What do you think?

I had originally intended to take Orgo 1&2 this summer. However, my circumstances have changed and I have a new option.

Should I take Orgo I & II (without labs) over the summer or A & P 1 & 2 (with labs)? In either case, they would be taken in 5 week semesters. I am very aware that both options will be tough, I just want to know which would be relatively easier.

thanks!

Both options will be very tough indeed. If you didn't take ur Dat yet, taking ochem 1 and 2 in the summer isn't the best idea.

I took Orgo I & II (with labs) over the last two summers and it's definitely tough. 5 lectures a week about an hour and a half long each. The nice thing about the summer is it's your only class and you can really immerse yourself in Orgo and studying, however the material will be condensed and you won't learn everything you may need to know for the DAT. Also, when the material is thrown at you that quickly, it's easy for it to go in one ear and out the other. As well as missing out on the freedom of summer and maybe not being able to work as much. With all that being said, I loved taking it in the summer. It lightened my course loads during the semester and allowed me to get good grades in both. Unfortunately, I haven't taken A&P so I can't speak on that.

Why are you taking A&P? Does your school require it or you are taking it fro your major/personal desire?

At least at my school it was a GPA killer and i avoided it since Dental schools are going to teach you their own anatomy and phys anyways.

It's required for a couple of the schools I will be applying to.

I see, that's unfortunate haha.

Well if i were in your shoes i would personally choose to take Ochem during the summer session, assuming it was done at the same 4 year institution. Organic chemistry was pretty straight forward for me, and i often felt as if it was slowly paced, so speeding it up for the summer wouldn't have been a problem. A&P is going to require way more of your time than Ochem will, so in my opinion it would be better to get that done over the course of a full semester.

Alternatively i would take A&P in the summer since it would be the only course taken. Also i would just work for the A, not to retain information since it's just a pre-req. With Ochem being on the DAT you might find it more beneficial to learn it over the course of a full semester so that you can retain the information better. It just depends on you, either could work.

These are literally the same exact two arguments I keep going back and forth with...

Ochem: one of the best and highest rated professors for first semester. The one teaching the second semester isn't liked - not that he's "hard," he just teaches very poorly.

A&P: I was actually looking at a community college since, like you said, it's not as important for the DAT (at least not as important as ochem) and it's only a prerequisites for a couple of the 12-15 schools I intend to apply to.

I would take a and p in the summer PERSONALLY. Just get an A haha

I would have said Orgo 1 or 2 during the summer if you said WITH lab. Lab takes a lot of time and is basically like a another class. If you can't take Orgo labs also in the summer, take A & P. This way you'll be taking four classes instead of two in the summer. This way during the school year you won't have to take as many classes with a full schedule, and you'll have more time to do the extra stuff like shadowing, volueenteering, working, etc.

This is just my $0.02...

Why do you think that is?

Just for the sheer time constraints. Orgo over the summer is a 15 week course condensed into 5 weeks, they're gonna gloss over topics but cover the main points. You also just won't have as much time to slowly learn and understand topics, you have to learn them right out of the gate.

It's funny you say that because I actually calculated the length of time I'd be in lecture over the course of the summer semester versus regular semester and, shockingly, the summer was longer by over 5 hours! (Regular semester = 50 min 3x per week x 15 weeks. Summer = 2 hr 15 min 4x per week x 5 weeks).

You also just won't have as much time to slowly learn and understand topics, you have to learn them right out of the gate.
Completely 10000% agree. This is the reason I'm even debating this so much in my head...

Here's what i'll add, when i finished chem 2, I found that the knowledge i learned at the end of the semester basically covered the first third of Ochem 1. Then in the winter i read a little bit of "Ochem as a second language second semester" and that covered literally everything i would learn in the class to a minor extent, which made Ochem 2 very easy. So idk, at least personally i think Ochem is the easiest science class and wouldn't be bad at all in the summer
