Hi, the time is coming soon where I must pick a career and I would presume most of you on this forum are well educated or about to be M.D.s , P.A. , D.O.s etc.

Well I was told to go into family practice but, it really doesn't hold my interest.

I am in love with Biology and anything about Anatomy.

I was just wondering where and how far I could go and life.

I have a 3.95 GPA, well rounded student, in the foriegn language club *French*, play For our high-school Hockey team etc.

Is an Anesthesiologist a full M.D. or is it more of a highly qualified and respected nurse? I can't really find any information on the Job..

What should my Pre-Med Courses be? I was planning to Major in Biology and French.

What Colleges offer good Under-Grad Programs for med etc...????

-Thanks... I hope I got everything in there. More information would be much apreciated.

Please check the FAQ at the top of this forum, as well as the pre-med forum. You will find the answers to all your questions in there.

Seriously? I'll give you the benefit, and assume you really don't know. Yes an anesthesiologist is an MD, a highly specialized MD, in fact. Also, anyone who graduates med school is an MD, even those who don't do a residency.

Get in to med school first... that should be your focus.

btw, you play hockey, and study french? What happens during an ice fight... do you lob croissants across the ice until the player charges you, and then immediately surrender by laying down on the ice? The 2 seem incompatible if you ask me. :D
j/k

Bottom line: Any college with a good reputation and a solid history of students applying to med school would be a good place to go.

A college where most students interested in health end up applying to allied health fields (nursing, physical therapy, respiratory therapy, speech therapy, nutrition, etc) instead of medicine might leave you lacking the strong advising and support needed to apply to med school.

There are a handful of colleges that will hold a place in their affiliated medical school for you if you maintain a decent GPA during college. If interested in applying to one of these combined undergrad/medical programs as a high school student, do a little research on your own and dig up where they are. Most people in medical school don't go through this route. Most people on this forum didn't go this route (be forewarned, many have strong opinions but everyone is biased one way or the other, and few have both experiences to talk about).

Check out the pre-med board on this forum -- you'll probably learn more there.

You're bilingual with a 3.95 gpa.

If you play your cards right, you can get into med-school while exhaling a Benson & Hedges Menthol 100.

And in your off time, you may find a cure for cancer/AIDS/poverty.

The world is your oyster, Dr Jackal.

Selecting what specialty you practice your superiority is just an aside.

Make us proud.

After you get selected for college you can consider all of the below. You may find that the premed requirements aren't to your liking and you may end up with a different career. What about becoming a physician appeals to you? I hope it isn't the $$$ because then I'd seriously recommend getting a JD or MBA. ;)

Seriously, the world is your oyster. I wish I could be 18 again....young, dumb, full of... nevermind.

My undergrad institution had a pretty good premed advisor and I think many of the "upper echelon" institutions of higher learning do as well. If you have any interest in Brown, let me know and I can tell you about it.

Good luck,
PMMD

Thats a very philosophical question, I suppose the answer lies within your belief in either determinism or free will.

You ain't got what it takes to get into med school if you can't find out what training an Anesthesiologist needs to do their job. You better stick to nursing school son, they're the ones who run to MDs and ask "What do I do now, I looked for 2 seconds and can't figure it out on my own". Ask your Mommy Candyass...

Well I am sorry if I had insulted you. I was only looking for more information such more indepth exact procedures they may perform, work week, information (is it flexible? are the hours good? vacation time?) etc... You don't need to be blatantly rude about it...

- To everyone else thank you for the cordial information you have provided me.

Anesthesioly is just one career of many I have considered. I may or may not want to be a M.D. or even a D.O. later on.... I actually may want to be a nurse instead which is still a well respected job which should not be looked down upon.

-P.S. I'm sorry I didn't know everything 100% about an Anesthiesology... like you and I'm sure you didn't either when you were a young adult yourself.

-Thanks again.
