anyone have any opinions? let's start that rumor mill!!! 😀

You must have just received your interview invite? Congrats...

I actually dropped Thomas Jefferson from my program list on the basis of a rumor that it is a somewhat 'malignant' program. Admittedly not the best basis for choosing (or not choosing) a program, but ya gotta go on something. 😕

Advantages: really nice location
Disadvanages: see above. Not your sick inner-city population, but nice rich people who live in Center City.

My PD says all Philly programs are pretty solid. However, one of our 'terns who did medicine at Jeff said the program might be malignant. I wouldn't overlook it just based on these rumors though - check it out.

As a recent patient of the Jefferson ER, I would say that NONE OF THE PATIENTS WHO GO TO THE ER THERE ARE RICH PEOPLE FROM CENTER CITY. The six hours I was there as a patient there was one 2 person MVA (one patient fairly stable, one bad), several drug/alcohol related cases, a stabbing, a big bar fight (3 people), a beating, a couple MIs/respiratory arrest, a number of poor people just looking for some help. I don't think I saw one person with an income over 50K, definitely not rich.

Point well taken. Let me clarify.

Jeff has a much higher percentage of high SES patients than many other urban EM programs. I was speaking comparatively.

Almost all urban EMs are populated by primarily by poor people, either because of poor access to primary care, lack of education, hunger and other factors. Rich people tend to take care of medical problems outside the ED, including their doctor's office, elective procedures and direct admissions.

Also, an EM doc's idea of poor may be different than the average person. When I say poor I usually mean welfare, homeless, SSI or somesuch. Anyone with ANY job who doesn't have a zillion kids doesn't qualify as poor in my definitions anymore.
