This is for those who say URMs have it "easier" and that we live in a post-racial society.

Wow. I didn't think I needed to spell this out so much but my point is the reason that many people of color are at a disadvantage when it comes to applying to medical school is because racist **** like this happens that not only takes a large psychological toll but also just makes day to day life for a URM that much more difficult. A common argument against URM admissions is that it should be done based on income instead of race, but the fact of the matter is that race is still a very relevant element of one's narrative.

Wow this video has me disappointed. This doesn't apply to URMs per say for medical school but it shows you how racist so many americans are. Think about people labeling you the second you walk out the door for every day of your life.

The sad thing though is that affirmative action punishes the least racist members of society, young people.

Lee should incorporate a sticky outlining rules that forbid one to make troll threads like this, lest they be sent to the banhammer and judged fiercely by the gavel of SDN. I'm really tired of this.

At least make solid, coherent arguments instead of posting a stupid, meaningless link.

These threads are the third rail of pre-allo. They're boring, they bring out *******s, and they wind up discouraging a lot of people who are gonna get the impression, rightly or wrongly, that if they're an under-represented minority all of their white classmates are just going to assume they were affirmative action picks regardless of their merits.

Also - Upworthy? Reallllly? Yes, I have watched some of their videos before, but I don't trust the site because of its strategy of trolling for likes on facebook by feeding into liberal prejudices about how the world works. I just assume that the content they publish is meant to manipulate me, given that I am, ya know, a flaming lefty.
 
I doubt anything will ever truly end the URM debate. Honestly we should just stop because nothing really ever comes of it.

My favorite day in Chemistry 102 was when the head of the chemistry department came in and told us there was an exciting research opportunity for the summer.

Then he told us it was for AA and hispanics only. 🙁

I'm the only AA at my summer research internship and this is a program funded by the NSF, which is very heavy in minority recruitment.

That should tell you something.

Don't worry. When it comes time to apply for a job, you will have a huge leg up over the minorities.

Studies show that minorities with equivalent qualifications receive interviews and job offers at a far smaller rate than their white peers.

People don't call it affirmative action for white people, but the advantages to being white in America far outstrip any advantage conferred to minorities through affirmative action.


Edit: I'm not defending affirmative action. I am extremely opposed to it. But if you are going to be butt hurt about opportunities for minorities, you need to be honest about the privileges being white offers in our society.

Tim Wise, who is an anti-racist author and spokesman, addresses white privilege very frequently in his speeches similar to what you have done.
 
This is an old video. Seriously though, you have to look racism right in the face and say eff you. I've never been in a situation (recently) where anyone has openly said something racist around me. I'm just waiting for that one moment. In fact, I've never heard anyone bring up this debate in real life, and I probably never will. Mostly because I defy every stereotype applied to my race.

Growing up as a black man in america, this video doesn't particularly surprise me. My father taught me at a young age that the rules were different for me because of my skin color; he taught me that people will see me and believe that i am innately up to wrongdoing.
That aside, i don't see how the OP believes this will end Urm debates or whatnot.

Really? That's funny, because at every job I've had (and I've had a few), the "white" population has always been the minority. If there's an advantage, all these other whites I should be finding must be too dumb to take advantage of the easy pickings.

Seriously, this should be ethically and morally simple. If my department head came in and declared the research opportunity whites only, there'd be an uproar. Why is it that how the eye perceives ****ing wavelengths of light makes such a big difference to our society? All I have to say is thanks to the generations of white slave-owning *******s who couldn't moralize their way out of a paper bag.

The jobs where whites are in the minority are not the types of jobs that matter. It is corporate executives, legal, financial, and professional jobs that I am talking about. And research unequivocally demonstrates that being a minority hurts your chances for getting a job.

You can be morally outraged or indignant. But you can not deny that the opportunities afforded from being white far outstrip those of being black or another minority.

Case in point. Whites have almost 20x the net worth of blacks and 18x the net worth of hispanics. And that is not a legacy of discrimination or your "ancestors" doing. This gap has emerged in the last 30 years.

Here's another hint: it's called history for a reason. In many cases, if you keep looking towards the past for evidence of what to do in the future, you'll never get anywhere. Sometimes it's time to wipe the slate clean, and at least attempt to start healing.

Fine, the jobs I've had don't matter, but the fact that 3 out 5 summer research opportunities I find that apply to my field, level of education, and geographic preference are specifically geared towards minorities is a major problem. I'm not socioeconomically better off than any other minority commonly cited for affirmative action; I need those research spots just as badly as they do. Nobody's throwing me any bones because I'm white, and I'm getting real sick of waiting for a generation that can truly understand a Voltaire or Locke.

When whites stop having 20x the net worth of blacks and 18x the net worth of Hispanics, then we can wipe the slate clean and start healing.

Until then, you need to acknowledge that your race offers you immense benefits and get off your high horse about denouncing the "unfairness" of affirmative action.

To the OP, URM's may have it worse, but affirmative action is a joke. Even Bill Cosby publicly speaks against it because someone with good credentials (URM) walks into a med school and everyone stares at them assuming they have a 3.3 and 25 MCAT because they're URM. Its ruining their lives even more in that respect than if they actually worked harder.

I wholeheartedly agree with this. I don't have the best stats, but I busted my ass to get a 35.

I didn't want to become a doctor through Affirmative Action, so I worked hard to objectively be qualified to become one. So even if everyone around me assumes I scored a 25, at least I would know.

And I will honestly state that it does wonders for one's own confidence in your abilities to know that the standards don't have to be lowered for you to accomplish your goals.
