good enough, the real thing. the only thing i check more compulsively than sdn is yahoo finance.

You know, I've been thinking of learning about finance and maybe investing a little money on the market. I don't mean thousands, but maybe a few hundred dollars, just hoping it grows (and hoping it doesn't shrink, lol).

Any good books you know of to learn about investing and stocks?

Well, whether or not you like him, Jim Cramer has put out several financial books that really start with investing at a basic level. I would advise against just blindly following his picks on the TV show (since everybody does, and as such they're impossible to make any money from), but the advice he gives in his books is good, solid, foundational knowledge. How to read a balance sheet, quarterly and annual reports, etc.

Also, anything by Peter Lynch. He was one of the Fidelity gods of investing over the past few decades, and he discusses at great length how he used common, basic, daily knowledge and observation as the source of some of his most profitable investment. He chooses investments in a similar manner to Warren Buffet - and they've both done, oh, alright for themselves. 😉

I run. A lot. It's very relaxing and helps me sleep (not to mention the health aspects).

Teleport yourself to last year and buy stock in Apple. You would have doubled your investment by now (no joke).

Though as a company, I now hate them for this silly iPhone locking business. They will die like Sony if they keep this up. (Content arm of company strangles the electronics division).

haha, the whole iphone fiasco makes me laugh. Even Nokia's making fun of apple. Did you get an iphone?

Writing a thesis....... 😴

We should all get together and have a knitting session.

i've compuslively cleaned my house like every third day...it takes my mind off of the computer for a couple hours...then I go outside and find random yard-work to do. "winterizing" my lawn, plants, etc...October 15th can't come fast enough.

/hoping my visit to vegas the following weekend can be celabratory...

it's pretty much a win-win, if not celebratory, you could just drown your sorrows 👍

I switched jobs--apparently to a crazy one and that really helped. I was getting emails and had forgotten that I had applied to these schools. Then I realized that it was October and had no interviews....hmmm.

Oh, no wonder you haven't been on as much. Hope the new job goes well.

I've been watching TV-links.

well, i work full time
but that definitely doesnt keep my mind off it

I suggest playing golf 😍

I'll move up to blankets as soon as I can afford a larger loom. (I'm a loom knitter -- no needles!)

nice! i've never tried out loom knitting. the university i'm working at offers a craft class on it and i was thinking of enrolling the spring. until then i'm sticking to my needles!

I cook. It brings other people around which really helps me stop thinking about med stuff. I love making pita bread and hummus. We should start some type of cookbook for premeds

Thanks...I didn't realize anyone noticed! It's going well...I think I've finally settled in and have more time for procrastination. Which means more time for obessing, but ah well.

I go biking, it give me time to clear my head, hammer out my rage, and get that sweet exhaustion feeling that makes you feel relaxed as hell.

Oooh, I love humus. I buy my pita bread though, how do you make it? Does it come out good?

Also, whats your receipe for the humus, do you also add olive oil to the mix?

I start my 3rd job in 2 weeks... 1 full-time, and 2 part time, work out for at least an hour every day and I teach ESL class once a week. I have to get out of the house and away from a computer.

FIFA 08 comes out next Thursday, thats what I'm waiting on...

haha, the whole iphone fiasco makes me laugh. Even Nokia's making fun of apple. Did you get an iphone?

Yeah, the whole locking thing really irks me too. I always paid a premium to get unlocked Treos. But I caved and got an iphone yesterday. My excuse was that it was for my health - I'll actually work out if I can watch tv on my phone while I do so (I live in a building with a gym). I walked into the apple store to buy a video nano ($199), and that somehow turned into an ipod touch because of the bigger screen ($299), and before I could get out of there I ended up buying an iphone ($399) instead.

I must say that it's an expensive distraction, but a good one. Now I can watch tv shows, podcasts, and other media (youtube??) on my phone instead of just checking email and SDN compulsively on it, which is pretty much all I have been doing during commutes and downtime. And now I can also obsess on finding just the right bluetooth, earphones, case, applications, etc. instead of constantly hitting refresh on my inbox.

mountain biking! fearing for my life usually takes my mind off more trivial things.
