I go to classes where pop quizzes are given out and classes where straight memorization won't help. I skipped all of my courses in college that only required memorization and basic critical thinking skills. I scored 99th percentile on the digit span test, where he read increasing numbers of digits out to me and asked me to repeat them back to him from memory. The average adult can do this up to 7 digits. I was able to do this out to 22 digits before I made a mistake. If someone sat in front of you and told you the number 582759178490346317402, could you repeat it back to them? The psychologist told me after all the testing was completed that he had tested over 800 children in the 25 years that he had been with the district, and that I had the highest score of anyone that he'd ever tested on the digit span section.

Quit trying to brag to us that you're oh so smart because "you can memorize" nine hundred and some pages of a text book.

Also, yeah memorizing is important. Memorizing things such as the steps of the Krebs Cycle or maybe newtons laws for physics is great to have. BUT WTF IS THE POINT OF MEMORIZING EVERY PAGE OF A TEXT BOOK? Don't be so naive and tell me that it's important to know all that information.

You may be able to memorize better than I can, but that sure as hell doesn't make you a better student. True learning is being able to take concepts and synthesize them into other concepts. Not merely memorizing every word of every sentence in every page of a nine hundred page text book.

You and once would be perfect pals. you guys could even be friends!

Let both of the idiots spend hours trying to memorize. There are some people in here who don't memmorize anything and still get straight As. I wonder what these people are going to do when it comes time for medical school if undergrad seems this hard to them,

You know what I can't believe? I can't believe what poor grammar you have. The spelling is pretty terrible, too. I know you're not ESL because the ESL students I tutored in college have a better command of the English language than you do. That should embarrass you. My students were learning it as a second language and still managed to do better than you are.

Geez, no wonder premeds score so poorly on MCAT verbal reasoning. I guess they just can't comprehend simple message board posts.

Husker, I never said that I was smart because I possess great memorization skills. There are plenty of people on this board that are smarter than I am, but they don't have the memorization skills that I do. Intelligence will only get you so far when you need to memorize and synthesize vast amounts of information in a short period of time. And again, you are severely underestimating the increased utility that stronger memorization skills can provide.
 
Everyone needs to cool it with the personal insults, etc. If you have something against someone else, take it to PMs or something. Please don't simply post for the sake of insulting others. Now, let's try to bring this thread back on topic.

Uh, actually no. It's the opposite. You can get away with some memorization in med school like blindly memorizing the drug names and what conditions they're used for but since they ask you HOW a drug works and WHY you would use it in one situation vs another it doesn't help much.

And you're right, this is an internet forum. Which means we can say/feel whatever we like. And obviously, people are meaner because they hide behind their anonymous screen names.

Funny thing is, you should see what some of the attendings and residents say on other threads. They're all doctors, and some can be as bad as us. But it's the internet. Get over it.

I think that if I met the OP in real life, I would tell her that if you're isolating yourself like that, you're doing it wrong. Studying hard at the expense of social life can get you into med school, but at what cost? You'll be alone. You'll be a doctor with bad bedside manner. You might even get screened at all your interviews.

But as it is, we're on the Internet, so my official response will be: "Stop posting on SDN..."
