You guys have some pretty cool and unique experiences. I mean like cleaning up people's crap. I'd do it. Just so when I'm with my other friends and they complain about a hard day's work I can be like "well, I had to clean up a patient's s*** today" AND still be cool about it.

Gotta find a way to make that kind of thing okay to do. Make it funny too.

That's part of why I love medicine. What other profession has you helping people in so vulnerable a position?

No, but they let me do a whipple on a pt. 😉

The very first day of my volunteering... I was called into a room with one of the techs and had to clean feces off the floor, collect the soiled lines, and even help clean the guy off. He saw my name tag and knew all of my uncles and we started talking about my family for like 10 minutes as he stood there nude covered in his own feces. I will always remember this.

I am also able to perform EKGs while volunteering.

If you volunteer overseas, you get to do a LOT of stuff you would NEVER be allowed to do here.

I volunteered at some rural health clinics for the last few years and I've done/seen some craaazy stuff...I've delivered babies, given shots, done circumcisions, helped with autopsies...all with supervision of course, but rules over there are much more lax and they definitely need the help too. So after that, volunteering in a hospital back here in N. America was pretty tame lol
